View Full Version : Is YouTube going downhill?

Metal Bird
19th January 2008, 6:39 AM
To me, I think so. When I first discovered YouTube back in September 2006, I recalled that whenever I tried going to Serbii.net, it kept redirecting me to that one YouTube video that shows the singing Pokemon kid dressed up as Ash Ketchum. Remeber that video?

I was originaly here for some random viral videos, and then I found some old Pokemon episodes that I haven't seen in awhile, and then I found some more interesting Pokemon-related stuff. Today, I now like to watch old TV videos and promos of my favorite cable channels.

What really sucks about YouTube is that:

1. You can't download from their website and on to your computer's hard drive.
2. Some videos are removed because of Copyright Infregement issues (sorry for my spelling), or because of other certain violations.
3. Once when you have your own YouTube account, you can only save less than 500 videos.
4. Whenever you upload a video, there is a certain restriction that you can only upload videos that have less than 100 MB.
5. Whenever you search for a certain name, sometimes you will get mixed content. For example, whenever I type in "Pokemon" in the search box, it would be mixed with unwanted content (like Naruto, Jerry Springer, Spongebob Squarepants, pornagrafy, etc.)
6. You can only type in 500 cariters or less in the comments section (once again, sorry for my spelling).
7. You only have less than 48 hours in order to reach up to 20,000 viewers or more in order to appear in the "featured videos" section in the main page. Most of my videos have failed to reach up to that amount of viewers in such a short period of time.
8. YouTube usally uses Adobe's Flash media feature, and you're required to use that feature in order to view videos.
9. Due to the Flash media, there's no closed captioning avaible. How will the hearing impared know whenever he or she is watching a video?
10. It makes it difficult to type in your username and password. And speaking of usernames, here's my YouTube user channel. (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=gvk9r)

I know, the reason why my user name is "gvk9r" is because I didn't know how to type in my username at the time. I just wish you could change it. It was so hard for me to regester at the time.

Inspired by what I typed last summer about why cable TV sucks these days here on Serebiifourms, I just wanted to record some classic episodes of Pokemon (pre-Advanced) and Dexter's Laboratory (two of my all-time favorite TV shows). Since 2004, I had kept looking for those two shows that I like on Cartoon Network, but every time, my hopes would be shattered, and I didn't know how to program a VCR until when I was 15 (which was back in 2005). I know, pretty late, don't you think?

Luckly, I now have volumes one and two of the first season of Pokemon, as well as volumes one and two of the fifth season of Pokemon (Pokemon Master Quest). I just need seasons 2, 3, 4, and the Pokemon Chronicals. I also wish Cartoon Network would release the entire Dexter's Laboratory series on DVD.

Lets face it, Ted Turner is drunk, and so are those YouTube nerds! They are removing inportant pieces of television history, and you know how much I love television!

So, what do you think about YouTube?

YouTube sucks. The amount of crappy videos people post that they made themselves is almost as bad a collection of MistyLover's threads.

Why do you think youtube became famous?

Most of your "arguments" sound like whining moreso than anything else. I mean, are you really trying to argue that companies shouldn't protect their intellectual properties from copyright infringement by way of illegal media copies? And if your videos don't get enough hits to be a "Featured Video", who cares, why does it matter and maybe that means the videos you put up aren't that good to begin with?

Sorry, but you don't make a single valid point in your entire post; every "point" you list as being a detriment can be logically refuted any number of ways.

What really sucks about YouTube is that:

1. You can't download from their website and on to your computer's hard drive.
Unless you're using Firefox, in which case there is an add-on that allows you to do so.

2. Some videos are removed because of Copyright Infregement issues (sorry for my spelling), or because of other certain violations.
But that doesn't stop other people from continually adding more.

3. Once when you have your own YouTube account, you can only save less than 500 videos.
That's an awful lot of videos you know.

4. Whenever you upload a video, there is a certain restriction that you can only upload videos that have less than 100 MB.
That is unless you have Director's account. At which point you can upload a full length movie.

5. Whenever you search for a certain name, sometimes you will get mixed content. For example, whenever I type in "Pokemon" in the search box, it would be mixed with unwanted content (like Naruto, Jerry Springer, Spongebob Squarepants, pornagrafy, etc.)
That's a given, just search for what you're looking for. It helps to look at the tags under to video to know why you got those.

6. You can only type in 500 cariters or less in the comments section (once again, sorry for my spelling).
That's what the clubs/message boards are for.

7. You only have less than 48 hours in order to reach up to 20,000 viewers or more in order to appear in the "featured videos" section in the main page. Most of my videos have failed to reach up to that amount of viewers in such a short period of time.
And that's a problem how?

8. YouTube usally uses Adobe's Flash media feature, and you're required to use that feature in order to view videos.
Most people are using that anyways.

9. Due to the Flash media, there's no closed captioning avaible. How will the hearing impared know whenever he or she is watching a video?
You do realize that most videos on YouTube have been made using Windows Movie Maker. That's usually how we get subs in some cases. So captioning is no different. YouTube just converts it to .flv. You actually need to have the video in MPEG-4 format.

10. It makes it difficult to type in your username and password. And speaking of usernames, here's my YouTube user channel. (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=gvk9r)
You lost me there.

I know, the reason why my user name is "gvk9r" is because I didn't know how to type in my username at the time. I just wish you could change it. It was so hard for me to regester at the time.
You can change it you know. Just like with your password.

Some comments in bold.

Honestly, I haven't visited YouTube in the last month or so. I have an account there and I've been posting a few episodes. I'm a little late, as I've got some catching up to do, but other than that I'm able to post some videos. Personally, I didn't like it either when they were removing videos, but this only started once Google got a hold of it. So, really blame Google for this uptight security.

This thread demonstrates how much of a crybaby the OP is.

Nobody cares that you have a **** browser, with no flash, no respect for copyright holders, want to make obnoxiously long posts that nobody gives two shits about, whine that nobody watches your videos, are probably deaf, and cannot spell pornography

What really sucks about YouTube is that:

1. You can't download from their website and on to your computer's hard drive.
There's ways around it. But the whole reason is to prevent people from stealing other people's videos and uploading them elsewhere. Granted, there's ways around it, but that's the whole reasoning behind it.

2. Some videos are removed because of Copyright Infregement issues (sorry for my spelling), or because of other certain violations.
And your point being? If you don't own the copyrights, you're prone to having your video removed or your account banned. When signing up to YouTube, you agreed NOT to upload any unless you owned it, yourself. Going against this is not the fault of YouTube, but the user who chose to go against the ToS.

3. Once when you have your own YouTube account, you can only save less than 500 videos.
ONOZ!

4. Whenever you upload a video, there is a certain restriction that you can only upload videos that have less than 100 MB.
Again, copyrights and what not. Most recorded and encoded TV shows are generally around 100MB. It's to prevent people from uploading full TV shows and movies. Not to mention, it's THEIR server you're trying to host crap on. You're not the only one who's uploading movies.

5. Whenever you search for a certain name, sometimes you will get mixed content. For example, whenever I type in "Pokemon" in the search box, it would be mixed with unwanted content (like Naruto, Jerry Springer, Spongebob Squarepants, pornagrafy, etc.)
The fault of users, not YouTube. Do that with just about ANY web search feature. Users will tend to throw in keywords into their "About This Video" and "Keywords" section to draw in more people to view their videos.

6. You can only type in 500 cariters or less in the comments section (once again, sorry for my spelling).
It's a comment, not an essay. The only thing I think should be changed is a feature added that allows you to see how many characters you have left to type up a comment.

7. You only have less than 48 hours in order to reach up to 20,000 viewers or more in order to appear in the "featured videos" section in the main page. Most of my videos have failed to reach up to that amount of viewers in such a short period of time.
Boo hoo. None of my videos ever have, yet they draw in a very large audience. Here's an idea: Make videos that don't suck. If you make videos no one's interested in, you won't get many views. It helps to be creative, too. No one really cares about AMVs.

8. YouTube usally uses Adobe's Flash media feature, and you're required to use that feature in order to view videos.
Most video websites with video use this.

9. Due to the Flash media, there's no closed captioning avaible. How will the hearing impared know whenever he or she is watching a video?
Not the fault of YouTube. Why would there be close captioning for COMMUNITY MADE VIDEOS? You're confusing YouTube with television. They're NOT the same.

10. It makes it difficult to type in your username and password.[/LIST]And speaking of usernames, here's my YouTube user channel. (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=gvk9r)
No it doesn't.

I know, the reason why my user name is "gvk9r" is because I didn't know how to type in my username at the time. I just wish you could change it. It was so hard for me to regester at the time.

YouTube isn't intended to be website where you watch TV shows and what not. The original intention was for people to MAKE VIDEOS. To support millions of people uploading videos around the clock, obviously the quality cannot be at the highest point.

They've basically become sell-outs, it's a place for every big company to advertise now.
This guy hit the nail on the head. When YouTube was sold to Google and started attracting regular people rather than 'internet nerds' it lost any resemblance to the site it used to be. Because of its recognition in the mainstream media the site has been overtaken by companies who use underhand tactics to push their videos up the charts.

Now that big television companies are aware of its existence copyright claims are increasingly quick, I know that this is a legal right of the company but it is still annoying. When YouTube was more underground I only really used it to watch clips of proper television shows rather than the majority of rubbish uploaded on there.

So I agree with the OP's sentiment, even if I think the most of his criticisms are unfounded.

The ONLY problem I've noticed really since Google bought YouTube was how absolutely useless the Director status became. Before, you had to apply to be a Director. If you got it, you could host videos more than 10 minutes long.

However, that soon changed and the status became nothing more than a title. None of the titles have ANY benefits anymore. Unless you already had videos past the 10 minute mark uploaded, you can never do so.

The Partnership Program sounds nice...in theory. All you're basically doing is making videos and allowing them to put ads around and on your video. You make a little pocket change for your views and people who click the ads...but really, who actually clicks the ads?

No thanks.

YouTube is one of the many horrid cesspools of the Internet (see also: various blogging communities) that occasionally have worthwhile gems, but is otherwise plain trash.

SOS! Its Not Healthy..

Sometimes I wonder how some people could pass up upon copyright infringement, there are certain companies are infringe more than others. (meaning take down videos more then others) Obviously more the prime TV or very well known shows are taken down, but there is always someone who gets away from it.

Youtube does provide some cool videos, I go on there to find some stuff I missed or thinking about, but all those rules from the first post is self explanatory, its been like that since I could remember

I recently installed, and then uninstalled a program that claims that you can download the videos off of YouTube. In fact, I found two programs, but it turned out that I was unable to download since there's always errors!

The first program that I used: FreeCorder, it fails!

The second program: Piggy Video, it fails too!

To make matters worse, both programs were also really cheap free trial versions. In order to get the full version (which I don't even it still works), you have to purchase it on their website, go through so many confusing and complex signings, waste a good $29.00 or so, wait for 2-4 weeks, install it, and then suddenly, it fails! I don't even think they accept refunds or any money-back garentees! Damn online scams! At least I didn't waste my money! Plus that last program that I tried using (Piggy Video), the devlopers came all the way from the U.K.

Reasons That I Use YouTube Instead Of Killing Myself For Watching Tat
1 - Music. I'd never have heard Starchild - Wintersun or various oher such gems if it hadn't been for YouTube.
2 - Yugioh Abridged Series - It exercises my humour gland, nuff said.
3 - Ummmm.....hmmmm....err...I dunno. Something.

Reasons YouTube Is Bad In My Opinion
1 - SPAM!!! Srsly, I don't CARE if you say that a faceless girl will appear at my bed and kill me at midnight, I don't CARE that you say my mum will die in 5 hours, etc., etc. JUST STOP SPAMMING, PEOPLE!
2 - Retarded 10-year-olds, homophobics, maieusophiliacs, etc. The same reason Runescape has noobs. And yes, Freddy Mercury WAS bi, don't spam Queen vids. And just because you've been cursed with the same shameful fetish that I have, doesn't mean I have to like you.
3 - Other stuff...
End of rant. You have now learned m opinions on YouTube, and that I am a maieusophiliac. G'bye, mateys.

I don't know if this has been said already.
I think Youtube is going downhill is because I found a bunch of porn on there a few days ago. Apparently it won't be taken down because it's "educational".
Here is a tip for Youtube, naked people doing thing is not sutable whether it's educational or not. And putting up that "verify your age" thing is really going to stop little kids from looking at it.
I can just imagine. A kid is looking up schoolwork on there and sees the little "we also recommend this" on the right of the page. He goes to it just as his mother comes by.

The United States? (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=299061)

YouTube is one of the many horrid cesspools of the Internet (see also: various blogging communities) that occasionally have worthwhile gems, but is otherwise plain trash.
TBT, I personally dislike America due to it's absurd policies. And because they have fights that make no sense whatsoever.

I know I just posted on the first page, but I only watch Youtube now if there are any good Video Game walkthroughs (which is now my reasoning for it). In fact, I found a pretty decent one of Portal. The quality was pretty good, and not to mention added commentary. Other than that, there ain't a whole to watch. Dailymotion is beginning to be better.

I think youtube is worse then it was before because you can't upload longer vids, however I think it is still an okay website and one of the best video sites.

Youtube was never that good butit got worse when google took over and its pretty hard to find tv shows on there now i rarely go on there anymore i cant find what i want use some better sites like www.megavideo.com or Myspace tv or www.livevideo.com best video sites ever :)
You weren't supposed to be watching TV shows on YouTube to begin with, you 'tard.

It's good to watch vids of videogames, but there is a lot of crap there. I was watching a Guitar Hero 3 vid, and a related video was called "BIG BREAST BOUNCE".

Not necessarily what I want to see.

Nothing I can think of that is actually YouTube's fault and not the users.

But one thing on the users is when you want to watch something like a tv show that is off the air and not on dvd, so it's not really watchable other than uploads on the internet.
Two things that the statement is there for:
1. When you are in the situation above and suddenly you find the thing you want to watch then you find out it's got music playing over the show, no dialogue just music.
2. Whenever you search a topic it seems everything is AMV there's nothing because of the copyright proble, I don't blame youtube for that but you'd think people would be able to make something other than AMVs.

Okay I'm done :)

There's an add-on for Firefox that lets you download Youtube Videos that never fails AND is free.

It's called DownloadHelper.

Ever since it merged with Google or whatever, bleh, yeah, none to fond of it. *Shakes head* Especially at all the unnecessarily deletions and suspensions and everything.

Especially at all the unnecessarily deletions and suspensions and everything.

$10 says most of the deletions you label "unnecessarily" [sic] was material that had no business being on YouTube in the first place by way of either clear and defined copyright violations or just plain vulgar and worthless material.

Ashkihyena

Or they could've been parodies that used that material. As I said, the merge with Google was unnecessary and only made it worse.

But I do like Youtube, still, because it has Pokemon Movie 10. *laughs*

The entire merge with Google was a bad idea for YouTube, at least from my point of view. The pornagraphy advertisements and comments that lower your I.Q. at least 5 points per read were always there, and always will be. YouTube is the gathering place of the internet, and can be more idiotic than Gaia Online at times. Really, people look up and watch videos about things they hate, just to spam and flame about them.
(Of course, the same can be applied to some of the threads here, too.)

YOutube is going downhill for two reasons.

One: they post the most rediculous things on Youtube.

Two: No porn. Only joking! Or am I?
