View Full Version : Nickname types?

Souless_Heat
17th July 2006, 12:22 AM
This was something I had considered. Whenever I do nicknames I make them specific so I wanted to know who else does it. Just say what the nicknames are and what they are named after.

For example here is mine:

Pluto / Seviper
Venus / Milotic
Jupiter / Sceptile
Saturn / Salamence
Mercury / Lanturn
Neptune / Gyarados

This is my Emerald team and I nicknamed them after the planets

I normally give my Pokemon Japanese nicknames. In past games I would name them all after characters in anime like Inuyasha or Wolf's Rain, etc. In my current Emerald game I have only three Pokemon, nicknamed the following:

Razan - Combusken
Narihiro - Grovyle
Momoko - Marshtomp

I'm just going for random Japanese names that aren't really found in any anime series. That way, at least to me, it makes my Pokemon seem more original than if they were actually named after another character. X3

I named my Eveelutions by the first part of their name. Does that count? o.O

Vaporeon: Vapor
Flareon: Flare
Espeon: ESP... and so on.

I had a friend who named them after characters from FMA. I named myself in the game after Hayate from the manga Hayate Cross Blade.

And any sort of nickname counts

Usually I don't go for types, but on the challenge me and my friend are doing I have:

All names must consist of four letters
All names must end in RO.

So far, Toro = Combusken, Xoro = Dustox, Ziro = Crobat, Coro = Lombre, Arro = Aron, and the Wynaut egg will be Wyro/Auro.

(M) Beautifly - Henry

(F) Manectric - Jade
(M) Relicanth - Relico (Ok, this one is an exception.)

I generally go for names that somehow relate to the Pokémon, but aren't cliché like "Charcoal" for a Charmander or something. (Okay, admittedly bad example.)

Manectric - Arcturus (I don't remember where I've heard this, but 'Arc' makes me think of the way electricity moves. ((Shrugs.)))
Charizard - Dante (This isn't actually my idea, rather my 'Big Sister,'s', as it's the name of her Charmander in our fic, but it's so perfect. Obviously named for "Dante's Inferno")
Altaria - Gladiaria (This comes from Sakurazaki Setsuna's Pactio title in Negima, this time in reference to her wings, which I associate with little Chiru-chan.)
Metagross - Aegis (Named for a shield from some folklore or another, I don't really remember. Anyway, it's a strong substance/shield, and that's basically what Metagross is.)
Absol - Nosferatu (I've seen this name used in a variety of ways, all of them referencing dark/evil magic, thus Absol or Umbreon gets it.)
Scyther - Masamune (Refers to a famous sword-smith from Japan, as well as to his swords, it's an obvious choice for Scyther.)
Pidgeot - Celsius (Taken originally from the airship in Final Fantasy X-2, it refers to a type of cloud, perfect for Flying-types.)

I guess I'll post more once I get around to remembering them...

Proton=male Plusle;311;

I like to give my Pokemon random nicknames that hardly anyone else would use. Let's use a few of my Sneasel army as examples.

Nightwish - Named after the best band ever.
Septiembre - Spanish for September, my birth month.
Fai-Miroke and Airan-Jo - Former roleplay characters of me and a friend.
Natsumeya, Hiisuose and Azamitial - Japanese names of Sabrina, Tucker and Lucy respectively with some letters added onto the end.
Reqosh, Teliyu, Yetrus and Khimonia - Neopets that belong to my friends. Yes, I used to play Neopets.

I would name all my Sneasel but my army is huge and i'd be here all night.

I usually use mythology-based names:
Charizard: Tiamat (The queen of dragons)
Vaporeon: Jorgamund (Huge sea serpent)
Raichu: Raijin (Japanese Thunder God, and basis for Mortal Kombat's Raiden)
Scizor: Thanatos (Death deity (uses scythe))
Espeon: Amaterasu (Japanese Sun deity)
Umbreon: Apollo (Moon Deity)

Once did an entire game where I used names from Warcraft III, though.
Vaporeon (I use Vaporeon a lot): Proudmoore
Aerodactyl: Deathwing,
etc.

And once I did the same with Magic: the Gathering names, though the only one I can remember was my Houndoom, Chainer (Favourite Pkmn and favourite Magic character)

Rayquaza: Quazzel. I'm not sure how I came up with it, but Quazzel just fits.
Pinser: Da Reaper. Not too good, but I came up with it on the spot.

Nidogod
19th July 2006, 7:32 PM
Lots of times I try to give them a slight variation of their real names. Nidoking often becomes Nidogod (heh), Jolteon is usually Volteon, Gyarados is usually changed to Leviados, ect. Besides that, my Vileplume is name Salvia after my favorite plant based drug, and Hariyama is Buu because I think Makuhita looks like Buu from DBZ.

Edit: My new Zubat is also Alucard. Woot!

I do my nicknames in a very similar way. Im upset that Im not as unique as I thought I was. Here are mine:

Mightyena: Aias (after greek hero Ajax, a reference to Odysseus' dog being called Argos)
Blastoise: Argo (The name of the Boat used by Jason... Because I sail on her...)
Buterfree: Thetis (Nymph and mother of Achilles)
Crobat: Nyx (Primordial personification of darkness)

Shiny Gengar (m)Hades (so I have a team!)

Articuno: Boreas (The Greek name of the chilling North Wind)
Carizard: Prometheus (The Titan who stole Fire from the gods and gave it to humans)
Golem: Atlas (The Titan who holds up the heavans

However, I have some exceptions for varying reasons:

Gorebyss: Haku (from the movie Spirited away.. dont wanna spoil it, but he turns out to be a river spirit.)
Swellow: Topaz (inexplicable... but has long been the name of my brid companion for RPGs)
...
Jolteon: Jolteon (A regular in my team, but I have never found a nickname which suited....)

I like to use part of their name and end it with y. I might throw an extra consonant in there for fun, though.

My tream:
Dragzy
Gyarzy
Zamzy
Lappy
Steelsy
Skarsy

With one notable exception, when I nickname a Pokemon I usually make up a name that starts with the first letter of their type. (Or at least their type at the time I name it.)
Examples:
Alan Abra/Kadabra
Laria Linoone
Eve Eevee (yet to be renamed, and this one's chosen for a reason)

I guess I got that habit from from Piers Anthony's books.
And the big exception. I nicknamed the first Lunatone I caught MoonShadow. I'd decided I would take a Lunatone with Shadowball up against Tate & Liza, and that name was a foreshadowing of it. (I didn't get or use Shadowball till just before that gym battle. And that Lunatone kicked some butt.)

I haven't actually nicknamed any of my Pokemon yet, but I plan to give them fitting Japanese nicknames in D/P.
