Out of all the gym battles Ash has ever been in, this is my top favorite. It was definitely one of the more difficult battles he's been in, considering he hadn't fought many ghost pokemon, and he really used his quick thinking and smarts to win. The best part is that he used Cyndaquil to beat gastly, which was a surprise. Hey, it worked, so kudos for him. He also did great with Noctowl.

Team Rocket were also pretty good in this episode. I like how the ghost pokemon tricked them, it was pretty funny. :D

The one bad thing about this episode was the fact that they used S*ittastic animation for it, just like the Roxanne Gym Battle episode. I mean, seriously. They give the great animation episodes to a frikking filler with PICHU, and then give this episode to the crappy animation team. >.>

I liked the part when Cyndaquil ran up gastly's tongue and headbutted him.

Looked like somethin outta DBZ.

A very exciting and intense gym battle I throughly enjoyed it, congrats to Ash for winning a Fog Badge. Considering Ash hasn't had many battles against Ghost Pokemon he did pretty good holding his own and puling a come from behind victory.

The battle was very well done, and Ash really used his head for once.

I liked how he actually thought to use foresight, and how Cyndquil ran up Gastly's tongue.

Although I think Gengar was way too shafted in favour of Gastly, couldn't he have put up a bit more of a fight... Still an excellent gym battle.

This was definitely one of the best gym battles ever.
...Even though it bothered me how easily Pikachu lost; that thing should have been a really high level. D:<

Plus, Matsuba is one of the best gym leaders ever, IMO. :'D

Kudos for Ash's Noctowl, because it learned Confusion in the battle! I love how the group of Gastly seemed to foil Team Rocket's scheme. And Morty too, he's so kind.

One thing irked me about this episode, and that was the way they portrayed Mean Look. Apparently Mean Look makes Pokemon unable to switch only because Brock says so. Why couldn't they have shown Haunter manipulating the Pokemon away from the Poke Ball's beams or something? At least they made good use of Foresight.

I must admit, this was actually a forgettable episode. I love Ecruteak City itself, but I completely forgot that Ash had a Gym Match here. So I had to read the episode guide.

And what do I see? Not too much. Pretty much the only noteworthy aspect of the episode was Ash actually using strategy, ie: using Foresight properly.

At least he didn't have to have a rematch, that's all I can say .-.

I agree it was pretty forgetable.
I was very dissapointed, I expected a much more intense battle. -.-

I agree that the battle wasn't as good as it could have been, but how can you forget where a gym is?

Sadly, this was Noctowl's only major battle in the entire series.

Kinda sad and pathetic, but most of Ash's Johto Pokemon were handled badly so that's just how it was back then.

The writers really screwed up Ash's Johto team so badly, at least Phanpy was salvaged when they brought it back for Battle Frontier, and Heracross is a good reserve as well.

Ash's Johto starters + Noctowl got the absolute worst treatment of all his teams.

I wish noctowl had gotten to battle more, but at least he got to fight in this one, one of ash's coolest battles

Poor Noctowl. It was one of it's few major battles. And of course Ash just had to Pikachu again >_>

I expected a much better fight out of Gengar. It seemed to me that Gastly was Morty's best pokemon. I am glad Ash used Noctowl, as this has been its only major battle so far. I thought Ash's strategy of using Confusion through the whole room was a little obvious. I would have thought he would have done that no matter what, that way it would be unavoidable. Either way, I am glad Ash managed to win.

The gym battle was very intense!! That Cyndaquil should of burned Gastly tongue... 7/10

Great gym battle. Ash usually doesn't lose pokemon so quickly, but this time it was different.
Morty's Gengar was pretty weak, it wasn't a challenge for Noctowl. Gastly was strong, maybe even the strongest of Morty's pokemon.

How ridiculous. Ash's Johto team was so weak yet he managed to still beat Morty who is probably the most difficult Gym Leader to defeat.

Not a good battle, it was too easy. 3/10

Quite a good episode. It was funny seeing Team Rocket seeing an illusion of all that food created by those Gastly. One thing confused me about this episode? I thought Normal type attacks don't work against Ghost types but in this episode, Ash has his pokemon use Tackle.

Willow's Tara

CK- That's because Noctowl used Foresight and all of his Pokemon were able to use normal attack against that Ghost Pokemon that foresight was used against.

I thought this was a good match, I gotta agree Gastly seemed alot stronger then Gengar. But don't forget Noctowl learned Confusion while battling Gengar and since psychic moves are effective against Ghost then it was probably why Gengar didn't last, while there were no strong effective moves against the other two (Unless you count tackle but Haunter/Gastly kept dodging)

Ash's Johto Team isn't that weak. But maybe it would have been better if Ash lost to Morty instead of Whitney.(can't stand the cow)
I then wouldn't mind seeing the second match.

My absolute favorite Johto gym battle! It was great seeing Noctowl learn confusion, double effective on Ghost/Poison types! The tricks played on TR were hilarious! It was cool when Cyndaquil ran up Haunter's tongue to use tackle.

97/100

Great battle! It was nice to see Noctowl getting screen time in a gym battle and winning as well! I liked Noctowl's ability to see "hidden/invisible" ghosts. It was used well here and Ash got a nice win and a nice badge. This episode is good, 9/10.

Probably one of those gym battles that are in essence, great and really awesome to watch, but forgettable too. I loved how Noctowl had the spotlight and learned Confusion during the match. Noctowl is probably one of Ash's strongest flying Pokémon and this episode validated just that.

I really liked this battle. It made me like Noctowl so much more. I wish Noctowl had learned Psychic instead of Confusion. I wonder if Noctowl could learn Psychic TM back in G/S/C?

I liked seeing Noctowl use its Foresight to make the Ghost-type Pokemon visible and how it learned Confusion during the battle. I would have liked it if the Noctowl vs Gengar match had lasted longer though, since it felt too short to me. I also thought that Gastly was in battle for what seemed like forever, and I did not expect Ash to have to use all three of his Pokemon to take it out. However, I did like how Cyndaquil ran up Gastly's tongue, that was great. :p

My favourite part of the episode would have to be when Team Rocket was being hypnotized by those Gastly.

I re-watched this episode yesterday, and I think I may have been too hard on Ash before. Looking back, he did fairly well against Morty even if Noctowl learning Confusion when it battled against Haunter seemed too convenient. Unlike most people, I didn't care much for the Gengar portion of the battle. I thought the species was a bit overexposed in the past so I wasn't exactly interested in seeing it demonstrate its powers again. I loved that Gastly got some screen-time though and that it managed to beat Pikachu, even if it seemed too easy. I loved how it used Lick like a whip against Noctowl as well. I even liked Team Rocket's parts of the episode since they were funny.

I was hoping the battle against Gengar would have been longer. It was Morty's strongest 'mon, it should have posed more of a challenge than that.
Still an awesome battle, though. :)
