I can confirm that May lost this contest, if you wish to fully discuss the ramifications and your feelings about this loss while being unrelated to the episode, please do it elsewhere

So I guess it's true that Harley has Octillery and...

HARLEY FINALLY WON! All I want to know is how May will act after she loses. I mean, if she's going to be such a you-know-what like when she lost to Savanna.

Can you confirm which attacks were used?

If not... get outta here.

Knew she'd lose. Well done Harley, he deserved a win. So the next Contest episode soon she'll probably get the ribon she lost here (not the exact same one)

Oh happy day. Harley got a win and Octillery got to make up for the sins of those who came before it. I wonder if Metronome went all wrong and Munchlax paid for it dearly.

Still, TBA is happy. Now all we need is the Steelers to win this weekend.

This is all I needed to know about the episode, the rest is irrelevant. Thank you Battle Frontier writers for getting this saga out of the slump it started in.

Irrelevant? How about how it fought? The attacks used? The outcome of how it kicked some ***?

Oh sure, I agree with that about the surrounding plot, but not the battle itself!

Why is everybody so excited about May losing? At the end of the days all this does is extend the time it's going to take for the group to make their way through Kanto as May will now have to enter an extra content in order to obtain five ribbons.

Jo-Jo
19th January 2006, 7:27 PM
We're pleased because it would be unrealistic for May to win every contest, we'd rather see extra contests in the BF than extra fillers, and this way Harley gets some credibility as a villain again.

Quite simply, because the majority wanted to see Harley take the win (Curse you Jo-Jo!). And to a lesser extent, to see Munchlax get its *** kicked to curb. But we shouldn't name names, ne? ;P
Besides, its hardly like the Frontier is moving at a snails pace at the moment.

I just want to know what Harley does after he defeats Haruka. Hopefully something along the lines of rubbing more than a tea-spoon of salt in the wound, old skool http://www.serebiiforums.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

Agreed, Contests are ever so grand. More contests means less filler too.

We went to 8 Gyms in Hoenn and 8 Contests in Hoenn. We're going to 7 Brains in Kanto, does that mean we'll have 7 contests? If so, May will have to lose another one down the road.

And since no one's mentioned it... Haruka gets a rose and a letter from Shuu somehow. Dunno how, as I couldn't translate well enough to say for sure. Looks like she won't be as depressed as I'd hoped... >.> Perhaps it's an invitation to the next contest?

I don't see May beating Drew until the Grand Festival. Just like Ash never beat Gary until the Johto league, they're clearly saving May's win against Drew until the climax of their rivalry.

That being said it's likely it'll be May Vs. Wakana in the finals of the next contest.

I've decided that his pokemon theme isn't "creepy," but rather, "kinky." Tentacles? Big sucking nose? Uh huh. Octan-chan fits right in.

And that Octan joke was in the original too. It's probably related to a Japanese proverb or something... And I have a feeling he caught Octan-chan just to tick her off. ^.^

that maybe true, but since you know Harley's never beaten May up till now, and the same for Drew always beating May, if Drew is in the upcoming contest episode, then either he's gonna haft lose to her or were gonna see a repeat of Fallarbor town, with some coordinator with a pokemon specificaly assigned the task of taking Drew out and losing to May, or Verdanturf and take him out before hand, cause it's not like Drew to just sit out of a contest for no reason, now if his pokemon were injured however.....

Doubtful. The PokeAni synopsis mentioned a girl called Wakana who will probably be May's final opponent. Although I imagine there will be some May/Drew interaction in the next contest anyway, even if they don't battle, because of him sending her the letter with the rose. Plus, after disappearing for this long, he'd BETTER have a good role. :p

I have a new theory, btw. Drew has magical powers. It's the only way to explain how he knew where May was, how he managed to time the letter's arrival to the greatest dramatic effect, AND how that durn rose travelled so long in Lilian's bag without getting smushed.

Powers, I say!

Bulbasaur lost to Savannah, skipped the next contest with Kelly, and beat Harley's Cacturne in the next one. So if Munchlax follows that pattern, it'll be in the contest after the Drew/Wakana one.

I think she might use Eevee to battle with in the next contest. It's due some spotlight. Normally I'd say it won't because she hasn't done any training with it yet, but Squirtle says hello.

I like the idea of Harley being that *****y, but I think if that were the case, he would have reminded May of his Octillery remark back in Izabe. As it is, she probably didn't even remember it, which makes the barb rather pointless. I reckon it was just a coincidence.

That does raise the question of who Drew loses to, if not May. Would he really go down to Wakana? She's described in the PokeAni summary as a rookie co-ordinator. Mind you, it would piss May right off if that happened.

Considering May, a rookie coordinator, managed to beat Grace - an experienced coordinator who had 3 ribbons at the time, I wouldn't put it passed the writers if they had Wakana beat Drew.

May and Wakana battling in the finals of the next contest is a given methinks. Yep. :/

Seen the pics. Looks really good. Harley doesn't play any tricks this time and does a pretty cool appeal with ariados. May's squirtle's appeal was kind of the same as last time's one. Munchlax goes against a politoed to get to Harley. The big match looks pretty cool especially when Munchy hits the bucket due to a hyperbeam or something.Harley should have had octillery pose on top of munchlax for good times sake. The funniest part looks like when Jessie's wobbufet for some reason crashes through the roof and almost ruins Harley's appeal. But the only bad part is Team Rocket's pointless involvement

I saw pics at flib.de. May barely made any reaction besides a mild sad face. The last move by octillery was (I think) Flamethrower and Munchlax used Metronome and got a electric attack (I guess it's Thunderbolt). Throught the episode Harley looked scary. And he didn't even try to trick May this time around.

I'm with you 75% of the way.

I like a glow or a charge or an aura if the attack needs something to differentiate it from the next. For an excellent case look at all the punches. Mega Punch, Dyamicpunch, and Focus Punch may as well be the same thing. The color change is the only diversity given. Some punches, like Dizzy and Comet, have to have enough more tweaks.

I also feel that if an attack is hard to visualize, a glow doesn't hurt. Now when I see Helping Hand and Aerial Ace strut their stuff, I can recognize the strut.

Although you are extremely biased I partly agree. The main reason that people are saying May is on a luck streak is because of that one match against Harley with her Squirtle and so everyone is basing it on that. It's like Grovyle's 'losing streak' based around its loss to Luvdisc, or the fact that Ash 'releases all of his Pokemon' because he did that a few times in the Kanto region, once in the Orange Islands, then after that (if you don't count giving Beedrill to Casey) never doing it again even though people still accuse him of it.

Although Harley's victory was a bit overdue, so good for him to finally beat May.

I hate contests with a pashion but can tell you type advantage doesn't mean squat. However, it was a great fight and May truly deserved it.

Vs. Kimimaro: Lucky contest # 1
Agreed.

Vs. Tsukiko: She lost with Bulbasaur
If only she learned something from it.

Vs. Kanata: Combusken is an awesome Pokémon
Kelly was too stupid to not clamp that overgrown dodo's mouth shut. Though that's more incompetance on the part of the opponent that luck.

Vs. Him: Even with that sissy cheat, Bulbasaur won fair
*Blows a whistle, throwing a yellow flag onto the field, and runs up in a football referee uniform* Ash interference. #1 on the offense. Five yard penalty. Remains third down.

Vs. Eriko & Toshiki: Lucky contest # 2
Skitty should have been puppy chow.

Grand Festival: She lost
After getting a cheap lucky win against Harley.

Vs. Him ... again: Some people will call it "cheap battle" I call it "taking advantage from a malfunction" because Ice Beam wasn´t a random attack like Assist
Ice Beam came out of nowhere, making Snorunt look like a grade A retard in comparison. Then it some how freezes all the webs despite not touching them. It was total luck and totally cheap. And Ice Beam does not have an advantage against Bug/Poison.

Vs. Obata: Combusken had the type advantage
Venusaur caved first.

And now Haruka gave a pity ribbon to ... him

May lost because she was stupid and thought she could win on luck. Harley learned this glaring weakness and used it to his advatage. That's why in the end, Harley is the better coordinator.

Pity win? She got crushed by a person who commanded his pokemon better than she did. She shouldn't have relied on charge moves and metronome. She battled stupid and her loss was understandable. I mean, remember when Octillery used rest? It seems like she wouldn't have even been attacking it if Ash didn't yell out

This episode was pretty good although TR was extremely pointless and rather annoying after their first scene.

At the beggining May and Harley trash talked also I think Harley though her Eevee was cute unless I misunderstood the pic. There was some funny TR/Harley interaction at the beggining. Squirtle did a cool looking appeal. Harley did as well but, when he was done wobbufet came crashing from the middle of nowhere. Then there was a juggling machamp. There was two pointless scenes of watching TR get blasted off by Pikachu. Which couldve been extra time spent in Munchlax battling Politoed or Octillery vs. his opponent. I thought Munchlax was excellent the commander was not so good during Harley's battle. Actually everytime they talked it seemed May was being too overconfident. Im glad the writers finally used the fact that solarbeam takes a tiny bit to charge to the opponent's advantage. Since Octillery got an attack through to stop Munchlax from executing the attack. They also brought up that she shouldnt of used metronome so much. Although a cool looking will o wisp was used by munchlax via metronome. In the end Harley didnt rub it in but, he did the oh so cliche behind the wall thing. I actually felt sorry for Munchlax being upset because it lost. Then May recieved a letter about another contest and with the letter/map came a rose so we know it was Drew who sent the letter. Anyway there was quite a few worthy avatars of Harley and possibly one for Munchlax.

Wow. This episode... had a LOT of older humor. Violence, paper fans, random stuff... Crap, this episode felt like an oldie! For sure they need to keep up this kind of high production value.

I'm getting sick of seeing some certain Pokemon... Rhyhorn and Rhydon; Furret; Machamp; any small, cutesy Pokemon; SUNFLORA.

Politoed vs. Munchlax: As quick as it was, that battle was a thrill. OHKO from Solarbeam on a Water Pokemon finally makes it more genuine.

Octillery vs Munchlax: Simple in terms of attacks and strategies. Nothing outrageous or convenient (like a certain Ice Beam). Constrict actually constricted Munchlax. Focus Punch was forced to lose its focus. Solarbeam had power up time!

Metronome scoring Thunder I'll let slide. It did allow for that spectacular Rest scenario. Capitalizing on the Pokemon's vulnerability... that was exploited in the Battle Arena episode, wasn't it? Mighty entertaining.

Just what was that physical attack Munchlax was using on Octillery? It appeared to be either Headbutt or Tackle.

Jikkle

Think he was using headbutt since tackle uses more of the shoulder and he was using his head the couple times he used his physical attacks.

No, that's when Munchlax was knocking it around while it was using Rest to shake off the paralysis from the earlier Metronomed Thunder.

Munchlax had become a pretty good battler, even before this epsidoe. I think I've mentioned before how much I appreciated how the writers executed Munchlax's growth and in-battle technique. This wasn't the best example of Munchlax's battling ability, and I think that is more of May's choice of attacks. I'd like her to have a little out of battle training and have Munchlax do a spectacular job during the next contest. Good thing its only 2 episodes away.

I have seen this Contest episode. Too bad May's Munchlax lost against Harley's new Pokemon, Octillery. That is why Harley won this contest with his Ariados & Octillery. But never mind, maybe Munchlax had done its best. Munchlax is a good battler. This is the first time I saw Munchlax in a contest battle.

I dont think ive seen the eye spots on an Ariados move before but it hs been seen on Spinarak a few times so it makes sense for its evolution to have the same effect.

Whoo for Harley! Its about time he won. When i saw him holding the ribbon in the pics i started clapping and said Yay he finally won! I laughed at the beginning when he came in running like a girl would. Heh i just love Harley, hes such an awesome character. Squirtle's appeal was really cool, even though i dont like Squirtle much. I wish TR didnt barge in on Harley's appeal. Why must they ruin the good stuff? Do the writers think its funny to have TR constantly appear and ruin things? I find it more annoying than funny. The battle between Octillery and Munchlax looked awesome. I'm glad Octillery got some redemption and kick some rear end but i did feel bad Munchlax lost in his first contest battle. Ive really grown attached to the little dude. He's so cute. I think hes made it on to my list of favorite pokemon. The end of the ep was good. May got a rose from Drew, aww. Bet the May/Drew shippers liked that one. I think this was a good episode. Someone mentioned they wanted to downlod it. Where's a place you can do that?

That was a pretty enjoyable episode. When Wobbuffet fell through the roof I instantly thought "REVENGE!" It would have been interesting if it had held a grudge against Ariados for what happened back in Saffron.

Somebody actually used a Magneton for a contest appeal. The anime has made it a good battling pokemon, but it really just seems too inflexible to be any good for showcasing.

Munchlax was adorable with all of his flexing. Squirtle also pulled off a very nice appeal, which even got Lillian spinning.

I know they all said it must have been Drew who sent the letter, but couldn't it also have been from that Wakana person who will appear in the next contest? She (?) could have sent it as a trap so she could defeat May and impress her idol. Besides, if Harley already has four ribbons Drew might have five. He was always two steps ahead of the competition.

I think Jessie "asked" James to use Manene in the next contest episode, can somebody confirm this?
I hope it uses mirror move, barrier, mimic an dother funny stuff ^^ but that´s offtopic...

It was funny how Harley was creeped out because of team rockets motto and he recognized them after all. I think he wanted to ask them for help or something like that to fool May but remembered then that they are loosers after all ^^; But again..just speculation.

Brock is the ladies man with his little bonsai! yay! he deserves it.

Harley was good as usual and he uses one of my favourite water pokemon as well, no complaining for me.

And as long as Squirtle does the appealing part and no Uber battling, I have no problem with it. I don´t understand why everybody still hates it.
Same with Munchlax who battled well in this episode, without any unfunniness if you ask me.

But Harley was just better. I think May could do nothing to prevent her loss.
Munchlax arms are just to short to knock octillery off its head ^^

I liked the whole atmosphere of this episode. Contests ARE the best part of pokemon for sure ^_^

This episode was 'fun' in the purest sense of the word.

I loved the way the episode starts of, as its much more humourous than usual. At the begining, Brock's Bonsly was attracting hordes of girls who where squeling and commenting on how cute it is.
So now it seems that Brock can use the thing as bait. Child Labour Laws: Do they exist in the pokémon world?!
It was also amusing how Brock thought Harley was another girl when he heard his voice. Priceless.

Speaking of Harley, my god. He crashed right through the top of the campness scale and kept on going this time around. The hip-wiggling, the blowing of kisses, the limp wrists, the pink handkercheifs, the overuse of 'very' ...you name it, he's got it. All of it was fantastic and he was on top form this time around. Brilliant.

Squirtle needs to stop doing appeals now. I can't say I'm impressed by its Ice Beam and Bubble performance any more. Especially when it has such an amazing appeal like Harley's to compete with.
...and when the HELL is Combusken going to get a chance at another appeal?

Kudos to Wobbuffet, for proving he's still a pro when it comes to random, off-the-wall amusement. That entire scene, despite how short it was, was executed suberbly and was truely hillarious.
Also, he's cute when he's angry. Just lookit dat face (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/Gravyyy/angreh.jpg). Daaaw!

Hahahaha! Oh man, that final battle was fecking sweet. Watching Munchlax get totally pwned by Harley's Octan-chan was definatly the best part of the whole freakin' episode and then some. There is nothing better than watching a character you dislike, struggling in futillity whilst being crushed and pelted with high power attacks coming from such an awesome underused pokémon. Especially when, for the majority of the episode, its constant flexing and cocky attitude were just as bad as its insatiable appetite.
'Harley very thank you!' indeed! :D

Edit- Just something I didn't notice the first time around. A big ROFL to Lillian, who during the intro to the contest, shouted out "Very Sexy!"

did anyone catch the Engrish that Harley used when he first release Octan? I'm wondering what Octan-chan's nickname is.... Noctus and Jupetta are his "cool buds", Ariados is "King of Cool", so Octan is....?

God damn that Zenigame.... not only does it appear again, but it scores top appeal. Even with the scoring system taken away since Kantou began to prevent me from seeing how well each appeal did, they still manage to severely piss me off. That thing beat Ariados again. Yamato angurii! Apparently, popping bubbles is more impressive than bungee jumping and spinning yourself like a mummy with your own silk -_-. But it seems like but a minor gripe in comparison to the rest of this majorly kickass episode.

The beginning was funny as hell. First there was Takeshi almost mistaking Harley for a girl in the crowd (after the orienteering episode, and now this scene, Usohachi is quickly gaining my respect), and Harley scaring off all the girls as he came strutting up. I loved that fake voice that Kojirou was putting on as he was disguised as a Polock salesman, and after Rocket Dan did their motto, this little bit was the icing on the cake.

Harley: "Oh, you're the Rocket Dan that always loses to Haruka-chan, aren't you?"

Sounansu: "Sounansu!"

XD I was bursting out laughing with that one. The insanity with Rocket Dan only continued, as Sounansu randomly fell in and Ariados scared the living s*** out of it. Then when Satoshi caught Rocket Dan stealing Pokemon on the roof, they tried putting up some ruse that they're supporting Haruka, since they have a grudge against Harley for his earlier insult. Then Satoshi asked what the Pokemon in the cage were for, and not finding an answer, Pikachu immediately Thunderbolted them away. And while I'm still talking about the comedy aspect of this episode, I also got a chuckle when I saw Sukizo and Contesta scared half to death by Ariados's afforementioned appeal, while Joy didn't let it get to her a bit.

It's nice to see that they're properly preparing Eievui for its eventual use in contests, making Takeshi hold it in order for it to see what a contest is. I guess I won't be seeing any of that rush-right-into-being-cheap-after-several-episodes-of-goofing-off-and-barely-training bullcrap that a certain turtle did (and I just got through translating the orienteering episode, where Haruka states that Eievui needs to work on some techniques before she'll let it participate in contests. Really good to know ^^).

And to top it all off.... Harley got a win. Boo-f***ing-yeah! He appeared at the start of the episode to show that he already had three ribbons (four counting this one), as well. That's the kind of stuff you'd see Shuu pulling off before royally handing Haruka her ***. The writers finally got it through their heads that they need to portray this guy as more of a threat, especially given his popularity. It's about damn time, I say ^^. It's just too bad that the Battle Frontier is in a rush, now. A first part episode that's setting things up, like how things were for that attrocity in Yamabuki, sure would've been nice (ah well.... at least I'm ever so closer to a certain upcoming evolution). But I'm with The Big Al, this episode is definitely one of my instant favorites.

There is nothing better than watching a character you dislike, struggling in futillity whilst being crushed and pelted with high power attacks coming from such an awesome underused pokémon. Especially when, for the majority of the episode, its constant flexing and cocky attitude were just as bad as its insatiable appetite.

Yeah... to be honest, I'm like the majority that's gained some respect for Gonbe after all the development it was getting (hell, unlike Zenigame, it actually would've made sense if it were to win this battle. Not that I'd want Harley to lose again, of course). But, all that flexing really did get on my nerves after a while. Thank god Octan came to lay the smack-down on that cocky little b*stard.

And as long as Squirtle does the appealing part and no Uber battling, I have no problem with it. I don´t understand why everybody still hates it.

Because it's a stupidly pointless and late Fire/Leaf advertisement (at least Gonbe's an advertisement that makes sense), was nothing but a crybaby for 15 episodes before majorly p*ssing us all off in Yamabuki, stole Heigani's thunder in what was rightfully his showcasing episode, and still has yet to do anything or have something happen to it that will redeem itself of those things. Its voice is damned annoying, too, and tries looking cuter than your average Zenigame but horribly and sickeningly fails.

She says that now, but I'd be surprised if she didn't use it in next fortnight's contest. Apart from Eevee, they really haven't got anything new to work with. Though I hear Wakana (who is a decent enough bet for Haruka's main opponent this time around) is a rookie coordinator, so I suppose if Eevee DID battle and defeat her it wouldn't be too bad, ne?

Bah. I'm far too stubborn to start respecting Munchlax at this point I'm afraid :p
But here's to hoping that Squirtle is the next to be battered. It wouldn't be fair if a pokémon I don't like gets its face pounded into the dirt, whilst your disliked creature gets away scott free :P

GOOD GOD!

Just when I thought it wasn't possible to make Harley any campier, they outdo themselves. This episode was pure genius! Harley really outdid himself (and not just because he won, everything else he did in the episode was hilarious!)

The writers must have been planning ahead for this episode for a long time, because it was just about perfect in every sense of the word. If every episode of the series was like this, we'd have a truly fantastic show on our hands.

Is it just me or is Lilian starting to look ****ty? Guess the outfit must be getting to me. (Not that I wouldn't mind May wearing something like that someday)

LMAO at Team Rocket. Jessie "powering up" and Wobbufetts antics were great. And I agree that it's great that Eevee gets to WATCH a contest before participating, hopefully Eevee doesn't turn out to be Skitty's replacement.

Loved Brock falling for Harley at the beginning too. Is Brock becoming a chick magnet lately? :o

May was fun to watch as usual, I'm surprised she took her loss so well. What else can I say? This is Pokemon at its best, and its a shame that the writing can't be as consistently brilliant as this episode.

Ok after watching this episode it turned out to be better than I thought really.

*Brock falling for Harley was LOL, maybe he's giving up on girls ;D.

*Octillery was a twist, out of all the Pokemon I thought Harley would have I wouldn't of thought Octillery to be one of them. But at least it got an appearence, we haven't seen one since Hoenn when it clinged to Max's face :P

*Wow Drew letter, i'm so glad he's returning in the next contest. He's like losing the spot light to Harley, he needs a contest episode already! Plus I wouldn't mind seeing him lose to May, even though I am a Drew Fan.

*Now all I need to see is a Jessie victory and i'm golden. I mean if Harley finally one, my hopes for Jessie are reviving. I mean James did win the that thing, so maybe Jessie will strike lucky and win the next contest. *croses fingers* We can all dream.

*Since May used Squirtle for her Appeal and Munchlax for her battling, I can imagine her using Eevee for her next battle and Munchlax for her appeal.

A few things I wanted to clarify:

About whether attacks should glow or not, I think that whenever a special energy is being used they should glow, or whenever it helps define the attack better. I mean what then is there to distinguish something like Rest from normal sleep? After all, normal sleeping doesn't cure a Pokemon of ailments and restores its energy to the max in less than a minute.

As for Crabhammer, it is a Water type attack so having it glow makes more sense to give it the elemental aspect to it.

May was very overconfident and it led to her getting pwned by Harley.
Overconfidence didn't seem to have anything to do with it, besides Harley winning only because of that wouldn't have redeemed him as a skilled opponent now would it? It also shows how much May has matured in that she took a loss to a jerk (he may be skilled, funny and a great character but he's still a jerk) like Harley so well.

Both May and Harley faught extremely well, and their "life bars" were quite even for most of the battle. This was the best kind of pokemon battle, both sides giving their all and using various strategies while the other tries to counter them with their own, until the more skilled trainer wins (even though luck plays a part as well).

I wish TR didnt barge in on Harley's appeal. Why must they ruin the good stuff? Do the writers think its funny to have TR constantly appear and ruin things?
But they didn't barge in on the appeal. Wobbuffet came crashing in for a hilarious scene. If it hadn't we wouldn't have gotten to see how Ariados can change the facial markings on its back like Spinarak can.

My single disappointment, although actually its nice in terms of continuity is that Harley's Ariados seems to still be a weak fighter who is only good at spraying webs. But that is the main reason it lost to May's Squirtle, Harley should have given it more offensive attacks like Night Shade, Fury Swipes and such.

Still seems pointless to me. The trainer tells a pokémon to use rest, it goes to sleep, it's now using rest. Not hard to figure out.

Right. With an attack like Rest, if I Pokemon is doing that in battle, you know it has to be on purpose.

Contrast that with, say, Block, Endure, or Role Play and the difference is clear in regards to what requires a glow and what doesn't.

I do agree with Pokemon Fan on the idea of Special-type contact moves though. Or with Crabhammer at least.

Pokemon Fan, their life bars may have been equal at the end, but that's only because May lucked out with Thunder forcing Harley to command Rest. Up until that point, before she got one of the most AMAZING peices of luck ever, Octan-chan was owning May and her annoying little Munchlax.

Some points to make:

-This episode was a huge STFU to all those that said that Harley was a one-trick pony, and stale. He got right to the *****yness, not only with May but with Team Rocket too, and delivered some of the greatest lines and facial expressions ever. (Like when Metronome produces Thunder and when he commands Ariados to wrap itself in it's own webbing.)

-Harley's Engrish. "Harley very question" is the best line in Pokemon ever. Period.

-Octan-chan mimicing Munchlax's Metronome. Hell, Octan-chan's cockyness was pretty awesome all round.

-May getting her *** handed to her = win

-One of the best, if not, THE best BF so far. It's got to be up there in my top 5 favorite episodes of Pokemon.

-Munchlax flexing it's muscles. Seriously, that thing needs to die.

-So does Squirtle. I love how they've made it an Uber in appeals too.

-Politoed = win

FINALLY saw the episode. Like most people have said, this episode was indeed awesome. FAR better than the Saffron and Silver Town Contests, and just about on par with the Lilycove arc.

*jump* D-do you hear that? That's me jumping on the Harley bandwagon. I've always thought he was cool, but the way he acted and the fact that he won in this episode REALLY got me to like him.
Speaking of his movements, someone better get Harley's lower half insured...because the skipping, the hip waggling, EVERYTHING was adorable [and his 3rd person Engrish only contributed to this] Sooo...shall we start at, what, a cool 10 mill? C'mon people, 10 million dollars for the greatness that is Harley's legs. Neh?

I severely underestimated Octillery as Harley's Pokemon as well. It actually does fit him, and the animators did put a sort of glare on his face. On the note of Pokemon, Politoed!!! Aww...I love Politoed. Too bad it was beaten so easily.
Squirtle is as cheap as ever with that damn pretentious bubble attack, and Gonbe was actually getting on my nerves with the constant flexing and such [and I seriously don't mind Gonbe].

Overall, excellent. See you in the Grand Festival, Harley.

Harley's movements, expressions, Engrish ("Haarii very question" was the BEST)... Perfect. Octan-chan... Perfect. Ariados-chan... *squee* I loooove you Ari-chan~ I'm soooo glad Harley's win came with such a wonderfully drawn episode too. <3 Definately takes the spot as my fave episode.

Even Zenigame couldn't ruin my love of this episode, though I certainly could have done without it... >.> And I hope Harley uses Jupetta-chan next time...

Seen the ep! Spent most of it thinking "How in the world did they manage to make Harley even gayer??", and then "SQUEEContestshippingSQUEE" for the last three minutes. In an attempt to review semi-seriously, all I can say is that everyone was so darn CUTE in this episode. Harley with his pink handkerchief, Pikachu in its widdle cheerleading costume, May giggling at Harley, Team Rocket being all -__- when Harley was laughing at them, Drew sending May a rose in a letter (daww, he misses her!) - even Squirtle was kind of adorable. I liked its appeal. (More than Harley's... sorry. *hides*) And I guessed lots of stuff right, which makes me very happy. Harley totemo happy, even.

Well, I just now got around to watching this ep, and it was indeed as good as everyone made it out to be.

First of all, Kojirou-tachi's interaction with Harley was hilarious. I guess I never realized that they hadn't had any contact with him until now. It was funny that he recognized them as being the ones that were always beaten by Haruka and her friends. XD Not to mention his Engrish had me in stitches. And Soonansu randomly crashing though the ceiling in the middle of his appeal was priceless.

The battle itself was pretty damn awesome. It's about time we get to see Octan take part in a real battle (or be seen at all for that matter), and it kicked a*s, which is what I would have expected from such an awesome dude. Too bad it didn't use any of those crazy moves it can learn. And needless to say, Harley winning was beyond awesome.

They really could use more episodes animated like this. Everything looked great. And again with the old school music. "Shouri no Badge, Getto da ze!" <3

hey everyone. Sorry if this is a bit of a shameless plug, but I just wanted to let everyone know that a parody sub I made for this episode, which you can discuss about here (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?p=2998050#post2998050), was recently released. Expect a true sub of this episode to be released soon.

This episode was good. It was funny to see Bonsly attract the girls for Brock. Harley's new voice is terrible and also, IMO, makes him sound weirder. Him laughing at TR was hilarious. Squirtle's performance was awesome. Munchlax was awesome. It was good to see Octazooka, but poor Munchlax getting owned. It was funny when Thunder hit Octillery.

And that's a GOOD thing? :@

Seems like Harley suffered the same fate as Ash with his voice. Dogasu's going to have a field day with this. Anyways, the episode was all right. I'm glad they didn't make Munchlax's defeat be one-sided, and they didn't make Harley gloat over May at the end. That was my biggest fear.

Did Harley say "May! My little ginger bread cookie!"? xD I was like "WTF?" The way he said it too. Ehheh, his voice is a little .....different. It's not totally OMG SUCKY! But...I really wish he still had his old voice.

This episode was great. I was glad Harley was able to win against May finally. Their battle was pretty one-sided, with Harley tearing May apart in it. But very great episode.

Something about Harley seems...off. The old dub writers gave Harley a not-so-manly voice and attitude, but at least he was definitely straight.

But the new Harley...has some weird lines...

-Most of the good lines in this episode can be taken WAY out of context.:D Then again, Harley's in this--we shouldn't expect any less.XD

-I like Harley's new voice, but it lacks the dark side of him...

-Wow, a mention of when May got overconfident going for her third ribbon in Hoenn the first time!:D

-Octillery kept its Japanese voice, even though it clearly says 'Octan' a few times.^^

I liked Harley's new voice. He may not be as menacing but he pulls off Harley's over-the-top goofyness just as well as his former dub voice. Plenty of energy and wackiness, just what Harley needs. ^_^

Although its odd that he so adamently refuses to work with TR in this episode but has them help him try to cheat in a future episode. But then again this is Harley, his mind can change in an instant if he so chooses.

I also thought May's voice actress was quite nice in this episode, especially when she teased Harley by quoting his "powder my nose line," she sounded so wonderfully sassy there. :D

Then there is the wonderful inflections in brock's voice when he's surrounded by the girls adorign Bonsly. "Babe magnet!"

Ash's voice sadly, remains a bit flat...:(

What's wrong with you people? Harley's voice was excellent.

Harley's VA was wonderful, thanks, PUSA!

He's just as deliciously gay as before. :D The lines in this episode were hilarious.

Harley calls Brock, "Big boy."

Harley says Ash/Max/Brock are May's, "boy-toys." :D

This exchange was hilarious:

Harley: I'm going to crush you, you squirt!
May: Hee hee!
Harley: It wasn't THAT funny.
May: I know, but I'm going to be the one to crush you! Now excuse me as I go powder my nose!
Harley: Aaaargh! Nobody steals my lines and gets away with it!

After the Contest is over and May receives the letter from Wakana, as Harley is leaning against the three he says, "Hmph. Nice girls finish last."

:D

Aha, PUSA you're awesome. Harley called Ariados, "Darling" and "Hon (short for honey) a number of times, and even May calls Harley, "Hon," when she's in battle with him.

Haha, PUSA got Harley nailed and gave him wonderful lines to boot, and his interaction with May was great.

James actually called May, "Your girl," when talking to Ash. :o

I believe what's been happening is 4 Kids hasn't been around to edit out lines like these that might've originally been in there. Don't forget the current writer started adapting scripts for 4 Kids back in 2002 with Season 5.
It's looking like everyone's getting comfortable in their roles, and that includes PUSA as well. It's nice to see egos being used to better the Pokemon product, rather than bettering one's own personal gain.

Harley did have some extremely funny gay lines in this episode. But that just makes it even more awesome. xD Harley calling his pokemon "Hon and Darling" ...goes so great with his character. I love it. I can't wait to see how they handle him in the next episode he's in. (So we heard Harley's new VA, finally. Now we need to wait for the slow week to end till we hear Drew's new VA. His voice was fine for the most part. Sounded a bit too much like Tracey in parts, but his tantrums were delightful.

Loved this quote also:

Kathy Borland is one of the funniest, most creative script writers I've had the pleasure to work with -- her changes to the scripts ALWAYS greatly improved the script. Harley's new voice...HARLEY'S NEW VOICE!

Okay, don't get too scared here. Harley's new voice didn't scare me and it didn't piss me off. It may not be as great as his last voice for English, but there were enough gayish lines coming from his mouth that made me forget that his voice changed (for about 5 seconds at least).

This episode was too funny! With this, I was afraid Harley was going to break out in song and start singing some showtunes somewhere in the middle of this episode.

Plus, the fact that I am really hating Contesta and Sukizo's new voices (bangs head against wall repeatedly) I hardly noticed Harley as much of a pain on this.

Well until next week *sobs and worries about Drew*

I sware, when Harley first appeared, i screamed in fear! He scares meO_o! God the way he acted made me wonder exactly what 4Kids would have had they still had the rights. Maybe it's for the better that PUSA has it now, otherwise Harley may have been edited... oh wait a sec... Harley still had some of that um... "personnality" back when 4Kids was in charge, but nothing like this. It was great having Squirtle do it's little intro appeal. It's a born compettitor! Munchlax on the other hand, great attacks, but not so good on the competitive side. Eh, ya cant win em' all.

Now that i think about it more, Harley creeps me out more than he scares me.

Best scene: During Harley's appeal, Wobbuffet comes out from the ceiling, lands into the stage, then dashes off out the door!

And Pikachu with his cool new outfit... say where did he get it?

THE FUNNIEST EPISODE EVER!!! Harley's lines were hilarious and I laughed out loud when he was approaching Brock at the beginning and all of the girls ran away! ^_^! I mean, he sounded completely gay in this episode!

But next week, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The dub, whether 4kids or PUSA, has already screwed up two of my fav characters' voices *COUGHMAXIECOUGHASH* and I DO NOT WANT DREW's VOICE to be horrible!!

This episode was remakable! Squirtle's appeal round was really remarkable as well! This was one of my favorite Pokemon Contest episodes because of Harley and May's performance. I like the way Lillian said "Let's Get Busy!" about three times. In Weekend Warrior, she only said it once and replaced it with other statements. Too bad that we will only get to see a few more performances of May until she leaves to Johto.

Harley used to annoy me, but I think he's one of my favourite characters after this episode!

I don't think they would've let him stay stuff like "hun" and "off to powder my nose" because that makes him sound gayer (is that a word? I don't think it is...) OK more feminine than ever. And of course, that is "bad".

I thought this was a funny episode. It was almost as if PUSA sat down and planned, "Okay, how can we make Harley even more out-there than what 4Kids did?" Each of Harley's lines was a gem, especially the "May's boy toys" remark. I thought it was ironic Harley was laughing at the idea of working with Team Rocket, considering what happens later on. My favorite scene would have to be at the end when May got the letter and rose.

Well, at least Harley didn't pull any cruel tricks on May this time, and he got in a line that made me crack up (boy toys!). I still don't like the guy, but at least he had one episode where he didn't make me want to slap him around a while. Too bad May didn't win this time, but at least it was an okay episode otherwise. The best part had to be Wobbuffet falling through the roof in the middle of Harley's first round. ROFLOL :D I honestly thought Team Rocket did that on purpose, but it turned out he just fell through from the balloon. LOL It was interesting to see that Team Rocket wanted May to beat him after he sassed them earlier too.

Man, a very well-dubbed episode by PUSA.

I couldn't believe how much more flamboyant they made Harley (who is actually one of my favorite characters in the anime) as opposed to the 4kids version.

All my favorite parts in the episode involve him, actually, except for one:

-Harley getting mad when May mocks his "powder my nose" line.
-Harley calling Ash and Brock May's "boy toys." That was priceless.
-Harley shouting "HEART ATTAAAACK!" when Octillery was struck by lightning.
-During Team Rocket's quintessential "blast off," Jessie asks James, "Who's prettier, Harley or me?" and James responds, "Do I have to?!"

Overall, a pretty well-dubbed episode. Ash is starting to sound better though he still seems to lack a bit of emotion.

actually, Harley's lines in the original version don't seem very gay (he does abuse Engrish, though XD). Rather, he seems campy due to his delivery of the lines, his body language, as well as the fact that he speaks with very feminate mannerisms and the "atashi" pronoun.

Harley has gotta be the worst character ever. At least his voice isn't as annoying as it was before. Decent episode though.

It was nice to see Harley win for change. And I laughed at this part: http://www.serebii.net/anime/NextOn/437.jpg

Octillery was amazing. I mean, using a Fire type attack in battle? Genius. Harley taught it well.

I'm glad lost. She was on a winning streak so I wanted to see her get knocked down a peg.

Contests are such a great was to show the full extent of a rivalry. 9/10

Maylax and Harleyados!
Best part ever!

After reading all these posts, am I the only one that actually found Munchlax flexing all the time kind of cute after a while?

And, wow! could they make Harley any more gayer? Not that it's a bad thing!

This episode was good. Harley wasn't up to no good this time around. It was cool to see an Octillery for the 1st time in awhile. It was interesting to see Harley finally win a contest. The Munchlax vs Octillery battle was very cool. Harley definitely exploited May's flaws in her strategy for the battle. It was tough to see Munchlax lose the first contest battle it was in. Squirtle's performance in the Appeal Round was really cool.

Hey, Harley actually got a win. I suppose that they had to extend May's contest run some how I suppose.

I quite enjoyed this episode. I find it quite nostalgic because this is actually the first episode i saw in japanese way before the dub was even done of this series. I believe season 8 dub was still airing at the time from memory.

However I don't have access to the japanese version anymore when it comes to this season.

The english I realise loses a bit of impact due to some of the dub music but you know what? That doesn't bother me anymore. So I actually enjoyed the dub quite alot.

I loved the facial expressions and the way harley and May interacted with one another. It was funny.

I also enjoyed the battle and performance round. Squirtle and Munchlax were brilliant.

I really like this episode.^-^

It really gave me good memories. I remember I use to have a still image of pikachu doing that little dance in my sig. I love those scenes in both dub and japanese.=3

I remember that scene so well since it was a first in a long time where i thought pikachu was cute. The last time back then was as far back as Johto.

Here's the thing: 4Kids started over gay-ifying James in AG (Eric Stuart, I love your voices man, but even I gotta admit you were losing it as James a bit-- still I would take Eric's AG James over Ted and Jimmy any day but besides the point), but apparently TPCi started over gay-ifying Harley.

That being said Bill Timoney is easily one of the better TPCi VAs to me. He did a fairly passable impression of Andrew Rannells.

"May and her brood of boy toys."

Woah...back up...TPCi wrote something...CREATIVE? THAT ISN'T AN ALLITERATION OR A ZOPPI-LOGUE. PINCH ME: I MUST BE DREAMING!

JK. But really, the dub is lacking SO much creativity these days. We need lines like this to spruce things up, please. :D

Michele's May was her usual sexy high-pitched self (when she yells, she sounds kinda hot in a wrong way to me = xD), Sarah's Ash was his usual gloomy, brooding, and deep self, etc.

All in all, a good one for Season 9 more due to the writing than the voices.

Ash and Max, R.I.P. your voices. *Salutes*

Dub: 76/100

Eh, I disagree. Andy wasn't an angelic voice, but he was a lot less annoying than Bill's far more catty and more gay-like Harley voice.

This episode was funny in my opinion. Harley and May's facial expressions were funny, Nice to see Harley beating May for the first time in a Pokémon contest. Also, it was hilarious when May said " Gotta go powder my nose ".

Shame that May lost, but having main characters lose from time to time like this keeps them realistic and less one dimensional in their chosen fields.

I was mostly relieved that May used Munchlax for the Contest battle here instead of the ever-so-predictable Squirtle or Combusken. I also cheered when Harley showed up and sashayed towards May. Harley's appeal with Ariados was creepy but also cool, and seeing Ash stop Team Rocket's scheme was a waste; why did TR have to plan a scheme anyway?
