this dub title is ok but it is so obvious because -gulpin it down- is a pun on
-gulping it down- this ep looks strange because how do treeco and gulpin get big in the first place? ;252;

Does anyone else think that this episode would have rocked even more if it took place AFTER the grovyle evolution?

a 50 feet grovyle in battle would have been VERY cool.

No, I think this was a perfect time to battle as a Treecko trying hard to beat Gulpin it was good I think losing or something could have shooken up Treecko's head and made it even more determined to get Stronger then the next episode yeah.

Actually, I believe this Episode was originally aired during a Japanese Monster Week. It's Godzilla roots cannot be denied.

I'll be quite interested in what Gulpin's voice will sound like.

What are you talking about? His Original name was Professor Shakuji. Sounds to me like they had a little fun with it this time.

Gulpin goes "Gulp, Gulp" and it also does a hillarious belching noise! I am pretty sure it is a dub voice. However, Meganium, Tangela, and Parasect keep their original voice. Professor Jaccuzi sounded like Professor Westwood. They kept a few pieces of original music, including the music that played when Jaccuzi was launching the Gulpin out of cannons, I have never heard that music in the dub. I am pretty sure it was from one of the first three movies.

I wanna hear what Ash's Grovyle sounds like! I hope they make it sound tougher then the one from "WYSIWYG"

Today's ep was a tad above average, but it had some really good parts.

Other than Gulpin's debut, we got to see the long and forgotten Tangela again. :p Tangela is definitely one of the Kanto pokemon that rarely ever appears, so I'm glad it got more screentime.

Giant Treecko and Gulpin were amusing, and I liked the fact that they caught Gulpin with the Heavy Ball. It would have been a good idea if Brock gave that Heavy Ball to Joy, since he never used his, but I guess not.

There was also some classic Pokemon battle music played during this episode.

It also looks like Joy and Jenny have their new voices, but whoever is doing them does a good job imitating the old Joy/Jenny VA.

Here's hoping Veronica Taylor, Eric Stuart, Rachael Lilis, etc. never leave 4kids.

Hehe, I agree, zonic, that noise rocked!
Well, I was quite surprised at this episode. Really bringing back the forgotten, aren't we? Meganium, rarely seen. Tangela, next to never seen. Parasect, about 200 some episodes ago if I remember correctly. Heavy Ball, quite forgotten. I always liked the Apricorn balls....Plus, I distinctly recognized some Kanto music when the Gulpin burst out of the sewer after the Trainer's Choice(which was odd, BTW, as Carvanha could've done just as well as Treecko). The giant battle was kinda disappointing. But, we hardly saw any TR, which is a plus. Gulpin's voice was good too, unusually.

Overall rating:
8.7 out of 10!!
Somewhat nostalgic, but otherwise, not a bunch of redeeming qualities. Still worth watching though.

Another great Episode. It had a weird Kanto feeling, to tell you the truth. This string of episodes leading up to the Petalburg Gym has always been my favorite.

-Gulpin's voice was highly creative and required no work. Tamer Zack was right, it sounded like Walrein some bit, only the Gulpin didn't fully pronounce their name during the episode. They also had that wicked burp effect from Sludge. And speaking of voices, I guess Meganium went and kept the Japanese voice, Parasect still sounds like it's old self, and Tangela... well, who care about Tangela ^_^

-Very interesting TC, for the fact that Treecko was the best choice (doesn't sound like a lot, but it's big enough for TC). Carvanha's defense would've placed it in 2nd, and Shedinja with it's Rock weaknesses definitely takes Third.

-I like Megan Hollingshead's replacement when she does Officer Jenny. It sounds nearly identical to the real thing. I'm still getting used to her Joy though...

-Heavy Ball!!

-TR getting flattened at the end: Extremely Nice.

Meganium has been in quite a few episodes, there is another one in a later Hoenn Episode. Parasect appeared for a bit in a late MQ episode, the one with the Magician. Tangela never got a episode to itself, but did appear in "For Whom the Bells Toll".

My favorite lines:

May-"Do you think they evolved?"
Max-" Ummmmmmmmm, no!"

Pretty decent filler episode. It was a good way to display new pokémon without having a random trainer of the week, it kinda reminded me of "Sparks Fly For Magnemite" but with a new twist to it. The professor was a nice character, it's been a while since we've seen anyone like him. It was also good to see the heavy ball making it's first appearance since early Johto. It's nice to see they haven't forgotten about them and adds a good feeling of continuity to the series.

As far as the dub goes, I was really surprised how much of the original music was kept. During the part where Brock is holding the Pokéblock and the Gulpin start to attack, the part when all the Gulpin come out of the manhole and everyone have to fight them back with their pokémon, and when the professor is using his particle beam to get rid of the Gulpin, all the original music was kept (as well as TR's motto theme, but that's usually kept anyway)- definately a plus.

It's still going to take some time for me to get used to Nurse Joy's new voice actor, but I think she does Jenny very well.

Looking at the Heavy Ball segment, I'm amazed at how far the series has come. Back in Kanto, a giant Pokemon (say, for example... a giant onix! *wink wink*) could be captured no-sweat with a regular Pokeball. But now it's become more sophisticated and complex, and enoyable to watch as they try to figure out the best solution to a dilemma.

Professor Jacuzzi's name made me laugh. It's so similar to his Japanese name, but it's really dumb sounding at the same time. In any case, he had a nice voice that was different from the other "old man" voice this show keeps throwing at us.

It was also nice to see all of those pokemon we rarely see anymore. Monjara and Parasect need more screentime, in my opinion.

Probably, even though Hedorah and Gokurin look nothing alike (http://gojistomp.org/movies/hedorah.htm). It wouldn't be the first giant monster-movie spoof they've done (they did an Ultraman spoof in "A Corphish Out of Water").

I won't be seeing the dub of this episode for a while considering I live in the UK, but from watching the clip over at KidsWB's official site, I have to say that Gulpin's voice is so much better than Gokuriin's. The dub versions voice-acting suited it really well I thought, and its nice that Gulpin didn't go around saying its entire name constantly ^.^ Good job on 4Kids part I have to say. If only all the voice acting pleased me this much...

To me, this episode felt like "Sparks Fly for Magnemite" and "Ancient Puzzle of Pokemopolis," got thrown into a blender with a dash of Pokemon Advanced and were shredded up to make a new episode. It wasn't a bad episode or anything, but certain parts definitely felt familar. I was halfway expecting a Swalot to appear and for somebody to spontaneously catch it...

Team Rocket's role was pointless, and the giant Treecko/Gulpin battle was fairly disappointing, but I liked the rest of the episode. I didn't know somebody replaced Jenny and Joy's voice actress, though; personally, I think she does better at imitating Joy. Although, Jenny in this episode was nowhere near as terrible as Jenny in "A Poached Ego!" because in that episode she just... sucked.

Definitely liked seeing Tangela and Parasect in the show again, two of my favorite grass Pokemon there, plus it's good to see Jenny has a few more Pokemon around. Gulpin's voice was really good compared to most of Pokemon Advanced's dub voices... in which it sounds like a human is just saying the Pokemon's name in a deep voice (I'm looking at yoooou, Absol).

Well, compared to last week's episode, this one wasn't as good, but to me it was better than Take the Lombre Home. I'd give it 7.5/10 here.

-I quite liked Gulpin's voice; I almost thought it was the original one! BTW, is it just me, or does Gulpin look like a very big onigiri from some angles?:p And I could've sworn they were using Sludge BOMB, not the regular old Sludge attack.

-Prof. Jacuzzi...*giggles* His voice rung a bell...I think it's Solomon Mouto's.

-UNDERUSED GRASS POKéMON!:D

-I agree totally with V Faction on the Trainer's Choice: Shedinja gets killed by Rock Slide/Sandstorm, and Rock Slide would probably kill Carvanha in one hit without activating Rough Skin. Treecko has plenty of speed as well as the Drain attacks; so it would be the best choice for Larvitar.

-A Heavy Ball...Haven't seen THAT in a while!

-I didn't realize some classic Poké-music was playing during the cannon scene...have to keep my ears open for that on Friday.^_^;

Overall, I'll give it a 7.5/10.

And I could've sworn they were using Sludge BOMB, not the regular old Sludge attack.
I personally wouldn't be upset at them if they did get the attacks messed up. The 2 moves have many similar qualities.

But in this case I think they got it right for the part that needed dubbing. A single shot of sludge that splatters like regular muck is what Sludge would be, and that hit the balloon. Sludge Bomb would be a single or multiple fling of sludge that explodes on contact, something that happened in the latter part of the show but wasn't mentioned by name. That's exactly the way Flannery's Torkoal did it.

And as a side note, this episode made me like a Gulpin a lot more than Grimer. It shows much more creativity. Too bad the same can't be applied to in-game mechanics.

Team Rocket's motto is a spoof of the classic Ultraman villain, Baltan-Seijin (http://members.aol.com/baltan63/baltan.html). The character has big claws (like the Heigani claws that Musashi and Kojirou wore), and it was able to make after-images (http://www.ultraman.com.br/ultramanmostros/002baltan.jpg) of itself the way Musashi and Kojirou did.

Quick plothole I just realized - You know how the Gulpin retreated back into the city after the Pokeblock case was eaten? What's to prevent the Gulpin from returning after they're launched out of the cannon?

Also, did the animation in this episode seem a little...sub-par? It looked how it looked before the show went digital for some reason.

Ah, well. It's still my favorite episode of AG so far. Next week's also looks good.

No they haven't you are probably thinking of the wrong music, the music im talking about is when Prof Jacuzzi is firiing the Gulpin away, the music from the film im talking about which is called 'riding the boat' is from the Japanese version of the film when ash travels across the icey sea with team rocket on that dinghy. as apposed to the synthesized crap from 4kids -_-;

I don't know about this episode. They had some pretty wacked-out episodes in the past ("Address Unown" springs immediately to mind, as does several first season episodes due to animation or story, like "The Evolution Solution"), but ultimately this episode failed with me because it failed to be *funny*. I expected it to be wacky because, hey, come on, GIANT pokemon (that aren't robots)? This would have been a great episode if they hadn't made it so straight-faced. One thing I like about wacky episodes is that they make me laugh and/or keep me laughing because they're weird and they don't take themselves seriously. Even "Address Unown" had a sense of humor, up until we got into Larvitar's memories. This episode, however, barely produced a chuckle, which causes it to fail. It would have been nice if the scientist had been like Professor Westwood or Dr. Quackenpoker, now *that* would have been fun. Otherwise, a thumbs down from me.

Oh, and another episode for contrast: "Tentacool and Tentacruel". That wacky episode had a serious and effective social message, but at least it had a nice amount of humor with Nastina.

2/5

The super-sized fight was cool. And the heavy ball at the end of the episode was a good idea to add.

Am I the only one who had no idea that Megan Hollingshead played Officer Jenny? I mean, I knew she voiced Nurse Joy, and I knew she left, and the new voice will take some getting used to, but Jenny sounded exactly the same to me.

Most likely what it did was launch them several miles away, landing them in lots of different places. Since they were only a problem if too many grouped together in one place, they likely went peacefully into the woods and caused no more trouble.

The distance wouldn't have hurt them it seems, since they are so blubbery they would handle a blast-off better than TR.

And I loved to see Officer Jenny's pokemon fighting, Tangela was cool.

When I saw the previews for this episode, I knew it would be one of those almost Filler-ish episodes. It was, but at least there were a few neat things to note from this episode. We got to see an odd mutation create a giant Gulpin and then a giant Meowth. That has to count for something right? I don't know, this was just sort of random, even for an AG episode. 3/10.

Gulpin is one of the most worst Pokemon ever. Just like this ep.

2.5/10

I remember it from long ago...course it was kinda like a filler and a bit boring but I do remember this line:

May: Do you think they just evolved?!
Max: No May...I don't think so...

Aside from the giant Gulpin and Meowth, it was kinda boring. 1/10

Well I don't think it was a boring episode.

We have seen Officer Jenny with some new pokemon (Parasect, Tangela and Meganium) and it's a rare thing to see.

Also the battle with Gulpin was pretty good.

Gulpin's power as normal size is actually unknown..:(
Heh, Heavy Ball was neened. I think the gulpin was the biggest in the world...

This episode was so dumb to me, but I liked it.

Giant Gulpin vs Giant Treecko was kinda cool and definitely the highlight of this episode.

Overall, it was OK.

Didn't like this episode that much... It was cool to see a Gulpin for the 1st time. It was odd seeing a giant Gulpin as the episode went on. It was cool to see a Heavy Ball in this episode, it's been awhile since there has been 1 shown. Professor Jacuzzi is a really strange name... It was cool to see Tangela and Parasect, it's been a long time since they've been in the Anime. It was cool to see Gulpin get caught with a Heavy Ball.

14/100

A giant Gulpin and the return of the heavy ball? Thta almost made this episode bearable to watch. Still, I didn't really care about tis town's problems. Still, for an apparently city-sized area, is Jenny the only officer there? Where's everyone else?

I thought this episode was really hilarious with the Gulpin's and the Godzilla parody of it. The new voice of Officer Jenny is really identical to its predecessor. This was a nice ending for Treeko before it evolved in the next episode to a Grovyle.

Favorite part was when Gulpin and Treecko grew really large. :)
Gulpin has a hilarious voice. :)
