I tend not to use too many nicknames on Pokemon. I only do it on two noticeable occasions. One is when I'm going to trade it. I'll really only do obvious names that I wouldn't need to see the Pokemon in my party to know what it is. Char = Charizard The other occasion is when it's a shiny Pokemon. The two shinies I received from my friends were a red Dusclops named Rare Red and a green Pelipper named Green. So to keep up with the tradition they started, I named my Orange Zigzagoon Ziggy. Easy enough.

I hate that .

I only nickname the Pokémon I'm going to use in my team. I don't like constantly seeing the STANDARD UPPERCASE NAMES.
Right now, my Wartortle is named Anton, my Clefairy Mju and my Mankey Kyo.

I often call them an abreviation of their name (Chaddy - Charizard), sometimes it depends on what the pokemon's like (Vines - Venusaur, Sparks - Pikachu) and sometimes it's something that sounds cool (Jippy - Pidgeot). And on Ruby I called most of the pokemon I caught real names that sound a bit like the pokemon's names (Wilma - Wailmer, Penelope - Pelliper, Gordon - Groudon etc.)

I caught a Drowzee today, and because I wanted to use it I figured out a name for it.
Well, first off I wanted to name it Drow-Drow, but sounded kind of silly so I decided for Double D. :D

hmm. i think i'm probably one of the few here who not only nicknames most of their pokes, but actually uses a little more imagination than calling fire pokemon 'Flamey' or something. [althought 'Cushion' for snorlax is amusing enough] i use names taken from other media and then try to apply whatever name i think best fits the pokemon's image or "personality". hence my zapdos is called Quezacoatl after the aztec god of thunder, moltres is called phoenix after that other legendary bird, and my aerodactyl is named Bahamut after the dragon summon in Final fantasy games. in fact most of my nicks are FF-related. it's an additional extra passtime.

I nickname all my shinies and important, effort-trained Pokémon. Unlike a lot of people here, I do use uppercase names, unless I'm trying to compress a lot of words without spaces, in which case iWRITElikeTHIS. I figure that it's just standard Pokémon procedure to make reserved, key words uppercase, so I go along with that.

I give every single pokémon I catch a nickname. If a really cool name pops up in my head right away, I'll use it and more-than-likely add that new pokémon to my team just to give it a whirl. As for the other "random" ones I catch, I just look around and name it what I see (i.e.- bench, "Tee Vee" like a television, toaster... you get the idea). I've a few hundred caught and I don't think I've ever used the same name twice just because there are so many things one could name a freshly caught pokémon.

I only give nicknames to the Pokemon that I use frequently on my team and the shinys that I've managed to catch. (Which right now, is only one. :) )

Anyways, my Pokemon's nicknames in FR are:

Charizard-Burn
Clefable-Cosmei
Mr. Mime-Mimien (Obviously, it's the one I got from an in-game trade)
Hitmonlee-Kiken
Dragonair-Repdrah
Golduck-Platayo

I do use uppercases, since it's the game's default.

Usually a nickname is used on Pokémon I bothered to train for quite a bit (usually just Romanizations of the Japanese name, like I did for most of Colossseum, or German/French names in some cases), shinies (once I think up a good name for Porygon2-- not that it's hard, but there's so many possibilities!), and in some cases when I have a Pokémon with a stupid gender I give it a name to balance it out.

Obvious example: female Mr. Mime becomes Mrs. Mime; a female Omanyte becomes Omanette, etc. etc.

And when I ultimately trade over my FR/LGs to XD or something and restart, I'm thinking a lot of them will get nicknamed. Oh yes.

hm. well.. I named my very first charmander in the red version "KOOKIE" >_>

this isn't all of them but I nickname most of the pokemon I use on my team or battle frontier at some point..

Jumpluff - ALILSHY (random crap I made up)
Corsola - SEASHA (also random.. but supposed to be like "sea shell")
Clefairy - REENY (misspelled "Rini"--and it turned out to be a MALE clefairy when I traded it to silver!)
Ledian - KAGUYA
Typhlosion - NOVA
Articuno - SUB-ZERO
Zapdos - RAYDEN
Spinda - DIZZY
Flygon - AMELIA and ICARUS
Tyrannitar - DESPAIRS (was going to be DESPAIRSRAY but it wouldn't fit..)
Espeon - MALICEMIZER
Metagross - MECHAZAWA
Skarmory - XENA
Ninetales - FOXFIRE and BLAZEFIRE
I also have a random tropius that I named SHAQ because I was talking about that "MAN! I WISH I COULD BE WATCHING SHAQ RIGHT NOW!" commerical when it was caught >_>;

some of the most weird/iteresting ones are of pokemon I got in trades or from games I got used though (but I hate when they don't capitalize them!)
some of them are:
Yo (bagon)
MS.NIDO (nidoqueen)
ZEB (treecko)
LINE TRA. (no idea what that's supposed to mean, but it's an absol)
TOXIC 1.0 (koffing)
BOBBIN (bulbasaur)

and some names I want to use but haven't yet:
XBOX (for Metagross! It's big and clunky and it explodes!)
ZOMBOID (for Dusclops)

I used to not like giving Pokemon nicknames, but ever since the days of GSC I've been giving nicknames to all my Pokemon. In the old days I always picked funny ones, but nowadays I just look for ones that make sense...

A list of all the nicknames I use in Leaf Green:

Charizard: Kitonoko (fire lizard)
Butterfree: Peteswai (butterfly)
Beedrill: Koryau (has something to do with pain)
Pidgeot: Tesumuro (fast bird)
Fearow: Murandi (revenge bird)
Raichu: Kazuminari (This sounds like a good alternate Japanese name for Raichu--thunder mouse!)
Sandslash: Bopuka (strong hamster--?!?)
Nidoqueen: Korutamo (dangerous girl)
Clefable: Pirumi (just sounds neat)
Ninetales: Katesui (something to do with speed, which is odd given her Sassy nature)
Jigglypuff: Shitaki (song balloon--not a mushroom)
Golbat: Shikra (bat with good hearing... well duh--all bats have good hearing)
Parasect: Swishu (mushroom bug)
Venomoth: Morusatsu (eyes of royalty)
Dugtrio: Ferachi (little earth digger)
Persian: Naitanyara (meowing cat, hence the "nyar")
Primeape: Sumunaro (angry monkey)
Poliwhirl: Funan (something to do with stomach)
Alakazam: Psycon (yay, finally something not foreign-language based)
Machamp: Fuerto (similar to Spanish for strong)
Victreebel: Minegoru (eating plant)
Tentacruel: Lunara
Golem: Rokawa (big rock)
Slowbro: Gomai (something to do with dumb)
Magneton: Atenchi (little magnet)
Dodrio: Naroloido (angry triple-headed dodo--I guess I was aiming at only one of its heads)
Dewgong: Failene (something to do with mermaids)
Muk: Hedorio (comes from Japanese for sludge)
Gengar: Teledriva (something to do with hypnotism)
Onix: Nemaroka (rock snake)
Hypno: Sunedriva (hypnotic elf--wait, elf?!? Hypno's not an elf...)
Kingler: Snippety
Electrode: Kabuma (kaboom)
Exeggutor: Tamashi (combination of Exeggcute and Exeggutor's Japanese names)
Marowak: Hanmero (marrow--or bone--monster)
Hitmonchan: Mitogan (i dunno--guess it just sounded cool)
Weezing: Weedy (I have a habit of naming Koffing/Weezing after drugs--come to think of it I once named a Koffing "Marijuana", so what a repeat)
Rhyhorn: Tsunichi (one horn--or number one horn--whichever)
Chansey: Tetsi (something to do with luck, plus it sounds like chansey)
Tangela: Nettle (a forest elf in a story I wrote)
Kangaskhan: Tansokan (has to do with motherhood)
Seadra: Cleorse (named after somebody's goldfish named Cleo--hey wait, this should have been Goldeen's nickname!)
Starmie: Koirei (water star)
Seaking: Aqueen (I couldn't decide between "aqua" and "queen")
Pinsir: Pindoe (because it's female)
Tauros: Kentaur (from its Japanese name Kentaros)
Gyarados: Koyorio (uhhh. long version of koi)
Lapras: Plesio
Ditto: Wondergoo
Vaporeon: Aurine
Porygon: Novira
Kabutops: Otubak (Kabuto spelled backwards)
Aerodactyl: Dyna
Snorlax: Nemuragon (cross between its Japanese name and Japanese for sleep)
Dragonair: Drakai
Meowth: Pickup1, Pickup2, Pickup3, Pickup4, HM Pickup (I use these Meowth to collect items. HM Pickup also knows Cut and Flash--the most useless HM moves for battle.)

^^Yeah, I noticed a lot of them come from a language nobody's heard of... but I primarily use it in nicknames because the names sound cooler that way... (Yeah sorry those names are NOT japanese... except Rhyhorn's.) Anyways, everyone else doesn't have a nickname... or had a given nickname from the in-game trades.

I nickname all my pokemon. In all caps just because it's a habit. I usually name them after characters from things, or sometimes I give them random names that sound good/weird. I also name them after people I know in real life.

Pokemon on my party in LG right now...(names are in all caps but that looks weird out of game)

;090; - Susan (named after the character in Narnia...hey she has a gentle nature so it fits. XD)
;028; - Tomoyo (named after an anime character from Card Captor Sakura)
;099; - Rampage (named after a character from Beast Wars...XD)
;176; - Cuddles (this one was random)
;085; - Misato (named after a character from Neon Genesis Evangelion)
;121; - Clow (named after a character from Card Captor Sakura)

Those are just some examples. Other examples of my weird naming are that somewhere (I think on Ruby) I have a Wigglytuff named fluffyDOOM. XD But yeah I always nickname everything.

Anyone 4 Buttons?
24th May 2006, 7:16 PM
I sometimes name my Pokémon after my friends.
Examples:
;160; - Christian (after a girl I liked)
;373; - Lauren, after my friend who really likes the book of Eragon (Inheritance Trilogy)
;131; - Shelby, after the character in 'A Cinderella Story', played by Julie Gonzalo. mmm....
I also used to rename my Pokés backwards in R/B/Y because of the recolours in Stadium.
