View Full Version : 2011 Fanfiction Awards: Nominations

The Great Butler
1st January 2012, 9:23 AM
Now that 2012 is here, it's time to look back on the past year of our Fanfiction board and honor the best in what we saw.

That's right, it's awards time again!

The first step down that road is, of course, nominations. This phase of the process will last from today, January 1, 2012, to February 12, 2012 with a situational extension to February 26, 2012 if there are not enough nominations entered.

What's eligible to be nominated here? That answer's simple. Anything that was posted in the 2011 calendar year - January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011 - is permissible.

EDIT: I didn't think this would be necessary at first, but now I see that a few more rules are going to be needed.

1: There is now a limit on how many times that a single person can nominate one fic and one author. The limit is four nominations for a single story by a single person, and six nominations total for a single author by a single person.

2: More of a clarification instead of a new rule, but still - nominations are for things that were actually posted in 2011, not for older moments that were in fics that also were updated in 2011.

Now let's get down to work. Look over the list of categories below, and for each, enter up to two nominations for that category.

Are there no limits on how many times a single person can nominate one story/author? (Question, not criticism - I just want to be sure before I nominate.)

Are there no limits on how many times a single person can nominate one story/author? (Question, not criticism - I just want to be sure before I nominate.)

No such rule was present last year, so no, there isn't. There are enough categories that nomination lists should be diverse enough.

Okay, then! I'll consider that my cue to be a raging elyvorg fangirl. (If this is excessive, which it probably is, please do say so and I'll cut it down to something slightly more sensible.) EDITED. Not that it didn't deserve all the other ones too.

Question? If a fic was started in previous years but continued in 2011, is it eligible for nomination?

[Imaginative]:[Clockwork]
2nd January 2012, 4:00 AM
I haven't read nearly enough this year to get a good list going, but I'll definitely fill this out as best I can. =D With thoughts, for some reason.

Best Pokemon Chaptered Fic
The Battle Frontier: A Brendan and May Adventure (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=533114) by Breezy
It's embarrassing how far behind I am on this (I've only read the first two or three chapters) but I've immensely enjoyed that small portion. Plus, it's one of the very few chaptered fics I've read this year, so. ._.

Best Pokemon One-Shot
The Life of a Bulbasaur (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=525961) by Bulbaclaw
I don't think he's active anymore, but I really like this one-shot, for whatever reason.

Retroactive Continuity (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=548910) by JX Valentine.
I never got to review it (it was completed by the time I read it) but it was excellent and I was really wowed by the idea and the execution.

Best Plot
Crushed (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528557) by Dragon user X
It was a very interesting idea and I thought it was done really well.

Most Original Overall
Retroactive Continuity (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=548910) by JX Valentine.
Like I said, this idea was so cool to me and I've never seen anything close to it.

Best Characterization in a Short Story
Option Other (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528450) by Breezy
A really simple, really cute one-shot where the characters and their interactions were the highlight.

New Game (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=529465) by Dragon user X
All six characters' personalities came across perfectly in such a small space. It was the thing I liked most about this piece.

Best Non-Romantic Relationship/Interaction
Hilda and Hilbert in Option Other (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528450) by Breezy
I just couldn't get enough of their back-and-forths. XD

Best Human Main Character
Hilda in Option Other (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528450) by Breezy
I just cannot stress enough how much I loved these characters. Hilda's last, gloriously corny line was one of my favorites of all time.

Best Non-Human Main Character
Rhydon in New Game (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=529465) by Dragon user X
I suppose this would be considered a main character. :/ Anyway, all the characters were great but this one was my personal favorite. Nearly broke my heart.

Most Memorable Quote
“I don't mind losing”–she didn't mind a lot of things, he noted–“and I have no regrets about my battle with Alder. But I will be back. Trust me. Until then, I suppose I have 'other' things to do.” She winked.
I couldn't bring myself not to nominate this. It's a shame it's only as great as it is in context though.

Whew! I skipped a lot of categories, either because I hadn't read anything that was close to qualifying or I just didn't have a clear winner or favorite. I'm glad I got this done though! =)

Question? If a fic was started in previous years but continued in 2011, is it eligible for nomination? Yes, it just needs to have been updated with some content during 2011 to be eligible.

Quick question, are any fictions in the Shipping Fics section eligible (in the Anime and Manga > Shipper's Community subforum)

Quick question, are any fictions in the Shipping Fics section eligible (in the Anime and Manga > Shipper's Community subforum)

The Shippers section has their own awards that they handle independently for those.

2 quick questions... do I have to put a link to all the stories/chapters that I nominate? And if it's a nomination to something that streaches across several chapters, where should the link lead to?

Dragonfree
2nd January 2012, 5:06 PM
Just link to the fic's thread, not the individual chapter; the voting system can only handle thread links as it is.

Most Heartwarming Scene: “Good idea,” Rui remarked after Espeon had followed his brother. “Hopefully they won’t take too long...”

“It’s what we did in the old days in fact,” Wes admitted with a slight smirk. “But meanwhile, if you don’t mind you could tell me more about what you were saying when we were so rudely interrupted.”

“Ah,” Rui replied, looking at her feet. “Well, sure, there’s the stuff I said already, but I suppose those are not the only reasons why because I suppose when I get down to it you could say that I like you, but not just like you but maybe-” she tried, before being interjected by Wes holding up a hand.

“Rui, you’re rambling again,” Wes said slowly as Rui pouted.

“Well, I’m not sure I can put it in words that easily...well!” she suddenly piped up, and before Wes knew what happened she had kissed him.

“Well indeed,” he said at length. fromThe Retelling of Pokemon Colosseum (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=246389) by bobandbill

Best Action Scene: Instantly, the cool wind whipped his hair around and tossed Meghan’s sunhat off of her head as if it had a mind of its own. Luna took flight next to them, struggling to keep pace with the massive bird. Meghan had both of her Pokémon, Emory and Vesta, out of their Pokéballs, both flying at top speed at the incoming blotches. They were starting to come into focus.

He felt drops of water on his hands, thought briefly, ****, its raining, but then noticed the silent tears streaming down Meghan’s cheeks.

“It’s going to be alright,” yelled John over the roar of the wind.

Her response was inaudible; all he could make out was “Blackthorn, Blackthorn.”

He seized control, somehow, some hidden instinct kicking in, and started talking to Charles.

“The hard part is going to be the approach,” he shouted, the previously formless blobs now showing the clear shape of men riding on the backs of black, hawk-like Pokémon.

They looked like Staraptor, not that it mattered; the other looming black shapes - obviously other Pokémon - meant to do the dirty work.

They were rapidly approaching, fast and furious. The faces of their attackers came into focus, probably twenty of them, their dark, bloodshot pupils and five o’clock shadow suddenly appearing.

“Dive,” John shouted, and the Pidgeot obeyed, narrowly missing the lead attacker.

“Bilbo, Water Gun at anything you see; Luna, Hypnosis!” John called, assuming Charles would act on his own. Meghan was busy commanding her Pokémon. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a giant grey bird gnawing on a Pellipper with a man hanging on for dear life.

“Luna!” he shouted again, startling the struggling Hoothoot.

<I’m trying! I don’t think I can! > she screamed.

“Do it or he dies!” he shouted frantically. Immediately her eyes glowed red, yellow waves almost exploding from them towards their target. The hypnosis attack caught the man in the grey Galactic uniform off guard. The bird Pokémon, a species unknown to John, fell asleep, falling down, its master flung from her back. John followed the tumbling bodies as they landed with a violent splash in the water far below them.

Their ally climbed back aboard the gigantic seagull Pokémon, waved briefly in appreciation, and dove back downward to catch an enemy.

“Great job, Luna!” he cheered; she smiled.

“Who says you get to have all the fun?” asked Meghan, clearly having regained her composure.

“You can have the next one,” he joked, in a fake gentlemanly tone.

The mood changed suddenly though.

“Duck!” she cried. John instantly buried his head in the Pidgeot as the bird dove. He felt a searing, ripping pain on his back, as two twin yellow claws gored him. He felt like he was being yanked in the air for a brief moment, and then he was soaked, covered in water, his lower back sticky with blood.

“Bilbo?” he asked frantically.

< I no think he likes water, > he chirped. John couldn’t tell, but he was sure the oblivious Totodile was beaming.

He looked to his left, his eye forced to shut momentarily after a simultaneous wind gust and glare from the sun. He saw the bird that had gored him, a Staraptor, and a rider in a black robe, both of whom were drenched.

“He’s coming for another pass,” he moaned, trying to shake off the pain in his back. He looked down below. They were only feet from the water, which didn’t look so serene and calm now, instead like staring into the face of death. His stomach lurched. He forgot how much he hated flying.

“Vesta, Comet Punch that bastard out of the sky!” Meghan ordered.

The Ledian did as she was told, meeting the winged assassin head on, dodging a fierce bite from its beak, and using all of her arms to whip the duo down. The two of them were furiously thrown into the depths of the lake, so close to them that they felt the mist from the splash.

He looked up, the city now in front of him. Nothing was burning or seemed damaged, except for Sprout Tower to his left. The elderly structure was partially on fire; smoke billowing from a large hole in the middle of its structure.

As Charles rose in height, he looked for the enemy combatants. After a brief moment of scanning, he saw only a few, all of which were headed in the opposite direction. Struggling to catch up with them was the black hooded warrior they had just encountered. He must have survived. Falkner and Amelia, meanwhile, were charging after them with the rest of the militia that Gabe had gathered. They caught Falkner’s attention, and he waved them back, his face frozen in a sigh of relief.

Charles swiftly turned around, targeting the beach. After a few minutes of flying, the bird began to descend rather rapidly, tired from the advanced maneuvers it had just executed with the weight it was carrying. He landed clumsily, and Luna, Emory, and Vesta landed with him. from Nightfall ("") by Manaphyman

I haven't read nearly enough of the stuff here to make any objective choices, so I'll just fill out a few categories.

Best Writing Style: Coriolanus Rowland's Guide to Pokemon Husbandry (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=543615) by Cutlerine.
Cutlerine's cynical humor shows through amazingly in this work. The scientific theories he proposes in here are always logical and always make sense, giving us all a better insight into the pokemon world.

Best Non-Romantic Relationship/Interaction: David and Paula from Chronicles of Unova (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=538377)
It's amazing what can be done with a relationship without making it romantic. Those seems to be the most abundant type of relationship in the pokemon fics I've seen. David and his trusty partner share a truly unique relationship that I've never seen between a human and a pokemon before.

Best Comedy Fic: The Awesome of Awesomeness (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=410132) by Missingno. Master
This story always has me rolling out of my chair with laughter. The quirky characters never fail to make a funny scene and the running gags give the story a sense of continuity that, in my opinion, makes it seem less like a stand-up comedy act and more like a story like it should be. There's an omnipresent plot and plenty of drama and adventure that make it so the story is never stale. Kudos to you, Missingno. Master. I guess the reason I choose this part of the saga is because of the original plot intertwined with the journey fic aspect.

Best pokemon one-shot: New Game (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=529465) by Dragon user X
The words of this story reverberate in my mind every time I read this. Each word is carefully thought out, and is consequently poetic. The characterization is excellent. Most of all, it evokes feeling.

Most Dedicated Writer: Missingno. Master
He's been writing the same series for a couple years now. Also, he responds to pretty much every review. If that's not dedicated, I don't know what is.

Most Helpful Reviewer: JX Valentine
I've seen some pretty hefty reviews from JX. She points out every problem, no matter how small. That's much more helpful than endless praise.

Most Heartwarming Scene

With a heavy heart, he flipped over the lid. Staring back at him was the skeleton of a puppy.

More specifically, it was the Growlithe he had owned as a child. It was his best friend, and he shared so many memories with him—happy, sad, angry, the works. Seeing the decayed and broken corpse of his long-lost friend drove a hot knife into Blaine’s heart. A tear slid down his normally composed face behind his sunglasses. Shaking, he replaced the lid and lifted the coffin. He slowly dragged his feet in the direction of the boat.

He was ready to move on from Cinnabar, but he was not ready to forsake his past.

Sunken beneath this earthen plain
Lies a seed which awaits the rain.

Before he reached the ridge separating him from the boat, he heard Cubone making a ruckus. He tried to block out the sound, but finally an exclamation from Mr. Fuji himself made him turn around.

“Blaine! Come back!” Grimacing from emotional pain, he set down the coffin and dragged himself back to where Mr. Fuji and the Cubone were standing, near the hole. “Look down there.” Slowly, Blaine drifted his eyes back down to stare into the hole. Staring back at him was a red and orange striped and spotted egg.

Funniest Moment

“You look pretty beat up. I think you should take a drink, Hitmonchan.” Gyarados noted as he curled up, allowing himself to fit into the edge of the ring.

“Come on, Chan-“

“Why do you call me that?”

“It’s contagious!” Throh contemplated a joke for a moment, then snapped his fingers. “Now how about we make a new kinda drink recipe! I’ll call it… Doc Slam. Step one, chill a Gyarados by hitting it with a maximum power Sky Uppercut. Watch its tears fizz out of its eyes for about ten seconds, and then grab a mug. Its tears will eventually start spewing out a sweet sensational soda. That’s how you make Doc Slam.“

Lilligant giggled. “That sounds like a cool soda! Though the recipe sounds a bit profound and bland. Now why don’t you hear it from a real cook who’s been in the kitchen a ton?”

“Yeah, why not? It’s not like we have all day.” Hitmonchan sarcastically responded as he crossed his arms.

“Now find a Gyarados and make sure it is completely flattened out. To do so, you must completely shock it in every way possible. After doing so, that’s when you…“ Lilligant’s leaf curled as a hand would make fist, as well as changing her tone of voice to a more violent one. “…grab it by the neck! Once you’ve got Gyarados, slam him into a hole about three yards high, three yards wide, constantly trying to push it into there! After about doing it for a minute, remove the Gyarados and shake it as much as you can, until it throws up the best-tasting soda ever! This can be repeated up to three times a day until the Gyarados faints from lack of liquid. And that’s how you make Lilligant’s Spice Soda!”

Both Fighting types were dumbfounded at how violent Lilligant sounded. “That recipe makes my recipe look like carbonated water.” Throh replied.

If I read any other fics that I think deserve awards I'll edit them in. But I've only read these 3 + a couple of other so far.

PS: Character in the entire advent of adventureness series have just been put in the random of randomness as it is the latest completed fic in the series.

May I have your attention? Thank you. Don't get me wrong, it thrills me to see my fanfics nominated here. But I see some of you nominating The Adventure of Adventureness in various categories. As this fic has been completed in 2010, it is not eligible for these awards. The other three stories in the series, however, The Awesome of Awesomeness, The Random of Randomness, and The Epic of Epicness, are all eligible for these awards, as they were all worked on in 2011. Thank you.

And now, my own nominations! I may add more later on.

As a side note (that Butler already probably knows about but should probably be put down in light of treeko's nominations), but XP-494, XP-650, and the Ixodida are all the same species. So it can really be listed any of those ways. b)'')b Thaaaat's... pretty much just to avoid confusion later on, pretty much. *solemn nod*

Also! Nominations! I've covered pretty much only what I've actually either read or skimmed through over the course of the year. Yes, the ballot is long. No, it actually didn't take me that long to compile. Tip for those of you thinking about editing in picks later: if you know your tastes, you can go through the entire fic archive for the year in a night just by reading the first page or chapter and eliminating anything that doesn't suit your fancy right off the bat. b)'')b

Anyway! There's a few fics I skipped over completely because I'm attempting to catch up with prequels (and they know who they are), so I just want to apologize for not including them. I might go back and slip them in later along with some nominations for categories I didn't touch.

Babbling over...!

Overall Fiction Awards
Best Pokemon Chaptered Fic
First nomination:
The Thinking Man's Guide to Destroying the World (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=513306) by Cutlerine. It's extremely carefully written, with well-developed characters, a deep plot, and just the right balance of humor.

Second nomination:
The Kingdom (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=547410), Zibdas. Just… yes. The first chapter alone is pretty awesome, with incredibly vivid detail and just enough hints to establish Red's personality without actually telling us who he is. Also, it has nice dashes of humor and is, in general, pretty well established.

Best Pokemon One-Shot
First nomination:
New Game (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=529465), Dragon user X. What can I say? I'm a sucker for experimental story modes. Not to mention he really got into the mindsets of each of the characters (who themselves were pretty well-developed) to create an extremely emotional and poignant piece.

Second nomination:
Fad (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=482621), :[Clockwork]. The reviews are correct about this one. Fad sets itself up to capture the forlorn feel of nostalgia, and it does a fantastic job at doing so, with a character who just won't accept that everything he knew is gone.

Best Non-Pokemon Chaptered Fic
First nomination:
The Ripple Effect (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=430827), Zadros.

Second nomination:
Digimon: The Roots of Yggdrasil (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=523317), Kamotz.

Best Non-Pokemon One-Shot
Who Do You Think You Are? (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=503689), Dawn_Hero. It starts off rather beautifully, much like a fairy tale, with vivid details and characters that seem to be names of concepts rather than flat-out people. You've got the eloquent condemned man, whose gentleness shines through his kind words to the Queen. Then, there's the Queen, who loves and adores this man with sincerity and purity, despite the fact that he immediately rejects her. And, of course, there's the ending, which I didn't expect at all. It's just plain beautifully told, and it doesn't remotely beat its reader over the head with its message.

Other Fic Awards
Best Plot
First nomination:
The Thinking Man's Guide to Destroying the World (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=513306), Cutlerine. Snarky Rotom getting stuck in the head of an ordinary kid, starting off a long journey with a *****y Sapphire and every intention of defying every rule in the book? Yes, please!

Second nomination:
Absconditus Infensus (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=523254), moonlightning and kjt. Pokémon invade the real world in a way that doesn't make me want to jam my back button. (Realistic and avoiding the "OMG POKÉMON LET'S BE TRAINERS OLOLOLOL" trap.) That's all I have to say about that.

Most Original Overall
Lull (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=425512), Breezy. I wish I could describe all the reasons why I thought this deserved this category, but I'd be here all night.

Best Writing Style
First nomination:
Lull (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=425512), Breezy. Now I finally have to elaborate. Basically, one of the things I loved about this fic is how conversational the narrator was. There were times when the narrator seemed uncertain of details ("Black. Maybe it was for an hour. A minute. A second.") and other times when they betrayed a pretty sharp sense of humor ("Ropes are heavy. Don't ever let someone tell you they're not because they are, and if they tell you ropes are light, then you tell them they’re liars. Really. Straight up."). Either way, the narrator gave the entire story a certain dreamlike quality to it, like it's being related verbally like some kind of legend, not like it's being related in the plain text of a book.

Second nomination:
polar nettles (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=540353), Ejunknown and katiekitten. The fic is actually a series of drabbles, but even with the word restriction, both writers have shown enough talent to say a lot using only a little, if that makes sense. Their descriptions are powerful, and their narration, by necessity, is straight-to-the-point but clear. You wouldn't even be able to tell that it's actually a collab fic because of how seamlessly their parts integrate with each other.

Best Description
First nomination:
The Kingdom (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=547410), Zibdas.

Second nomination:
polar nettles (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=540353), katiekitten and Ejunknown.

Poetic and vivid details on all counts… but nothing even close to purple. Definitely worth a look or few.

Best Expansion of Canon
First nomination:
The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=246389), bobandbill. Because yes.

Second nomination:
Under the Same Sky (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528756), Draco Malfoy. The fic starts off by giving a believable voice to the main character, and it just keeps going from there. All of the canon characters are fantastically IC, and the plot in general only adds to that. Draco's not afraid to delve into every corner of canon (even something as minor as why the protagonist is named a color or why N is only known by a letter) to flesh out the world he presents to us, and the interactions between Black and Cynthia make the whole package beautiful and entertaining. Not to mention it gives a sort of meaning to the post-game events.

Best Characterization in a Short Story
Giovanni's secretary, Secretary (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=519457), rokettololi

Best Romantic Relationship
First nomination:
Celebi/Gardenia, Skogsra (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=514806), Diddy. Just… the ending. It's beautiful.

Second nomination:
The Queen/the condemned man, Who Do You Think You Are? (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=503689), Dawn_Hero. Even if it's one-sided, it's beautiful.

Best Non-Romantic Relationship/Interaction
Hilda and Hilbert, Option Other (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528450), Breezy.

Most Heartbreaking Fic
First nomination:
Crushed (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528557), Dragon user X

Second nomination:
Who Do You Think You Are? (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=503689), Dawn_Hero. Just… yes.

Pokemon Genre Awards
Best Trainer Fic
First nomination:
The Thinking Man's Guide to Destroying the World (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=513306), Cutlerine.

Second nomination:
Mentor (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=546053), Dagzar. I have to say, Mentor's one of the best I've read. The character balances between Leah, Ed, and Ally (when Ally is doing much in the way of interacting, at least) really make it, to put it in short. Not to mention it's a rather interesting spin on the new trainer journey, and I adore the idea of the Trainer Mentor Program in general. In short, awesome main characters combined with something fresh and new brought right to the table. You really can't go wrong here.

Best Horror Fic
Wendigo (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=490939), Dawn_Hero

Best Comedy Fic
First nomination:
The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=246389), bobandbill

Second nomination:
Turnabout Assumptions (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=483326), bobandbill. It involves Miles Edgeworth being hit in the face with a fish. This is all you need to know.

Best Pokemon-Centric
Three Heads Are Better Than One (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=556077) by elyvorg. I have to say the score for the contest is well-deserved. This fic shines a spotlight on Dodrio pretty well, carefully crafting believable personalities for each of the three heads while exploring completely the way they operate within one body. It's also a pretty unique spin on any multiple-component Pokémon I've ever seen. Most writers tend to handle things like Dodrio or even Dugtrio, Magneton, and so forth as one robotic entity, but not here. These characters are alive, and although they have their conflicts with each other (squabbles, guilt trips, general personality clashes), they're ultimately a team by necessity.

Best Canon Character-Centric
First nomination:
Secretary (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=519457), rokettololi. It's basically "Giovanni's Secretary: The One-Shot," and it does a great job of being such. It effectively gets into the mind of a character that doesn't even have a name, and it's very careful in describing her sadistic nature without making her seem overly violent. Instead, she comes out intensely powerful, and it's almost sexy to watch her dominate that random grunt.

Second nomination:
Option Other (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528450), Breezy. The banter between Hilda and Hilbert is absolutely hysterical ("You're… I don't even know." "Glorious in twenty different ways."), but even more than that, it captures both characters really well. Both of them seem human, and the relationship between them seems casual – natural, even. You can really believe that these two are genuine, extremely close friends, even if they do rib each other a little.

Character Awards
Best Human Main Character
First nomination:
Alvaro, Something's Got To Give (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=553973), Dragon user X. Admittedly, I've only read the first chapter, but in the space of a first chapter, Dragon hit a serious home run, proving that, yes, you damn well can create an entertaining character at the beginning of a long fic. And an entertaining character Alvaro is, particularly thanks to the fact that he, for once, provides an actual reason why he started late. It's not because of law-related shenanigans or vaguely defined plot reasons. It's just because it's all part of Alvaro's motivations, and that makes Alvaro probably the best human protagonist I've read this year.

Second nomination:
Giovanni's secretary, Secretary (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=519457), rokettololi. I would have her boss me around any day. Except I won't because that's considered a level of Hell. She may be the main character of the fic, but she's anal and a full-on *****. Yet, she's sadistic without being ridiculous, powerful without stepping over the line, someone who's entertaining as a character while being someone you'd like to never meet in your workplace. In short, the concept of her is sexy. If you're into GLaDOS-like characters, anyway.

Best Non-Human Main Character
Robin Goodfellow, The Thinking Man's Guide to Destroying the World (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=513306), Cutlerine. I don't think any explanation is really needed to state how hilarious and awesome Robin tends to be.

Best Human Supporting Character
Hilda Wayland, Something's Got To Give (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=553973), Dragon user X. A mature, responsible, caring mother who actually acts mature, responsible, and caring? Yes, please.

Fic Moments Awards
Funniest Scene
First nomination:
“But look at it like this. My life right now is on a repetitive schedule, and I know you like things on schedule. Maybe I'm just trying to please you. Have you thought about it like that?”

“I also like making out. Please me that way.”

“Keep trying,” she said with a grin.

“Damn.”
- Option Other (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528450), Breezy.

(Oh, Breezy, you tease.)

Second nomination:
“OBJECTION!” he cried loudly. However, all Phoenix managed to do was lose his grip on the animal, the trout flying through the air and hitting Edgeworth right in the face.

Pearl grinned to herself. She never really understood the way the courtroom worked, but she knew that if the crowd shouted loudly after Phoenix did something it usually meant he did that something well. She grinned, before mentally slapping herself. So much for not talking to him!

The nine-year-old girl continued to muse to herself as Phoenix hurried over to make sure Edgeworth wasn’t badly hurt. But maybe...maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Phoenix isn’t Maya’s ‘special someone’...after all, they both insist on denying that! That, and I never see any Psych Locks when they do so...

“Sorry, Edgeworth, I didn’t mean to throw that...” Phoenix mumbled, feeling himself glow red with embarrassment.

“Mr Wright, I will not tolerate the throwing of evidence in my courtroom! Maybe Godot and his cups of coffee were allowed, I’ll admit, but I draw the line at trout!” the judge shouted, banging his gravel loudly. “I hate fish,” he added with a stern frown.

He doesn’t ever stare at her like real lovers should! But if so, then who does he like? All adults should like someone!

“Great, this suit is ruined forever now!” Edgeworth lamented as Phoenix tried to remove the fish, only for it to flop out of his hands and on top of Edgeworth’s head.

“Why is it still ALIVE!?”

“GET IT OFF!”

Most Frightening Scene
I went to lay my hand on James's shoulder, but something stopped me in my tracks. My hands were bright red.

I looked at them for a second, confused, then looked to see where the red had come from. My eyes slowly worked their way down to my lap, the sheet laying over me stained with red. "James...? What's on these sheets...?" My eyes then made their way across the bed, the thick, red substance pooling where James had been laying next to me. The sheets were ripped in places, and a single hand coming up from the floor laid on the side of the bed. A single hand with the wrist cut and a diamond ring on its finger. Realization and horror flooded over me. "James, what the hell is going on here?!" As I went to grab the man sitting at the edge of my bed, it was then that I saw its horrible figure. The way its back looked as if it had been broken three times, the way its head was facing upwards at a horrible angle. I grabbed it by the shoulder, touched the skin that felt strangely inhuman, and as it turned to me, I screamed in horror. Its eyes and skin were pure white, but its face was covered with blood, as if it had just been feeding. It looked at me with a surreal form of delight as it licked its lips, its tongue slowly moving over its pointed, bloody teeth. A deep gurgling sound arose from its throat as it turned back to my daughter, moving its face down towards her ear. "Don't you dare touch her!" I screamed, lunging towards the monster as quickly as I could in hopes to stop it from whatever it had planned. In a single, sudden motion, it then threw her to the ground and shot off towards the window on all fours, skidding to a halt and looking back over its shoulder at us. I could almost see a smile cross its face as it gave a deep growl before jumping out into the night.
Wendigo (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=490939), Dawn_Hero.

Most Heartbreaking Scene
First nomination:
Lucidity. She pulls herself forward, watching the edge draw nearer by miniscule increments. Pride. She pulls again, her body by now screaming in protest. Freedom. She pulls again, standing up now out of the question. Sun. She pulls again.

[i]Wahahaha, wheheoo, I'm the big man, yes I am, see me come, I'm going to be rich, and you're going to make me that way, say, I wonder how you're doing there, you've been awfully quiet, good girl, good girl, goody-googy, goody-girl you, wahooooo, good-good-good, goooooood . . .

The sun, the sun. The edge is right there. Her nose pushes its way under the red canvas, and a little light floods in, pure as the drops of dew on a rose in the morning. Almost, almost. A few more pulls, her body now shaking with effort and misery, but also that most elusive of vehicles: hope. The sun, she can almost see the sun.

There is nothing. She tries to back up, but her back legs cannot move properly and she can only watch, as if she is a helpless outsider, as her tiny body tips over the edge and off, down, out. The sun, the sun! It's there, but it's not. It's something else, something bright and round and white. It is cooler than the sun, and it sits in a field of indigo, surrounded by its incandescent children, calmly watching as the last of her balance goes and she drops like a filthy, hopeless stone. She wonders briefly if she will fall forever, but that thought is quickly quashed as the ground hits her like a mallet, shattering her utterly.

As she floats her way skyward on wings made from her soul, she watches the moonlight wash over the world below, cleaning what is unclean and righting what is wrong. It kisses the top of the rough red drapes over what had been her prison. It brushes its fingertips across the sleeping eyelids of the sailor who tried to free her. It gently folds itself downwards, settling itself in silken ribbons upon the body of a tiny Pokemon who, in life, did no wrong, and embraces it like a long-lost child.
Crushed (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528557), Dragon user X.

Second nomination:
The Queen did not say anything, continuing to walk forward as they made their way into the town square. Before she knew what she was doing, the Queen turned to the man and embraced him, holding onto him tightly the way she had always hoped to as a child and he had always hoped to hold his beloved as a child as well. "I'm sorry," she whispered quietly. "Love is a good thing, something that brings peace and happiness to all that it touches. Never should I have outlawed it in this fair kingdom."

The man smiled at her, breaking the embrace and walking towards the execution stand in the middle of the town square. "Fear not, my Queen. There must be a reason why my love is met with death while yours shall be met with praise once it is found."

The Queen watched as the man she had loved since her youth stepped onto the execution stand, surrounded by crowds of her loving, jeering subjects. Before her eyes another young man stepped onto the execution stand, holding the hand of her beloved and kissing him gently on the lips as the executioner made his way through the masses.

And as the crowd cheered at the death of the young, loving couple, not a single soul noticed the crying Queen in the midst of the revelry.

Marina couldn’t have understood him, but she seemed to get what he meant all the same. “I didn’t enter the League in the end,” she said. “I tried – I went right up to the registration desk and everything. But it just felt wrong, entering all of my Pokémon except you. I couldn’t do it.” She gave us an apologetic smile. “So no League battles for a while, I’m afraid.”

She suddenly threw her hands up in frustration. “I’ve really messed up, haven’t I? If I’d just kept looking for longer, I might have found you, and then I could still have got here and registered on time.”

Left rested his head comfortingly on her shoulder, and she sighed. “No, you’re right,” she said. “There’s always next year. And you’re still here, which…” Marina smiled at Left, her eyes lighting up with that same joy from before. “I still can’t believe you’re alive.”

She lifted her bandaged hand to ruffle Left’s feathers. “Oh, Dodrio,” she said, smiling sadly. “I’m so sorry I didn’t try harder to find you. You must have been all alone in there.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Left shared an amused glance with Right and me. For all her qualities as a trainer, sometimes Marina didn’t understand us at all.

Best Action Scene
The Pokémon exploded.

Whether by the heat or a special technique, it became a living bomb, destroying both itself and the boy’s Pokémon, scorching the land around it, and covering the boy’s screams with a ringing left in the ears of anyone within hearing range. He wore his lungs out after only a few seconds, soon reducing his cries into wheezes and then nothing but sobs. She was absolutely decimated. Aside from a few scraps of hide and guts, she had crumbled into nothing more than a pile of ash.

Adding Pokémon to the battlefield was supposed to decrease the psychological damage of war. If you weren’t the one doing the actual killing, then the burden of murder would not be an issue. Pokémon were considered expendable. The military saw not the importance of the creatures to individual soldiers but rather the value of them as a weapon. It was a controversial view.

The boy ripped a knife from the small case on his belt and ran at the man without delay. Tears burned his eyes and blurred his vision. His target was enormous but there were no stakes left. They would both die eventually.

With this being the dominant thought in his mind, he dived through the air and stuck the blade as hard as he could into the guy’s chubby stomach and they both fell to the ground. Blood gurgled out and ran down his sides.

It was strange. The boy felt no pleasure now. He wasn’t even relieved to have avenged his Pokémon. In fact, he felt nothing now. Why was the anger gone? Where was the fear? He pulled the knife from the flesh and stared at it. He had murdered. He had reacted in a single flash of rage and had murdered another human being.

St. Peter’s Square was eerily quiet as Katharine strolled through it alone. She picked up a few bits of Shadow energy nearby, but that wasn’t what haunted her. For some reason, she felt as if someone was watching her every mood. Suddenly, a chill washed through her, and she was convinced someone was standing behind her.

“Hello, Chosen One,” a cold voice spoke.

She turned to see a tall, black-haired young woman step across the stones to stand a few feet in front of her. She shivered at the young woman’s cold gaze. There was no mistaking that she was a demon. The bottom of her black dress seemed to recede into the shadows as if they were one.

“I am Nyx,” she said, smiling a cruel smile. “And this is your last day on Earth.”

Ok sorry about that! I knew there must've been a limit but I guess I'm not great at reading instructions! All changed now!

I've not read much pokémon fanfiction these past few months, so I'll spend this nomination period praising those fics I remember or am still following.

Best Pokémon Chaptered Fic. Under The Same Sky (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528756) – Draco Malfoy. A wonderful concept that was played perfectly. I tip my hat to Draco for being able to pull this off at the level that he did. One of the only fics where I found myself waiting impatiently for the next chapter.

Most Original Overall. Pokémon Revolution: Maverick Heart (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=473608&highlight=Revolution+Maverick+Heart) - EonMaster_One. It takes elements from a trainer journey and elements from freaking Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (with the guild and what not) and blends it into a delicious mixture of storylines that would make the PMD games proud.

Best Expansion of Canon.
First Nomination
Tabula Rasa (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=542138&highlight=Tabula+Rasa) – purple_drake. Who else would think to explore why Lance had a subtle change of character between Gen 1 and Gen 2? purple_drake would and because she does it so brilliantly, she gets my nomination.

Second Nomination
Lull (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=425512) – Breezy. The sailor and his family who the Lunar Wing side-mission revolves around? When it comes to side characters, it doesn't get much smaller than that. The story that evolves from it however is gripping, funny, heartwarming and truly intense.

Best Character Development. Under The Same Sky (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528756) – Draco Malfoy. Black's journey from embittered misanthrope to not-so-embittered-misanthrope-but-instead-someone-able-to-embrace-his-past-and-accept-his-role was pretty darn amazing if you ask me.

Best Non-Romantic Relationship/Interaction.
First Nomination
Bill/Adam – Anima Ex Machina (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?p=10716583#post10716583) – JX Valentine. Introspection is often reserved for the one doing the introspectioning... not in Bill's case. When you play host to a parasitic alien lifeform who has access to your thoughts, it becomes a rather brilliant one-man duo. It can be thrilling or hilarious, either way, I enjoy their scenes together so much.

Second Nomination
Black/Cynthia – Under The Same Sky (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528756) – Draco Malfoy. Invited to blow off steam in a luxury villa for a while, Black had no idea he would be sharing the living space with none other than Sinnoh League champion Cynthia. The relationship that blossoms from their proximity is truly wonderful to behold. Be it mentor/student, mother/child or even equals, you can always be assured true to character brilliance.

Best Original Species. Ixodida – Anima Ex Machina (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?p=10716583#post10716583) – JX Valentine. It has to be done. Beautifully conceptualised and made out to be a truly terrifying force. When these guys appear, you know it's time to get serious.

Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Fic. Anima Ex Machina (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?p=10716583#post10716583) – JX Valentine. Alien apocalypse? Parasitic lifeforms? Roving bands of humans trying to survive? Political conspiracy? Team Rocket still up to no good? Then you have one little scientist who's in the middle of everything. One mistake means either death or a crowbar to the side of the head.

Best Canon Character-Centric. Under The Same Sky (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528756) – Draco Malfoy. I think I've ran out of complimentary adjectives by this point. I loved this fic.

Best Human Main Character. Lucas Blackthorn – Pokémon Revolution: Maverick Heart (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=473608&highlight=Revolution+Maverick+Heart) – EonMaster_One. A believable teen character through and through, the perfect blend of optimist and pessimist, hero and observer and damn easy to relate to as well. He isn't very remarkable in many ways, but it's this kind of average joe quality that gives him so much stock as a character.

Best Non-Human Main Character. Bill/Adam – Anima Ex Machina (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?p=10716583#post10716583) – JX Valentine. They inhabit one body, so it counts! What was once a human is now an ixodida, a pacifist scientist turned killing machine. Not that he exercises killing in any way. He's a fish out of water that while brilliant in his own ways, becomes woefully inept in so many other ways (situations that he finds himself in most often).

Best Human Supporting Character. Wil – Pokémon Revolution: Maverick Heart (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=473608&highlight=Revolution+Maverick+Heart) – EonMaster_One. Characterisation can be difficult sometimes, but EM1 pulls it off so well in so many different situations with so many characters that one begins to wonder whether he's an android of some kind. Wil is the Team Leader of the cell in which the two main characters belong. To Lucas, he's a mentor figure that seems more like a big brother than anything else, he's always willing to give it his all, even when the going gets tough. Not to mention the golden conversations the two have with each other. Guaranteed laughs when these two get started.

Best Established Writer. JX Valentine. They don't come much more established than Jax, she has her fingers in so many pies that it's a wonder she hasn't found work as a human pie thermometer. Excuse the metaphor. She has proven time and time again with her chaptered and non-chaptered works that she is a literary force to be reckoned with. Works like the dark, fairy tail-esque Braid, the utter mind**** of Retroactive Continuity and of course Anima Ex Machina. Plus, she's really nice and that always helps.

Most Dedicated Writer. EonMaster_One. This guy... Who else can consistently come out with 20 page+ chapters? Who else can complete not one, but two journey fics? Who else can battles so intense you might as well be watching it on screen? I don't know about any alternate answers, but EM1 has proven time and time again that he is dedicated to his writing. All of my applause.

Most Dedicated Reviewer. JX Valentine. Having seen the trouble she goes through to get her reviews done, the depth she goes into when making the reviews and the helpfulness of those reviews, I can safely say that there aren't many other people quite like Jax. Truly someone trying their best to make pokémon fanfiction, in general, a better place to be.

Overall Fiction Awards

Best Pokemon Chaptered Fic
Pokemon Epilogues: Season 1 - The Birth (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=491951) by Tonberry_King. The pokemon coma theory has been a popular topic for fan fiction, most of them rather repetitive/similar. But what makes this story stand out for me is that Tonberry thought more outside the box than just "How would Ash change?" but how each character would be different. The characters are all "darker," grittier, realer versions of themselves but still have that light-hearted appeal that we see in the "brightly-colored" anime. Most importantly, unlike most coma-theory stories I've read, it's aware of the idea of "life goes on" and that time doesn't stop just because Ash did for a while. It's beautifully characterized, heart-wrenching and hilarious, and has interesting plot points that make it a very interesting read.

Best Pokemon One-Shot
My Reasons (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=528740) by JX Valentine. What I really like about this one-shot is how well-developed both Bill and his sister, Faith, are, both as individuals as as siblings. The build-up to a certain event was described beautifully, and the subtle word choice/sentence structure to said event was amazing, especially when my mind finally made sense of it. What is also nice about this one-shot is that you can't entirely predict what's going to happen until it, well, happens. And once you realize what has actually happened, it's heartbreaking.

Other Fic Awards

Best Plot
To Dust (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=512896) by Lily. Who wouldn't love an older woman character who randomly gets teleported by her abra to unknown places and seems to be having a mental breakdown/recollection of bad memories from all the spacial travel?

Most Original Overall
Absconditus Infernsus (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=523254) by moonlightning and KJT. For a concept that has been killed and buried in the ground so many times, Moonlightning and KJT managed to put a "real life meets pokemon" idea into something fresh and innovative. The battles are some of the most interesting battles I've read and the new "concept" of pokemon and battling was introduced in such a way that was engaging and easy to understand. Unfortunately it's on hiatus for now, but it's definitely worth a read.

Best Writing Style
1) The Game of Champions (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=492836) by Lamora. One of the smoothest first person narratives I've read. It's a very intriguing view of Red. What I admire about the writing style is while a lot of things are explained, Lamora's writes in a way that doesn't seem like a list of facts; he's aware that he's narrating a story in the voice of a particular character and describes it as such.

2) To Dust (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=512896) by Lily. Lily has always had one of the most poignant, simple writing styles, and it's demonstrated gorgeously in her story. She really knows how to write from the perspective of her characters.

Best Character Development
1) ~Nameless Supplanter~ (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=481961) by Caduceus Brigade. What I really like about this story is how multi-dimensional Caduceus made the main character who, I might add, is never actually given a name or addressed by particularly anything. The character's main motive is to get Misty/Kasumi to love/lust for him by doing a series of actions; however since the character is so complex and manipulative, it's hard to tell whether his actions are genuine or just a stroke of luck. It's a story that has stuck in my mind for quite some time, and I've spent a good while trying to figure out this particularly crafty character out.

2) Pokemon Epilogues: Season 1 - The Birth (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=491951) by Tonberry_King. He takes characters that are well-known to act one way and completes does a 180 on them, yet their anime personalities still shine through. It's strange but awesome.

Best Horror Fic
Revenant (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=495784) by SilentMemento. Some of the description in this story is enough to make your skin crawl. Fic Moments Awards
Most Frightening Scene

I can’t see anything. Am I blind? Dead? No, I can’t be dead; why would Death chase me if I was already in his grasp? I keep hearing Andrea’s screams. God, I have to help. I can’t just lie here and do nothing. I have to open my eyes. Wake up, Claude! Wake up, damn you!

Pokulok knew that something was wrong the second he opened his eyes. He saw nothing but darkness, and he couldn’t move his legs. He had a cold feeling all around his skin, like something was crawling above and inside it. And it wasn’t just his skin. It was eating at his brain and his eyes…

Wait – that’s not a cold feeling…

He felt the area around his eyes with his fingers, dread working its way into his body. Normally, his eyes would have closed at the intrusion, but he immediately noticed that no matter what he did, they wouldn’t shut. He had a horrible feeling that there was something missing. His quivering fingers brushed against the upper part of his eyes, and he nearly emptied the contents of his stomach when he realized what was missing.

My eyelids! Oh, GOD!

The cold feeling that he had earlier had returned, but this time it seemed very tangible around his left hand. He grabbed at his left hand with his other hand, and he felt something squish against them. His eyesight was beginning to improve in the darkness. He felt around for the thing that he had crushed. When he finally found it and saw what it was, he let out a very high-pitched screech.

“Maggots! ****!”

Pokulok flung the crushed maggot away from him, revulsion racing through his body.

I think I'm a corpse, but why? Why am I dead? I can’t believe this is happening…

“Why is it so hard to believe? You’re already dead inside. Why can’t you be dead on the outside as well?” ~ Revenant (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=495784)

Best Action Scene

"They boy got an idea. “One!” The same attack was repeated. “Keep it up for as long as you can!” He dived yet again to dodge the rolling stone, squinting from the heat as the pursuing pup and trail of fire followed. “Good girl!” He glanced at the other man and saw he was screaming at his now-bright red Pokémon, something that had gone unnoticed until now.

Suddenly, apparently by command, the smoking, almost-bubbling boulder stopped. He stopped attacking, he stopped rolling, and judging from the dead look in his eyes, he had stopped caring. What followed happened too suddenly for the boy to comprehend immediately.

The Pokémon exploded." ~ Only God May Judge You (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=522118) by [Imaginative]:[Clockwork] (This is pretty much like Jax's nomination for this award).

Funniest Moment:

“You’re right Perry,” Phineas said “We live in a fan fiction now.”

“Does that mean a child controls our destinies?” Irving asked

“Yes, yes it does,” Isabella answered “And please, stop with all the fourth wall breakage. Seriously, there are other forms of humor to work with.”

“Don’t blame us,” Baljeet told her “Blame the writer! He thinks it’s funny!”

“If the author breaks the fourth wall one more time,” Isabella began “I’m seriously gonna hurt him.”

“I think that line breaks the fourth wall,” Phineas said

“That’s it,” Isabella said “The author is going down!”

“That also breaks the fourth wall,” Baljeet said

“What is the fourth wall?” Buford said

“I wait eight chapters to appear and as soon as I arrive, all my chapter is is just a bunch of fourth wall gags,” N complained

“Seriously,” Buford said “What’s the fourth wall?”

Most Suspenseful Fic: Operation GEAR: The Victory Star of Fate (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=549083) by The Great Butler- TGB really hits it out of the park with the twists and turns in this one. Every scene hits you with something unexpected and the action runs at a fast, exciting pace that keeps the reader wanting more.

Best Human Supporting Character: Olivia Mistbloom, Operation GEAR: The Firestorm Rebellion (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=526682) by The Great Butler- Olivia is the most adorable, bratty teenage girl ever and her quips and one liners, as well as the way she constantly annoys Matt, never fail to bring a smile to my face. She's just the kind of character you want to give a big hug.

Funniest Scene: Nekou and Olivia troll Matt's press conference, Operation GEAR: The Victory Star of Fate (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=549083) by The Great Butler-

“Does this system have ten-pound balls?”

This time Matt really was annoyed. It was Olivia who made the interrupting remark, and he immediately realized that Nekou had goaded her on into saying it. “Someone who isn’t my student who is getting penalized later for bad behavior, please,” he hissed through gritted teeth.

Best Horror Fic: Anima Ex Machina (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=427130) by JX Valentine- Excellent, suspenseful horror science fiction reminiscent of Shelley, Lovecraft, and King all at the same time. And with a decent sense of humor to lighten things up. Horrifying and yet never at the level of just to be shocking- when Jax writes horror, it's in the truest sense of the term.

Best Pokemon Chaptered Fic

Lull (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=425512), by Breezy - This fic deserves every accolade it's gotten so far and more. Why? Because I read it - and re-read it - without stopping to take a break. It may seem like a simple reason, but no other story this year has had that sort of effect on me - and believe me, there are a lot of great fics that are eligible this year.

Best Plot

The Thinking Man's Guide to Destroying the World (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=513306), by Cutlerine - This satire fic took two somewhat overused ideas (a human gaining Pokemon powers in a journey-fic setting) and not only made them work, but made them feel very believable and realistic. If that weren't enough, the author also used several characteristics of the Hoenn region that you probably wouldn't think about and made them a key element in his plot. That takes serious forethought.

Most Original Overall

Absconditus Infernsus (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=523254), by moonlightning and kjt - I don't know if they're still working on this story, but this is something that's probably never been thought of before - at least, not in this aspect. They took a concept that has been beaten like a long-dead horse (Pokemon coming into our world) and put an entirely new spin on it. Oh, and did I mention that it's a collab-fic that's written as seamlessly as a fic created by one person?

Best Expansion of Canon

Lull (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=425512) - Here's where I get to explain more about this gem of a fic. The authoress who wrote the story used the Cresselia event (where the boy in Canalave is overcome by a nightmare caused by Darkrai and the player has to get a Lunar Wing to cure the boy) to great effect. She not only adhered to the events that were given to her - which is a challenge in itself - but she crafted a story that was entirely her own as well. To be quite honest, this is one of the most original expansions of canon I've ever seen.

Best Original Species

Ixodida - Anima Ex Machina (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=427130), by JX Valentine - I'm a longtime lurker when it comes to this story (and I'm ashamed to admit it). Still, I've read the entire fic, and I have to say that the ixodida species is just...wow. The species as a whole is just extremely complex, and it's very hard to figure out what their ultimate goal is. They're clearly not human, but...well, I'm doing a very poor job at explaining them. You're just going to have to read this story yourself and see how purely awesome they are.

Best Horror Fic

Wendigo (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=490939), by Dawn_Hero - I still haven't figured out if the Wendigo in this story is supposed to be a Pokemon or not, but I don't think I want to know what it is. This is a very scary oneshot, and the ending alone was enough to make me shudder for about a minute. If you're a fan of horror, read this fic right now.

Best Comedy Fic

The Retelling of Pokemon Colosseum (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=246389), by bobandbill - This is another fic where I haven't posted a review, but have read the entire story thus far. At first, it started out as a fic that made me crack up at times, but it wasn't exactly more than that. To be honest, I'm amazed by how much this fic has evolved. It's not just a comedy fic anymore; it's now a beautiful story in its own right. Don't get me wrong; the comedy that made it so famous is still very much there - and there's nothing wrong with comedy. I just have to mention that it's grown into something that everyone can enjoy, whether they like comedy or not.

Best Fantasy/Sci-fi Fic

Anima Ex Machina (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=427130) - A new specie falling from outer space and wreaking destruction across Hoenn? Awesome! Bill (who is completely in-character, by the way) appearing as a main character? Sweet! One of the species infecting Bill and creating an awesome plot in the process? Yeah, I'm just going to nominate this brilliant story. I don't mean to offend anyone else, but this is the best sci-fi fic I've seen in the Pokemon fandom.

Most Frightening Scene

"Mommy... It... It ate Daddy...It told me that-"

"Ma'am, what about your husband? Ma'am?"

I disregarded the operator for a second, looking down at my daughter, horrified. "It... It told you it ate Daddy? When did it tell you that...?"

"No, Mommy... That's not what it told me. It..." She gave a horrified sob, burrowing her face into my chest.

"Katelyn, what did it tell you?!" The lamp above us flickered off, coating the room with darkness as the phone in my hand went silent. A shiver ran down my spine as I stared at my daughter through the darkness. "Katelyn...?" The door to the room slowly creaked open through the darkness and low, gurgling noises filled the air. "Katelyn, what did it tell you?" I whispered. Tears began to roll down my cheeks as hot breath hit the back of my neck.

"Mommy... It told me that it was hungry and would be coming back with some friends."

Wendigo (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=490939)

Best Human Main Character

Lucas - Lull (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=425512) - Lucas is just an amazing main character. This is someone who has been through so much more than someone of his age should ever have to handle. He contradicts himself in both his beliefs and actions, he pushes people away when they try to help him, and he unconsciously emulates the same people he dislikes (Cynthia and Cyrus). Still, despite all of his flaws, despite all of his shortcomings as a person, he has just as many redeeming qualities as well. That kind of character is someone that I will always cheer for, no matter who they are.

Best Non-Human Main Character

Robin Goodfellow/Puck - The Thinking Man's Guide to Destroying the World (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=513306) - A Rotom who is so much more than he seems, Puck is probably one of my favorite characters ever. Of all time. He constantly spouts off all sorts of pop-culture references and jokes, especially when the other characters don't want to hear them. He seems harmless, but he harbors a much darker side of him than you would want to believe. Still, he's a fresh, innovative character that I loved almost immediately after I learned his name. As such, he fully deserves this nomination.

Best Human Villain

Captain Liam Everton - Operation GEAR: The Victory Star of Fate (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=549083), by The Great Butler - I have to admit that I completely misjudged this guy when I first read this fic. Everton is a very frightening villain who has a goal, the means to reach it, and the motivation to do whatever is necessary to make sure his dreams become a reality. Everything he does is all part of his plan, and he leaves nothing to chance. He's also cold-blooded enough to kill anyone who gets in his way, even if they don't have the capability to ruin his plan - and when I say anyone, I mean anyone.

Best Non-Human Villain

Zero, The Thinking Man's Guide to Destroying the World (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=513306) - I'm not going to spoil anything, but let's just say that he's destroying the world and everyone in it for no reason other than sheer sport. Yes, I'm serious. Zero is almost always a step ahead of everyone, especially the main characters, and he takes every single detail into account, no matter how insignificant it might be. Even when he's not a step ahead of everyone, even when a part of his plan goes awry (which is extremely rare), he takes it in stride and adapts to the new circumstances. He's a villain without pity or remorse, and he has no qualms about what he's doing. How can I not nominate him?

Most Dedicated Writer

EonMaster_One - Let me see why he should be nominated...two journey fics? Seven years of writing experience? Uh, yeah, it's got to be this guy. No question.

Most Helpful Reviewer

Breezy - Her reviews are insightful, detailed, and balanced. The constructive critique in her reviews is fair, and she tells you what you did right as well. If that's not enough, her advice is the main reason why my story came into being. If that's not helpful, I don't know what is.

Yay nominations for stuff I don't recall seeing in this thread yet.

Overall Fiction Awards
Best Pokemon Chaptered Fic

Stars (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=319986), by Dramatic Melody. One of the fics I followed for a good while and enjoyed it all the way through. A nice plot and take on Jirachi and certain items in the games with believable and entertaining characters.

Best Pokemon One-Shot

A Day in the Life of a Gym Leader (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=13692410&postcount=49), by disclaimer065. disclaimer065 has a number of one-shots about gym leaders in this thread but Blaine's entry I felt was the most enjoyable of those. Solid pacing and portrayal of Blaine's thoughts and feelings with quite the sweet ending.

Perish: The One-shots [Normal] (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=12496284&postcount=23), by Dramatic Melody. Again a one-shot from a series that I thought the best thus far. It played with the theme of the series quite nicely and had a moving ending that finished the story well.

[B]Best Non-Pokemon Chaptered Fic

The Ripple Effect (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=430827), by Zadros. Strong characterisation and many intertwining plots that slowly fall into place with each other nicely is why I'm nominating this.

Best Non-Pokemon One-Shot

Who Do You Think You Are (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=503689), by Dawn_Hero. It was a well-written story which made its point rather well in its ending and furthermore in the delivery of the rest which served as a good set-up for said ending. Simple and enjoyable.

Other Fic Awards
Best Plot

Never In The Wrong Time or Wrong Place (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=268560), by Griff4815. A very intriguing story which does far more than the average trainer fic; full of strong characters and each one with their own motivations and impact to the story as a whole.

Tabula Rasa (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=542138), by purple_drake. Plot is written all over this fic; it's the premise and set-up that really grabs your attention from the beginning and the way it has continued thus far is very engaging and entertaining.

Best Description

Tabula Rasa (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=542138), by purple_drake. I think the scene in the latest chapter is a good example of this, but solid description is more of a consistent feature of the story already. =p

Best Characterization in a Short Story

Blaine, A Day in the Life of a Gym Leader (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=13692410&postcount=49), by disclaimer065.

[B]Most Heartbreaking Fic

Perish: The One-shots [Normal] (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=12496284&postcount=23), by Dramatic Melody. The ending certainly was heartbreaking for myself. A well-worded finish.

The Life of a Bulbasaur (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=525961), by Bulbaclaw. The way the condition of the protagonist slowly degenerated over time was quite saddening, and despite the hope that things would get better it ended sadly.

Pokemon Genre Awards

Best Trainer Fic

Never In The Wrong Time or Wrong Place (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=268560), by Griff4815.

Best Horror Fic

Into The Shadows (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=542025), by donotlookatdiagram. The premise of a criminal team (arguably one of the worst Pokemon have had in the games thus far) succeeding and continuing to do so, with every little thing going wrong especially to characters who get some time in the spotlight qualifies as horror for myself.

Best Human Villain

Sirius in Stars (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=319986), by Dramatic Melody. What isn't good about him?

Sakaki in Tabula Rasa (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=542138), by purple_drake. What he does and how he goes about it makes you love to hate him, which is helped by a few particular pieces of dialogue as well.

Best Non-Human Villain

Daggerback in Never In The Wrong Time or Wrong Place (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=268560), by Griff4815. It was good to see this Nidoking in another chapter at his menacing best.

Fic Moments Awards
Most Frightening Scene

The ending paragraph of Chapter 2 (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=13464825&postcount=2) of Into The Shadows (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=542025), by donotlookatdiagram. The scene is frightening not for the content itself but more what you know it'll lead to after everything that has happened beforehand.

Most Heartwarming Scene
In Chapter 7 (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=13722396&postcount=21) of
The kiss scene between Aina and Wataru. Very nicely written throughout the whole scene.

Best Action Scene

The battle in Chapter 22 (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showpost.php?p=11952465&postcount=130) of Stars (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=319986), by Dramatic Melody. What do you get when people with supernatural powers from Pokemon items fight each other? Awesome, that's what.

“That recipe makes my recipe look like carbonated water.” Throh replied. from Poke Punch-Out!! (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=543313&page=3) by Hilijix

I could almost see a smile cross its face as it gave a deep growl before jumping out into the night. from Wendigo (http://serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=490939) by Dawn_Hero

Instantly, the cool wind whipped his hair around and tossed Meghan’s sunhat off of her head as if it had a mind of its own.

He landed clumsily, and Luna, Emory, and Vesta landed with him. from "They boy got an idea.

He had reacted in a single flash of rage and had murdered another human being.[/SPOILER]

“And this is your last day on Earth.” , Angels & Demons (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=449666) by chosen_one386

Most Memorable Quote
“I don't mind losing”–she didn't mind a lot of things, he noted–“and I have no regrets about my battle with Alder. But I will be back. Trust me. Until then, I suppose I have 'other' things to do.” She winked. from Option Other by Breezy

The boy tilted his head to the left and shrugged his left shoulder, pressing his ear against it. His brow furrowed. “The word 'go,' a verb, often defined as 'to move or travel,'” he began, brow relaxing the further he spoke. He straightened his head. “‘You're,’ the contraction of ‘you are’ with ‘you are’ being ‘I am’ in this case. ‘Not,’ an adverb, used to express negation, denial, refusal. Therefore with my powers combined I, Brendan Birch, am not going.” from The Battle Frontier: A Brendan and May Adventure (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=533114) by Breezy

Dragonfree is working on it, but she is very busy. I don't know when she will have it.

I'd like to encourage everyone to take advantage of this extra time to look at as many of the nominated fics as possible. You never know what you might like!

Not sure if there's a reason for this, but I noticed that a few of my nominations weren't included on the final list. Specifically, these:

Best Human Main Character - Hilda, Clichestorm (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=529963) by Ysavvryl

Best Non-Human Main Character - Kyurem, Clichestorm (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=529963) by Ysavvryl

Best Non-Human Supporting Character - Victini, Clichestorm (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=529963) by Ysavvryl

Not sure if there was a specific reason these were left off, or if they were just missed.

Thanks. I thought maybe I'd made some mistake in my nominations post that I didn't get fixed.
