~* The Digital Art Club

~* Welcome to the club where everything is about art. Here you can learn how to use programs such as Photoshop or GIMP; how to make banners, avatars, or userbars; and how to edit photographs. You can also participate in our weekly contests to show off your art, or just discuss anything art related. Enjoy!

~* In order to join, please fill out the joining application (obviously) completely and post it in the thread. As long as you fill out the form completely and honestly, you'll be accepted into the club. Therefore, any member can accept anyone's application to join.
Username/Nickname:
Some examples of your art:
How long have you been making digital art?:
Have you read all of the rules?:

~* Like any other club, there are rules that have to be followed. Yeah, they usually aren't fun to read, but if you don't you won't be accepted into the club. So please save us the trouble and just read them.

1. All main forum rules apply.
2. All main club section rules apply.
3. Yes, that means NO ONE LINE POSTS. That always seems to be a problem.
4. No ripping banners, avatars, or any art. If you do, you'll be instantly
and permanently BANNED.
5. No trash talking other people's art. You don't have to say it's absolutely
perfect even if it isn't, but don't be downright rude.
6. Break a rule, and you'll get a strike. Get three strikes, and you'll be
banned for two weeks. Get three more, and you'll be banned for good.
7. To be sure that you've read the rules, when you fill out the joining
application you must respond to the question "Have you read the rules?"
by saying "Yessir Mister Rains".

~* Every week the club will hold contests for certain types of digital art: banners, userbars, avatars, and wallpapers. In these contests, you will be given an image or a topic to make art out of, and the best result will win. There will be judges assigned for each type of contest, so a judge will still be able to participate in certain contests. More information about contests will come when more members join the club.

~* Owner: Flurried Rains
~* Co Owners:
~* Members: Frozen, Lil Crickee (Crickee), PurpleMew (Nick), interstellas, Ash^_^, Takaru, cheekychimp, m!ss p!nk, Dehydrated, Mr. Joker, Plusle+Minun, Whale55, Junpearl63

~* What program do you use to make your digital art?

None yet, but it shouldn't be THAT hard to get in a club like this. :3

How long have you been making digital art?: About a year. I first began making absolute ****. I like to think I've improved.
Have you read all of the rules?: Not really but I'm guessing its the general sppf rules? You don't seem like the sort of irritating twerp to have some secret code word. Plus I'm tired, tipsy and eating leftover chinese so I really can't be bothered to read.

I do want to join though.

EDIT: Use any picture I make for the club art seriously I don't mind just give credit. It'd be great if every member used someone elses artwork in there sig so that everyone gets some of there work out there.

Yayy! Someone posted! Although I do have to tell you that I am an irritating twerp with secret code word. In my past experiences I've had too many noobs who don't know anything about rules and go ahead with spamming and one-lining. But it is the general SPPf rules, except it just explains how striking and all of that, so you're fine. And I like a lot of you're art too! May I ask where you get your Avatar images from? The only ones that I can find are too childish for me. xD.

I get my Avatar images from the Avatar Wiki or just google around. I think I once took a screenshot from an Avatar video I was watching online.

Bahaha okay I accepted you anyway but thanks. :P. And thanks for that, I'll be looking around the Avatar Wiki for a good picture now. ^_^. Well. I just made another banner, which is in my signature. And I learned some more techniques in photoshop by doing so. Don't know what to talk about until some more members join and we can start some contests. GAHH. Come join people!

Yay for another member! Welcome Frozen, like I've said before I really like the banner with the girl(?) blowing bubbles. And I just made the code thing-a-majigger Yessir Mister Rains because that's all my stupid brain could think of at the time and I figured it didn't matter much. I've been spending the day looking at tutorials and renders on Planet Renders, and finally decided to make a newbie post there. :P

Heh, thanks Flurried (FR? Rains? Rainy? Note to self: Think of decent nickname for Flurried Rains :b).
Anyway, yeah, so far as I know the girl in that particular tag/sig/banner whatever you wanna call it is a girl, although it was just a random stock I found on Google. x)
I have like, 4 posts on PR. It's a decent forum I guess, but I just never get around to posting there. I only really visit here and one other forum at all, and then I only visit like, two threads here. >_<

Yeah, most people just call me Flurried or FR... but anything is fine really, as long as I can tell you are talking about me. xD. And I just wanna get enough posts on Planet Renders so I can request renders that I can't cut there, if I ever get around to that. Huh. I was hoping more people would join this club quickly so we could start contests, maybe I should make a slight comment in the "Rate The Signature Above You" thread when I rate somebody's banner or whatever. I never saw anything in the rules that says you can't advertise. :D

I'm going to call you... Rainy. :> I can see that that might be handy. The only other reason I would join it is because of the vast number of tutorials, C4D, stocks etc. that've been posted by other members, but most of that stuff can be found on deviantART anyway, so I don't usually go there.
As for advertising a few obnoxious plugs can't do any harm amirite? ^__^

Okay then, Rainy it is lol. And it is useful, I just used another tutorial to make my newest banner (the one in my signature). Although I never thought of looking on deviantART for C4D's or tutorials. Well that might help a bit lol, I can never find cubed C4D's or whatever they are called. Oh yeah, I ended up telling people to join this club in the Rate the Signature Above You thread. >:D

It's alright I guess, but OH MY GOD OVERSATURATION! The colours are pretty cool I guess, but they're waay oversaturated, and the background is too overwhelming. It lack lighting, flow. It is pretty, but it's far from perfect.
Also if I ever see anyone in this club use a pixel font I might cry. ;__; They're an abomination. D:

Yeah I guess it is oversaturated, although I don't really know why. I never raised saturation or anything, could a gradient map do that or something? *shrugs*. And I like pixel fonts, but I did make it too big in this one. I figured it would be fine since it's kinda faded.

When was Photoshop 7 made? I don't know all of the different versions and all of that stuff. Right now I have CS3 so I do all of my stuff in there. OH! And I'm going to be getting a tablet soon! I'm so freaking excited, lol. They are not only fun, but they make so many things so much easier. And hmm. Maybe I should have named this the Graphics Club, then more people would recognize it. >_<.

Welcome to the club Nick! Just wanna say I REALLY like your style in all of those threads. :3. Oh and I'm thinking about entering one of those contests in your signature; probably the digital media one because I'm not too good at spriting, or possibly the fan art one.

And I completely forgot about discussion questions lol, I guess I'll add that in to the first post. But I've already said my answer to the question is CS3, although I might be getting CS4 soon from a friend.

@Rainy: Oh, I forgot to answer this earlier: Yeah, Gradient Maps definitely could cause over saturation, especially if you have several different colours etc. on high opacity, or Normal blending more.
With regards to pixel fonts, they're acceptable sometimes, but generally they look very.. newbish, and rarely complement the flow, or the effects in the signature. Text can make or break a signature if not done right. For one it should always, always be placed using the Rule of Thirds (this is like, the no. 1 most important rule when it comes to Signature making), and it should fit the style of the image. This (http://jpapa.deviantart.com/art/SIgnature-text-tutorial-91177085)and this (http://jugga-lizzle.deviantart.com/art/Signature-texting-tutorial-62234256)are two pretty decent looking tutorials (I haven't actually read them, but they sound like they know what they're doing) :b.
Anyway, yeah, I'm no text expert myself, but that's just my two pence.

Yeah I know the rule of thirds from my Digital Video and Photoshop classes. I'll have to watch out for gradient maps now, thanks for that. :3. I'll also try to stay away from pixel fonts for a bit too, as I use that font a bit much as well. Oh and I just realized that there is already a contest in the Digital Media section (which I recently only discovered a couple days ago LOL), so I'll have to think of ways to spice up the contests here and make them different. Although I have time for that, we need a bit more members before we start contests.

Haha thanks ^^; I try to learn new styles and then edit and mess with them, I prefer to mess with colour the most though because you gotta' love colour manipulation ;] I lookk forward to your entry/entries.

What program do you use to make your digital art?

I used GIMP 2.6 for most of my art but got Photosop CS4E a couple months ago and have been using that more but I still use GIMP for different bits I haven't learnt to do in PS yet. c:

;D Gradient Maps are wonderful for colouring, and you can do some really cool stuff with them. I like Solid Colour layers too, I used them in my current sig, and it looks tasty (in my humble opinion of couse! xD)
I looked at that competition too, but it looks pretty lame to be honest. I don't like being restricted to their crappy sizes, I'd rather just have a range so you can choose your own. And the themes aren't open enough either.. I like there to be a variaty in the entries, you know? :/

Yeah color manip. is always fun, although I always end up making stuff too monochromatic and I start over. I'm probably going to hold off a bit until I enter something into the contest though, I wanna get a bit better at Photoshop stuff and wait until I get my tablet (most likely tomorrow!! :3). I still have a couple of days anyway.

Yeah, I just made another banner and I used a bunch of gradient maps in it. I'm always tempted to leave them exactly as they are at 100% opacity and normal blending options because they look kind of trippy. :3. And by Solid Color layer do you mean making a layer completely one color and then dropping the opacity and that stuff? I wasn't sure 'cause I've never heard the term before and I've never seen it in the options or anything. Meh, the competition might not be as open as anything else, but it'll give me something to do, plus the sizes don't bother me too much.

Well now that I've made this banner I kind of wanna work on icons now. I haven't made many of them at all and it would be nice to get better at them lol. The only thing is that I always want to add MORE and MORE and MORE until it gets really messy and disgusting. I have a simplicity problem I think. >_<.

EDIT: Woah ninja'd or something.
Mangaeyes: I don't really understand the Serebii style, it all seems like you make completely different stuff to the rest of the GFX world. A microclimate or something. x) I'm probably not the best person to be giving advice on SPPF banners, because I make more mainstream graphics kinda stuff. From what I can see though, it's all essentially photomanip. In that case don't be afraid to some colours stand out more to achieve the affect you want, try and add lighting and stuff, and ***** textures. :D

I like that sig, Rainy. :3
It's pretty, and the text is much better. I quite like the way it's split up too, it's not cliche, which things like that often are. The colours are omfgpretty too. ;D
Solid Colour layers are in the thingy just above Gradient maps, but that's the general idea, yeah. I writed a tutorial for my current sig (http://digitallyfrozen.deviantart.com/art/Intrinsic-Assassin-Tutorial-133819410) a little while ago, you can have a looksie if you're interesting. :b [/shamelessplug]

My favorites of yours is the first Zuko one and the one with Robin in it (that team something show I forget). Most of your others are wayy over textured (Ike and the Black Parade) and some of the text doesn't really blend in at all and just looks like it was plopped in there (Ike and the Darkness one). The only advice I can really give you is to do a couple more tutorials, that really helped me a lot.

Compare you're style to Frozen's banner's style. And there you go. Also if you look on Planet Renders forums you'll see a lot more mainstream banners.

I can't really think of a way to explain it, manga eyes. If you look at my signatures they're more effecty and stuff, where as yours are a lot plainer in that respect. The styles are just completely different.
And you all call your signatures banners for some reason I cannot fathom. >__>

I can't really think of a way to explain it, manga eyes. If you look at my signatures they're more effecty and stuff, where as yours are a lot plainer in that respect. The styles are just completely different.
And you all call your signatures banners for some reason I cannot fathom. >__>

And Rainy, I'm still jealous of your tablet, you should send it to me or something! xD
(I watched and stuff on you dA. :>)

I just call signatures banners now because when I first called them signatures here everyone got confused. So now I just kind of do both. :3. And I'm playing with my tablet now. It's so much fun. Now I just gotta find a good render to make a signature with. >:]

Yayy welcome Suicune Lover! :3. Have you looked at any tutorials on Planet Renders or deviantArt? Those have really helped me out quite a lot, although I forgot how I first started out with making banners. If you are wondering where to start you can either take a stock image or an abstract render (from Planet Renders) and place it on a black (or any color really, I just use black most of the time) canvas and blur it/use blending options, OR you could take the original render you want to put in, duplicate it, and use the smudge tool to smudge over the whole canvas (that's what I did with the Star Wars banner). You could also just use brushes for textures depending on what type of style you are going for. Don't know if you understand all that or not, I'm not familiar with GIMP. Oh right, you might need to look for GIMP tutorials then. >_<. Tell me if you have any questions on that much, and then I could try to teach a bit more; although tutorials might be the best way to go, I've never really taught this to anyone before.

EDIT: Oh, and about the "Yessir Mister Rains" thing, it's better if they read the rules at all and break them rather than ignore them completely.

In the search feature type in "signature tutorial". People just make images of their tutorials and put them up there. Hope that helps you out. :3. If you need something to put in your signature/banner you can find a lot of images with transparent backgrounds on Planet Renders, you just have to join so you can get them.

In my boredom of the last day of summer vacation, I made two banners (one of which is in my signature currently) and started trying to make icons. I've made three so far, and wanna see how I did. So yeah, here they are. :D

I don't really understand icons, but these seem nice. They're simple and clean, not too complex etc. The cat one is a little oversaturated, perhaps, but it's alright.

Okay. Serebii is going very slowly so I'm not going to bother quoting.

@interstellas OMG I love your current signature, especially the text (like Frozen said). Welcome to the club! And thanks for reading the rules. :3

@Frozen Well the cat is like that because of the rainbow pattern overlay I put on it. It was really saturated at first but I put a black and white gradient map over it so I could bring it down a bit, but I still wanted the rainbow to show. :l. And if you haven't thought of any ideas maybe you should try some icons. :P

@mangaeyes Hey! I never said I hated your stuff, in fact, I said I really liked a few of them, however some of them were ruined by poorly placed text yadda yadda. Here's what I would suggest for you (and I just recently got most of this advice from my digital art thread):

1. Focus on the render more than the text (Frozen also told me this before). The render should stand out much more and the text should just be a minimal detail. You can use bigger text if you want to, as long as it doesn't take away from the render itself and flows with the banner. There were some text tutorials that Frozen showed me at the top of the page that you could look at. If that doesn't help avoid using text at all for a while.

2. When using text, DON'T use shadows or blending options (I have been guilty of this, but now I avoid it as much as possible).

3. Try darkening the outside edges of the signature around the main render so it stands out and you have a focal point. Also, create a light source in your render (Filter > Render > Lighting if you use Photoshop).

4. Some of your images aren't really high quality either, and it definitely makes the whole image look wrong (your first two examples).

5. FINALLY. Rather than using textures for backgrounds try duplicating the main render and smudging it across the whole canvas (you might have to duplicate the render multiple times). After that you can add in textures for backgrounds if you want, but personally I don't use them at all. I just use abstract renders.

Hopefully that helped. >_<.

Thank you and I'm happy to be here.

Text is a problem with everyone. I honestly ADMIT that it is (and can be) my weakness when it comes to designing over with Photoshop. First off, when you use text, make sure that you select the right font, the right type-size and you arrange it in a way that doesn't make the graphic scattered.

Ask yourself if you want the type to be the focus point or no. If not, make it a little less noticable-- but nice and clean. I'd say a little more buuuut I'm on my way to school. xD

I take a Commericial Art tech school. It's really nice. My Photoshop skills have been improving there and what makes my life easy when I learn there, my art teacher is Adobe Certified. ^_^ Joy~

Oooh that is so cool! I want to do that when I get into college or something, because doing Photoshop as a class would be AWESOME. I did it last year in freshman year at high school because I go to a school that focuses on Communications, and I think I'm taking a class like it this year and next year as well. Although I'm not exactly sure. :l

I don't think I'll bother with text anymore lol.

The problem with that image is that I can hardly see what you did with it. Basically the whole background is white and there are a few streaks of light that come across Avril. So the image is a bit to bright. Fiddle around with the lighting settings (you can use "Apply Image" to make your current finished product show up when selected on a new layer, so you can do the lighting settings on that layer and then reduce the opacity if the light is too bright) and see what happens. Oh and you can try some gradient maps too, here is a tutorial I did that helped me A LOT (I made the Star Wars banner and Mirror's Edge banner of mine with it).

@Ash^_^ Welcome to the club! I like some of your banners, especially the second example you gave, but I think the first example is way too messy. If you used Blending Options on the render on that one (not sure if you did that or if you just brushed over the render), I would have duplicated the layer more so the image stood out. The blue one is my favourite. It's very clean, and fresh. The text works well as a decoration, and the stock is nice. The rest are nice, but the middle is superior. The yellow one is nice too, though.

I wouldn't mind going into art as a career, only I'd be a starving artist and I'm not that great at it yet (although if I take classes for it I'd get better obviously). Most of the things I want to do would end up with me starving... singing, writing, acting, being an artist, teaching. *sigh*. And I wouldn't take Art as a carreer. It has too many strings attached. If you get Artist's Block or something your cash flow stops dead. And you don't earn any money. Ooh Frozen I think that does look a lot better, however now the Ivysaur looks kind of darkish. I kind of like it that way though. :3. I just made another banner, since I haven't made one in a couple of days. It's of the lovely Katy Perry. :D

Not really sure how I feel about this one. =/

Yeah, I literally spammed the dodge and burn tools on her to try and make the lighting really powerful. The rest of the image is a little bit meh, so I wanted to make the lighting really leap out at the looker onner. I think I did it pretty good. I decided I'd make it kinda 'sun through the clouds' too, because it was a little lifeless before. The pink makes it feel kind of sunset/twilighty now. I likes it. :3

and with this new one.. Meh, I don't really like it. One thing that irks me about it is the lack of depth. Blur the background a bit, because at the moment there is no established focal. Depth is really important, and it's kinda... missing here. I don't particularly like your C4D use either. Generally it's best to try and achieve some kind of flow, rather than just slapping them on, you know?

And I know this banner isn't that great. I really wanted to do a Katy Perry banner because I haven't before, but the Planet Renders renders of her are kind of obnoxious to use. I just tried it out anyway. I tried putting flow in with the C4D's, but I wasn't really sure where it should've gone on this one. :/. Also, now I know that blurring adds depth. :3

I dunno, but having a looksie at this (http://iceydragon11.deviantart.com/art/Photoshop-Sig-Making-Basics-109134683)might help. I made it ages ago, but it still explains stuff like depth and flow pretty well. Render choice is pretty important when it comes to flowing and stuff. :3

Mmk, here's another one I made today. :3. I have nothing else to do but Photoshop at the moment.

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/Flurried/ArticunoFlurried.png

I focused a lot more on the depth, because that's my main problem. I don't think the flow was good in the last one because (like you said in the tutorial you showed me) it was one of those renders that don't have much action in them. I was a bit worried about the flow in this Articuno one, because I had brushed in lines and put them on overlay but eventually it got harder and harder to see them. Tell me what you think about it.

EDIT: Gahh, looking at it on here now makes me not like it. :l

EDIT TWO: Touched it up a bit and had fun with the colors. :3

EDIT: It looks much better. :D. Although the text is a bit hard to read. Actually I don't know if I like it better or not. :l

I love the set up but use a different type for it and place the text on your right side. Plus, I see that the wing on the right is blury for some reason. How about you blend the wings in with texture? Don't blur it at all because it'll ruin it. >_<;

Lol, I'll try and fix it later maybe, but right now I have to do my Journalism story and I have to email it in by tomorrow (even though it's a three day weekend. D:). However I think the text is fine where it is, if I placed it on the right I think it would look awkward (if I'm following the rule of thirds). For me, it works having it next to the head (and the focal point) because then people can notice both the head and the text without being drawn to two different parts of the signature.

Creepy Hitler icon though. :P

EDIT: I just made another banner for my shipping fic about Zuko and Jet. :3. I wanted to make another banner that would only be one image in case I use it in my signature. However the fan art I can find doesn't really have flow to it, so this one is kind of like a wallpaper in a small banner size. xD. Don't know if I will actually use it, but here it is. It was a biatch to cut out since it was a drawing. D:

Because all I do is go into Filter>Render>Lighting effects and do that there. Maybe I cancelled it out because I darkened everything but their faces. >_<. I might try putting in an effect later. :3

@interstellas FINEEE. I'll change the text to the banner. But it will make me cry. lykesrsly. Don't know when I will get to it, since I promised the GPX+ Fan Club that I'd go on a clicking spree (I've been very lazy with that since I much prefer to Photoshop shiz and write shiz), and I have homework to do as well (damn Physics and Journalism :U). Let's be honest, who wouldn't marry me? I'm too attractive to turn down! ;D But yeah, generally I do lighting more complicated and betterer. First I get me a soft 45pxish brush, and with a light colour (from the image) I brush on where I want the highlights. Then I take a similar sized brush and brush on where I want it to shine (as in where it's moving across from the light souce). Both them on Colour Dodge and lower the opacity till it looks good. Then I take a big brush with the same colour and make the light source, adjusting opacity as needed. THEN I do a Lighting Effects layer because it makes it look more realistic. Then I play with dodge and burn as needed. :>

I forgot to put a border on it though. *facepalm*. That table thing is meant to be like a curtain thing flowing around Zuko, but the stuff behind Zuko is hardly visible now. It was just my attempt at adding flow. :P. But thankyeess. :D. I'm currently trying to find a good Lady GaGa image to put in a banner. Why is it that out of all of the music I like only the females are popular enough to get rendered? Maybe they're just the ones that look good (Fall Out Boy LOLz). OMG. @mangaeyes Too completely honest, it doesn't look like you followed any of my advice or anyone else's advice. I said that you should have kept the text smaller/avoid major blending options in my post, and that text tutorial has taught me a lot about text. Did you read the whole thing? Maybe you should try having one main image as your focal point, rather than a whole band in that one. Plus the lighting in that one is all over the place. Try taking a look at some more tutorials or something. :l

It's still Fall Out Boy, so I liked it anyway. :D. I gave up on trying to make a signature of them because I can never find a good picture of the band and I prefer having one subject to work with anyway. Although I want to make something that says "they say the captain goes down with the ship, so when the world ends will God go down with it?" because I love that line.

:O!! Lady GaGa. I love her so much, as I've probably said many, many times before, although maybe not in this thread. I just made a signature with her in it because I absolutely loved her VMA performance and I actually found good quality pictures of it today. I like that banner of yours, although she looks very orange. :P

And here's the Lady GaGa one I just mentioned. I gotta go organize my signature now so I can put it in...

Ahh thanks and that was the colouring I was going for :] I love that banner! It's a little dark for my liking, maybe add some more light in it and make the text stand out a little more.

Oh wow. It's really cute. ^_^ I love the colouring, it's all bright and happy. :D

Well I did mine and... yeah. Thats my entry.

Thanks :} and the way you said "That's my entry" seems you think it isn't so good :'[ When I went over to the WBC I was like woah! There goes my chance of winning.

Manageyes there is no reason why you can't be as good as anyone else. Everything just takes practice and for you to experiment with different medias.

@Rainy: Katy Perry looks waay oversaturated, and there are too many focals. I generally don't like it when images (particularly faces) are obvious in the background. The focal of a piece should be just that. The rest should be subtly blurred, and generally the focal benifits from a little bit of a sharpen. Also lighting needs to be in the top right corner desperately. It'd make it much more alive.

@stelar: Your name is too long, so this is your new one. :3 But yeah, it's clean and simple. My only grudge with this is that it's too similar to your other pieces. It doesn't have it's own individual flair, you know?

@mangaeyes: Aye, it's all about practice, practice, practice. Once you nail the basics, and get your own styles under your belt things start to improve much faster. It's all about experimenting to discover what's right for you. :>

What is your favorite kind of Digital Art and why?
Signatures. I find them interesting to design, and they're not too time consuming, and yet at the same time you can generally find a way to improve it when you come back to it. The beauty of signatures is that there's always something that can change, and small changes can make the world of difference.

Lol Frozen, I avoided uploading the Katy Perry sig because of that and I never felt like changing it. So I just uploaded it as it was and dealt with it. :D. I like that sig you made, although I couldn't really tell what the image actually was for a while. I thought it was a robot or something and then I figured out that it was a face. Other than that, you pull off the simplicity of a blank background very well. :3.

Oh and PurpleMew, thank you!! :D. I would go in and lighten up a bit but I'm afraid I'd most likely screw up the lighting.

EDIT: Oh and mangaeyes, I really don't know what else to tell you. I've commented on all of your stuff before, given you the tips I thought would help, and all that I can do basically. Show me something new and I can help you out a bit more. I really think giving tutorials another chance would be good, since that's what really stepped up my Photoshop skills. :P

:O. I wanna try to make a sprite banner eventually. Yours look really cool. Meh, maybe some day, or after I eat my brother's birthday cake. :3. Out of my boredom today I went back onto an old forum I used to post on because I remembered that they had amazing artists and stuff. Turns out that most of 'em are either gone, or I just thought they were really good because I sucked back then. Anyway, I am planning on entering their Signature Of The Month competition, and the theme is black and white. HELP ME WITH MINE. I want to win really badly. :D. Here it is (yes, more Lady GaGa):

EDIT: Another banner I just made, featuring Roger and Mimi from Rent. :D

When creating digital art, do you prefer to work with real life subjects, anime/manga/cartoon subjects, or video game subjects?
Personally, I prefer real life subjects at the moment. However I go through phases I guess. For a while I had an anime phase (even though I don't even watch anime or anything, I just used them a lot) and then I also used to use video game stuff a while ago. Now I just tend to stick with real life stuff because it's what I relate to the most. I don't play many video games anymore, so I never use video game renders and like I said before I don't watch anime, so the only stuff I'll use related to that is Pokemon stuff. With real life stuff I can do signatures with my favorite music in it (:3), use stuff from movies, etc. Plus I hate searching for video game/anime stuff, it gets obnoxious after a while, since I don't know exactly what I'm looking for.

I don't really have a single preference...as you can see, for me, it ranges from album mascots to magpies to TV characters. They are all, of course, things that interest me. I find pictures of celebrities a little more interesting because many photos of them are in a certain pose or certain style which can help the image flow. except lady gaga coz she sucks

Only joking.

I love the black and white theme, it really suits the image but I dunno like you said it seems to be missing something, I dunno some text maybe. On the second banner the image seems blurry and the text feels out of place.

I like to use people, animals and natural formes the most but can go with cartoon/anime characters easily aswell. I prefer natural images because I can easily express certain part more than say video game images.

I am working on some icons for HGSS and Lady Gaga.

It depends on what my mood is. I like using real subjects a lot more though. It usually involves someone Asian. xD Hah, yeah. Still it does depend on my mood anyway. I lost my interest with anime, I don't play much video games either so. Yeah.

You see.. I would but: A) I don't want to join a forum for Zelda when I don't have any interest in Zelda at all. B) I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do for two (possibly three) other SOTW competitions as well as do homework. :3. C) I'm too lazy to register. :]

Oh and I just joined this forum that's basically for digital art and stuff (although they did just add a gaming section) because that's what I want to focus on right now and I'm really only posting on this forums for this thread, the Gay/Lesbian Alliance, and the GPX+ Fan Club (which I'm not even interested in anymore). Wow, that was a run-on. BUT ANYWAY, I joined this forum called Digital Remix and everyone there is amazingly good at making signatures (or tags as they sometimes call them). It's very, very intimidating. Hopefully I can get a lot better there though, I'm thinking that all of the beastly signatures will be inspirational. :]

Welcome to the club!! A lot of your signatures kind of remind me of what I used to do until I started leaning towards the mainstream stuff, and makes me kind of nostalgic. :3. My favorite of yours would have to be your current signature though, I think in some of the signatures in your link you over use the text effect in the background. But anyway, HELLO! :]

Yeah I noticed that looking back at it, but I was too lazy to do it since I hadn't started my homework at all and blah, blah, blah. I think the text would look better if it were blurred, but I like it as it is. :3. I don't know where else I'd put it in this signature to be honest. But why are the colors horrible? You mean it is too saturated? Maybe I deleted the black and white gradient map instead of lowering the opacity when I saved the colored version or something, I don't know. D:

Frozen
23rd September 2009, 9:50 PM
They just really don't match. Massive contrast, way too saturated. They really pull the eyes off the focal, which is never a good thing. Perhaps some softer colours more in fitting with the theme.
And I meant blur the background, not the text, my bad. Depth, Kitten, DEPTH!

Personally, it all depends on what you're doing to the banner you are making. There is some cases where banners should have depth just because how it looks. And there is some cases where banners should not have depth just because it has a canvas look. Thats what I honestly think.

You?

Do you think all banners should have depth or no?
Pretty much. It's a basic technique that adds a lot to an image. It's well worth doing 99% of the time. Done well it can make a massive difference.

ALSO, did my post where I posted that .PSD show up? It wasn't there according to the thread view thing, but I could see it when I was actually inside the thread. :x

No. All rules to art have exceptions. :]

Yeah it is there Frozen, I don't know what the purpose of posting a PSD file is though. :3. Here is a link to the tutorial then Frozen. :P. I didn't really use the whole tutorial once it got to the pen tool bit (which I know now how to use) but I just got the concept from it.

Well I guess that is true. Maybe I'll take a look at that then, since I was asking you to make a tutorial for it. :3. I just tried out drawing something in Photoshop to make into a signature, because I came up with the idea of this character while I was bored in Algebra II. xD. I know I'm going to get yelled at for the text being too distracting, but I like it! I hope everyone can get what the drawing is... anyway, here is the signature:

WHY FLURRY RAINS? I got the word "flurry" from a song and purposely changed it to "flurried" because I liked it better. Oh wait, you're saying furry? Doesn't really make sense since rain can't be furry but WHATEVER. And I don't mind the image being creepy. In fact, I like him creepy. :3

Takaru I like this sig but I think that the border is wayy too distracting. The light pink of the text/border doesn't match any other color in the sig either. Other than that, the only problem is that there isn't much depth. But that might be because it's more of a Serebii style banner, I dunno.

I like it, however it lacks lighting and the text needs work. Try to figure out where the light is coming from, in this case it's coming from the top left corner I believe, and then use the dodge tool over there. In the opposite corner you should use the burn tool as well. You can also create a new layer, Image > Apply Image, and then do Filter > Render > Lighting Effects to add in lighting. It will really incorporate your image into the signature a lot. With the text, try to make it follow the flow of the signature rather than slapping it on there and making it diagonal. In this case, since there isn't much flow, you could place it along the edge of the red heart behind it or just have it horizontal. There was a text tutorial a couple pages back that Frozen posted, I'll post the link again if you want it.

Text Tutorial Two (http://jugga-lizzle.deviantart.com/art/Signature-texting-tutorial-62234256)

These mainly apply to more mainstream banners but I think they make sense no matter what style you are using. If you have any questions just ask, although I'm not great with text myself. You could also look at other tutorials on deviantArt, although they will probably teach you how to make mainstream banners for the most part, but you can still get tips from them and learn how to use different tools.

teehee. Sorry about that. But I still think it is. Can we see the original image to compare it to for the coloring? It might help. :]

I think I'm going to open an art shop again, but add in some rules so I don't get stupid requests like I did before so I kept procrastinating. Also I just joined this graphics forum yesterday (the one I joined before was horribly inactive) and it is amazing! It's really active and there are a bunch of tutorials and other resources to use. I really like the signature, however the only problem with it is the faded words saying "we let" or something that are right over his face. It takes away from the focal and my eyes are drawn to the text rather than his face. I personally don't know where I'd put the font for this one, since the image is so large and the faded text kind of ruins the flow. I can see the green stripes in the background on a diagonal, but I think the text should either be on a diagonal too or have a motion blue that makes it look like it is moving that way so it fits with the flow. I love the coloration of the sig though. And the lighting is pretty good as well.

Very true. When I saw the image, I was like really happy because the picture look so nice, I just hate the quality of it. It's too light and it needed some darks. So I messed with it until it looks right.

That one is my favourite out of all of them. It's very well balanced, you have an amazing focus point. I also see good composition and the structure of it is well done. What made it weak is the typography. The thing is, it's not readable, and it should be a little brighter. But not too bright that the type will end up more as a focus point. Also, I agree, I notice that too. Text has always been a trouble for me, but I'm not sure why... I mean, it should be simple, right? (or, from your experience, would you say it's one of those "make it or break it" things?) Thanks for the tip though! I might try it with a similar banner.

Thanks~ I made it by mixing a paper-like texture with the original images...and quite a lot of other minor things to spruce it up. I tried to make it look like some of my mother's cardstock scrapbooking paper as much as I knew how. ^^;

What program do you use to make your digital art?
I use a combination of both Paint.NET and Photoshop Elements 7.0. Paint.NET was the veryfirst thing I ever really used...it's been quite faithful to me. XD And GIMP's interface is just screwed in my opinion. =P (not saying that you can't use it, but it's not my taste)

Just wondering, but why use both? What does Paint.NET have that Photoshop Elements 7 doesn't? I agree about GIMP though, that's what I first started out with when I tried spriting probably two years ago. It was quite confusing and I soon gave up. Then I got to high school and learned Photoshop in my Photoshop class (lol, guess that makes sense dunnit?) so that helped a lot. I also had Photoshop Elements 7 for a while, and then eventually got CS3, but so far I haven't noticed any differences tool-wise, which is why I am interested. I might not have noticed differences because I wasn't using as many tools back when I was using Elements but I'd still like to know, since it might have something I can't do in CS3 (although I doubt it, considering the cost of it). Meh. Whatever.

Thanks! I used to work more with Pokemon images since that's what most of my requests were in my first shop, but now I've found that I prefer real life images. Not really sure why though. I like working with sprites as well though, it gives you so much room for effects. :3.

Here's my attempt at larger art. I figured that if I ever wanted to get anywhere with Photoshop, making signatures wouldn't cut it, so I tried something bigger. :]

Lol, Dehydrated, just saw your post as I was previewing this one. Your accepted!! *fireworks, sparklers, the whole shabang*. You have a cool style to your stuff, I like how you worked with the map sprites to the third generation games though, those turned out nice. A lot of your icons seem a bit low quality, and I'd recolor some of them, but for the most part they are pretty good. But did you make that GIMP thing from scratch? 'Cause if you did... *jawdrops*.

AND FINALLY. MISS PINK. Sorry I didn't comment on your banner before, I completely forgot about it. I think it is nice and all but it could use some flashy effects you know? I don't think the red goes well with the pink and stuff either, but I like how you involved the Sneasel sprite in there. :D. SPRITE BANNERS FTW.

I coloured it with watercolours, outlined in pen and scanned it in. I then used GIMP to add a vintage feel to it. I know the text is extremely dull but I think it fits...I didn't want anything to over-power the actual picture.

Tell me what you think! (also sorry if this doesn't count as digital art)

"Beauty" ;P, I forgot to comment before, so I'll just do so now- That banner Silver banner you made looks great! The colors are nice! I normally don't like sprite banners at all, so just think, you must've done a bang-up job. ^^ *bricks self*
And, about this new one you just did, it's got some good effects and all, but I might try placing that wrinkled effect off of Riolu's head. Also, the green seems a bit too overpowering in some parts. But keep up the good work!

*jaws drop* Flurry, that is just such a pwnsome picture you made. 0_0 I love the color tone and the unity of effects you gave it! Brilliant! (lol I'm starting to feel a little intimidated. jk- Aww, come on...for a guy who never took a single Photoshop lesson in his life, you gotta admit I'm alright. =P)

Jun, no one's trying to ignore you, but the way you're sorta shouting for attention isn't good. Sometimes when you're new, some people won't talk as much to you as they would a few others. But if you give it a little time and be friendly, I'll bet you'd be sure to make some nice online buddies. ^^ That's why I like to join only one or two clubs. That way I don't have to spend so much time trying to keep up.
Nice art, btw! I find it difficult to make banners without solid backgrounds. You do a real good job in pulling it off though! (especially in that last one)

Meh. Whatever.
Paint.NET? Well it just has some really cool straightforward effects that you can't normally apply to an image in Photoshop. (at least not that I've noticed) Like a "jitter" tool, a zoom/twist tool, a halftone render tool, better cloud rendering, and the gradients (while not having as many different colors- only two) are easier to see especially if you wanna apply a shiny sort of a look to text. Besides that, it's so much faster to use to get certain effects and it's the only way I can seem to get sharp borders for my banners.
...And of course GIMP sucks. XD (jk)

Thanks! I used to work more with Pokemon images since that's what most of my requests were in my first shop, but now I've found that I prefer real life images. Not really sure why though. I like working with sprites as well though, it gives you so much room for effects. :3.
Yeah...I might try that too sometime. Just to see how I like it of course. And no offense, but sprites are some of the last things I'd wanna put in a banner. =P (everyone has their preferences though)

Edit:

Why certainly. That's digital art if I ever saw it. Nice work! I love to look at drawings used in banners and such, because (when done correctly) it gives the picture a nice touch that would be quite difficult to achieve otherwise. And I think you pulled it off nicely! ^^

Thank you Hydro King! I'm glad you liked it. I like to boost pictures with a few effects if necessary because my scanner makes everything look so washed out and dead (probably just my drawing lol) but I always feel like I'm cheating lol.

SOO MANEH THINGS TO SAYYY.

@Dehydrated: I envy that GIMP thing, I wish I could do abstract stuff like that. I have a tablet and I can't even do that. Well I've actually never tried, but I probably wouldn't be able to. xD

@junpearl63: I really don't know what to say about the banner, since I wouldn't know if anything is wrong with it in the first place. It's not really the style I like and I'm not used to banners without a solid background. The only thing I can say is that it lacks a cool effect, but I don't know if you wanted one or not.

@mangaeyes: I saw that before on deviantArt, I was gonna comment but I didn't really know what to say. The drawing is AMAZING though. I wish I could draw like that soo badly. The only things that I can draw are eyes and stick figures. :D

@Hydro King: Maybe I'll try out Paint.NET sometime then, I don't have any time today though since I got home like an hour ago and I have to go to bed already so whatever. Thanks for the comment though. I find it so funny though, since here everyone loves my stuff, but I'm considered a novice at the a GFX forum I go to. I guess it makes sense since it's a GFX forum, but it's still funny. xD

@Frozen: It looks WAYYY too oversharpened. You like the sharpen tool don't you? Anyway, that's pretty much all I have to say. Maybe the stars in the back could be duplicated and the motion blurred so they look like they are moving towards him. I dunno, just a thought.

BYE EVERYONE.

Well, I'd think you could do all that already on Photoshop CS3... But it might be interesting for you to try. :) Just letting you know though, if you do try it, I got a lot of the things I consider to be nifty in extra plugins supplied at the Paint.NET Forums. And you're welcome! lol It's probably because they're total nerds when it comes to that sort of stuff. At least you're still able to "speak English" to us. Thanks, I appreciate it, Manga! Although it does take me a bit most times, it doesn't take forever to make them. I like trying to make things that don't fit into the mold of most of today's mainstream art. (don't get me wrong, it's really great art, but it's just quite plentiful everywhere) I wanna try new things, experiment on my own a bit and maybe even come up with something like no one's ever seen before. =) That's part of why I joined this club.

Flurried Rains
8th October 2009, 10:02 PM
@Takaru: Lol, I'm so bad at giving people advice on the "Serebii" style of signatures now that I don't make signatures like that anymore. One thing I would say is that Whitney should be more involved with the tag itself. Like maybe if some of the lines behind her came in front of her to create more depth. Right now it seems very flat. I don't really like scan lines either, but whatever. Overall it's pretty good though.

@Hydro King: I usually just cut out the image slowly with the polygonal lasso tool and then duplicate the cut-out image. Then I blur the edges of the cut-out image at the bottom, and set the image on top of it on Overlay. Lower the opacity of the top image to about 70% or so, that way it doesn't look too dark but the edges will be smoother.

@m!ss p!nk: You spelled "New York" incorrectly. Also the red blotches all over the place kind of annoy me. I like the scrapbook feel to it though.

@Mangaeyes: The drawing is very good, the only problem I have with it is the big leaf thing in front of him. It is too transparent personally.

YAYY FOR SUICUNE LOVERRR. :D. The banner is good for a beginner, but it needs a lot of work. I just looked on deviantArt for some tutorials on the basics, but none of them were too good and they mostly used poor grammar. So it is time for me to write a novel! I was thinking about writing a tutorial anyway, since I've never done it before so it would be kind of fun. Well, I might write it, but I dunno. You can look at one Frozen posted on the second page (I think) for now if you like.

EDIT: Screw writing a tutorial. Here is a pretty good one, although the guy's English isn't great. I skimmed it and it's understandable. If you have any questions just ask. Sorry if the very beginning of it makes you feel stupid. xD

http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs32/f/2008/221/b/2/GFX_Beginning_Tutorial_FIX_by_TheInterest.pnghttp://fc02.deviantart.com/fs31/f/2008/221/3/5/GFX_Beginning_Tutorial_Part_2_by_TheInterest.pnght tp://fc04.deviantart.com/fs31/f/2008/221/8/b/GFX_Beginning_Tutorial_Part_3_by_TheInterest.png

So hopefully that will help. For sprite signatures most of this will apply as well, you'll just be duplicating a lot of layers for smudging. You'll also need a lot more flashy effects to pull your eye to the sprite. Mmk, that's it.

I made a new sig. It's weird and thats my purpose. I always appreciate some suggestions. ^^ It comes along with an avi!

The first sig is a little plain, however, I like the focal point of it. It lacks of balance so maybe you could do a little more with it. I admire the display of your text. It fits well and it looks right in that place.

Now the second sig, I like the contrast of it. I don't have a lot to really say with it, the left side is a little messy but the right side is clean. Yeah. ^^'

Flurried Rains
11th October 2009, 1:41 AM
@Dehydrated: Both of the tags seem a bit monotone, which is kind of boring and it is harder to pick out the focal. The focal in the first one is clear since it is rather simple in the first place, but in the second one my eyes are drawn to the blue blob in the center rather than the face that's hidden in there. The only other problems with the first one is that I think the text could be more aligned with the Coke can, and that it is very plain. I like the abstract stuff in the second one a lot though, so that one seems more appealing overall to em.

@Interstellas: LOL. "Let's Go On An Acid Trip." Priceless. I like it a lot, but I don't get why there's office supplies all over the place. And the one other thing is that the orange face isn't cleanly cut off on the right side, and it kind of annoys me since it curves off. xD. Not much to say about the avatar either, it's good. :]

@Interstellas: Lol, you aren't weird. Remember when I showed you the tag with all of the mushrooms in it over AIM? The paper clips are actually growing on my though. They make me think of someone tripping in the middle of school. I dunno. xD

@Dehydrated: I LOVE TEH LINK IN YOUR SIGGEH. xD

@Takaru: First thing I have to say is that I don't like the colored borders. I used to be a fan of them but they really just distract you from the signature itself. When I first looked at the Bugsy tag I was trying to figure out if a border was actually there or not rather than what the banner looked like.

I'll start with the first one though. Like you said, the image has rough edges. Maybe try blurring the edges on a duplicate of it and then lowering the opacity until it looks right. The color of the text doesn't seem to match up well with the rest of the banner either, but other than that the text is okay. With the Serebii style I guess larger text is okay. *shrug*.

With the second one the main thing is that the text is sitting on the border, which is pretty bad looking to be completely honest. Other than that it seems okay, but you might want to blur the edges of Bugsy as well. Oh, and with both tags I still think there should be some effects in front of the two images so that there is added depth.

ANYWAY, I've been having graphics lessons with a girl from the GFX forums I go to, and so far we have had two of them. She's already taught me a lot though, and we are mainly working on stock usage and C4D placement. Here are the results of the two lessons (I guess you could call them collabs, since this was done through TeamViewer on MSN).

Lesson One:
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/Flurried/FirstTutorSessionSig.png

Lesson Two:
http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/Flurried/TutorSessionTwoV2.png

I'm not really a fan of the star stocks in either of these, and I think they should be erased in the parts that are over the focal point (too late now, I'm too lazy to fix them since I'll never use these); but other than that I like this style. I haven't made anything else really, I just have a folder full of WIPs. Hopefully I'll get to finishing those.

Hydro King

Wow, a lot a new pwetty stuff. XD

@Dehydrated: I really like those! They seem to strike me as being nicely abstracted. =) (not like some other stuff that just goes all over the place) The first one looks a bit plain though. =/

@interstellas: What can I say, it looks good! I kinda like strange things. It's hard for me to say what you might be able to do to improve it, 'cause I'm not sure what you were trying to get. XP

@Takaru: A bit plain, but they're okay. But it depends what you like to see in a banner I guess. Although it can be picked at by levels of complexity and flow, art is not a math which can be either totally right or totally wrong. I do have to agree with Flurry about the border though.

@Flurry: That was a pretty good tutorial back there. And thanks for the link within the tutorial on how to get C4D's. - I might use a few for some future banners.
*looks at lesson results* Um, no offense, but these don't look as good as what you've done in the past. They just look a little...plain compared to others and yet, they seem to lack that beautiful sense of depth that other "simple" ones have too. Meh, not sure if that that's how one would say it, but those are my thoughts anyways. Don't get me wrong though, they do look good. :) *is envious* =P

Well, here's the tut, Pinky. ^^; (I have just confirmed that I'm no good at this)
Okay, so first off, we need to give that Flaffy image of yours a paper-like look. Open a new document with a width of 600, a hight of 400, and a resolution of 72. Paste your image into the document along with a white paper texture of your choice. Click the eye symbol next to the layer with the paper texture to make it invisible. Before we can apply the paper texture, we must first give the image an extended, cut-out edge to make it look more authentic. To do this, duplicate the visible layer with Flaffy and then select the lower layer. Give this layer a fairly thick white outline (about 9 or 10 pt thickness). Create a new layer below this, fill it with black, and merge it with the layer above.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_1.png

Then go to Filter/>Artistic/>Cutout and enter the following settings: (or something similar)

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_2.png

Then use the "Magic Extractor" (or whatever Photoshop CS3 calls it) to get most of the black out of the image. Then use hue/saturation to make sure that whatever is on the layer is entirely white ('cause there might be some black bits leftover). Now add some soft white glow to around image (not sure how you do that in PS CS3) and duplicate the layer as many times as needed to make the edges sharp. (but not too sharp, otherwise it'll look blocky like before) Merge all the layers you just duplicated. Now the transformation to paper texture can begin. Make the paper texture layer visible again and move it over the image of Flaffy so that some paper wrinkles are visible. (be sure this layer is at the very top) Change the layer's blending mode to Multiply and duplicate it.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_3.png

You may also want to add another layer on top of everything else and apply a slightly noticeable pattern. Now hold Ctrl and click on the rough cutout layer to keep it's selection, then press Ctrl+Shift+I to invert the slection.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_4.png

Merge all visible layers and press Ctrl+X to end up with a paper pic of Flaffy. If you want the pic to look a bit more lively, go to shadow/highlights and enter 92% for lighten shadows and +38% for midtone contrast. Then go to hue/saturation and give the saturation +22.

Well, now that you have you pic prepared, open a new document with the same settings as before. Bring a resonably-sized, basic 2 pt bordrer into the document.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_5.png

Now make a new layer and move it below the border. Place the same kind of paper texure that you used for Flaffy in this layer and use it as your base backround. Duplicate thsi layer and set the blending mode to Multiply. (you can then add color using variations and change it tp something suitable using hue/saturation)

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_6.png

Then you just add lots of different effects to the paper using brushes, patterns, and all such stuff. (Remember that it's best to add each individual brush pattern and stuff to it's own layer. That way it'll be easier to adjust the transparency and blend mode to something that really looks nice for something individually.) Something that I like to do most often for effects is to use the eyedrop tool to get a neat color on the main image for my brush patterns. Then after I've applied the design in one of two places, I duplicate the layer, making the bottom layer's blending mode Overlay and adjusting the top layer's transparency to something like 50% or lower at most times.
You might end up with something like this:

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_7.png

Anyway, once you've added your effects and text, take the custom shape tool and use it on an entirely separate layer, placing it in a suitable spot that you'd like to make stand out. (just past the edge of the border in most cases)

Now kinda like what we did with Flaffy, keep the selection of the shape by holding Ctrl and clicking on the layer.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_8.png

Then make this layer and the border layer temporarily invisbile while merging all other layers. Press Ctrl+C to copy whatever is in the shape's selection and then undo until the layers have returned to being unmerged. Create an entirely new layer on top of everything else and press Ctrl+V to paste the shape's selection into a new layer. (adding a border to this can sometime's help to make it stand out) Name this layer "selection". Then give the border layer (which should be on top of everyting, excluding "selection") a mini border on both the outside and inside. The colors of the border are totally up to you, but I'd go with something that can be easily seen in the rest of your banner.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_9.png

Then change the blending mode of the border layer to Overlay and adjust the transparency if necessary. (remember that the border doesn't need to be too noticable) Now give the layer "selection" a relatively high drop-shadow style. (choose the lighting angle that suits best)

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_10.png

And finaly, copy and paste the Flaffy pic from the other ducument into a new layer (on top of everything of course) and give it the same drop-shadow layer style.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/example_11.png

All that's left now is to merge all layers except for "selection" and Flaffy and cut the banner out along the border. Save as a PNG image and you're done!
But remember, you're not limited to doing just this. Try adding a few other effects even after you've gone this far and see what you can get!

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/pinkpaperfluff_1.pnghttp://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/pinkpaperfluff_2.png

I'm trying to improve on the lighting in my "normal" style banners. lol Although the lighting in my Rhydon banner seems like it might be taking away from the focus on Rhydon... What do you think?

Just like the other people's response, I like yours. xD Anyways, thank you everyone. I appreciate the comments and the critiques.

I really like your first signature of Luxray. The flow is really different and the flow is nice. You should tone down the light source a bit and it'll look good.

For the second one, it's an overkill of black. x_x The rest, I do like it. I dunno whatelse to say. But good job though.

@Hydro King: Yeah, I know they aren't the best I've made, but I think the point of making them was so that I could learn some new stuff in Photoshop rather than to make the overall outcome look pretty. xD. Plus it's a new style so it's fun to learn. I agree with Interstellas about the banners though, the first one is good but the second one needs to lose the black blob. Was that you trying to do lighting or something? 'Cause I don't get why it is there.

@mangaeyes: This one is okay, but the text does really suck lol. Sorry. It looks SO unorganized. Different fonts, different colors, different sizes, in different places. Have you looked at those text tutorials? Text is text whether it's in GIMP or PS, so it's not GIMP. Also, erase the effects that are over the focal point and add in some lighting. This one is seriously lacking, as it looks like an image with some random C4Ds place on top and some bad text that was shoved in there. Sorry if I sound harsh lol, I'm just trying to help.

Seriously, I love both of these. They're both amazing. I'm jealous of your teacher havingness. :(

That's true. You can never learn too much.
lol Yes, it was. XD I was trying to make it look like there's a steep, rocky wall that Rhydon's drilling into. But I guess it doesn't need that much darkness.

I agree with Flurry, manga. It looks a bit messy and without focus. The text just doesn't fit with it either... With a little work though, it could be a star banner indeed! ^^

Now I don't mean to sound rude, especially to the club owner, but Flurry, I don't take too kindly to that word. And there's absolutely no need to use such foul language.

Lol sorry about that, I was joking around so I didn't think anyone would take it so seriously. After all it's just a word either way, who decided it was bad? That's my philosophy. xD. I won't use it anymore though, as long as I remember that you don't like it. ;P

Like Interstellas said, fix your links. :D. As for the questions, I have never heard of a Paint.Net tutorial. I just took a look on Google for any of them, but they are all overly simple and won't help you much. You can get brushes from deviantArt (I think they would work for Paint.Net...) and you can get textures from there as well. Just type in "brushes" or "textures" in search there.

Yesterday I made three signatures, although after the first one I realized I still had a request in my shop to do, but then I soon forgot about that after lunch. I'll hopefully get to that today. Anyway, I've been experimenting a bit with smudge and photo manipulation, so here they are.

Hey there, Mr. J! So we meet again. :D

Shows how much you know about Paint.NET, Flurry. =P Google gets you almost nothing for Paint.NET tutorials. As a former Paint.NET user, I can definitely tell you, go to this this site: http://paintdotnet.forumer.com/index.php
There you'll find almost anything you could possibly need for Paint.NET, including useful tutorials, extra plugins, and friendly advice from fellow Paint.NET users. One of the extra plugins that you'll find is Custom Brush Mini, something that allows the use of Photoshop brushes. (last I checked though, you'd have to extract the images from the abr files first and then put them into a special folder)

Once again, Flurry, that's such cool stuff! My favorite is the Transformers one. The orange seem to compliment the image, rather than distract from the focal point.
The middle one, however, seems too sharp and messed around. It just doesn't have that nice flow to it. =/ Meh, that may be just me though.
BTW, I saw some of that stuff on deviantart before you even posted here. =P (I should comment there sometime)

That's good that the Transformer's one is your favorite, since it's the one in the SOTW. xD. And I had a bit of trouble with the middle one, since it was my first photo manipulation kind of thing. And I put that stuff up on deviantArt first because I didn't want to double post/edit a previous post to put up the new stuff, so I just waited for someone else to post. :P

You do sound harsh but its absolutely fine. I love CC.

I haven't looked at the tutotrials...I know text is similar in all programs but I think it would really help if it was specifically for GIMP.

I'll try to take your advice and improve it. Thank-you!

Take a looksie at this, Frozen posted it a while ago:
http://iceydragon11.deviantart.com/art/Photoshop-Sig-Making-Basics-109134683

Doesn't matter whether you are using Photoshop or GIMP, except for the part about how to add depth. There has to be some way to Apply Image to a new layer in GIMP though, and if not you can just blur out the background and sharpen the image. Frozen also posted two text tutorials on the second page, which are useful as well. Text is the same for all programs because it is telling you what it should look like, where it should be, how large/small it should be, etc.; NOT how you put in the text.

And what do you mean as the base of the image? You mean the final product? The effects are still sloppy and there is no flow, so read about that in the tutorial I posted. Maybe I'll make a tutorial about how I make my signatures... I dunno. It might help a few people. *shrug*. Although I'm not the best either. xD

Mmk, accepted into the club Mr. Joker. ;D. Your stuff is good for a beginner, they just lack some good effects.

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr271/MrJoker917/graphics/fdadd.png

This one is probably one of your bests, however it seems kind of fuzzy. And there is this annoying white spot near his left shoulder. This image has great potential though, I can just see the snazzy effects running along his arms. xD

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr271/MrJoker917/graphics/bfkjasbdfkbf.jpg

Kind of simple. It looks like you just slapped down an image and called it a banner to be completely honest. If you changed the coloration or anything I can't really tell. At the very least I think a star stock over it would make it pretty cool. And try to intensify the light source from above.

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr271/MrJoker917/graphics/fgadd.png

Probably your worst. LOL. Sorry to be so harsh. It's also fuzzy. Are you saving these as .PNGs? Because you should be. If not, it's just too fuzzy. Blur it a bit or remove whatever texture is on top of it (if you put a texture there), because it's distracting. The text needs work. It doesn't really fit at all and is bulky and blah. Also, your focal point should probably be Articuno's face, so follow the rule of thirds. Right now my eyes go straight for his back. Nice lighting though.

I like the idea behind the bottom two, however there really isn't much to say about them. xD. I WILL GET TO YOUR SIGNATURE I SWEAR. I keep forgetting. >_<

@Junpearl: Wow, it looks pretty good! It's simple and sweet, but not cheesy. Looks like it'd fit nicely for a shop banner! But I agree with Takaru though, the text needs to be a bit more visible to make this really catch eyes.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/3659/headervd.png

Two problems: the text is way too bright to read and Kirby seems to be floating. He should be standing on something if you are going to show his feet so it makes sense. Plus, there should be more effects over Kirby to add depth and incorporate him into the image.

So I messed around with eyes today.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v508/lupeplains/Chaoseyes.png

I like this one, but the only problem I have is that the effects around the eyeball itself seem messy and unorganized. I think it would look a lot better if you had effects coming out from the eyes (almost like the rays of a sun) so that there is flow and one's eye goes straight to the focal. Nice textures though.

http://i680.photobucket.com/albums/vv167/Hydro_King/asoc_series.png

The whole shape of the thing is kind of annoying me here. The edges of the tear drop frame-thing are kind of sharp, and could use some blurring. I think I'd just put the whole think in a rectangle shape honestly, but that's just my first thought. I like the use of color and the blending, but the text doesn't seem to fit in too well. I don't think you even need text to be honest, since you don't have to tell someone it's a splash of color, they can see it themselves. Unless you want to experiment with text that's fine. But I've started to only use text as a watermark so people won't rip stuff, and I don't even do that much.

Oh, and here's something I made a few days ago, but never posted it here. I know it's more of a simple thing, but that was the idea. I didn't want it too complex.

One thing that sticks out straight away is that the girl is not incorporated into the background at all. You see how the computer screen is blurry, the middle section is sharper, and the front of the keyboard is blurry? Your focal should be in the sharper section. In yours, the girl AND the effects are in front of everything, which makes it look awkward. Why is she in front of a keyboard anyway? Nice effects though, and I like how the text looks like an object rather than just text. Also try to establish lighting a bit more. It should be coming from the top left corner, so burn the shadows on the focal and darken the opposite corner.

Welcome to the club! If you need help figuring out stuff you can always look at tutorials on deviantArt, since there are a lot of them. Just letting you know since you said that you have to figure out stuff yourself. Those banners are nice starts though, so try taking a look at some tutorials and I'm sure you'll get better. ;D

Busy day, eh Flurry? =P That's understandable. And please, don't feel that it's your job to comment on every single detail of our art. I can see that you like to help people, but please don't make it a burden on yourself to comment on everything if there's too much. :)

I want to comment though! When I see something in here that I think could use improvement, I want to tell whoever made it. I guess I'm a bit of a perfectionist that way lol. Although when someone tells me what I should do to fix something I made I don't do it. OH WELL. Here is something I made Monday that I never posted yet:

http://i659.photobucket.com/albums/uu320/Flurried/NoText-Drowning.png

THAT'S ALL FOLKS! :D. If anyone wants me to make a tutorial for one of my sigs feel free to ask. I kind of want to try making a tutorial anyway, so I won't mind. I probably won't get around to doing it if no one asks though. Just try to make it a more recent banner or I will forget what I did to make it. xD

The teardrop shape is all part of the effect. (plus, there's almost no way I could've gotten such a skinny image to look proper inside a big 'ol rectangle lol) It's sort of an image inside an image. And I don't seem to notice the edges myself... Also, I know I made it, but I think the text fits in nicely, at least to me. (not too solid and not too light) And it's not that they couldn't tell it's a splash of color, the text just adds to the style of art. It's like someone placing text like "The Beauty of a Butterfly" or something within a picture of a Butterfly.
No disrespect intended, but opinions on art vary greatly depending on the artist. Actually, I'm going to send some works of mine in to a very talented artist that my family knows personally and see what he thinks of them.

The girl is not meant to be incorporated into the background just so you know, but I see what you mean about the sharper section of the keyboard and everything else sticking out on top. So much for my attempt to make something with text made to fit into the background... Thanks...

Yeah...well, okay then. And yes, I can easily understand that. At least different opinions do give people different ideas, right? (including yourself =P)

Um, about that last one you did there... It looks cool with "moving through water" look, but the c4d in front of her seems a bit overpowering and acts like it "stops" the flow. I don't really like how it looks so sharp either. (lol not pixel-wise) Also, it might seem to flow better with something more uniform with the direction she's supposed to be moving.
But all in all, you did a great job and the results look good. :) I can see you spent a decent amount of time on it. Um...might you consider maybe showing me a tutorial on how you made this one? I'd really like to see how you do it in your own way. ^^ If you have the time that is.

Also, just one thing, Flurry... You seem to use quite a lot of similar c4d's in most of your work. No offense intended and you do a great job each time, but it does look a little repetitive. Not one of your banners seem to strike me as having a unique look all of it's own. Maybe that's something you could improve on as time goes on. (just a suggestion, although it might be just my opinion lol)

Edit:
I say too much. XD Sorry.

Anyways, here's something else that I've done involving color manipulation:

I think the text does fit in with the background though. It looks like it is a part of the picture, not sure if that is what you were aiming for, but yeah.

I actually just edited that tag from suggestions I got from people at Fringe GFX. When I go through making a tutorial for it (yes, I'll try to xD), I will probably edit it more because I'm not sure I like the turnout of this one much either. I'm going to have to disagree with some of your comments too though. When I first saw the picture, I imagined her going in an upwards swing kind of motion, so I put that C4D there to follow that motion. See how it starts under her and then goes upwards? That's basically what I saw lol. I understand what you mean though, I guess it depends on perspective. And I kind of like how abrupt the image looks. I was going for something where she seemed to be in a trance underwater and then was suddenly awoken by something, don't ask why lol, that's just what I saw. xD

EDIT: Just made a third version since it's too dark for my liking. xD

Really? I'll try to change that lol. Which one's have you noticed, because I'll avoid using them now. When I look at the past four tags I've posted here though I wouldn't say that they are exactly similar to each other. I dunno. ;P

Lol, don't really know what to say here. If you are going for realism one thing I might add is that a real butterfly has one color for each cell on it's wing (upon looking through picture on google I discovered that lol, since I wasn't completely sure about that), other than that it's fine. :]

EDIT: Here is the tutorial. Tell me how I did. It's my first one lol.

Holy crap. Did I die here? I'm pretty much preoccupied with my personal life. ): Well, I appologize. But anyway, honestly, I feel real lazy to give out my comments to all of your work. My brain isn't working so much and I can't really think straight. ghey.

Anyways in my artclass, we're doing Photoshop work. However, the kind of Photoshop work we're doing is more of photo-manipulation. I think my stuff are kind of retarded. I don't really know. >_> I'll show it probably tomorrow. Yeah, fun stuff. Now I'm working with my CD cover. Thats the fun one. It's really self-expanitory, but my CD cover features Ayabie. Yaay. ^_^ I'm excited with that. I'll show you (tomorrow) how it looks like so far, but you'll only see the front view of it.

Umumumum I don't have much to say...it looks really good...I guess the colour manip looks really...outstandish and the newer water picture looks much better, in my opinion.
Maybe I'll crit more later.

EDIT:

The text looks kind of...out of place. Like, the font doesn't fit very well. Come to think of it, custom fonts are usually the most creative for banner.
The background, I think, looks a lot like, fabric, to be honest, and the snowy-blurred effect doesn't fit in very well.

Well, I've got a new banner after experimenting a little, but I should probably fix it first. Imna find some new brushes now (need sommore grunge ones).

And doesn't the Marth go in the Spriter's club?

Okay, I got some old wallpapers of brushes. Usually it's just brushes, nothing else. Made another today, too.

Um...I think I'm gonna leave.

Its just that I make these images for fun and I make them to my own personal standard in the 'serebii' style...well any style I want actually. I just feel a little out of my depth - some of you take graphics so seriously (don't get me wrong I admire that) but like I said I do it for fun and its more of a hobby...I don't want to carry on with these images for a career or anything. Also I joined this club when I was fairly tipsy which has to say something right lol?

Anyway, thanks for trying to help me with your tutorials but I think I'm gonna concentrate on my art and school work for now. Its been cool here and I like to think I've made some friends (I've definately made one at least lol).

So...bye! (=

If I was going for realism, would I make the rest of the picture black and white? =P (jk) Nah, I made it multicolored because it looked cool.

I notice that a lot of the banners either contain sharp, abstract c4d's, water splash c4d's, or crystal c4d's. Dunno if that's what the majority of c4d's are, but yeah... Although I've seen quite a fair few ones that are quite different from the ones I mentioned above.

And I'll have a look at the tutorial later, when I have the time, okay Flurry? But I'm sure it's better than mine. XD Thanks. I appreciate it!

Also, I have something I'd like to say. I want you to know that I will be quitting the Digital Art Club. I'm sorry, but there's just so much talk about how others should make their art. It's not that I don't like a good discussion on art, but...yeah, too much isn't good. I don't know about you guys, but I feel pressured nowadays to try and make things that I think others (like Flurry) would approve of.
So yeah, goodbye... I'll still see some of you guys around the forum.

Kind of a dumb question, but what's a C4D?

EDIT: And interstellas, the model you use for your banners looks a lot like my cousin! She modeled her wedding album once, and it was awesome. The Digital Media editing was superb too.
And I use PSE7, Photoshop Elements 7. I would install CS4, if I could find the serial code.

Lol don't worry about it being a dumb question. A C4D is an effect that you find on the internet to use in your art. You can find them on deviantArt or Planet Renders easily, and there are various types of them. Take a look. ;P

I'll make a good use with myself.
With your first signature, there's some things I do like and there is, of course, some things I don't like. I will start off with the things I do like and that is your focal point. The background is decent and the typography is placed in a right place. It's not really a wow-factor for me because there's many things you could have done to it besides having it displayed like that. Unfortunately, I'm not so crazy with your layout of it. It's just placed there and it's not super-creative. With your background and your focus point, it shouldn't just blend in or whatever. Not completely at least. Your composition on this is weak and it needs to be worked on with your colour choices. Not really bad, but not really good either; but I do say it just looks okay.

Your second signature, I like how it's displayed. Good layout, I like the colours. Hm, this is sad, I don't have a lot to say about it. *yawn* Well I'm just sleepy. >>; But I mean it, I like this one than your first one and thats just in my opinion.

This is a random banner. It's slightly transparent under the stamps in some places as well.

These three are pixel stretches. The Vaporeon is my favorite, the Jiggly was for my brother.

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/4204/pizzelstrect.png
http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/8294/pixelstrechglaceon.png
This was the result of playing around with some interesting brushes. And grainy film, saturation effects, brightness and contrast etc.

I would like to know out of curriosity, why did you choose that type colour? I can't see it at all, it's better off with white and have a small drop-shadow of some sort. That's the reason why it's horrible. I like the font style, I don't like the colour.
