View Full Version : How do your parents feel about manga?

I don't exactly recieve a weekly allowance with money, per se, but at the end of every week my mom takes me to the city for shopping. This is how I obtain most of my manga.

One day, we were in line, and I had two volumes that I wanted to purchase. My mom took them from me, and at times she looks at the volumes while standing in line. Not really flipping through them, but sometimes she reads the back cover. Now, my mom had never had any problems with buying me manga based on ratings. They could be T+, or M, she wouldn't have a problem with it. But that day, she happened to notice the Explicit Content label on the cover of one volume, and asked me to put it back. In the end, I did get it because I basically began explaining to her about the volume in line, and how the content wasn't really THAT explicit. XP

A few times, my mom has sworn to stop buying me manga because she doesn't consider them "books," but I found that this is a vague threat and never happens.

She has also given me a few speeches on the mature nature of manga, and how she worries it affects me. XD But this is probably common.

Anyways, what do your parents think of manga?

Well, my mom doesn't really care. Every time we go to a book store, I pick out a manga, show it to her, and she buys it after questioning," Is this what you really want?" (I don't get an allowance, either.) She really trusts me.

Well, once I tried to use my 2 new volumes of Death Note as an excuse as to why I couldn't attend my cousin's wedding...

My mother just shook her head in disappointment and likely felt very grateful for the fact that I didn't turn out to be twins (or triplets).

My dad doesn't take me shopping for them too often, but he thinks that manga isn't much more than an expensive comic book. On the other hand, my mom thinks it's perfectly fine. She liked manga when she was a kid. 8D

Hmmm...I don't really think my parents care all that much whether I like manga or not. My mum doesn't, at least. My dad seems to enjoy dissing my anime whenever the oppurtunity arises (look! Their mouths aren't moving in sync with the words LOL! >>), but I don't even think he know's I read manga. o_o Lol whatever. XD

well, my mom doesn't really care, because my bro read manga when he was younger, but my dad ALWAYS says when he picks me up from school,"do you still read them japanese comics?"and i'm allike,"what the heck? its MANGA!there is a difference!"my dad doesn't really approve of me reading them, but he still buys me them
>_> sometimes parents are ... just wierd,

My mom doesn't really care. Sure, all she really knows about them is that they read "backwards", but she's highly non-obtrusive about my interests(the lady doesn't even care that I'm still into Pokemon :p) since I have a good track record of not getting into the (very few) things she wouldn't approve of. Although the furthest she'll go in buying them for me is paying for my subscription to Shonen Jump and occassionally buying them for me when it's Christmas/my birthday/when she has money to spare and we just so happen to be in Barnes & Noble. So yeah, she's stingy but good about being non-judgemental.

As for my dad, he doesn't really care. He has asked me how to read manga before, and thinks that it is strange to read a book backwards.

But I will say this: if my parents found out the definition of yaoi, their perception of me would change drastically. =3

First off, I'll begin by saying that whenever I buy manga out in public, I usually do it with my own money, and my parents don't even bother looking at what I bought, which is how I aquired Negima.

That being said, my parents really don't care that I read manga. Since I buy it with my own money, and since I have so much money in the first place, they could care less. And, since I buy most of my manga online and do much of the process myself, I don't actually have to tell them which manga I'm buying. I just pay them the money I owe and that's all of their involvement.

My mom is basically neutral about it. She thinks it's interesting and listens when I talk about it, but doesn't read it or anything. She likes a couple of anime that my dad and I make her watch though. >D

My dad...he likes manga. He likes anime more, but sometimes he looks at manga when we're at the bookstore. I'm the REAL Japan nut in the family though.

Neither of my parents really care either way. I just say I want this volume or these volumes, and I either pay for them or get them on present-giving occasions. They rarely bother to look at what I'm getting very thoroughly, and that's why I have a lot of the manga I do.
I guess they're just happy I prefer to read books and manga and do physical activities rather than watch TV and eat junk food.

My parents don't give a darn about the manga I read, they let me read it no matter what the content is, or what the rating is.

They let me purchase some off the internet when they no NOTHING about the content of the book, and my Dad even bought a volume of InuYasha that was rated Teen for my little sister, when she was six years old.
The same goes for TV shows too, my sister and I have been allowed to watch things like Family Guy and South Park since I was nine, and she was four.

Well, it's my money so I buy what I want.

But in my brown family they don't know anything about manga. A book is a book to them. If it has words, it's worth reading.

Cause in my family I have to become "a doctor or engineer"............yahh.

It seems like my parents don't care what I but, I mean, my dad bought me Death Note because he heard it was good, and we both enjoy it. But he banned me from watching Shaman King when it premired, and almost didn't let me watch Yugioh because Yugi was 'possesed' o_o Sooo, whatever....(Maybe it was because I was younger?)

I dunno what my parent's feelings on Negima would be. But I read it.

my dad doesnt care. He's from africa, and was an otaku when he was a kid, so when nostalgia calls, he borrows a shonen jump or a golgo 13. my mom is all like" Why don't you buy AMERICAN comics, like batman. the japanese got the idea from us. just like that wierd music you listen to (Is refering to J-rock)" and i just give her a stare that makes her know that i know that she doesn't know WHAT she's talking about. My parents don't disapprove of manga. While my father doesn't really care for it as well as anime (he just isn't interested into animation and cartooning at all, with a few exceptions like Futurama and The Boondocks comic strip), my mother actually shows something of an interest in manga. In fact, she's going to read a one-shot tonight before going to sleep (the timing of me replying is rather ironic), so I'll see what she thinks in the morning.

Interesting to note, though, I was able to get my aunt to read the first nine volumes of Berserk, and the first volume of Eden: It's an Endless World!, in that order. She enjoyed both, surprisingly enough.

Well, once I tried to use my 2 new volumes of Death Note as an excuse as to why I couldn't attend my cousin's wedding...

My mother just shook her head in disappointment and likely felt very grateful for the fact that I didn't turn out to be twins (or triplets).

No offence, but I'd have to side with your mother on that one. I mean, we can't put aside manga for family now? Seriously?

but my dad ALWAYS says when he picks me up from school,"do you still read them japanese comics?"and i'm allike,"what the heck? its MANGA!there is a difference!"

Uh, no, there isn't a difference. Manga are essentially Japanese comics. Deal.

My parents took my anime and manga away for a month once, lol. They HATE it. They think I'm wasting my life on it. xD Of course, I'm grown now, and I can do what I want. I may be wasting my life on the stuff, but I'm not exactly throwing my life away either. :p I know where my priorities lie. I just spend all my at home free time reading manga (and playing online). Is that so wrong?!

*Note that at home free time doesn't include hang out with friends time, lol*

My father never cared about my anime/manga hobby at all.

My mother, however, has always had a problem with it. Because I'm a girl, she feels that comics are not suitable for me. Plus, she thinks I'm too old for them... Yeah, she considers them 'cartoons'. Though, this one time, she freaked out at me watching this one Hellsing episode because of all the blood. XD;; I guess it also doesn't help that she's religious.

It's all moot nowadays, since I'm over eighteen and on my own.

My mother is the parent that has the most problems with it out of the two. Once, while we were driving downtown (to Borders, in fact) she suddenly began a lecture on how she fears manga/anime is affecting my life, and how it is "innapropriate."

Although I have explained to her on numerous occasions how manga/anime is different than cartoons/comics, she still complains at times.

In the end, she's fine with it, though. At times, she has even expressed mild curiousity (in a positive way.) My dad, however, is confused by the format.

Ah, what naive parents. =3

I can't bear to get them at the library. I have this part of me that says: "YOU MUST BUY THEM OR DIE," and I go by that. I also do not like waiting for the volumes that I need to come in so that I may check them out.

My library doesn't have that large of a collection, so I find it easier to purchase the series I need.

I think they are glad I actually spend my money on something other then art commissions, so they don't really complain if I do buy manga.

Though, when I was watching DBZ before, my dad thought Cell's nose was a carrot. So yeah |D I keep my parents far from the anime genre. They aren't too interested in my manga or anime that much anyway, it's too "childish" for them.

As a parent, I don't get too uptight about anime as long as it's age appropriate for my son. I appreciate the art form because some of it is spectacular. Some of it is too violent and "out there" for my personal tastes, but I'm sure my parents felt the same about what I was into when I was in my tweens and teens.

Well, my parents think that it's making me act too subserviant... And it might be, a LITTLE, but with all the strong Female characters in it, it's really only two of my (finished) Manga that would influence me so. My dad refers to them as "Those backwards books", but otherwise they don't really care. Got four or fve volumes for Jesusmas this week. However, they constantly pick on me for still liking Pokémon. Incident today: I was downtown with my mom in one of our regular bookshop browsing days, and had quite a lot of money to spend because of Christmas (about $50). We were in one bookstore, and I was just about ready to head over to the manga section, when my mom stops me and informs me that I am only allowed to spend half of my money on manga.

Now, I understood that my mom hates spending any kind of money -- no matter how it's earned -- all at once. But the fact remained: It was still my money, and I should have had the privilege to do what I wanted with it.

So, we go to another bookstore (Borders) and I waltz on over to the manga section and notice that they have a buy four, get one free deal. I inform my mom of this, and she reluctantly agrees. I end up spending about $40 of my own money.

When we exit the store, my mom begins to lecture me about how I shouldn't be spending all my money on manga, and I once again remind her that it is my money. This entire debate ends when she concludes that I'm not to buy any more manga for a month.

These types of things are quite common with my mom, so I don't take it very seriously. But that's just one way to describe how she feels about it. Though her feelings do change from mild interest to outright denial of me spending my money on it.

What can I say; parents are peculiar.

Well, at least my mom doesn't do that. Sorta.

She doesn't care what I do with my money at all, although she usually dislikes that most of the things I spend my money on are videogame-related things. Otherwise, she leaves me alone (and this is because she never gives me money to begin with).

Luckily, I have a job, so I don't have to worry about going to the bookstore and having someone buy it for me like I used to. Then again, 99% of the time I'm buying my manga online.

Kinda glad I have a job too. When I was younger, my mom really never bought me anything specifically for me except clothes to wear, so my birthday and Christmas presents usually consisted of clothes with only one thing I REALLY wanted being from my Dad.

Onto the manga:

My parents don't care. My mom is sometimes intrigued, but doesn't really pay attention most of the time.
Even when I read yaoi, she doesn't really care (she doesn't know what yaoi means, but when she sees the front she usually would know the content).

She doesn't hate gay people anyway, so she could care less (I'm glad I have a mom who's like that! ^_^).

Same with my dad.

So yeah, I get away with buying yaoi doujins ALL THE TIME. My parents simply don't mind, and I'm at least happy for that.
Then again, I'm 17, so I SHOULD have that freedom when I'm nearly an adult already.

I am lucky!! I got loads C-Mas money, and bought a record 10 GNs in one week!! And started two new series, Beauty Pop and Full Moon O Sagashite. My parents often advise me that I shouldn't spend all my money on GNs, but they let me buy them.

...But what really bugs me is that THEY WON'T LET ME BE IN THE ANIME CLUB AT SCHOOL!!!! I want to be in this club very much. I really need more friends that like anime!! I have like, one. Um, they think I am more mean-spirited because of anime over the past few years. But I think it's because I am a teenager and teens can be more rebellious as they grow older!! I am really not a mean person, even though I just said that. The Gamers/Anime club only had 1 meeting so far. I showed up just to tell everybody that I couldn't come. They think manga is addictive (which it is) and a negative influence. I am so suprised that so many on this thread have parents that don't care!! I am going to make my parents read some manga to see that it's not all bad. I don't even read manga for "older teens" (16+), or yaoi (I hate it) or anything, but I just want to be in the club at school. If you think I am obsesing over this club way too much... I'm actually not.

So... parents are peculiar. I own 60+ GNs, but I can't join a club at school. (Probably because they don't want to take everything having to do with manga/anime away from me, because they know it makes me happy. How nice of them.) And they tell me they want me to make new friends. (I am at a new school this year. No, really- the school itself is brand new.)

In conclusion, my parents think that anime is okay... if it is limited.

Can someone help me?!?!?!

My parents are pretty much neutral on the issue of manga, but it's just that my mom sometimes gets irritated from spending money on it. Otherwise, I buy manga every week.

I personally would love it if my parents actually read one of my manga series. I suggested Death Note to my mom once, but since then I haven't had the courage to give volume one to her due to the fact that Death Note basically involves a guy killing people. A lot of people. But then again, my mom loves mystery/suspense. And Death Note suits that genre.

Other than that, I wouldn't dare show my parents the contents of most of my manga. I don't read anything below the T rating, so some of my series (well, almost all) contain things my parents wouldn't approve of on second glance. Like yaoi.

One day, my mom came into my room searching for something, then paused briefly to look at my manga shelf. She stared at it for a while, then exclaimed "LEGAL DRUG?"

Me: "Yes. Legal drug is also defined as medicine."

For those of you who have read that series, I couldn't tell her the truth, now could I? =P

And if you hate yaoi, you have no idea what you're missing. :)

Mom- She doesn't really care, but she says they're too expensive. That might be the reason that I basically have only one. o.O Sometimes she reads/skims through them (Once she looked through Pita Ten because she said that if it was good, she might buy more and another through Fruits Basket because she said she saw something weird.) Yeah. She knows that it goes backwards, though.

Dad- "You shouldn't waste your time reading those comic books." One of those 'be a doctor or dentist' type of fathers. He doesn't know anything about them anyhow.

Most of the time, I read online. xD

My mom is the only one who pays attention to that. As long as there is no nudity, homosexuals, people wearing very immodest clothing, Satanists, God-haters, major swears, sexual content, or anything else that's innappropriate for my age, I can read it. So that means no teen mangas until I'm older. And I'm thirteen. -_-

I highly discourage anyone to let their parents randomly flip through manga. But then again, it depends on the overall acceptance your parents have towards it. Oh, and update of sorts: I introduced a bunch of short manga anthologies and one-shots to my mom. She's enjoyed them all so far, and even asks me questions to clarify about certain plot points and characters.

The manga that my mom has read so far:

Abandon the Old in Tokyo
Blue
Dolis
The Push Man and Other Stories
Short Program
Short Program 2
Smuggler
The Walking Man
Who Fighter with Heart of Darkness

Out of all of those I think she liked Blue and Dolis the most. And right now she's reading Sexy Voice and Robo, three or four chapters in, and she states that she "likes the art."

She's also shown apparent interest in:

Emma
Monster
Planetes

I think that's pretty damn awesome considering that she never heard let alone read manga before I started collecting it, and that she's getting into some of the best stuff available in English.

I've been considering finally taking that huge leap and presenting my parents with manga to read - preferably a series that's as good as those you mentioned. But then again, I am paranoid that they'll take one good look at it, flip through a few pages, and say "THIS STUFF IZ TOOO VILENT!!!11!! I KNEW IT!!1!!! NO MANGA FER U!!1!!!" Get some good drama like Blue or Dolis. Admittedly there's nudity in the latter, but nothing along the lines of fanservice as it's more for artistic purposes. There's also a bit of blood, but there's also reason in that concerning characterization (the leading female is... well, "insane," for a lack of a better term).

Then of course she made me tell my mom and I ended up laughing at their looks of horror for the rest of the night. You are a brave, brave soul.

If I had ever been presented with the option of actually informing my parents of the definition of shounen-ai/yaoi, not only would my manga be confiscated, but I wouldn't be able to purchase them anymore. Every time I visit Borders and want shounen-ai/yaoi, I have to keep my mother distracted so that she doesn't glance down at the volume. (in spanish and on top of that she mispronounses it, she pronounses it like this, Nar-00-To) and my dad don't care but then again as long as it's not porn or something like that he's gennerally ok with it, not a total fan of it, but just ok with it, he can live with me reading it and watching it, but yeah, as long as it's not like fillid with nudity, or exssesive swearing it's ok with them

My mum has no problems with manga or anime. She'll occasionally buy me a volume I need, and she'll sit and watch NGE when I'm watching it.

My parents could care less. My mom or grandma is willing to buy baisically any manga. My dad actually watches some with me. I thought when I first got into it my mom (who is usually very protective about what I see) was going to not let me get some of the series, but she didn't care. I remember picking out Sensual Phrase and I thoguht she was instantly going to say put that back but she looked at the back and saw that it was rated M and didn't care. Same thing with NANA and Butterflies, Flowers. My Dad could care less about the content. I watched Strawberry (Ichigo) 100%, Ai Yori Aoshi, and Chobits with him and he didn't care. He even read the Chobits manga ans skimmed through the Ai Yori Aoshi manga (including the 17th volume). So baisically, they let me spend as much money as I want on it (just as long as it's not an outrageous amount like $100) and don't care what it is.

Sounds like typical closed minded adults... Anime is here to stay and Japan doesn't have a stupid crap at all, just because you don't like or understand it, doesn't mean it is stupid. I really can't stand some of the older generations, since they seem to be more anti-anime than the younger people who grew up with it.

As for me, my parents don;t really understand it that much and think it's perfectly fine for me to watch or read when I was younger, though I'm 23 now and won;t matter now what they say :D I'm slowly getting my step-dad into anime and he seems to like Trigun and my mom seems to like Hell Girl, what a combo.

Well, neither mom nor Patrick really seem to care that I'm into manga... They both know and they both usually get me volumes for my birthday as a result. None of the ones I'm into are particularly explicit, though... I wonder how they'd react if they were?

I think Patrick would like manga, though, since he's into graphic novels. (Which I also borrow and read sometimes~)

The only time my parents have ever been mad about reading manga was when my little sister told my mom about the YOTSUBA&! chapter about the Bon Festival, when the spirits of ancestors return to the earth. My mom got so mad to the point that she was threatening to burn the manga volume. She never did, and I don't think she cares much since I still read YOTSUBA&! books. If anything, the only thing they don't like about manga is how expensive they are...
