[Before I begin, I know there was a thread a while ago regarding this, but I think there is more to be discussed (such as where to get the item and such).]
Teru-Sama is an item in Pokémon Gold and Silver (I’m not sure if it is in Crystal). It can only be accessed through a glitch or while using a GameShark. It can be sold at a pokemart for 19660 pokedollars. It sits in the regular items area of your pack. It can be registered for use with the select button, but I have not found it to do anything. It can be attached to a pokémon and it can be thrown out. There is no in-game description of it. Here are some pictures:
Teru-Sama at a pokemart (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f27/gulzarofgrass/Teruatmart.png)
Teru-Sama in your backpack (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f27/gulzarofgrass/Teruinpack.png)
So my question is: What does anyone know about it?
As far as I can tell, it was meant to be a filler between items. Each item in the game has a number in hexadecimal assigned to it, so when there are gaps, Teru-Sama takes the place.
What does the name mean? Teru-Sama could refer to a name, as Sama is, to quote wiktionary, “An honorific ending for names that indicates extreme reverence” in Japanese. I didn’t see anyone by the name of Teru in the credits (correct me if I’m wrong), so I assume it is a nickname for someone at Gamefreak.
Other than a name, Teru in Japanese means “light or bright.” I’m not sure if this has any significance.
Some people say it turns into a key item in Crystal. Some people say it can be acquired using a Pokémon Stadium glitch. Some think it improves a pokémon’s stats.
My reason for starting this thread is to see what people know about it so that we can have a better understanding of the items that are programmed into the second generation of Pokémon games.
I look forward to seeing what you know. :)

Now give me another Japanes-language related challenge >=O!

The Teru-Sama is SUPPOSED to be the GS Ball. At least from what I hear.

I've heard it's the G/S version of the Clear Bell. I dunno if it's true, but that's all I know about it.

Never heard of it before, but there is a GS ball in the game, so that may be it.

Well, sama doesn't mean ball, Trickster. Gulzar is right on the meaning.

Unfortunally, I don't have any solid info on the Teru-sama. It could be a test object or like you said, something to fill in blanks in the game's coding. Those are the most logical things it could be. However, I've heard the rumors about it being the GS ball as well, but don't know if it's a fan started rumor or not. Although, I suppose, it's possible that the GS ball was reprogramed into such a generic object durning the translation of the English game...

Can you test what happens when you trade a pokemon to crystal with teru-sama attached? Or can you do that on an emulator? (I assume you use an emulator...)

I think Teru-sama may be the English GS Ball "leftovers" since it was in the japanese version but it was removed. And another thing, why are master balls in your items pocket and not in your Pokeballs pocket??

No, it's not.

You can get BOTH Teru-Sama AND GS Ball in Crystal :/

Look, the GS Ball is called the GS Ball in the English versions:

Teru-Sama takes up all of the empty item digits that are not used.

In RSE/FRLG, There is an Item called "????????" That has the exact same purpose.

The onlt thing useful about Teru-Sama is that you can sell it for ALOT of money :)

Besides that, nothing.

Lol... I have infinite Teru-Samas... They're in my Key Items pocket, so I can repeadetly sell them for a ton of cash...

And guess where I got it?

Pokemon Stadium 2!

I was looking at my Yellow (on Stadium), and noticed that there were Pokemon in my Box 13. (Yellow only goes up to 12, btw) One was a Beedrill (w/Stun Spore, Petal Dance, Submission, and Hi Jump Kick) and the other one was a regular Ditto, except for the fact that it was HOLDING a Clear Bell. So I said to myself... "Maybe I can trade this Ditto to my Gold, and have a Clear Bell!" I did, and as it turned out... Instead of Clear Bell, I got the Teru-Sama. Stadium still recognised it as the Clear Bell, though, so it was put into my Key Items. I can sell it over, and over, and over again without it ever running out!

Because the slot of Data that Clear Bell takes up is unused in Gold ans Silver, so any Crystal-Only items like Clear Bell, GS Ball, and Blue Card would turn into a Teru-Sama.

No, because the GS Ball doesn't exist as an item of the final version of the game, like Mew or Celebi, which these two Pokemon can only be obtained via cheating or special Nintendo events.

weelll, this stuff about hacking games really interests me. SO, has any1 tried talking 2 Kurt when u have the GSball/ Teru Sama? he supposedly takes it from u, and , after a while, give sit back and u goto Ilex forest and talk 2 the shrine and it gives u a fight with Celebi or sumthin...

but I don't believe that, but it's always fun trying glitches!

Teru-Sama IS NOT the GS Ball!!! Read my ealier posts in this thread

THe Celebi Event can onl;y happen in Japanese Crystal Versions that recived the Mobile phone event way back in the GSC era IN JAPAN ONLY.

Oh, and BiZ, GS Ball is Called the GS Ball in the English Crystal because it is still in the coding ;/

Blue Card, GS Ball, and Clear Bell =/= Teru-Sama.

In G/S, they're just empty slot void of use.

The "Surf Board" does not exist.

I've never heard of such thing.

If it has anything to do with Surfing Pikachu, it's a lie. IIRC You have to beat Stadium 2 (Aka Stadium 1 in English) using the Yellow Version Pikachu as one of your six Pokemon.

I can't completely remeber, but I KNOW it has to do with using the Yellow Pikachu.

Locke Yggdrasill
15th May 2006, 2:17 AM
No, the Surf Board exists in yellow version. It's a beta item. Obviously, judging by its name, it was going to be used as the surfboard for the surfing game. It also makes a "cameo" appearance: When you're in the Seafoam islands using your Pikachu-with-surf and you drop down the holes, instead of the generic picture of the Seel, you get a pikachu on a surfboard. I'll try to look up the sprite. Back to the subject: IIRC, it's a form of the "nickname" item in Yellow version. It doesn't replace it, but it does much the same thing in certain spots.

You´re wrong. The Surf Board does exist (gamesharkly, obviously). It´s name is ?????, you can buy it for $0 on Pokemarts GSing, it effect is obvioous, it lets you Surf without a Surfing Pokemon or the proper Badge

Locke Yggdrasill
15th May 2006, 2:22 AM
Apparently we've come to a disagreement. You say that the effect is obvious, and I say it's obvious, but our effects differ.
Gulzar, might I suggest next researching why when the "catch other trainer's pokemon" code is on and you use a master ball out of battle, it glitches up and takes you to random screens? I forget the screens, as it's been years since I've hacked R/B/Y. While I'm looking for the Pika sprite, I'll look into this as well.

While I'm looking for the Pika sprite, I'll look into this as well.

A Surfing Pikachu has that sprite in ALL of the Handheld Games in both the First and Second Generation.

It's not exclusive to one location, either.

Edit: Meh. I don't pay much attention to RGBY anyways :/

Locke Yggdrasill
15th May 2006, 3:11 AM
Oh, okay, thank you. I wasn't aware of this. I suppose I made a mistake by not testing the scenario in more than one location and game.

Also, I got a video; it's an AVI, but it's 50.3 MB. It's a video of me using the surfboard and surfing on the water in Viridian. 12 seconds and 50.3 mb. I don't see how that works. :<
Ask if you want it, since it's so long.

Whoa, dudes, totally off topic! I leave for two days and this happens. This thread is about Teru-Sama in Pokémon GSC, nothing to do with beta items in RBY. If you want to talk about the “surf-board” then make a thread in the RBY section. Sheesh…

Hegemon Locke Yggdrasill: Your research suggestion is a valid one, but please discuss programming in this thread (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=105571).

Umm, keep the good ideas coming?

I suppose we can't really ever know what it's used for, unless we ask a game developer.

Perhaps the name references Super Nerd Teru in the game? That's what I first thought when I first heard the name. Then Teru-sama makes more sense. Maybe one of the game's designers was a fan of this Super Nerd Teru guy? You know that game designers can be weird (*reference to 'All your base are belong to us')

Either that, or Teru was a son/father/teacher/beloved pet of one of the designers.

I can't remember if this was red or gold(I think red), but I used a monster brain(an uncommon cheat device for pokemon) and somehow ended up with a teru-sama in my pack. When I used it, it allowed me to walk through walls. That's what my encounter was. I know there's another ????? item in red that allows you to walk through walls, and I don't know if my game cartridge was messed up and they got mixed up por what.

The teru-sama is a place holder item so it is every item maded but not obtainable, aka surf board, gs ball, clear bell, etc. on http://www.trsrockin.com some people have said you can give it to Kurt wait a while he gives it back and then you go to the shrine and fight celebi but sometimes it is messed up looking probably since it is beta programing
btw teru-sama means teru= to shine, sama= important person
it makes no since but thats the translation

Nope. San = Mr.

Sama is something else, and I've all sorts of different translations of both Teru and Sama over the years.

Deokishisu

The Teru-Sama is a place filler. where blank spaces were, Teru-Sama would be in that spot. In Gold and Silver, spaces with the same hex value as the GS Ball, Clear Bell, and Blue Card (In Crystal) were Teru-Sama because that item's name/effect/basic information were absent in G/S because only those items were only programmed in Crystal.

To the rumor that you could give teru-sama to kurt in G/S and activate the Celebi event, that is plausible. If you had a Teru-Sama that took the place of where the GS Ball is in Crystal, it MIGHT happen. This is only if the programmers intended the celebi event and left beta info in-game.

Well, the shrine is in Ilex Forest in Gold and Silver isn't it?

Perhaps they intended it, but didn't get the mobile adapter stuff sorted in time for launch...

I mean, it makes sense - Crystal came out in Japan nearly a year after Gold and Silver's release over there.

Plausable, don't you think?

In japan a nintendo event gives you a GS ball which after letting kurt see it, you go to the shrine and Celebi comes out to battle. Tera-sama is all the items not in Gold/Silver and the GS ball. Since the GS ball is an item all by itself that is what the tera-sama must be.(The tera-sama is 100% the GS ball in Crystal but cannot be definite in G/S)

9th July 2006, 8:57 PM
Yes, you're right, but since Teru Sama is supposed to represent *more* than one item, this is why there is sometimes major glitches when you try to get Celebi using it.

Sometimes it may work without any problems, but other times it'll mess up.

Sorry to post in a dead thread, but this is bothering me.

Teru-sama can mean a few things. As ???, it means "ball that shines." As ???, it is somewhat equivlent to Master Teru. Of course, teru means "to shine" in most cases, but sama can mean (?) Mr./Mrs. said politely, (?) sphere/ball, or even (???) summer.

I'm guessing it is closest to the first one. A shining ball would be closest to an actual item (beta GS Ball maybe).

Edit: Well, the forum won't display the kana and kanji. Everywhere there is a ? is a Japanese character.

Gulzar
4th November 2006, 6:11 PM
jnzooger: Your analysis is well researched. It has become much clearer to me that Teru-Sama likely refers directly to the GS Ball, rather than being a developer’s name.
