It's May's 5th contest and she is still gunning for her 3rd win, this time she's using her Combusken. However Combusken still hasnt quite mastered it's fire techniques. Will she win against Jessie & James' Chimecho?

Hahaha! I love this episode! Combusken was so sweet^^ I`m glad, he won a Contest.
Swellow`s training was cool also.
But my fav was Jessie with Chimecho! She had a nice fight with May and James couldn`t stand it LOL
I think, James really loves this little pokemon :)

I really like this episode!^^
Combusken's appeal was great, good to see that May didn't panic.
I loved the background music when Swellow managed to do Aerial Ace, it was the first time I heard it...I hope they won't change it in the dub, it suited the scene perfectly ;(
I felt sorry for James when he was crying all along; he really cares about his Chimecho^^.
It was also good that it got some more screentime.

I just watched this episode! Its the best contest in my opinion!
Jessie:I wonder what other moves chimecho knows?
Cut to flashback
James:Whatever you don't tell chimecho to use double edge!
Back to reality
Jessie:Aha chimecho use..
James:Nooo!!
The trainer's choice was actually right
Which pokemon is the best to face flaafy - misdreavus, swinub or shroomish
answer:swinub

Yes, the final non-filler episode of Season 8, what a relief that we are finally done the season (except for one more filler). Now how do you end the season with a bang? Not with the biggest paint edit in history (you sandwich!!!), but with the Lillycove contest.

May's way of getting away from the problem with Fire Spin was pretty smart, and Combusken really showed off his skills in his appeal round. But what was with Jessie today?! She abused Chimecho, used Heal Bell then Astonish, and she gets a perfect score that got the crowd going?! Unfair! Pokemon should not ever be treated by that!

The semifinals were intresting, Chimecho getting abused again, and even a flashback to the original Chimecho episode!

The whole battle between May and Kelly was the best ever, and the whole Psyshic situation made it one of the most tense battles ever! All around, very great show. Thanks 4Kids, you kept Season 7 great, full of suprizes, and false evolution claims (seviper!), and the biggest Onigirl change in history.

I've always found the contest episodes more interesting than Ash's GYM battles in Hoenn, and this episode is no exception. Nice to see the unique ways each coordinator got into the second round, I'm pretty surprised Jessie made it when Chimecho hurt everyones ears.

Nice to see Ash finally finish training one of his Pokemon as well as return to watch May in her contest. Is it just me or did Ash seem to really be impressed with Kelly? He seemed to notice and compliment her a lot.

Both of May's final battles were good, and it really does seem like all of Ash's strategies have rubbed off on her. Combusken using fire spin at the ceiling is definitely something Ash would do, and it really seems like May is trying to copy his techniques when she watches him battle.

Kelly better return someday, she's a great character and needs to be in future contests.

"I love you guys!"

I'm sorry, but that quote had me in stiches.

Anyways, this was probably the best contest thus far, and that's NOT solely because of Kanata's pure sex appeal. (Despite the fact that it greatly helps) This contest is the first time Haruka has used some really complex strategy, and by that, I mean without the help of Super Skitty or dumb luck. Poor Chimecho. x_x Sadly, this is probably the most battle time it's ever going to receive over the course of the series.

Great contest episode! It was good to see May used a panic situation to her advantage. Seeing James's reaction when Jessie was abusing Chimecho was funny. And the way Combusken countered Grumpig was clever.

Jessie, to put it mildly, ruled in this episode. Simply ruled.

James' reaction to how she handled Chimecho in battle was also pretty cool. And Kelly is a really cool character.

...But back to Jessie. I'm glad she wasn't disqualified, and I'm glad she was able to somewhat hold her own for a change...but mostly I'm glad they made her so deliciously evil, especially to poor Chimecho. LOL!

Woo-hoo, I've been looking forward to this episode all year since I first saw the pictures on Serebii, and it definitely did not disappoint. Even though Drew wasn't there, this time there was much more to help me enjoy the episode- namely Jessie and Chimecho. :D I loved that Team Rocket caught a break for once, with Jessie hurting everyone's ears but still getting a perfect score for technique. :D That screeching did look awfully painful for everyone, but at least she pulled it off. I also liked James's reactions to Jessie handling Chimecho, especially when he went teary-eyed. It was nice to hear the comment about how the soothing sound of Chimecho's voice shows how much it loves its trainer (even though its trainer wasn't using it). :D :D :D The battle with Combusken was great too. Too bad that Jessie didn't win and Team Rocket still got blasted off (LOL at Swellow hitting them from out of nowhere), but I really enjoyed Jessie's part in the contest as a whole.

Unfortunately, I forgot to set my tape for an hour and I missed "Judgment Day" (though I still saw Brock running with the sandwich in his mouth LOL), but luckily the Cubs and Sox aren't playing on WGN Friday so chances are I'll still get to tape it.

Omg...this epsiode was really awesome! May did a great job. ^^ Kelly was great too. I wish they will bring back Kelly. She is too cool. XD And I also liked when Ash was training his Swellow to do Airal Ace. So awesome! ^___^ And yeah I notice Ash took a interest of Kelly. XD He thought she was really good. I notice that he said it. XD But anyway....awesome, awesome epsiode. 10/10 Oh yeah...Jessie was mean to Chimecho. James told her not to abuse it...and she does it. ;; Man I felt so sorry for James...he loves his Chimecho.

This episode was interesting. For once they actually made Psychic be an attack rather than a cheap parlor trick.

Still not sure how Jessie got a perfect score for abusing Chimecho. I think she used Astonish too many times.

Oh yah, Grumpig's voice was annoying.

Sorry to be so negative. It was a great couple of episodes with the contest. Next contest will be so much better though.

Grats to Swellow for learning Aerial Ace. Bring on the next gym battle so I can see Adan that much sooner! <3

This episode seemed a bit rushed, actually. It skipped several sections and a whole round of matches. Maybe just because Swellow and three appeals also needed putting in. To be honest, I'd rather have contests being two whole episodes long (with an optional pre-contest filler)

Just watched the ep and it was good. Knew who Kelly was as soon as I saw her cause people talk about her all the time on here. Too bad I missed her famous scene though. XD

Is it just me or did Ash seem to really be impressed with Kelly? He seemed to notice and compliment her a lot.
I noticed that as well.

Was anyone else annoyed how Team Rocket got blasted off for no reason? I mean, Swellow did it unintentionally but it was still stupid and unnecessary.

Jessie is such a moron. Not only did she use Chimecho with abusive force (to the extent of hurting other people's ears), she even told it to use Double Edge when James told her not to use that attack. Oh well, at least she didn't cheat.

I just have to comment on how absolutely impressive May's appeal was. She took a bad situation and turned it into a spectacular display of talent. It's a pity she got a fairly low score, but she definitely deserved to get in for that. It's this kind of thing that made me get into Contests in the first place.

I also liked how she used the tough Combusken, since Torchic before did not get contest spotlight, and initially I thought she was only going to use cutesy Pokemon for appeals. I have to say, this surprised me.

May was very kind when she saved Grumpig, i loved this.

So it's time for May to compete in her 5th Contest and she's using Combusken? I would've thought she'd go with something a little more, graceful to be honest. I thought it's fireball appeal was pretty good though, all the judges thought so. Even Ash, who was outside with Swellow practicing Aerial Ace was watching and was praising the performance so I guess it went better than I thought. The rival girl this time around seemed to be surprised.

The rival girl and her Grumpig put on a better show though. Their combination of Pokeblock and psychic was almost flawless in beauty. Grumpig had exellent control, able to manipulate them into any size it wanted. So of course the judges loved it. Swellowed continued training but wasn't able to hit the mark, too bad. Jessie and Chimecho were great. Chimecho's sound based attacks seemed to soothe the crowd, then it's Astonish made everyone cover their ears in pain! I loved the contrast between softness and loudness and so did the judges (even giving it a PERFECT score!).

Thye battle rounds were cool, though I was disappointed that May versus Jessie only lasted a few seconds. Combusken really defeated Chimecho swiftly, probably because James never let it battle much before. Swellow did well and was able to gain mastery of Aerial Ace. The final battle between Grumpig and Combusken was terrible since both were evenly matched. The best move was Combusken's fire attack being manipulated into a dragon by Grumpig's psychic move! I'm glad May won, she deserved it. 6/10 for the lovely Contest in Lilycove City; Where the land ends, and the sea begins.

...And May did it! Combusken pull it off. A c'mon judge, that's not fair!

Even more when you realize how lame Kelly was with her appeal :/ what is everyone hypnotized? Talking about terrible Jessie was .... no wait she got a perfect score o_o!

Hahaha James was really concerned about his Chimecho!

And that's all, May had one clever victory typical of her.

I will call it a day for now, in my advanced challenge marathon!

This isn't a bad contest episode really. I liked May's fireball and how it turned a potential disaster into a very interesting move, I don't agree with that last judge May did pretty good turning it around.
It is odd that Jessie got a perfect score when she practically hurt Chimecho to do that, how May's score was lower I won't know. It was still good though James was funny poor guy really loves that Chimecho.

Grumpig is a strong pig but not strong enough to beat a powerfull pokemon like Combusken.
I didn't understand how Combusken's appeal was good enough to make it to the battle rounds. It was a pretty awful appeal, maybe the worst in Hoenn.

This episode was good. It was great seeing Combusken and its moves in the contest, it's moves are really cool and strong. I'm glad May and Combusken didn't panic when things went wrong with Fire Spin. It was funny when Jessie told Chimecho to use Double-Edge after James specifically ordered her not to use the attack. That Astonish attack is really crazy sounding. The battle between Combusken and Grumpig was great. I'm glad may won the contest.

I couldn't think of a better thread to bring this up in, and it seemed to silly to make another thread for it, but I find it an odd inconsistency with the show that there doesn't seem to be a fixed rule about using objects in the appeal portion. Surely the Pokemon should solely be demonstrating its own powers? Or if objects are allowed, shouldn't it be a requirement? It seems trainers who use objects have an unfair advantage.

I think the objects have been allowed, May had Skitty juggling balls in an earlier appeal. Not to mention in that very first Contest they had a Venemoth pouring tea into a cup or stuff like that.

I guess either by showing off a Pokemon or doing a skill with it counted as a decent appeal.

Also, Bulba the Great, feels kind of odd rewatching these episodes now that you're older, isn't it? You have the memories from when you were younger but you see them in a different light now that you've aged so many years since you last watched them. :)

It's so bizarre. But it's also absolutely wonderful. I can be cynical, but nothing will ruin the fond memories I have of growing up a part of the Advanced Generation. Especially knowing where the anime's headed from here...it's like fondly going back and re-reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Once upon a time, that was the latest book available. Now it's the midway point, in many ways the turning point of the series.

Likely continue through D/P. I can't say in full honesty that I agree with the voice cast change, and I certainly remember when Ms. Blaustein joined the message boards after the switch, and how much I fought to have 4Kids come back. But I don't loathe PUSA and I would like to find out what happened in the black hole of my memory that is D/P.

Bad final battle. So let me get this straight: Kelly couldn't use Grumpig's Psychic attack on Combusken's Flamethrower because it wasn't aimed directly at it? No writers. That was painful to watch for so many reasons. Also, I like how Combusken's indirect flames knocked Grumpig out before Grumpig's super-effective Psychic attack knocked out Combusken.

It must've been painful for the writers to focus on Swellow for two episodes considering the lack of focus it gets. Just to master Aerial Ace.

Seeing both Kelly and May during the contest was awesome and this is another good contests and I especially liked the battle with May and her Combusken.
