This is my first tutorial... ever. You need Adobe Photoshop for this, and any queries or comments please post, since I need to make sure I explained everything properly. ^^ And although it's not great, I like the outcome:

http://img350.imageshack.us/img350/4434/junglevine8uj.jpg
If you use it, posting your outcome would be greatly appreciated, and feedback would be awesome - I need to know how to improve.

This is just a short one to show how to load brushes, since some people were having problems:

That was a very good tutorial, P/Arts! *hugs* Thanks!

Here's my first result:

I think I overdid it slightly, and the colours I chose for the gradient blended with the stock too much, but I like it. I'm gonna try once more, though.

Nice. I've only had a quick scan through and it seems clear on how to do it - when I have more time tommorow night, I'll try it out. Your end result rocks, the background and text fit the stock really well.

My results.

Nice job.

Step 1: Lay Down a Little Grunge
Start with a small image, I use 400x170. Then dump the background black, create a new layer and brush a little bit of grunge on. I use a brush set from 22pixels flock called Sneaky_GFX_Dragoneye. I only used two brushes. Drop the opacity of that layer down to 40% or so.

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/3595/step11aw.png

Step 2: Some Soft Abstract
Create a new layer and brush a little bit more with a set of abstract brushes. I used Jashin's brushes set 10, which is downloadable from deviantart.com. Drop the opacity down to 50% or so.

http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/693/step25ne.png

Step 3: Bash It Up
There is a set of brushes called Bash's set 12, downloadable from deviantart.com. They are very unique brushes, and can cause an incredible effect if used in the right place. I find that bash's brushes look best around the edges, but feel free to experiment. Create a new layer and brush some on. Set the blending mode of that layer to "Soft Light"

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/6527/step34nl.png

Step 4: Add Some Stuff to the Emptiness
Sometimes, when you do this there is some leftover black space. That is not good. You need to fill that stuff up. I used jashin's dirty abstract brushes for that. Downloadable from deviantart.com. Drop the opacity of this layer down to 50% or so.

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/5163/step44ne.png

Step 5: Fractalize It
Using some fractal brushes (I used orsonsfractals, from deviantart.com) brush some more. Drop the opacity of this layer down to 70% or so.

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/5263/step53hj.png

Step 6: Fractalize It-AGAIN!
Using some more fractal brushes, brush some more. Don't drop the opacity on this layer.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3096/step65ro.png

Step 7: Darken
Merge the layer into one layer by pressing cntrl+shift+e. Then go to enhance>adjust brightness and contrast>brightness and contrast. Set the brightness to -40 and the contrast to +40.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5044/step73zu.png

Step 8: Techit
Using some tech brushes create a little platform. Then duplicate the layer. Go to edit>stroke>1px black brush on that layer. Drop the opacity of the non stroked layer to 50% or so. Then set the stroked layer to "darken."

http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/5029/another2ts.png

Step 9: Color!
Create a new layer underneath the tech layers. Using a 65 px soft brush start to add the colors that you want. After you have that, go to filter>noise>median and set the amount to 45 pixels or so. Then go to filter>blur>gaussian blur and set the amount to 50 pixels or so. Now, got to enhance>adjust color>hue and saturation and drag the saturation slider down to -65 or so. Then set the layer to "color."

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/7951/step96ed.png

Step 10: Render it Awesome
Put your render in, resize it, and place it in a location you like. Drag it underneath the color layer. Then, take the lassoo tool and set the feather to 40 pixels. Now select part of the render. Cut it, and paste it onto a new layer. Use the nudge tool to put it right on top of where it was before you cut it. THat way it will be part of the normal color, and part of the background color.

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/4467/step105zy.png

Step 11: Text!
Add some text on top of that platform that you made with the tech brushes. Bam! You're done!
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/9982/step119xg.png

Notes
*Remember the thirds rule. Divide the banner into imaginary thirds. The render should go on the dividing line between the middle and one of the outer thirds usually. There are exceptions, like the image in my sig. The render would interfere with the text, so I had to stick it lower and farther to the right.

*Bright colors are not good. Try to stay with very low saturation colors, or else it'll look crappeh, k?

*Borders. Yes, I didn't mention borders, but they're usually a good idea. Stick with a 1 pixel black brush, k. It'll probably look the best. If you want to look fancy, then you'll want to do a 2 pixel colored brush, then a 1 pixel black brush on top of it (see sig for an example.)

*Text. There are a number of styles you can do text. My favorite is a black outline, on top of a layer with colored text, then set the colored layer to linear light. Nice effect. (See the tut text for an example.)

*Fonts. People all have their preferred styles for fonts, but commonly used are pixel fonts. A few recommendations are Silkscreen, pixeldust, sevenet7, Visitor TT2 (BRK), and aerial.

*Gradients. Another way to color things is through gradients. On a new layer, you can use two gradients, in my sig I used yellow and blue, and put them in a style that looked good on this banner.

*Coloring from the start. If you don't plan on brushing a lot and having some black space, which is cool, then you might want to brush in color from the start. It's very hard, IMO to get a good effect, but sometimes it looks better then my coloring method.
Here's a banner I made with coloring from the start
http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/9647/tut24yc.png

*Tech stuff is totally optional. I just think it looks c00l.

Okay all you need is MS Paint which everyone has.

Step One. background.

Get a Backround from google. like a wallpaper

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/969/step16wi.jpg

Step two. The Banner.

Now Just Paste the wallpaper then use this: http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8346/step23hm.png
Then Do This:
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1771/step2again9kk.png

Step 3 adding The Picture.

You Copy an image from any website and make it smaller and put it in the banner:

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8346/step23hm.pnghttp://img80.imageshack.us/img80/551/step31fg.png

Step 4. Adding Text.
Okay To add the text you click the "A" icon and then Right click your banner and hold it and move to make a square, then you type what you want it to say.
When you make the squa, right click it and click text toolbar.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5429/step43pq.png

Hope you understand.

Step 5.Cropping

First when you have your banner at the scroll down(all the way) and do you see that small blue dot in the middle? right click it and hold it and move up(make sure your banner is at the top corner at the left.( then click the blue dot on the right side in the middle and right click and hold and move back.

http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/5607/step52eh.png

Then DO this:
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/6281/step5a8hq.png

Your Done!

Host It Now:

you have to give credit to the wallpaper you took. plus, that banner doesn't take much skill. all you do is paste some images in, add some text and call it a banner. it takes a lot longer to do a good banner in paint. I highly suggest that you get photoshop or paint shop pro. they work well. and if you want to stick with paint, then i wish you luck. here's a paint banner as an example.

Darkwater: I'd reccomend buying Photoshop Elements over Photoshop as the latter is kinda on the expensive side, and Photoshop elements does 95% of what Photoshop does, but much, much cheaper. It's what I use to make mine.

And a question of some of the more banner literate, how do you put those really fancy borders/frames around your banners? I'm not talking about just a plain black border by using stroke. Are there certain kinds of brushes you use for them, or what?

the boldness is seconded ;). I use photoshop elements 2 and damn, I can create better banners than some CS2 users

about the question "for the more banner literate", You can do multiple stroke layers with different colors and different blending options and different lengths. Another way to do it is this:

Step 1: New Layer
Step 2: Fill it black or white, depending on what color border you plan on. if it's a light color, use black, if it's a dark color, use white.
Step 3: Edit+Stroke+20px (color) brush
Step 4: Filter+Blur+Gaussian blur (23.2 radius)
Step 5: Set the blending mode to lighten/darken depending on if you chose a dark/light color.

get it?

I've been having trouble with text on photoshop CS2. I'm not sure how to give it an outline or a special glow or something. Can anyone help me out?

Saffire Persian
28th June 2006, 6:58 PM
Well, if you go to blending options, you have this menu that says "Stroke" that lets you outline the text in any color you choose. Usually a 1px outline does wonders if you just want a good outline. (my banner has it if you want to see an example. See the tiny black outline around the yellow text?) In my Photoshop, you have to simplify the text layer first before you stroke, but I believe it's different in CS2.

You can get a glow, I think, by using the Stroke option, too by adding more pixels. Or one of the styles and effects called "outer glow" which will also do the trick. ^_^

Ohh - thank you. ^^ *goes to try it out* It's really helpful. And yes, Photoshop Elements 2 is great. ^^ I was using it up 'till last week (and had then been using it for about two years...on a Mac no less. ^^) and it's an awesome program. I like the layout better for it than CS2 and the like. Though I have Photoshop Elements 3 now, thanks to my uncle. ^^ Just as good, though it's mostly the same thing.

Umm, I'm not sure whether or not this goes here. I need help with making banners with GIMPshop (which is similar to Photoshop, except not) I was trying to blend two or three pictures to make a spiffy banner, but the trouble is, when you paste an image onto another one, it pasts in the middle. I wanted it to go on the side, and I can't figure out how to move it.

the boldness is seconded ;).

Step 5: Set the blending mode to lighten/darken depending on if you chose a dark/light color.

get it?

oooo, I love you!!!! If I get into the top 8, i'l try that

uhhh...quick question...like Im really new to photoshop..like I just started like 3 days ago messing with it...but how do you put pics in something without having the white background around it...like the first one in this thread...the spider-man...how do you put it in another picture out having the white around it? sorry for being a n00b...xD

erase the white with the magic eraser (click and hold the eraser tool, then click the eraser with a little star by it.)

:) happy photoshopping. also, remember, the best banner making comes from observing and asking what methods people use.

=*Hoenir's Sig Tutorial Number 2*=

NOTE: THIS TUTORIAL IS ASSUMING YOU KNOW THE BASIX O' PHOTOSHOP.

Step 1: Dump it Dark
Start with a new canvas, I used 400*160 pixels, but you can choose many different sizes. Then dump it a very dark color. I chose 4A2500, a dark brown, but depending on what render you're gonna use, it's different for everybody. Note that this color might change later.

http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/449/c4dstep1copyyf1.png

Step 2: Starting To Render!
Now, start throwing in some abstract renders. This is difficult to get right, but you should get it soon. Erase/smudge different parts, until you have a couple of renders that go well together. Set all of those render layers to linear dodge. Note that color does not matter at this point, so ignore it if you colors look ugly together.

http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/6343/c4dstep2dv4.png

Step 3: More Rendering
Okay, repeat the last step. You want a fairly complex variety of renders. This is what mine looks like after 6 renders. Normally i would use 20 or so, but since this is a tutorial, I'll stop here.

http://img350.imageshack.us/img350/6498/c4dstep3xo0.png

Step 4: Suck All The Color Out Through a Straw
Now, flatten all of the layers into one, by pressing cntrl+shift+e, or, on a mac, command+shift+e. Now go Enhance>adjust color>remove color.

http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/6098/c4dstep4cr8.png

Step 5: Boost the Contrast Before You Regret It
Go to enhance>brightness and contrast>brightness and contrast, and increase the brightness and the contrast until it looks good. This step is crucial, so don't even think about skipping it :o! I used +20 brightness and +80 contrast. Yes, you need that much.

http://img350.imageshack.us/img350/27/c4dstep5dh6.png

Step 6: Sharpen it Like A Porygon
Go to filter>sharpen>sharpen and press cntrl+f as many times as you need to. I used it 3 times.

http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/2420/c4dstep6sk4.png

Step 7: Sparklyness!
Duplicate the layer, go to filter>blur>gaussian blur and set the radius to 3.5. Now set the blending mode to lighten. Pretty, eh?

http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/2269/c4dstep7zl0.png

Step 8: Add in the Real Render![b]
Put in the real render, and remove all color. Resize, rotate, etc.

http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/5030/c4dstep8da4.png

[b]Step 9: Give it that "Blast" Thang
Make a new layer, get a soft brush, set it to 30% opacity and brush a little bit where the blast appears. If you don't have a converging point where all the renders meet, ignore this step.

http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/4285/c4dstep9dj5.png

Step 10: Render Effects
Repeat steps 6 and 7 on the render layer.
http://img331.imageshack.us/img331/8045/c4dstep10lv8.png

Step 11: Blend the Render In
Duplicate the background layer, set it to lighten, and erase all but a few of the streaks. Move this layer over the render. Drop the opacity if you want to.

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5373/c4dstep11qe8.png

Step 12: Splatter
Take a splatter brush, I used some from angryblue.com, and brush some on.

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/6218/c4dstep12wy4.png

Step 13: Color It
Create a gradient map adjustment layer, and pick two colors that you like. Set the layer to soft light.

http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/351/c4dstep13nm3.png

Step 14: A Dot Patter
Create a new file, 3x3 pixels, and put a one pixel dot in a really really light color in the middle of the document. Then go to edit>define pattern, and dump this pattern over in a new layer. Erase parts around the render, then set the layer to soft light.

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4248/c4dstep14ew4.png

Step 15: Text!
Type in some text, add a border, etc. I won't really go into detail here.

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1546/c4dstep15dg9.png

Step 16: Border!
Create a new layer, dump it white, Go to edit>stroke>1 pixel black brush and hit ok, then set the layer to darken and you're done!

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/3006/c4dstep16bp1.png

All the images are Links :).
I'm not pro yet, and this is my first tut.
Not bad, considering I was screenshooting and writng this :)

I hope this helps for ppl who have trouble doing banners, and post ur results here!

1.Start off by choosing the size of the file you want to do. I will use a 400x100. I will be making a Tidus signature.

2.Fill the background with the main color of your graphic. Mine will be blue.
You can download brushes Here (http://www.photoshopbrushes.com/brushes.htm). Or look some up on DeviantArt.

I started off with a simple brush.

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/1.jpg)

3.Choose a light source. I will be adding a lens flare. I chose 33mm Prime.

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/2.jpg)

Another Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/3.jpg)

4.Press shift + Control + N to make a new layer.

5.I filled the new layer with my secondary color, which is White. Then I set the blend mode at Overlay. You can choose whatever blending mode fits best.

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/4.jpg)

6.Now, it's not very good yet is it? Make another layer.
Edit > Fill > Custom pattern. Choose watever pattern you desire :)

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/5.jpg)

7.I put the blending mode to Color burn

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/6.jpg)

8. I don't like the texture, so I go. Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.
Radius 8.7

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/7.jpg)

9. Not bad, but I want something cooler. So I add another layer, with the Main color. Remember The white? It wasn't the secondary color, I fooled ya *muahaha*. Tidus hair color is yellow isn't it? so that's my secondary color. By using the blend mode Difference. The blue morphed into yellow over the white :D. If you wanna know what color is the "difference" of the color you want, do Filter > Render > Difference clouds. The difference effect also gives some nice tones to the blue :D

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/8.jpg)

10. Time for the render. Yes, i'm UBER lazy when it comes to cleaning pics. So I don't XD. I take a picture with a white BG, and put it to Color Burn. If the BG is dark, put it to lighten

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/9.jpg)

11. The text. Write it in wtv color u want. Then Layer > Layer Style > Blending options > Stroke Use the setting on the pic.

Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/10.jpg)
12. Blend the text

13. Now the border New Layer.
Select the whole banner. Edit>Stroke>choose your setting. I recomment adding a thin black border before your other bigger one, than the ones thats blended.
Final Example (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/11.jpg)

14.Blend it, and it's done!

Finished Product : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/rufinito18/BG%20Tut/TUTORIALBANNER.jpg

I hope this helps for ppl who wanna do banners. Please post ur results if u wanna try this out :)

First use circle brush, the best is with 3-5 colours
http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/3636/2dk4.png
Then Filter>Brush Stroke> Sprayed Stroke
Let the Stroke Length be 4, and the Spray Radius by 20, Stroke Direction be Right Diagonal
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/4840/3nj0.png
Next Filter> Distort> Disffuse Glow
Graininess :9
Glow Amount: 2
Clear Amount: 20

Final Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur
Let the Radius be o.5 pixels (Must follow)
Then u can add some other brushes u like and it's done^^

good to know ._.

you have your method, we have ours, they have theirs. and really, there are multiple gfx communities.

IMO the only real way to get good banners with defaults is making smudge brushes sutch as the X brush.

and if you use someone else's brushes, you blend, use filters, adjustment layers etc. it's not like copying and pasting images on. It's like taking a free stock image, altering it, then blending it with a gajillion others.

unless you mean some crakcpot gfx communitys that probably doesn't really compare to some of the great ones, then I would have to disagree. All of the gfx communities that I've visited have not used defaults.

Simple Banner Tutorial: (using Photoshop)

Step 1
First, open up new image [390x115] and take your image. Mine was Roxas but you can choose whatever you like.
[Crop it, or do what you normally do to your images]

http://i8.*******.com/25k38th.jpg
http://i8.*******.com/25k38th.jpg

Step 2
Next, duplicate the image. Since I found the image a bit too dark, I set the layer to 'Screen' to brighten it up, if your picture is too bright, set the layer to Multiply or Color Burn and play around with the Opacity until you're content.

http://i8.*******.com/25k3ame.jpg
http://i8.*******.com/25k3ame.jpg

Step 3
Now here's the fun part, BRUSH TIME! Add a new layer and let 'em loose. I added some random brushes, most were swirl brushes around the ends of the banner but you can add whatever you want. [If your picture is dark or night like, use some sparkle brushes to make a starry effect] I found this wonderful swirl brush pack and if you want to use it on your banner, it's here (http://www.deviantart.com/view/14899161/). Set the layer mode to Overlay or leave it at normal and change the opacity to something a bit faded.

http://i8.*******.com/25k3blf.jpg
http://i8.*******.com/25k3blf.jpg

Step 4
Now add your text [if any] to the banner and do whatever you normally do with it.

Optional: If you want, take your pencil tool set it to square brush pixel size 1. Then change the Mode to dissolve and change the opacity near 40-50% and apply the brush under your text.

Now, add your border. And ta-da!

This might sond really n00bie but, how do you get rid of the White background from a picture on Adobe Photoshop CS2?

.:Sen:.
29th August 2006, 4:47 PM
You can try using the Magic Wand tool, and when you've selected the white background you want to delete. Then go to edit and cut it out.

Go to the paint bucket, set the mode to clear, make sure that the option on the left of the small sqaure panel says Foreground, and then click on the places you want erased.

Uh, Save the brush set again to your desktop, click Start, then Run, then Browse, then go to that little scroll bar at the top of the Browse window you just click on, scroll till you see Local Disk C: then click on that. Click Program Files, then click Adobe, then click Adobe Photoshop [whatever version you have] then click Presets, after that click Brushes, and put your brush set in the Adobe Photoshop Only folder. Hope that wasn't too hard. ^^;

Hello all! I have done two banners =D wee

1 (http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/3811/kyuubibannermb8.png)- Made using Nagashi's first tutorial (it's my first ever banner on PS >.<)
2 (http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/3830/narupixbannerec4.png)- Made using Jamie's In Depth wave tutorial (second ever banner on PS 8D )

Note also that I have a Swedish PS so I needed to translate some words that I didn't know, though some of the english words weren't in the Swedish internet dictionary (and I was to lazy to check my big dictionary in my room =P ) so I skipped a part ^_^; , on your tutorial, Nagashi =/

Well, I'll post here when I've done some other banners with the tutorials, I'm gonna try all! =D

And also, Shagger Mamodo, you need to upload your banner on a site so that we can see it. try imageshack (http://imageshack.us/) =)

EDIT: Sorry if this might sound a bit n00bish but how do you outline texts in Photoshop?
thanx :)

In Photoshop first create a new layer. Go to Select>All to select your border. Now go to Edit>Stroke and set the size to 3 px, set the stroke to "inside" and have White as the color. Apply the stroke and set this layer to Soft Light. Without clicking off create a new layer. Go to Edit>Stroke again and apply a 1 px black stroke. Leave this as a normal layer.

That should do it.

I made a sig using all of the tuts on the first page of thread( i took ideas from all of them). The banner is in my sig, it should be kinda blue colored. It was kinda hard though cuz i had made the bluish/Blackish background but the image that i used in the banner was kinda yellowish and i didnt want to convert it to black and white and then put in the banner. Anyway next time i will try to just make a random banner using fallen guardian's tut. It actually seems a pretty solid tag, for the most part - the colors work well, and the stock seems reasonably blended. The largest flaw that I can see, however, is its lack of depth - try making a black and white gradient render and setting the layer to Soft Light. That might help a bit.

Tidus is too dark and to be honest the Render doesn't really match the BG. Use some Gradient Maps set to soft light and pick BG colors that compliment or are taken fromt the render you use. Makes for some nice banners and sigs.

Also, if anyone is interested I'll be making a tut for this type of sig:

Ok you fellow gimp users need help. here's a tut on the first post.
Ok follow the steps till the fractals part.
For the fractals I use flames of 2 different graindents Make both of those layers overlayed. To do this you must make a new transparent layers for each new flame at the end I merge the same gradented layers in to one so I have 2 layers. (makes this easier)
For the multiplication part you must first save your image and DO NOT EXIT OUT of gimp. Then open it up in MS paint or some other program. Then copy the image on to gimp as a new layer (make a new layer then anchor down copyed selectoin. Then use colorize (under layers) to what ever you want. Then use multipy and your done.
I will make a better tut just wait till after School.

facetious, you really should keep your mouth shut, especially when you don't even know what you're talking about. People use other people's brushes on their banners to make it look nicer but you don't see anyone claiming the brushes they have on their banners their own. Besides, the people who made those brushes allow anyone that downloads their brush set to use it for whatever their reason. They know the risks of people stealing their brushes and claiming it as their own, but they go on with it and let people download it. Nobody here who made a tutorial said that the brushes on their banner tutorial is their own that rightfully is someone elses. Now unless you want to get warned, I suggest you take yourself elsewhere.

For those who are wondering: I removed the background faded stock because it did not suit my sig. In mosy circumstances, it would work well with other sigs, so I kept the original in there. A free photoshop like program is GIMP. Its layout is almost identical to PS, and has most of the same filters. (even a few photoshop is without)

For those who don't feel like spending a whole lot of money on a program (unless you want to pursue digital design as a job)

@John's Knight: Yah, I do know how to load the brushes, all I need help on is how come the brushes aren't showing up in the brushes folder?

Hoenir-Oh. Well, I know about gimp. But, isn't PS CS2 about $600 (US)?

An other question. Is it a bad idea to get it used? Because I found a used one for about $200 or $300.

Hey, does anyone have any GIMP tuts? Or are any of the others appliable?

Jem
1st January 2007, 10:23 AM
Gimp is almost an exact copy of photoshop. Most of PS tutorials will also work in Gimp. Most, not all mind you.

pixel2life.com has several gimp tutorials.

So, gimp is free. I told my mother that and that it's just as good and maby better than ps cs2. So she sais that would be a scam if that good of a program is free. I just need to know if there can be any issues about getting it or if there would be a chance of getting a virus or something like that.

I use windows.

Edit-I also found cheeper pscs2's. Would it be safe to buy it used or so?

Jem

GIMP is 100% safe. Download it straight from their website and you won't get a virus.

It's not better overall than Photoshop, mostly because it started as a student project. It is similar, however, and it has a few filters that Photoshop doesn't. But in return, it is also missing several filters Photoshop has.

Photoshop is also more CPU demanding, because it's more powerful graphically. It also has more resources, such as brushes, and tutorials. If you can afford it, I would go ahead and buy Photoshop CS2, and move up to CS3 (iMac only) when it comes out.

For beginners (or the poor/cheap crowd,) GIMP is a nice program, and for free, you really can't beat it.

I just downloaded a set of brushes, but they won't show up on the list. Could this be because I have an older version? [I don't know which version it is^^;]

See, this is the same problem that happens to me, how don't know how to fix it, but did you unzip(aka extract) the file to the burshes file? Or, atleast somewhere?

Jem
3rd January 2007, 10:41 PM
Once you download the brushes, instead of loading them, you can place them in the brushes folder. Adobe > Your Version of PS > Presets > Brushes

It will make it appear on the list, whether or not is compatible with your version. Once you try to load them is when you find out if they're compatible or not.

Yes, that's what I do with my brushes, but they still don't appear on the list. =\

Then, I really don't know what the problem is. Are the brush files ABR type? What version of the program are you using? Did you buy it, or crack?

I guess it's time you learn your way around the filters ^_^

I practiced some more, after a lot more tries.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k81/WackoG/Banners/Donaldcopy.png

That's my favorite now.

Rasengan: Here's how I do it:
1) Download brush.
2) If it's in a ZIP. folder, open the folder, and move the brush file out of the folder and onto the desktop.
3) Go to PS, click the brush tool.
4) Click the arrow that is pointing down on the top toolbar.
5) Select Load brush on the menu.
6) Go to your Desktop files, and the brush that you downloaded should be there.

Actually, I got a new Photoshop, so I re-installed it. It works now, but theirs a slight problem..

When I try to use burshes it says "The Sketch disks or full", or something like that. Is that a problem?

I would buy photoshop, instead of cracking it. A lot less problems to deal with. And, when you get a problem like this, you can just call them and have them help you. They do check your serial code, and If it's not unique, they refuse to help. They know almost everything about Photoshop, and they should, because that's their job.

Actually, if you want a quick neat border, paint is the way to go, since Photoshop doesn't have the rectangle tool coughcoughIthinkcoughgough.

Jem
12th January 2007, 11:30 PM
It does, but it's called the line tool; it would be easier if you used the pencil tool for 1 pixel borders though.

Nagashi

Actually, Select All, then go to Edit>Stroke and select "Inside" and "1 px". That'll make a border.

The point of the banner... It's basically a picture with some huge birds pasted on, and a red [default paint coloured] line added on top. You need to be good at scratching if you only have paint.

^GIF is usually best for transperent items. If you have a full pic, PNG is best. But then again, Photoshop can save high quality JPG.

>>; well you need a program that is capable of doing this, have a little creativity with your own originality, and simply follow directions.

thing is, you shouldn't be very lazy to read the directions, if you're flat out lazy it seems that you don't want to do it at all and you'll screw up. x_x; one you play around whatever you have [i have photoshop cs2], you're able to learn easily. it's what i did, i played around and i learned it within two days. D: it kills the time but it's fun. but once you got the hang of it, it's really adicting. >_o;

you add the border by using the pencil tool. i know it takes a long time, but at least it looks a little better.

K-os

Paint allows you to make a rectangle in one click. Of course you'll have to transparentize after you add the border.

Messed around with the banner from my previous post:

I'd almost set the scan lines to Soft Light and erase them with a Soft Grunge Brush for a better look. Scanlines aren't something I like to use since they degrade signatures unless used sparingly.

Anyway, I figured I'd post a recent tut I made.

Gah, >_<;.

The only problem I'm having is in the picture, I just want the character, or image, and there is a background that is really comlicated and I can't take it away with the wand tool becuase it will make the image look .. "weird".

That's the ONLY thing I don't know how to do. ;_;

Meh. I have some questions. First off, how do you download ZIP brushes? You're supposed to extract them or something. Tried it and it didn't work. Also, how do you make the stock smaller so it can fit within an avatar and not have only the person's eye show up? DX Sorry for all the n00bish questions. I'm kind of new to Photoshop. ^.^;

And since I don't want this post to be all spammish, I've tried Lust's transparent on the third banner I've made so far. No brushes and only the default text which is why it sucks so much. ><;
