View Full Version : Information About the Infraction Point System
Serebii
24th November 2006, 4:00 PM
Thats Right, we've decided to overhaul the Modding & Banning System.
Jess & I have worked through all the kinks and have decided on this.
Ladies, Gentlemen, Hermaphrodites, Asexual things (Literal Sense of Asexual not your crazy sense that it just means no attraction), I present to you; The SPP User Infraction System
The way it works is on a Point system, similar to our old Warning System, but more in depth. We have set out a certain amount for the most common things, however if necessary, our mods and admins can set Custom Ones with Custom Points and Expiry Dates, so be warned
All of them have an expiry of One and a Half Months...we DO believe in Rehabilitation here at SPPf
Foul Language: 1 point
Abusing Smilies: 3 points
Advertising: 3 points
Asking for/offering forbidden/hacked Pokémon: 3 points
Asking for help with Cheat Devices/Codes: 3 points
Bumping Topics: 3 points
Disobeying the Rules of a specific sub-forum: 3 points
Double Posting: 3 points
Flaming/Insulting Other People: 3 points
Providing Links to Downloads of Illegal Content: 3 points
Replying to Spam: 3 points
Sending Chain PMs: 3 points
Sending Unsolicited PMs: 3 points
Spamming: 3 points
Triple Posting: 4 points
Mini-Modding: 5 points
Posting with the intent to annoy others: 5 points
Quadruple Posting: 5 points
Sending Abusive/False Reports: 5 points
Continuously disobeying the Rules of a specific sub-forum: 6 points
Quintuple Posting: 6 points
Posting more than 5 times in a row: 15 points
Posting Porn or other explicit material: 70 points
Pure Trolling: 100 points
Evading Ban: 130 points
Giving your account details to a Banned user: 130 points
And for Bans, here are how the points go;
20 Points:- 1 Week Ban
40 Points:- 2 Week Ban
60 Points:- 1 Month Ban
80 Points:- 2 Month Ban
100 Points:- 3 Month Ban
130 Points:- PermaBan
Now, when the mods give you any infraction points, you will be PM'd stating itand it will be accompanied by a message from the mods, providing a Link to the place that you have done it
You can also just be warned for these and not get the points, at the mods disgression
You guys wanted us to do our job...well now we are...AND THEN SOME.
Please Note - We realise it's not your fault if you double/triple post by accident because of sever lag. Please ensure that you just have a quick check to see if your post has doubled, or thread as the case may be, then you can delete the post. The infractions are really against those who delibrately double/triple post for absolutely no reason other than sheer laziness to edit their previous.
Some visual examples for you, below is the PM that you will receive when you get an Infraction:
http://www.serebiiforums.com/infraction.jpg
And this is how Points Look on your User Profile so you can always check:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/Zephyr_the_Hedgehog/Other%20stuff/points2.png
Oh, I also turned Multi Quote on. If you press the button on 2 or more posts and then press Reply, it'll bring those posts with it so that you can post via that.
Enjoy

So more or less... you have about 6 "infractions" and the 7th you get killed. Thats pretty fair I think....

Thank you Joe and Jess to put this up.

To the above, spamming is a common minor infraction. Sometimes we don't even realize that we did it.
To everything else, I think this is a good system that we needed.

Chain PMs are those annoying things like...
YOUVE BEEN HIT BY A MAGIKARP. SEND THIS TO 6 PEOPLE IN THE NEXT 15 SECONDS OR A RAPIST WILL BURST THROUGH YOUR WALL AND OH YEAH YOULL HAVE BAD LUCK AND A BAD LOVE LIFE FOREVER. IF YOU SEND IT, YOUR CRUSH WILL KISS YOU ON FRIDAY.

No, chain PMs are meant to be sent to many users, they usually contain stuff similar to this:
[some random text]
send this PM to 5 people and you'll find your true love!
Simply put, PMs asking someone to pass on the same pM to a certain amount of users to make a certain thing happen.
They are usually very annoying.

Forward it to a staff member (don#t alter the content in any way though).

YES! Thanks Joe! X3
Just have a question: I know that in an earlier announcement you said that foul language would be kept to a minimum. I just want to make sure it's still kept in here, like, if I say 'wtf' or whatever every now and then, it wouldn't matter right? As long as you don't use it every single post or sentence or w/e, right?
Also, what are the warning points for sigs who break the rules, or is there none and there's a simple usernote? Just curious...

24th November 2006, 4:47 PM
so to figure out how many infraction points we have, we just check how many PM's we have gotten that have infractions listed in them?

24th November 2006, 5:15 PM
What about the issue with the forums. Like how you accidently press submit more than once, because the forums go slow as hell sometimes, and so you get 50+ posts or 50+ topics?
I see no need to warn them for that, unless you just want us to send them a PM saying "Yes, the forums have a problem, they go slow sometimes and if they do not respond right away, please wait for it to respond or go to a 404 page, otherwise you may end up getting multiple posts or topics."
Serebii
24th November 2006, 5:34 PM
We've never banned for that
Double Posting when its the same thing twice is generally accepted as a bug
Its when someone posts
"Hey, how do you get Pikachu"
"Come on, help me"
Requiem's Eclipse
24th November 2006, 5:38 PM
Well, Etebossu, Latios did state that the forums were having slow issues , in a announcement. The rules say check frequently for announcements. The announcement he said was "please press the submit button once because , if you press it alot, the computer would pick up all those submits and post 5 of the same thing." I say it's there loss if they don't check for announcements. They were forewarned about the issue and shouldn't be given leeway.
Hyuu
24th November 2006, 5:52 PM
That sounds like a fair new system ^^ A lot more chances involved for those who are new and don't really know much better, right? And bans are fairer so there will be less complaining about those banned.

Serebii, through the times I have been a member here, sometimes I have accidently multi-post. When I do that, the post are the same or about the same. It seems to be due to a slow computer or a mistake in trying to edit the original post. Can you let that slide given that it was an accident? I can correct it if I spot it, but I'm talking mainly about when it does happen.

Yes, when the forums are slow you might accidently double post.
You won't be punished for this since it's not really your fault, but try to delete the duplicate post if you notice that has happened.
Wait a sec, about unsolicited PMs, does that count if you PM someone that you really don't know in a friendly way, to ask them to be your friend or just to talk?

There is nothing wrong with friend PMs as longs as you don't advertise or annoy the user in any way.

Sure, this isn't the only good solution. But it certainly looks good in theory. I'm not blindly supporting it until I've seen it in action over a period of weeks, but it appears to be thought out well, and it's certainly easier for any forum's staff to adapt to a method they've developed themselves than to modify another forum's methods to suit their needs.

With quotes, it's people who quote amssive sections in one go like say the entire Fanfiction Rules then add one line of their own underneath. Completely pointless, damn annoying :S

Hrm, I dunno if I like this.
It certainly seems fair, that's for sure. But it looks like Modding is going a bit...over-the-top? Like, I know some things are pretty serious, but is this perhaps being treated too seriously?
And yeesh, this whole point system makes me feel like the whole driving point thing. @_@ I have my Drivers' Permit Test in a week and I still don't know if passing a stopped school bus is 3 or 5 points...
Really. This is kind of neat and all, but at the same time it's just a bit wtf. :/
And on swearing, first off it's allowed in certain places, like FacFiction and RPGs (in some cases, at least) so mentioning that might settle some stomachs.
And also, would you still get points off for saying things like 'f***/ing', 'sh*t' or whatever if one or more letters are replaced? Or what if I told someone to get off their lazy 'arse' or said 'effing'?
And sometimes people swear in a joking matter. To their friends, I mean. Like "hey *friend*, this fic is f***ing awesome! *insert rest of review here*" or even "well, *friend* was busy cuz he just sits on his *ss all day, right, dude? XDXDXD"
Will you still get points off in such cases? I know it's only one point and not the end of the world, but I'd like to know for ah, future references.

Interesting that mini-modding is a warnable offence. So, I now wonder if those who respond to spam topics saying "This is spam!" will get both spamming warnings and mini-modding warnings?
I ask the strangest questions. <.<

- I hope this goes into effect in the Other Console forums where people just come in PS3 SUCKS LOLZ OMG get a WII ITS SO COOL without any kind of debate/attachment to an arguement behind it.
Overall the system is cool, but some stuff like petty bickering/fun jabs at each other can be seen by other mods as something different. Like how sometimes little bickers occur in the anime forum, it's all in good fun, but I can see a SERIOUS MOD coming in and taking points away.

Let's hope the new warning system works. And nice, you enabled multi-quote. :)
BTW, I got a suggestion for the warning system. How about also giving points for bypassing the 10 character minimum? By that, I mean this, for example:
Yes*10char*
Pikachu......
This is sometimes annoying, especially on the Games forum.

Excellent system here, Joe and Jess. I must rework how I review fics a bit, but I'm cool with that.
One question, though, and this is mainly for Sandra: For fan-works, is it still okay to use foul language as long as you use the appropriate rating level for the piece and it is placed so that it is obvious (i.e., including PG/PG-13/R in the topic title)? I do not want to get points for using the H-word and D-word in my fic even though I do have [PG/PG-13] in the title of the topic. I just need to make sure I am not violating anything.
Thanks.

Mind explaining why this solution is bad, or what some better ones would be?
Sure, this isn't the only good solution. But it certainly looks good in theory. I'm not blindly supporting it until I've seen it in action over a period of weeks, but it appears to be thought out well, and it's certainly easier for any forum's staff to adapt to a method they've developed themselves than to modify another forum's methods to suit their needs.
Simple, what has been suggested som many times already, the one thing that drives spam here the most are the pretty little pictures that everyone wants to progress with. If the rank images are removed, problem solved, to an extent...

If the rank images are removed, problem solved, to an extent...I agree. The images should be removed; that would remove much incentive for posting SPAM (except for those of the malicious type, but they'll always be with us). Joe most likely will not implement it, though, because it would drastically reduce activity. ;\

Does bumping topics in threads mean changing the subject of a thread with a specific topic? because they did that to one of my threads and I DO NOT want it to happen again.
Bumping a topic is when someone posts in a thread that hasn't been posted in for over a month. Changing the subject of a thread is essentially just wandering off-topic.

Minimodding is when "regular members" do the following...
Dont double post. Its against the rules
In other words, posting just for the sake of reciting the rules. However, if you do something like this..
The move tutor in FR/LG is on Island 4 and it can only accessed after you have beaten the Elite 4, got the National Dex and the Ruby Plate from Island 1.

Ah, well, isn't that the point of User Bars? That's why some users spam so much is so they can have a higher level.
Although, getting a rep point would make me happy! :D
Of course, I'm sure people would have their noob friends rep them so they can be ELITE!

None, they're kinda pointless since we have user ranks here.

Quality depends where it comes from, for instance, I think I can safely say that the Games forum is low quality, due to the fact that no mods actively peruse the topics, so, communities like that, isolated from the rest of SPPf, can easily abuse a reputation system...

I suppose reputation is like communism: In theory it works, but when applied it fails.
Anyway, the reputation thing was just a joke because I always like to jab at Serebii with that about once every 5 months.

Fantastic. And I truly mean it. A regulated system is what works fairest and especially when you wipe the slate clean every month and a half. I'm very impressed Serebii.
And Multi-Quote's good news too in my books. Very useful for analyzing fanfiction.

More rigid to keep up with the members. All signs of flexibility gone...
This should cut down on ban complaints.
Although more rigidness is the last thing we need around here.

why don't you impose a rewards system for the people who make really well thought out and great posts? This forum just tries harder and harder to set up ways to "punish" (lol how lame) people on the internet rather than reward them.
I say something in alternate to this you set up a reward system as well, where great posters perhaps could have their own forum to chat with another if they reached a certain amount of "+" points. It will also increase ways of trying to be a good member as well.

Ah, a good, well thought-out idea that's fair, decently strict while still having room for forgiveness, that most people like...and people still complain about it with no good reason at the ready! Don't you just love humanity?
Anyway, nice new system, blah blah blah, do I really have to say what at least a hundred people before me have said, yadda yadda. And as for multi-quoting...horray for another feature I can't see myself using! Ah well, it's not hurting anything even though I think the multi-quote icons stand out just a *tad* too much. I blame it on the white sheet of paper that's the main focus of the icon but STILL has that grey-purple background like the normal quote icon in there. And the giant quotation marks don't help either. I'm no asthetics expert, but hey, if I've got to complain, let it be about something entirely inconsiquential. :p

This doesn't "punish" people, it makes the rules easier to enforce. And a "reward" forum? Please, that's so superficial, and on the internet (lol how lame).
In other words, I don't think we need people getting big egos because they're "special".

Thats Right, we've decided to overhaul the Modding & Banning System.
Jess & I have worked through all the kinks and have decided on this.
Foul Language - 1 Point
Flaming/Insulting Other People - 3 Points
Advertising - 3 Points
Mini-Modding - 5 Points
Posting more than 5 times in a row - 15 Points
First of all I found the idea rather strict, but that was only at the first sight. Anyway I think this will work better, but I still have some questions:
Why do foul language and flaming give so less points?
And I know these things are especially for posts, but I think some apply for the signature aswell ( like flaming) so my question, can you still advertise in your signature?
Thanks for the Mini-Modding points, I hope the will keep the people form minimodding.
And for the posting more then five times, I think the people who do that (and not by accident) must be punished harder..
Anyway just because I am curious, where do the people that talk about banned members, while knowing the people are banned belong. Oh and I mean those people who just talk about them, not the ones that say somehting like : "member y's bann is not fair". But the people that said: oh member x is banned he was allways so blablabla...
You guys wanted us to do our job...well now we are...AND THEN SOME.
I guess people are scared by this new system, ah we will get used to it, and for who can't get used to it, ah well....
AJ Flibble

Why do foul language and flaming give so less points?
My guess is is that lots of people swear fairly often, and swearing is a pretty minor thing on the internets. Swears also happen so often that it's kinda unfair to give too much penalty, especially as mini-modding IMO is worse and more of a problem..
I would also assume that advertising in sigs is allowed, but swearing not, since it would be in every post you make, and you'd get the infraction.
That's my thoughts anyway. I'm probably completely wrong but it's worth hazarding a try to see what the answers realy are.

talking about banned people is not allowed, if you point out that they are banned etc
but maybe I am wrong and you just got it since you didn't even realize that that person was a boy.
anyway he is not a member anymore since he is banned so talking about him will probably be forbidden..

So we are on a points system now...it is sorta like the DMV points system. I think it will be helpful because instead of just getting a warning, each poster can get a record of infractions.
By the way, what is pure trolling (if it hasn't been asked already)?

Basically a high percentage of your posts are just to annoy a person/group really bad and serve no other purpose. Nobody likes annoying people :(

No, you just get the usernote.
But you are more likely going to get points instead of a usernote now (unless you broke the sig rules).
Just a quick question, if you had 4 pics in your sig before this was made, then it got deleted by a mod, will you still get a point?
No, because you don't get points for sig rule breaking.
The sig punishment system is still the same.

I depends on the mods whether they give warnings first or not.
I only give warnings to new people (and sometimes for small rule breakings).
If you've been here for months, you should know what's allowed and what isn't.
Concerning getting your points back: Infractions will expire after a while so the points won't count anymore.
