This special was really nice and original in my opinion. I liked that they added Sakura in a special because we haven't really seen what had come of her.
Though i wished we got to see some more pokemon of her. Well at least we found out that she got a Beautifly. Though I wonder why Misty was shocked when she saw Beautifly. Maybe just because it was a new pokemon.

Also the teaching Psyduck how to swim parts were really nice and hilarious.

Overall I give it a 9/10

Misty, Sakura, and Tracey are three of my favorite characters so having all three in one episode is great. I really want to see this episode. It seems good and I like how it shows where the badges came from.

One thing that's bugged me for years was finally cleared up after witnessing this, and that is... Where do they get all the badges? XD; Loved this episode because Kenji, Kasumi and Sakura were all there. Joy~! :3

I really liked this episode. Kenji looks so adorable in swim trunks X3 I especially liked this episode because not only did we see where the badges come from, but Kasumi had a gym leader battle. Course, she has before, but this one just seemed much more official for some reason ^^

I like Sakura and it's really grate episod. We know how to make Badges now :) Kasumi is the best! I like when Kasumi has battle as gym leader. And teaching Psyduck how to swim is so cute and sweet! :)

Umbreon > Espeon

This was a good chronicles episode. Interesting to see Sakura back along with da Trace. The ending battle for the Cascade badge was short but sweet, and I wasn't really suprised that she lost. A one on one battle would require your strongest pokémon, so I was quite suprised she didn't use Gyarados instead.

All voices were kept in this episode, including both Sakura and Daisy. Can't speak for time cuts but it seemed an error free dub episode.

What purpose did running around the block and smashing up wood have anything to do with making gym badges?

Yeah I do wonder now since Psyduck is a sucky swimmer how it will ever make for a good pokémon in that gym lol.

So they kept Sakura and Daisy's names AND remembered their voices?

There was a miner thing that annoyed me, which was when Misty was going to call out her Corsela she was holding a pokeball and not a Lure ball, this is only small.
The second thing, which I thought was prety major was that she had three Johto badges (Zepher, the laby bird one which i cannot remember and another one) yet she said that she needed five more to enter a competition and the cascade would be one of them, but i thought that the Johto League and Indigo league badges were for different leagues. This part really annoyed me.

it seemed an error free dub episode. The only thing (VERY small) that I didn't like was when Misty was explaining how she knew Tracey, and said something to the effect of 'He travelled with me and Ash when we were on Orange Island'. It seemed as if she was talking about a singular island as opposed to the 'archipelago', as they liked to call it.

And another lil' thing... Now obviously they'd have more than one, because it's a water type gym, but Misty went to the poolside and fed Seel as opposed to Dewgong. Probably just a Seel as opposed to the Seel, but meh.

I thought I already posted here? >.> Haven't seen the dub version, and I'm not planning on it, but at least they remembered who Sakura was. :P

After watching the original a while ago, I thought it was a pretty good episode. It was cool to see how gym badges are made, and bringing back Sakura was cool because she's a great character... and she's really cute too. I also liked that Koduck got to use its psychic attacks for the first time in quite a while. I just love the little guy. XD

As soon as Misty said "Sakura" I shouted "Thank you god!" And then her voice and Daisys voice was normal too! :D Anyways twas pretty good though and Pysduck can't swim :( But Corsola was a good battler. And Tracey was good to be seen away from the Oak.

This is one of the rare episodes that goes into the "behind the scenes" stuff we don't often see, and I like that. Another one would be the Japanese referee episode in the main series. It's always interesting to see things that have never been dealt with before, such as where badges come from and what's involved in being an official battle referee.

7th July 2005, 12:09 PM
Just another quick question... Psyduck used confusion and disable, correct? Well as a dark type should Poochyena not have been able to fight it off, or should it have been not very effective, or is cos P'duck just plain rawks that it overpowered it? Ah, it was probably weak as heck if those two morons needed to nick badges anyway.

it good that they kept Sakura's name and voice though! It makes you wonder why they screwed up on the Raikou one?Yeah. It really makes you wonder how they made so many errors in that one thing. Some other Chronicles mightn't be perfect, but none of them have as close to as many slip-ups as the Raikou thing. It makes me ashamed to be a dub-defender quite frankly.

Geodude
7th July 2005, 1:15 PM
The psychic attacks themselves did not hurt Poochyena. It was stopped in its tracks with Disable, then hurled into the tree with Confusion. Confusion didn't hurt it, but hitting the tree sure did. :p

Surprised nobody mentioned that when Misty was introducing Tracey to Sakura, Misty said that Tracey has "been assisting Professor Oak the last few years" since being with them in the Orange Islands. One of the rare mentions of passing time in the anime.

ChaosMage
8th July 2005, 12:24 AM
So we have confirmation that Johto took more than 1 year?. Ash is at least 13 then! Yay, closure!

Geodude
8th July 2005, 5:11 AM
Not if the quote wasn't the same in the original. Murg or someone will have to confirm that. But even if it wasn't the same, in this case, I think an acknowledgment of passing time by 4Kids should be considered canon, or close enough to it. We'll take what we can get in this case. :p

You can't use the same eight badges from Kanto or Jouto to get into both leagues. >>; In the game, you battle the elite four at the same place no matter which region you started in, but in the animé the leagues are completely different and you have separate tournaments for each region. I thought that would have been evident simply by watching the show. XP

Finally saw this episode...

Good parts:

-Tracey with no shirt on (who could have seen that coming)
-Sakura and Espeon

Bad parts:

-That pain-in-the-neck Psyduck
-The few seconds of Feraligatr
-Misty's sisters (they can just get on your nerves)

So an okay episode...

I just saw this episode today. It was an ok episode compared to the few chronicle episodes I've seen so far (The Legend of Thunder, Cerelean Blue, and this one). It was good to see Tracey, Sakura, and Psyduck again. Those guys who stole the badges were kind of lame. I don't mean to put down weak pokemon, but what kind of thugs carry around a Zigzagoon and a Poochyena.

Ah! The sweet taste of chronicles episodes! I even saw the one I missed from last week, the poke coral eppy. I forgot that cassidy's VA changed. I was still expecting her to sound like Mai Valentine from yugioh.

Sakura is back too! She has gym badges as well, boy someone's been practicng their battle skills. It was also nice to see her with one of May's best pokemon. It was cool.

Psduck, the poor funny thing. Still can't swim, but it can battle okay. I'd like to see it learn, while it still is funny as always. Misty is a great gym leader, and her sisters are lazy. lol She probably makes badges in her spare time!! :D

I'm beginning to like Psyduck. I might have one of my fanfic trainers raise a shiny Psyduck with that personality problem. :D

Too bad Feraligator only showed up for one scene, but then again, he got lots of screen time in the sumo episode. :)

Nice to see how badges are made, I'm sure a lot of people were wondering how they appeared. Those two goons were really ugly and weak, but then if they had strong Pokemon, they wouldn't be stealing badges, would they?

Okay, I'm not going to go all crazy and start posting Psyduck's name half a dozen times out of wild excitement like I did with the first Misty special (can you tell I love the loveable dunce? :D ), so I'll just go right into reviewing.

I didn't like this special as much as I did the first one, partly because Sakura's voice seemed a bit off (good thing I haven't watched her first two episodes lately) and the plot was long and boring. What livened it up was Psyduck, by and large. He was hilarious, and I was reminded just how much I miss him. I don't miss Misty much, but I do miss Psyduck. He was just a comic gem on the show. His spot may have been filled by Wobbuffet, who I also love (duh), but he will always be special because he was first. Too bad they couldn't convince him to get over his fear of the water, but I loved the recurring gag with him getting scared and running off every time he even touched the water. LOL

As a side note, I can't believe that the pic in the caption thread from this special of Misty, Sakura, and Tracey working on the badges actually made me *think* it was a bomb. :p I guess I haven't looked at the episode pics lately.

Girls love Tracey because he's a sex machine.

I love Tracey because he is what I should have been, a hermit going around and watching Pokemon, making sketches of them. (Which makes me wonder, was Professor Oak a Pokemon watcher in his youth. The fourth movie shows Sammy sketching Celebi and Pikachu together.)

I guessed that Sakura would get an Espeon, because it was the logical choice, seeing as her sisters had the other Eevee evolutions.

Also that old man was a bit harsh with Misty, getting her to make her own badges.

I thought it was neat that we were able to see Tracey, Sakura, and her Espeon. I have always really liked Sakura as a character. I never really thought about how gym badges were made. Although, now I know how hard of a process it is. Although, I think the man was a bit harsh on them, but everything worked out in the end. I also really liked how they kept getting Psyduck to swim. It's too bad their attempts were unsuccessful. I was happy that the badge thieves were caught, and I thought Psyduck did a great job battling. I thought Sakura's Espeon was pretty strong when we were able to see it battle Misty's Corsola. It was sweet how Sakura and Misty exchanged the Cascade badges they made themselves as a friendship token.

The first episode where Tracey visited Misty at gym,and it was nice seeing Sakura again with her already evolved Espeon.Psyduck was funny as always with his incompetence and fear from water, and it was interesting to see how badges were made. That old man really pushed Misty to maximum with hard work, and it was sweet that Tracey and Sakura were on her side helping her about it.

Psyduck managed to convince him afterall how he can be of use when its needed defeating realizing that Misty is a good trainer.Battle between her and Sakury wasnt too long but interesting.Corsola gave the best of herself but Espeon in end conquered victory, but its ok.You win some, you lose some.I also like how friendship between Sakura and Misty was strenghtened with badge exchange.
Overall a good episode.

A great episode since we get an inside look at the lives of Gym Leaders and all their duties, not something you see everyday. Psyduck still hasn't learned to swim, but I liked Tracey's attempt at teaching it how to swim, even if it failed it had to resort to using an innertube lol. Sakura appeared out of nowhere are we learned she's challenging Gyms in Kanto. I was surprised to learn that Gym badges had to be made by a special craftsman; I thought the League made them and handed them out to the Leaders of a gym. During their whole experience of making a Cascade badge, Sakura proved to be a skilled trainer even taking on two thugs with her Espeon! That should've been enough to earn her the badge but they resorted to a battle. Still good though, 5/10

It was an okay episode, kind of boring though, the first Misty episode was better. The Psyduck part at the beginning was funny, and it was nice seeing Sakura/Espeon again. Although she got Johto badges and went to Kanto to get badges? I know they can get other badges but I presume it would have to be in that region, rather mixing it up unless Sakura isn't serious about getting it.

I don't think Misty should have to make or work to get her badge, they should able to simply order it or whatever.

There's potential in just about everything. Chronicles has potential to shed light on characters who aren't Ash and given them character development, and to broaden the world of Pokémon. For the most part, the series does succeed, but it unfortunately delves into “non-canon” territory. Why this is the case, I don't know (whether it's because of the fans or it was always meant to be non-canon), and I find it disappointing that these episodes aren't considered canon. In some cases, perhaps it's for the best the series doesn't count towards canon, but I personally don't see why they can't.

“The Blue Badge of Courage”, despite the title being a painful attempt at being a punny reference to the classic novel The Red Badge of Courage, is one of those episodes I feel I should like, but at the same time I'm left feeling empty. There are some good ideas here, such as Misty trying to end the long gag of Psyduck being unable to swim—which would help add to his character, and where gym badges come from. Are they bad ideas? No, of course not. Were they executed right? Depends on how you want to view them.

The idea of teaching Psyduck to swim isn't a bad thing because the entire episode doesn't revolve around it, however, it doesn't get resolved. Which is honestly fine, but there's no real explanation as to why Psyduck just can't swim, or why it is he refuses to get near water without a floatie. It was touched upon in the past that Psyduck is not a swimmer, but the question of “why”—far as I can remember—was just never answered. If he has a phobia of water, it's ironic, and it's funny, but it's an answer. But because nothing ever comes out of it outside of Misty being scolded for having a Water Pokémon that can't swim, it's pretty much a disappointment in the end.

As for where the gym badges are made, that is an excellent idea to explore, and that is one reason why I would like to consider Chronicles to be canon. I'm sure some gym leaders make their own badges, and the fact that we've seen different versions of identifiable gym badges seems to confirm this. However, considering on how many badges are given out and that gym leaders do have a life outside of the gym, it makes sense that someone makes the badges for them. I like to think that whoever produces the badges is certified by the respectful League of that region, because as Kinso said, there are thieves who sell badges for profit. Though I think this is more of a pain on the producer's side because they would have to file paperwork about the thefts so as to not be falsely accused of selling the badges themselves for extra profit, and if they don't get the badges back and overturn those payments, that's a waste of resources.

So one would think that someone like Kinso would have better security to prevent such burglaries from happening. But that's nitpicking.

Anyway, while still on the topic of making badges, is Kinso making Misty, Tracey and Sakura work to weld the badges themselves something he made up on his own? Because while I suppose it does make sense, does this mean he makes all of the gym leaders in the region do work for him in order to get the badges, or was just this a one-time thing for some reason? I'm sure they don't mind in the long-run, but I don't think the guy injures his leg so often that he demands them to run a lap around the mountain before they use tools and machinery they probably don't really know how to handle to make them. I suppose if it was just this one-time thing because he was injured, I'd let it pass, but it's just hard to tell whether the guy wanted to teach Misty a lesson, or if he's just so grumpy and getting old that he felt like making them do it.

http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b633/lilbird92/bb1f9ae1-74a3-41ef-9294-92700e522cf6_zps0ffa5af2.png
“Damn rotten kids and their sense of entitlement!”

I would comment on Sakura making her appearance here, but I honestly don't remember her very well as a character. All I know is she and Misty became friends in Johto, but over what and why, I can't say (and I could always look her up on Bulbapedia, but I don't feel she's worth researching). I personally don't find her battling skills that impressive here, especially since the Poochyena and Zigzagoon that the two thieves owned didn't look like they were well-trained in the first place. Her Espeon also seems to not have that great of a moveset (that was shown), as she ordered it on-screen to use simple moves when I know that an Espeon has some good special attack. Against the Poochyena, I can understand, but against Corsola, no. Corsola could've probably won, or at least stood its ground against Espeon longer had Misty not seemed to have held back with it. I know Corsola can do better than that.

That disappoints me.

So overall, I find this a mediocre episode. The interesting points were of some good insight as to how the gym system works, but we didn't see Kinso do anything except stand around giving orders, his Feraligatr did absolutely nothing, the thievery was just something slapped on to give some kind of conflict, and Psyduck's gag ended up going nowhere. I also found his Disable and Confusion to be not as impressive as the series in the past exaggerated it to be. I honestly look forward to when he does fight, but when it falls short for me, it makes me sad. At least the baffled looks of on-goers who have apparently never seen a Psyduck fight have remained, even if it raises a brow or two.

Oh, and Misty, a “few years” is incorrect, and everyone knows it. Tracey's only been there for maybe a year at best, because I doubt it took you, Brock, and Ash “a few years” to travel through Johto. I blame real time.

Personally like i said before i thought "Blue Badge of Courage" was amazing episode. It was fun seeing Misty with Tracey help trying to teach Psyduck swim and become more competent pokemon. Driving her crazy and putting in lot of hiilarious, awkward situations. Infront of others like Sakura or craftman Kinso.

It was great to see Misty reuniting with her best female friend Sakura. Seeing their friendship evolving having meaningful battle which both holded special to their heart sharing badges(which was pretty sweet serving as reminder to strong relationship they have), had their girly talks, exchanged experiences and together did various chores and tasks imposed on them by old man to make badhges for Cerulean gym .

Making it all that more amusing to see Misty all stunned and initimidated by overwhelming work with Sakura and Tracey giving her support like real friends would do. Or her irritation at Psyduck who brought her more trouble than help.

Nevertheess this episode provided interesting info to see from where gym badges come from and what is whole process behind making them. Coming of as very demanding and stressful job.

Although i do wish whole effort from Misty side in making Psyduck more friendly with water brought some fruits on table. Because by Misty learning how to understand what bothers him and her pokemon feelings unlocking its full potential by learning to battle and swim. Would be excellent groundwork for some importasnt development in Misty becoming stronger, more knowledgeable trainer. Big step forward in coming closer toward becoming water master if eventually in future she leaves her post to make more groundbreaking steps entering tournaments, learning from other water experts on high positions in obtaining such title.

Misty herself showed to lack authority and tendency to give up due to somewhat impulsive nature with Psyduck showing she still has many things to be developed at.

p.s. Oh how i miss pokemon chronicles. I really do.

They were such fresh and original break from main pokemon anime. Giving us chance to enjoy in personalities, entertaining quirks and spats from other characters beside Ash and replaced main characters, rivals who are unfortunately no longer around(like Misty,Tracey, Gary etc) in main show because "new eye candy is needed for every gen rather than investing in succesful, older ones going forward".

Continuation of their lives, character development and working on improving as persons facing their flaws and struggles developing new interesting sides to their characters. Forging their skills as pokemon trainers becoming stronger, working on their dreams and finding themselves in all kind of funny, enjoyable situations as various adventures waits for them.,

Pokemon chronicles made pokemon world feel closer and connected bringing depth and more variety to anime as whole. What shame that we dont get this anymore focusing on several new, but older, at this pint basically new characters to young kids but as well who has so much appeal and unused potential to do more.

Im not sure why you think this episodes aren't considered canon?

Pokemon chronicles were 90% canon taking place and having other important characters bewside Ash getting development and going on adventures in same universe and timeline.
Just as main pokemon anime does.

This was proved several times. Such as episode "Grating Spaces!" in Battle Frontier bringing up whole issue with Pewter gym and Brock mother Lola wanting to decorate it with kitsch details turning in water pokemon gym.

His brother Forest wanting to become gym leader and whole encouragement and assurence Brock established in chronicle episode "Family that Battles Together, Stays Together!".

Episodes "Princess and Togepi" or "Togepi Mirage" when Misty visited Ash and Brock in Hoenn continued on events which happened in chronicles. About her saving gym from being shut down and obtaining Gyarados. Showing it in those episodes and how she in meantime developed better bond with him teaching it flamethrower.

Episodes focused on Gary like "Putting the Air in Aerodactyl" sticks with his desire to follow grandfather footsteps in becoming recognized researcher applying his newly obtained skills and knowledge in emergency situations. Etc.

Granted there were some conflits between main and and this side episodes such as: "Training Daze!" which implies Jessie and James never met each other before joining TR organization. Main show refutes that with Jessie and James being good friends long before they even joined criminal group.

But in most cases side episodes were in line with events happening in main series. Along with changes to characters and their lives chronicles established being brought up and followed upon later through regular episodes in Hoenn saga.

In reality English dub caused too much confusion and incorrect information circulating around deviating at times from original Japanese version. To the poiint of original message and what plot or characters saying was completely changed; giving to inexperienced viewer entirely different picture of what happened in some cases in chronicles.

Like in:
Ill put spoiler tag for those who didnt watched it yet:

"Oaknapped!" where in dub its said how prof. Oak planned to set up security system wanting that Tracey and Ritchie appear on some show. While in original version Oak tells them why he was kidnapped by TR because of his knowledge about pokerus with DJ Mary appearing and heading with them toward Pallet.

Or in "Date with Delcatty!" where in original version Misty declines going on date with Georgio because of liking someone else, Dub omitted that.
As well at end of episode in dub saying how "she found calling as gym leader". But in original version instead she complains about sisters irrresponsibility saying how they are useless and has no choice but to stay there for time being, revealing how family reasons were motive behind staying there.

But in general aside from few questionable situations chronicles were definitely canon.

Who knew that being a gym leader was such a painstaking job? ashamed to admit i never even gave it much thought about how the gym badges got made but found it really neat to see all the effort that goes into making them, definitely gave some more weight to the trainer winning the badge for me after seeing the journey those badges had been on. Pretty cool to have Sakura in the episode, nice to know they dont just plant these characters in the show and just forget about them once the original episode has been done with. The battle for the badge was a little short lived for my liking, with all the experience Misty gained on her travels with Ash and Brock i hoped she would put up a better battle than that, though i guess we'd have missed out on the meat of the episode which was the badges themselves, or the episode would have been like 10 minutes longer than they had time for so i suppose they had to compromise somewhere.

and finally, Psyduck as awesome as always, man i miss that guy in the anime. Always been one of my fave pokemon from travelling companions.
