Okay, to clear some stuff up:
The dub title is "A Fan with a Plan".
Masquerain does have his M7 voice, Larion's voice is fitting.

I saw them in the ad that was shown on WB today, they did the "Pikachu's got something to tell us" thing like with Baltoy. It did show their voices, Larion does sound cool.

Man, the Pokemon Trainer Trivia thing in the dub claimed that Arbok evolved into Seviper! Also, the dub used "god" and "die" in this episode. Man, this episode was intresting...

EDIT: Also, my sister noticed how coincidentally this episode aired before Mother's Day.

-Worst. Trainer's Choice. EVER. I can put up with bad type matchings and such, but claiming that Arbok evolves into Seviper is too blatent of a mistake to ignore.
-Uh-oh! FANGIRLS! May and Shuu, run for your lives!
-...Brock TRIED to do something useful. I guess it's an improvement.
-This ep. didn't wow me all that much.

One thing to say.........XD!!!!!
Turnip Thief! Great line for Brock. And the tomato observation was pretty good too. TC was REALLY messed up, of course. The evolution LOOKS possible, but any fool knows that's not what happens.
TR's motto was funny 'cause of the lack of enthusiasm. Dustox appears too, which is always good. And Wobuffet battles!1!1!!1 Excellent!
Savannah(sp?) and Sandra were cool characters too. The MFP was a good idea, too, IMO.
Masquerain and Lairon make their debuts, and Flareon makes a much needed reappearance. Yay!

Overall rating:
9.4 out of 10!!!
Pretty good pre-Contest ep. I hope the Contest fills the anticipation set by this episode.

I'm usually nice about the TC's, but man was that STUPID! There's a little thing called research and it's a heck of a lot better than "guessing".

But aside from that, I found this to be a nice episode. The dub names are quite captivating. I found Lairon and Flareon to be quite a pair. What a coincidence that their English names have the same vowel sounds. The voices were all good and the episode itself was informative.

I agree 100% How could they make this mistake???

The episode had a funny part or two, team rockets contest motto was a improvement. Its a lot better then the last episode, I enjoyed this episode

darn... I thought I was going to post BEFORE people were going to go apeshit over the trainer's choice... maybe next time...

wow, and I thought 4Kids were smart enough to know that Seviper has no Evolutions/Pre-evolutions (Unless it has one in the 4th generation). Anyway, this episode was pertty good. At long last, Wobbuffet actually used an attack this season. I also noticed that the (previously mentioned in another topic) Mysterious guy was in this episode, but was wearing different clothing (I swear, it looks just like him)

Good episode, can't wait till the next episode

So we're finally in Ruibosu...sorry, Rubello Town. I like the dub name, it's still pretty similar to the original. We're also introduced to Savannah in this episode, and she seems like a pretty good adversary for May in this next contest. I'm glad that the writers give May somebody new each time - just having her square off against Drew all the time would bore me to death.

Heh, Jessie was particularly on in this episode, especially with James and Meowth's indifference. Good to see Wobbuffet actually fighting on occasion. And the Rocket-Dan offered this week's best lines:

MAY: Give us back our ribbons!
JESSIE: I'd sooner give up James and Meowth than give up these ribbons!
JAMES AND MEOWTH (appalled): Excuse us?
JESSIE: Well, you know how badly I want to enter...come on, guys, help me out here.

As for other characters, I notice Brock got a bit more screentime than usual here. And yes, the line "Turnip thief" is a short but sweet classic.

Trainer's Choice...can't they just use regular eyecatches? Who decided that it'd be a game like this? And this one replaces "Game Winning Assist" as the stupidest TC ever. I wonder if there are kids out there who actually believe these things...I sure hope not.

But aside from that, the episode was great. Interesting that it aired the day before Mother's Day...you'd think they would have played that up in the promos.

LoL silly dubbers, Seviper and Arbok are not of the same evolutionary line.

This episode was alright for me, since Flareon is back! Yay! Nothing much happened other than people flattering May once again... heh. I rate it 6/10.

I was hoping at the end of the Trivia Challenge thing, Ash would say, "Neither of them! Seviper has no pre-evolved form!" Either that, or something else that makes the commercial break funny. (The Japanese version did something like that before, way back in Beauty and the Beach.)

Great debut for Masquerain, and Larion too. Neat voices for both make them super cute or super tough respectivaly. Savannah was pretty great, but have I heard that voice before. I liked how she gave commentary on everything that Bulby did (reminds me of the Battle Arena at the Battle Frontier on Emerald).

This episode would have been a 10, but I had to deduct 2 points for a Trainers Choice infraction. Seviper DOES NOT have evoultions. I thought they would say "We tricked ya trainers! Arbok does not evolve into any of these Pokemon".

Pretty good, but the error made me laugh more than the Beautifly=Nuzleaf error in Hokey Pokeballs.

edit:like the sig that goes along?

about the TC... sure they get it wrong sometimes, but is it really that big a deal if they get it wrong? it doesn't really matter really... it's just the "Who's that pokemon" made to sound more "intelligent" It doesn't really matter if they get it wrong, if they showcase the "pokemon of the day", then they did their job. they could even have Magikarp evolve into Raikou, but as long as they showcase Raikou, they did their job. Regardless of how wrong they are.

besides, Seviper does kinda look like the evolved form of Arbok... if you squint and look at the right angle from upside down...

WTF? Liza Ortiz had/has talent?

I see I didn't make myself clear enough apperently...

first of, what I meant was that liza ortiz used the exact same voice for SANDRA as she does for all of her characters...

secondly, I also said that 4kids should add new voice actors to their current cast.

Wow, what an embarrassing and appauling mistake on 4kids part. Looks like someone is going to be fired next week.

As for the episode, I thought it was great. It was a very nice set-up episode, and the mother/daughter combo was pretty interesting.

Was it just me, or was there a LOT of blushing in this episode? Ash blushed, May blushed, Drew blushed, Brock blushed, the Mother blushed, the fans blushed...the hell?

The animators must have really liked blushing in this episode, whenever someone said anything a character blushed. Brock's fantasy was hilarious though.

I also really liked how Dustox and Wobbufett were used in this episode, they were neglected for awhile. Snatching the ribbons instead of the pokemon was a nice change of pace as well. And anyone find it hilarious that Jessie wanted to attack the daughter? Bulbasaur using Vine Whip to wrap around the daughter and pull her back put a dirty thought in my head. And the mother saying she "likes Vine whips"? LOL?

Pretty good episode, and I like how May is still nervous about her contests.

*waves the WTF flag*...WTF is wrong with the dubbers??? I don't remember hearing that Arbok evolves into Seviper! And I don't remember Skitty winning in Fallarbor Town. Beautifly did!!!

WTF? Liza Ortiz had/has talent?

Yes.

She does get casted a lot. But that's the casting people's responsibility. The woman's just trying to get work.

And no, she's not greedy for having so many roles. A character of the day is a much smaller paycheck than, say, a regular character.

Masquerain's Bubble attack looked pretty cool! I'm glad to see for myself the difference between Bubble and Bubblebeam.

Brock wasn't too out of control with the love thing, I noticed.

Isn't Wobbuffet supposed to return the attack back to its opponent? That confused me.

The Trainer's Choice was the best part of the episode. Just as I thought they couldn't screw up evolutions...

I really liked this ep,it was weird, but funny. The voice for Masquerain was pretty good, as for the way they pronounced masquerain's name, I kinda liked it I was pronounced it differently, the fangirls were uhh interesting. When that man at the contest said " My point? You can't enter 'cause you never won a single ribbon" that was too funny and Jessie searching for a ribbon.
The trainers choice, at first it got me, I thought at first it did have a pre-evolved form and then I remembered it didn't, but the TC really doesn't bother me that much. It took me a while to realize, that they said Skitty was in the Fall Arbor contest, when Beautifly was the pokemon who won it.
Pikachu really seemed to really like Sandra.
The TR motto was funny, 'caused Jessie seemed to be the only one who got into it and when TR got blasted off by water pulse I loved when Moewth and James said " Ungrateful twerps are the worst kind".

My rating: 8/10

The Big Al
7th May 2005, 7:11 PM
So, Drew got under May's skin and she decided to use Bulbasaur. A stupid decision that will cost her royally in the next episode.

The motto was funny. Meowth and James were borderline depressed. Then Jessie asked the twerps to put them out of their misery. Have they at last been broken. *Looks at future episodes.* Dang it. :@

I was wondering when they were going to get into the requirement system.

An okay episode but lackluster in plot after the gems of the past two weeks.

This was a pretty boring episode. A rather standard plot that didn't have too many surprises... At least Wobbuffet actually did something (though the attacks didn't return like they're supposed to). The scenes with May and Drew were good (maybe I'm becoming a contestshipper, I dunno) and I liked Brock's "Turnip Theif" line. Other than that, it was a rather dull episode. I'd take a stab at TC, but everyone else has done so quite well already.

I think they might have been going on a rumor from the game; if you update Arbok it will evolve into Seviper.

In my opinion, Seviper looks more like an evolved Ekans.

Considering Rattle Snakes are Vipers it would make sense. However why would a Cobra evolve into a viper? Oi that one sucked. I thought the type matching was bad this one was let's see how stupid will can really be.

I also noticed that the (previously mentioned in another topic) Mysterious guy was in this episode, but was wearing different clothing (I swear, it looks just like him)
I thought I saw the Mystery guy, too. He was wearing a different colored sweatshirt, I think, but he had the long brown hair.

Anyway, this episode was okay. TC was terrible. It never bothers me when they make a mistake with it that much, but it is pretty sad that they have to continue to mislead any gullible fans out there with their misinformed Trainer's Choices. I mean come on, Arbok evolves into Seviper? If you've never seen the Pokemon before, that might make sense, but 4kids really needs to get their act together about this. :/

Brock's line of "Turnip Thief" was nice. And so was Jessie's "Wobbufet needed a bath," and the other line about giving Meowth and James.

I was just thinking that Wobbufet wasn't doing much besides serving as extra comic relief right before it started using its Counter and Mirror Coat attacks (or rather, only Counter, since they rarely mention Mirror Coat).

I'll rate this episode 7/10, like a gazillion episodes preceding this one. >_>

Brock wasn't too out of control with the love thing, I noticed.
Probably didn't want to risk finding out she was married or something, not to mention she had a kid, a bit more of a woman than Brock usually goes for. One does have to love her comments though, that Brock will one day be in high demand among women for his household skills. ^_^

Isn't Wobbuffet supposed to return the attack back to its opponent? That confused me.
They never named what move it was using, but although it looked like its normal Counter/Mirror Coat, it behaved just like Safeguard in the anime, which just blocks the attack. So I say it was using Safeguard, as that is a move Wobbuffet learns.

I loved Drew in this episode, he just has so much more charisma than Gary, and a way of goading May without actually being outright mean. He also doesn't care about fans or popularity much, unlie Gary did for a while. I loved how he just smiled and flicked his hair before walking off after the fan girls deserted him.

How do you think they got a hold of those Norman and Drew action figures/statues?

Poor Ash... what's it gonna take before more people recognize him? He should be among the handsome young trainers in that book!

Other pluses:

Cute scenes of May getting an inflated ego.

Cute scene of the Coordinator mother getting stagefright.

Masquerain had a great voice.

Negative:

I once had faith in "Trainer's Choice" but error after error has made me wish they'd just go back to only "Who's that Pokemon" or more ideally do away with both and put in some Oak Pokemon lectures from Japan.

The whole scene with TR getting blasted off by Water Pulse left me confused. What exactly did the little girl whisper when asking her mom to use Water Pulse? Did she intend to blast them off or just put out the fiery balloon and TR's bad luck interfered?

Geodude
8th May 2005, 7:12 AM
I think she reminded her mom that Water Pulse might be the best way to get rid of them. She seems to be a pretty smart kid, after all.

*copies and pastes comments from elsewhere*

Heh, I loved TR's motto:

Savannah: Hey, those aren't yours!
Jessie: Prepare for trouble, they are today!
James: If you can't win 'em, steal 'em, that's what we always say!
Jessie: To protect my entry status from devastation!
James: To allow a certain contestant to complete her registration...
Jessie: To denounce the evils of losing, that's true!
James: To extend her winning streak from zero to two...
Jessie: Jessie!
James: And James...
Jessie: Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!
James: Surrender now, do me a favor, or I'll have to fight.
Jessie: This contest will have a cute winner by tonight!

As far as the name changes go:
Ruibosu -> Rubello (mentioned)
Tsukiko -> Savannah
Hoshika -> Sandra

Nice job with the names, 4Kids.

I agree with whoever commented on Savannah's and Sandra's relationship. Sandra's a cute kid too. She's embarrassed by her mom's antics with the fan club, but obviously loves her dearly, and seems mature for her age too.

4Kids went wrong, of course. They mess up the TC quite often, actually, but never like they did with this episode. Seviper has no evolutions, nor does it have pre-evolutions (as of today). And Arbok doesn't evolve. Like I said, 4Kids just botched things up, probably out of lack of research. :/

I don't really have a lot to say about the episode, since the next one was so much more interesting, but I've gotta say it's always a pleasure to see Drew in an episode. These two contest episodes may not have had as many contestshipping hints, but I still love the interaction between May and Drew. Savannah was a great guest character for the episode. Also, I love the scene where that mothers club clustered around Drew, then May. That was hilarious, especially when Drew got nervous. :D

Okay, now how can I have watched this episode and forgotten about Wobbie's safeguard attacks? That was AWESOME!!! :D At least I watched the episode a second time the other night, so it's fresher in my memory. I loved Jessie calling him the "king of deflection" too. ;) Too bad Wobbuffet hardly "attacks" anymore (at least I know from the captioning thread that he does safeguard again in "Rollout Loving Donphan"), he's been Team Rocket's most awesome fighter.

This episode was one of my favorites of the entire Hoenn saga...I also knew i was going to love this one.

Positives
-OMG Wobbuffet is useful?
-The little girl and her mom's relationship was cute
-May and Drew (contestshippyness) wonder that I enjoyed both times they spoke to each other.
-Drew in general - I loved his expressions...we've never seen him under pressure or sweat, so it was funny and adorable. My favorite part of the whole episode was the following:
Fangirl - Can I have your autograph?
Drew - No, I don't do that...(flicks hair)
Encyclopika - XD AHHHHH!!!! Kawaii!
-Lairon's voice was great...I've never been so impressed with a dubbed voice.
-The fangirls were hilarious.

Negitives
-Masquerain's voice disappointed me because it didn't sound male...in the end I convinced myself that all bug pokemon have high voices, which is a fact for the smaller ones, which Masquerain is a part of.
-The TC - when they asked the question I was like "Oh, it must be a trick question" and thought that was clever of them. Then when they said Seviper I'm like "You lazy bast*rds!" I'm starting to think 4kids has new staff or something because they never made this stupid of mistakes before. This one was just, dumb!

I give it a 10/10, even with the negitives because they weren't that bad and didn't intereupt my enjoyment so much. A very great episode! And I so agree with what you said Pokemon Fan about Drew. I find him to be better at being a rival than Gary was. There's a difference between rival and bully, and I found Gary to be a bully up until the end.

Got to saw this ep today here in Canada. Top three errors I have found in this episode are:

1) Arbok evolves into Seviper (already known by all)
2) May exclaimed she won the Fallarbor Contest with Skitty when it was BEAUTIFLY who won the Contest.
3) I found it strange that Bulbasaur's Razor Leaf was able to cancel out a Flareon's Flamethrower.

Other than those three idiotic things, this episode was preety good.

I'd give it a 7.2/10

It's been almost two entire seasons since Wobbuffet actually did an attack. I think the last time it battled was in "A Poached Ego". As for the trainer's choice, they probably forgot what happened in that episode and thought Jessie's Arbok just evolved into a Seviper.

In R/S, Masquerain had a fairly awesome "battle cry". I really expected Masquerain to sound cool(sort of like Steelix had a cool "battle cry" in G/S/C and wound up sounding cool in the anime). In this episode, Masquerain didn't sound awesome at all! But I guess the company wanted Masquerain to sound the way it did.

Stealing May's and Savannah's ribbons was bad enough, but Jessie's character in this episode was totally revolting. I kinda feel sorry for James and Meowth as they weren't at all interested in stealing ribbons as much as Jessie was. She almost got away with it and wasn't willing to give them back (even though eventually she did). I'd say this episode was the worst all because of Jessie and her pride.

Yay finally we arrive at the location of May's next Contest competition! We haven't seen any Contest action since the Verdenturf Convention. Loved that Drew appeared and that May was trying to get his attention by showing off her two ribbons although I think Drew still had more. Then he got swamped by a crowd of his adoring fans, it was like something out of a Shipping fic :p

Then we met one the COTD, an older lady who seemed to be interested in Contests as well as possibly May's dad Norman. It was funny to see those other fangirls approach May just to admire Norman. Seeing May and the lady getting to know each was interesting, it was the typical backstory before the major Contest. The scene with Borck imagining himself cooking for pretty girls was a riot! He's always thinking such odd thoughts. I was interested in the COTD lady's team which consisted of Flareon and Lairon; two Pokemon that were distinct opposites.

Watching Drew practicing at night with his new Masquerain was interesting since it knew an awesome Water based appeal. Team Rocket interfered right when May was about to practice with her newly caught Bulbasaur which kind of ticked me off since they always appear at the worst times. It took a combination of Pikachu, Lombre, Mudkip, Bulbasaur, and Flareon to send them packing and the episode ended with no drama. I was disappointed. 7/10

This episode was ok... It was cool to see Masquerain and Lairon for the 1st time, very cool Pokemon! This was the episode with the weird TC - Arbok evolving into Seviper... It was cool to see Flareon again. Savannah looks to be a great opponent for May in the Contest. It was interesting and different to see TR trying to steal others' ribbons instead of Pokemon for a change. It was definitely odd that May said she won the Fallarbor town contest with Skitty instead of Beautifly.

Well, this was an okay episode. The MFP or whatever they were called weren't as annoying as I thought that they would be. This really wasn't a memorable episode even though it introduced the Grand Festival rules.

Strange that I never seen this episode before. I think that around the time this episode got aired, I missed a lot of episodes that aired and therefore lost touch where the anime was. I actually enjoyed this episode a lot and I thought this MFP and Drew were both cool and enjoyable to watch. I always enjoyed the prequels to contests episodes - they are or interesting or comic, and in this case, they are both.
