Armored Core (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?580686-Armored-Core-(PG-13))

(Rated PG-13 for violence, language, and implied sexual situations)

This will be our discussion thread from here on in. I'm not closing signups yet, but they will be once we get into enough of the story. Again, this RPG will be very focused on character development and interaction. For informational purposes, I've provided the information from the signup thread below.

The year is 2099 and the world is a very different place. Grand superpowers control most of the world, with the rest ravaged by war, controlled by massive corporations, or barely holding on to independence. In the midst of the societal upheaval that resulted in this world; a new type of weapon was developed, one that would forever change the face of war.

This weapon was first developed in the year 2012. It was the Mobile Armored Core, an advanced humanoid weapons platform that turned a single soldier into an army. So began the new race, to see which nation could build the best and greatest Armored Cores and dominate the battlefield. Contracting this development to various weapons manufacturers and energy companies put several corporations in a uniquely powerful position; the money the world governments spent on weapons development made them exceedingly rich and gave them influence over the world's affairs as never before.

By 2020, the world was consumed by social and political upheaval. Four great superpowers emerged, controlling more than 50% of the world's surface. The remaining half of the world became divided by corporations and local tyrants, who fought and competed with each other and the superpowers for control of the various resources available. The unrest finally stabilized by 2090, and borders were firmly established.

This didn't stop the battles, however, and fighting still raged throughout the southern hemisphere. The corporations, eager to profit from the conflict, established operations in the various territories. They sold weapons and medical supplies to each and every side, profiting greatly from the bloodshed. The corporations competed even with one another by sponsoring the different warring factions. Back in their home countries, their ever-increasing power gave them more influence over world politics and policies than ever before. Together, they established the League (of Corporations) to serve as a meeting place and official political presence for their collective interests. But the League served another purpose.

After the ceasefire, the nations dismissed their ace Armored Core pilots (the Irregulars) as per the rules of the New Geneva Convention. The pilots, who had built themselves around their skills, had nowhere to go, and were otherwise swept back into society without notice. Taking advantage of the pilots' desires to matter, the League established an organization called Collared, a pilot management organization that served as a watering hole for mission agency brokers carrying out orders for corporations. The demand for pilots in the conflict regions quickly made Collared (and in turn the League) one of the most influential and wealthy forces on the planet, and the pilots themselves became absurdly wealthy as well (though most of their earnings went to the upkeep of their machines).

You are one of these pilots under the employ of Collared, taking missions at the behest of corporations, countries, or independent parties, sometimes working against your previous employers and then helping them the next day. For most pilots, it's all business; there's no hard feelings. Yesterday you were contacted by a Collared representative and assigned to a rarely-formed team of pilots to quell an uprising in Madagascar. True, it's unusual to contract more than two Irregulars for any given, but you're about to learn a disturbing new truth, there are more Irregulars than previously thought, enough to lead to full-scale global war...

=====World Overview=====

The United Nations is essentially defunct, though it still exists in some form, maintaining a peacekeeping presence in and controlling parts of Africa as well as having "embassies" throughout the rest of the world. It really serves as a place where the countries can get together and deny trying to destroy one another (while secretly conspiring with everyone else to destroy everyone else).

===Superpowers===

Chinese Federation (China, Korea, Southeast Asia): established by swift Chinese expansion in the mid 21st Century, the Chinese Federation is the most populous empire in the world. Advocating unyielding loyalty to the ideals of China, dissention is not tolerated.

European Union: composed of most of modern-day Europe, the EU was forced to form a central government due to the presence of both the Russian Empire and the Chinese Federation. With pooled resources, the Union was better able to establish as a world superpower. In the following years, conflict with Russia would leave much of Eastern European region battle scarred and desolate, resulting in a huge migration to the west, now slowly being overrun by poverty and crime. The governing bodies are attempting to solve this problem, but efforts have been largely ineffective, and they fear slipping into tyranny.

North American Alliance (USA +Canada): an alliance formed to ease trade restrictions and present a powerful front to the rest of the world, the NAA is the "birthplace" of the modern corporation. Citizens live relatively peaceful and easy lives, though government is highly influenced by the corporations. The average American citizen is largely unaffected by the corporate influence on government, but the gap between the rich and poor has grown tremendously, leaving several areas rife with crime and poverty, and thus easy pickings for corporate takeovers.

Russian Empire: composed of much of the old Soviet block, the new Russia is very little like the old USSR in terms of its ideology. Controlled now by mobsters and former intelligence officers, it is rife with corruption and extorts even the corporations that make Russia their home.

===Autonomous Zones===

Australia-New Zealand: this nation has been faced with many difficulties. Their rich supply of resources and available land made it a target of many countries and corporations. However, the unforgiving environment and well-supplied defenses has allowed them to remain autonomous despite repeated encroachment.

India: an isolated nation due to the Himalayan Mountains, India has been able to maintain independence through its use of manpower and strategic buildup. Much advancement is made here in the field of engineering and medical research, making India one of the top developers of new technology.

Israel: as one of the main pioneers of the Armored Core technology, Israel was on the bleeding edge of the weapon system's development. After the use of the Cores became widespread, Israel developed the Allegorical Manipulation System, resulting in exponentially more powerful combat units. Because of the nation's emphasis on technology and military superiority, a "merging" of corporation and government resulted, leading to a uniquely stable country in a chronically unstable region of the world.

Japan: Japanese scientists were among the chief collaborators for the mechanical aspects of the Armored Core technology. Due to their proficiency for high-level use of the Cores, Japan was able to maintain independence from both the Chinese Federation and Russia. As in Israel, the Japanese were able to strike a delicate balance between the government and the corporations.

===Volatile Combat Zones===

Africa: the countries here are either colonies of the United Nations or controlled by warlords and corporations. Like with the South American corporations and drug cartels, life working under the corporations is comparatively/relatively safe, but the corporations are not held accountable for anything that happens to you. Life under the warlords essentially is the same, though there are much fewer rules to follow. The trade-off is that the warlords can do essentially anything they want.

Antarctica: considered neutral territory, but due to the presence of vast resources below the ice sheets, control of it is highly coveted. Rights to the resources are contested between the various corporations and countries.

Middle East: birthplace of the Armored Core-based combat. Most countries here have been ravaged by war, uprising, more war, and more uprising. Now they're ruled either by local warlords, religious extremists, or oil corporations seeking to drain the last bit of cash from a resource that's less and less in demand.

South America (Mexico, Central, + South America): ruled by various drug cartels and pharmaceutical corporations vying for control over resources, all of which rose to power after the collapse of the regions' established governments. The corporations are well-supplied and generally keep the order quite well, though there's no defying them if you live in their zones.

Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea): Individually, these states are well organized, but are constantly fighting against Chinese expansion. They receive support from Australia-New Zealand, however, and there are talks of forming a "States of Oceania".

===Corporations===

Corporations have evolved far beyond what they were in the year 2011. Now, corporations are multi-tiered entities of incredible social and political power. Each corporation is almost a nation in and unto of itself, involved in medical research, weapons development, and resource management. The essential goal for all corporations is to gain more power and influence over the people. Corporations are technically beholden to the laws of whatever country they're established in, but their monetary and political power enables them to bypass most legal troubles without concern. Corporations have headquarters in countries throughout the world, but hold total power within the volatile zones, where there are no strong governments to oppose them. The corporations have formed the League, a counterpart to the United Nations.

Rayleonard: A rising North American energy corporation and major source of AC generators. As the leader in the field of Lumidium technology, they specialize almost exclusively in ACs in their military development. Rayleonard's engineers are known for their ambitious designs and consistent ability to think outside the box. Despite distributing Next parts to a variety of other Companies, Rayleonard keeps its industry secrets tightly under wraps. Oberon is currently Rayleonard's closest working partner

Oberon: Longstanding military electronics corporation based in northern Europe. In addition to being the world's leading Lumidium technology company, Oberon produces top-of-the-line computing devices, sensors, and other electronics. Though offering weapons of impressive, cutting-edge functionality, their creations are plagued with a dangerous fragility. Oberon has strong ties with Rayleonard.

Leonidas: Leonidas is a corporation centered in Southeast Asia and the Middle East known for its strong mass production line. Integrated industrial conglomerate and de facto leader of the south Asian economic sphere, they are well-known for mass production fueled by almost limitless manpower, and for their unique and imaginative weaponry. The mix of quarreling regions under their control gives them ample opportunities to test their products, ensuring their effectiveness in real battle conditions.

Genesis: A small Israeli company, as well as a research institution, Genesis was one of the first to develop and use the AMS technology. The AMS allowed their test subjects to enter battle with heightened battle abilities, gaining them many military victories. Since then, Genesis has registered their former test subjects as official pilots, and has adopted a policy to utilize them in actual battle.

Millennium: This corporate conglomerate is based in North America. It is one of the largest corporations in the world. Although they are not shy in publicizing the strengthening of their monopolistic system of exerting control over the government, few dare to speak publicly against them because of the magnitude and extent of their power.

Interior Union: The Interior Union boasts an overall high level of technological prowess, and is by far the leading company in the field of laser technology. As well as being Europe's number one high-tech firm, they also control the fossil fuel market, making them an extremely important company to GA.

Global Armaments: GA is the world's largest corporation, centered around the economic hub of the Pacific Rim. An advocate of standard military company, their products have gained much praise due to their power and reliability in battle. Global Armaments was a powerful corporation in the United States, Japan, China, the Philippines, and Australia during the waning years of the sovereign nations. They used this massive base of influence to grab huge amounts of power. While Global Armaments has stakes in Leonidas for rations and Interior Union for fossil fuels, they are not on good terms with BFF or Rayleonard.

Bernard and Felix Foundation: BFF is a European company that is known for their extremely precise weaponry and is one of the largest companies in that sphere. BFF was one of the pioneers of the powerful Arms Fort combat deployment and superiority system. They have a deeply adversarial relationship with GA, though are closely tied to Rosenthal.

Rosenthal: A military corporation affiliated with The League, they have a tremendous amount of capital. They tend to hide in the shadows of BFF, but provide well-built, all-purpose, balanced weaponry. Their weapon designs are quite unique, and their name is well known across the world. Of all the corporations, Rosenthal plays only minor roles in direct conflict situations. In fact this company can be considered almost benign as it is usually inactive or neutral in major combat events.

Arisawa Heavy Industries: AS heavy industries company with a long tradition in the economic hub of the Pacific Rim. They specialize in a wide range of military vehicles and explosives, and the toughness of their products has gained them much praise in the field. Takafumi Arisawa, the 43rd president of the company, is also known for being a superior pilot, making him the first company president to also see combat.

Collared: Collared is a pilot management organization under the jurisdiction of the League. They manage all ranking issues and organize Order Matches (non-lethal competition between Irregulars). Like the League, Collared has become a mere shell of what it was intended to be. Today, it is nothing more than a watering hole for mission agency brokers carrying out orders for corporations.

=====Mobile Armored Cores=====

General Overview:
The Mobile Armored Cores (ACs/Mobile ACs) are the ultimate expression of individual military might, turning a single pilot into a force capable of eliminating hundreds of standard military units. There are several tiers of pilots: the standard pilots, the Normals, pilot generic ACs, ranging from two-legged "walker" platforms to humanoid combat models. They are powerful, to be sure, but completely outclassed by the blisteringly fast and supremely powerful machines of the next generation. The newer machines are much harder to pilot, requiring extreme reaction time and control; without which they are nearly impossible to pilot and are largely ineffective. ACs are powered by a newly-discovered type of material called Luminium. Inert Luminium is a superconductor and is built into the various parts of the AC's body, allowing for the range and power of the machine's movements. Luminium is processed into its active form at various processing plants and configured into power cells. Luminium reactor engines have almost no harmful byproducts and depleted Luminium power cells is easily and safely disposed of, making it one of the most valuable and sought-after resources in the world.

Allegorical Manipulation System:
To enable effective piloting, the Genesis corporation developed the Allegorical Manipulation System (AMS), linking the pilot's nervous system with the ACs electronics systems, allowing for direct 1:1 manipulation. High AMS compatibility is a rarity, leaving only a few handfuls of people with the ability to pilot the newer ACs. But these pilots are exponentially more powerful than their low AMS counterparts, able to overcome threats that would seem otherwise insurmountable. Pilots with lower than average AMS compatibility generally compensate by using heavier machine with higher ammunition count weaponry. Pilots with very low AMS compatibility cannot use the new generations of ACs, as the psychic stress caused by the AMS could make them go insane or even lead to total nervous system collapse. All humans, however, have some degree of AMS compatibility, and those with low compatibility can over time "learn" to use AMS. Pilots of the new generation machines are referred to as Irregulars.

Pilots and Operators:
The high combat speed and extreme skill required by pilots to effectively use their Armored Cores leaves little room for distractions. For this reason, most pilots work alongside an operator. Operators are support personnel who are "partners," so to speak, of those who pilot Armored Cores. While they do not control the AC itself, their jobs usually consist of remotely monitoring the unit's vital stats, updating the pilot of changes in combat (such as the arrival of reinforcements) or directing them towards designated targets; this allows the Armored Core pilot to focus their attention entirely on combat.

Equipment and Machine Overview:
The Armored Cores are divided into three weight categories: light, medium, and heavy. The lightest are the fastest and most agile, but also the most fragile. They specialize in lighter weaponry, but can equip heavier cannons and missiles at the cost of their speed and maneuverability (a dangerous trade-off). Heavy ACs have massive physical power and stopping capability with a much higher load capacity for weapons and ammunition, but are far slower. The legs types of an AC also determine its movement and combat type. There are three types of legs: biped, quadruped, and tank. Biped and quadruped legs come in the three weight categories, but biped legs are also divided by standard or reverse-joint structure. The reverse-joint structure has less load capacity, but is supremely suited for jumping and aerial combat. Quadruped legs are the opposite, geared solely for ground superiority and maneuverability. Tank "legs" are different, coming in two types, tread and hover. The tread tanks have the highest load capacity and can even store full-sized weapons in specialized compartments, but are slow and difficult to maneuver. The hover tanks have very low load capacity, but combine the ground and aerial maneuverability of the quadruped and reverse-joint leg types.

Finally decided to make the mockups of the various ACs you guys submitted. The newer ones are of much lower quality b/c I'm stuck with a small, low-res screen. But I think it gets the idea across.

I've begun to think about how this RPG will be divided, and came to the conclusion that we just reached the end of the Prologue, or as I've titled it "This is a Call to Arms." We're now reaching Stage 1, Episode 1: "Intro to Structural Integrity"

So after a week of no Internet/Phone/TV following the Horrorcane of 2012, I've finally got it back and can get back to posting.

On top of that, Sequel is back and looking to get into the swing of things again. So I'm going to get to working on a post here to get things moving on again. You're all welcome to post something for the interim.

So I'm gonna give Planeswalkers and Armored Core one more shot now that I've finished my work for this semester and only have to think about getting ready for the move. Hopefully things can move along again.

I plan on making things a bit more interactive on your parts. Battle plans/prep, what missions we take, where we end up going. The world here has some rules, but you're also allowed to make up a lot of stuff as we go. If your character has a plan or storyline you want to move on, that works. I have a default direction for things, but other than a few critical points, it's mostly a placeholder for stuff that all of you come up with.

Dude, this seems so, so awesome O.O

And I'm sorry for not posting here for ages. My pc's hard drive was bust and I had to get a new one, so I effectively lost all my AC stuff (only RPG whose data I hadnt backed up on my netbook) so its taking time to re organize myself...

And just for your visualization, here is a link to the various enemy types that are in the area. They're all piloted by "Normals", and are first, second, and third generation ACs.
This image (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20101005224029/armoredcore/images/3/36/10-4-2010_4-59-25_PM.png) has the First Generation Mobile Turret Armored Core (MTs) "chicken walker" on the right and a Third Generation standard Armored Core Normal on the left. The MT has missiles and rockets, the AC has missiles and a grenade launcher.
This (http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110119191015/armoredcore/images/7/7f/GOPPERT.jpg) is another Third Gen Normal. This time armed with a laser rifle and heavy shield
And This (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100719083914/armoredcore/images/a/aa/7-19-2010_2-38-15_AM.jpg) is a Second Gen type, Quad-legged, with a big shield and gattling gun.

The first two generations of Normals are rather slow and not very maneuverable, especially compared to what we're piloting. The Third Gens, however, have a higher range and rate of movement, including a limited normal-boost (no quick-boosts for them, however).

Here's a bit of a teaser for you all:

"This is what a broken world looks like, Clair," Lance said. The city below them burned; pillars of smoke clawing at the skies like so many torture-twisted fingers. "This is all that's waiting for us."

But even as he spoke, that faint smile never left his face.

"Isn't it beautiful?"

==="You've lost everything."===

"I'm sorry, Theo," Serra said, pulling his jacket tighter around herself. She couldn't bring herself to look him in the eye. "I just...I can't."

Theo almost-growled and ran a hand through his hair. He was at his wit's end. "You can't keep stringing me along like this."

"You don't understand," she said, pleading. "You can't understand."

"Is it him? Is it?" Theo demanded. He needed real answers. "Do you even know what he is? Can't you see him the way the rest of us do?"

==="You've thrown the rest away."===

"This is more than any of us were ever trained for," Davis protested, flinging his arms wide. "We're soldiers--on our best days. This isn't our job!"

==="And all that's left is fire..."===

The blade cut deep, and the pain almost knocked Lance unconscious. But the dark thing behind his eyes flared itself to prominence and chased away all notions of oblivion. His vision sharpened and he pulled the blade from his side.

==="...and rage..."===

"That your first time?" Lance asked from the dimly-lit shadows.

Beatrice was silent, staring wide-eyed at the blood on her shaking hands. She nodded.

Lance laughed. "It gets easier."

==="...and blood."===

"I've calculated our chances of success at 47 percent," Kotomi said, sliding into her Core. The controls and harnesses clicked into place around her. "Which will only decrease should additional enemy reinforcements arrive."

"Are you kidding?" Benjamin groaned.

"That's actually good news," Juliana said with a smirk.

"Those are the best odds we've had all week!" Claire exclaimed.

==="You can call yourself whatever you want."===

"He'll get everyone killed," Mariette said. "You all know this. He's unstable."
---

Lance drove his fist into his masked adversary's gut and slid his knife in between the plates of the man's armor.
---
"Murderous. A Sociopath."
---

He buried the knife to the hilt in the man's eye. And slashed it across another's throat. And that same almost-smile never left his face.
---
"He's Da Vinci with a knife," she protested.

"And on our side," said Davis.

==="It doesn't matter."===

Beatrice punched the Imperatrix through a concrete wall and gunned down a trio of incoming Normals. "There's too many of them! Where the hell is our backup!?"

==="At our core we're all the same thing."===

"I know what you are. And I know what you're doing," Theo shouted over the pouring rain. Bone-drenched and half-shivering. Though not from the cold.

If Lance was at all concerned with his confrontation, it didn't show.

"I know what you're doing to her, to them--to us. And I won't let it go on."

==="Monsters."===

"There's no way that I could know what you've experienced, right?" she said. Her eyes flashing in the artificial light, dancing with a hint of blackening shadow. "I couldn't possibly feel that need. Like a thousand hiding voices whispering "this is who you are". And you fight the pressure. The growing need rising like a wave. Prickling and teasing and prodding to be fed. But the whispering gets louder, until they're screaming "now!" And it's the only voice you hear. The only voice you want to hear. And you belong to it. To this … shadow self. To this …"

"Dark Passenger," Lance said, full of reverence.

"Yes," Talya said, a coy smile spreading, like a dance, across her lips. "The Dark Passenger."

You should do trailers, Kamotz. Seriously, that teaser got me super hyped. I want Colette to prod incessantly into Lance's head, dammit <.<

And I want to get into the personal questions, too. Davis yelling "We're just soldiers!" made me instantly think up of this awesome response from Mariette. Something along the lines of "We're humans, we're people. Our profession is the occupation we chose to spend our time on, not a limit to our potential or a limiter of our actions. Soldiers, scientists... Lunatics; whatever you decide to call yourself, it is a title that should never hinder what you chose to do. Don't become a slave to a name and waste away your future."

Because I'm betting that scene has some sort of "grander purpose" behind it, and Colette is firmly against people shackling themselves like this. Especially if it affects her chances to achieve greater levels of influence and/or power.

In attempts to keep the anticipation and momentum going, I've tried figuring out who would play our characters if this were taken to live-action and I had free reign to cast whomever I wanted.

Serra Bradley - Sarah Carter (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0141931/?ref_=sr_2)
Claire Leblanc - Olivia Wilde (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1312575/?ref_=sr_1)

Theodore Faulkner - Sam Worthington (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0941777/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) or Jude Law (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000179/?ref_=sr_1)
Ezekiel Arkwright - Paul Bettany (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0079273/?ref_=sr_1)
Cynthia Young - Charlize Theron (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000234/?ref_=sr_1)
Davis Alenko - Matt Bomer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093589/)
Mariette Colette - Ali Larter (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005123/)

In an attempt to really get into the heads of our characters, I'd really like for people to think about (or actually fill out) this Character Questionnaire (http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?316674-Character-Questionnaire&p=11976119#post11976119). You don't have to do any of it, but it's a great way to think more in-depth on the characters and for us to really get this going again.

Finally got a post up! I lack sleep tgough and am still not completely in the clear, work-wise, so sorry if something seems... out of place with it. I'll also be gone most of next week abroad. But I'll try to post more regularly now anyway!

Also, the teaser was pretty cool (I could definitely imagine it as a trailer, with sound and everything, ha), even if it did make it seem like everything would revolve around Lance eventually. I hope that isn’t the case and that this won’t become a one-man show though. I like our current Libya group a lot, because everyone makes mistakes and reacts strongly to things around them. None of them is perfect, and the situation's not focused only on one member or what they're doing. So Lance, if you wanna join the team, you better make mistakes and get shocked/surprised too every once in a while, you hear?

As for the actors/actresses... woah. I feel like you really nailed some of those. Davis, Theo (with the second link you posted), Benjamin and Juliana in particular all seemed pretty much like how I imagined them, at least.

The questionnaire I will have to fill up later. I've seen that one before (even outside of Serebii) and recall filling it with characters way back when. Should be fun to do that again.

Sorry for the long post guys, but I wanted to get this moving again.

Don't worry, GH. Lance's prominence in the "trailer" is due mainly to the fact that I know him better than the other (everyone else's) characters and it was through his story/personality that I was best able to bring up possible situations in which the other characters might react in ways dramatic and tantalizing enough to be used in a "trailer."

So...do you guys want to continue this? We're all basically back for the first time in a while, so we could really get this going.

Working on a post as well as those Character Questionnaires Kamotz posted a while back. Just been trying to catch up on everything. That trailer was impressive.

Quick Question: Kamotz, can I leave Theo in your hands during an actual mission? Trying to keep tabs on everything going on as well as improvising during his POV is a little more time consuming than I can handle I'm afraid.

Also, should I post the questionnaires here or PM them to you?

@Question: Sure. I can take care of that. Once Lance and Serra join the team, I'll take the main operating "info dump" stuff from Theo and give it to her.

You can post them here. I think that's a good enough idea. If there's something you want to keep close to the chest, then you can withhold that info.

Okay, good, cause that would help me get my posts out a lot easier. And I apologize again for my long absence.

And awesome. I think it'd be interesting to see how everyone answers the questionnaires. Its supposed to give insight into the character after all. We might be able to get a few things to add into the RP our of it.

Another spoiler for all you lucky kids.

All she wanted was to drown her sorrows, to not spend so much time feeling things anymore. At least, that's what she kept telling herself. Like a mantra. Repeating it over and over each morning, hoping she would eventually believe it. The memories hurt. The failure hurt. It was better to feel nothing than to feel that pain.

Yes. That was it. The lie. Always, the lie. Of course it was a lie. What she felt was nothing. No regret. No remorse. No shame or sense of betrayal. Nothing. And in the end, feeling drunk was better than feeling nothing at all.

How had Lance phrased it?

"There was a lie that I told myself until it became the truth."

Yes. That was her lie. That she was hurting. That the drinking took the pain away. And sometimes, if she got drunk enough, she'd even believe the lie herself.

Not tonight though. She could feel the eyes on her. She'd gotten very good at that. And that feeling, of being watched--tracked and hunted--set something stirring within her. A sense of uneasiness and agitation. Twitching behind her eyes, setting her teeth on edge.

"Can I help you, gentlemen?" she asked, not taking her gaze away from the swirl of amber liquid in the glass. She forced a slur into her speech, wobbled heavier, swayed in her seat--let them underestimate her. Let them overestimate just how drunk she really was.

"Miss Leblanc," said the man with the watchy-eyes. His stoic, bald-headed companion said nothing. The mouth and the muscle. Claire almost laughed. "You're looking..." He struggled to find the right word.

Claire smirked. It meant he wasn't there as a threat. Something else was going on.

She smiled hazily, "Fantastic? Free? Alive?" she offered the man. "Very, very drunk?" He didn't respond, so she just laughed again and downed her drink before motioning for another. "What can I do for you?"

"We have a proposition for you."

"You're propositioning me?" she chuckled, and took the drink offered by the bartender.

"Not like that," the man almost-stuttered. "A business venture. A job."

"So I'd get paid even?" Claire laughed sarcastically. She threw her drink back. "You think I need money? What a novel idea."

"'Paid' in a sense," the man smirked. Beside him, his bald companion remained stoic as ever. "Compensation, I suppose, would fit better."

"Compensation?" Claire raised an eyebrow, slipping out of her faked drunken stupor for a brief moment.

"For...slights against you," the man clarified. "Monetary compensation for the past...year, is it?"

"Closer to two," Claire muttered.

"You'd be allowed to pilot again, of course," the man said. He didn't even bother trying to hide his smirk. "You'd be allowed to see your family. All we need from you is to track down a few...troublesome individuals."

"Who?" Claire said, disconnectedly, just staring blankly into her glass--trying to decide if she was excited, nervous, or just drunk. The man pulled out a tablet and slid it over the bar towards her. She recognized each of the eight names and pictures on the dossier. Of course she did.

"Serra Bradley, Beatrice Victorique, Theodore Faulkner, Cynthia Young, Davis Alenko, Benjamin Eisler, Juliana Werberg, and Mariette Colette," the man said, implacably smooth and crisp and clear. "As well as their associates: Commander Jason Ford, Avrahm Marshe, and Professor Ian Jarnefeldt."

"I don't know where they are," Claire said. She pushed the tablet back towards the man.

"Of course not," he said, pushing it back to her. "You haven't seen them in almost two years."

"You've been watching?"

"Of course we have."

"What about the others?" Claire asked, feigning disinterest. "Yamagishi. Arkwright?"

"Accounted for," said the man. His gaze never left her.

"Lance Donovan?" Claire asked carefully, playing her last trump card.

"Lance Donovan is dead," the man said quickly, brushing her off with a wave of his hand. "Died two years ago. You were there. You saw it yourself."

"If you really believe Lance Donovan is dead, you're dumber than you look." Claire turned back to her drink, though she kept him in the corner of her eye. The man smirked, almost audibly. "Ah, so you know otherwise." She swiveled in her seat and stared at him. She pointed to his smile "But you're smiling, obviously."

"Obviously," he said, smirking.

"The only reason you'd be smiling, knowing Lance Donovan is alive, is if you weren't worried," she said, counting off on her fingers. "Not a smart move. Of course, the only reason you wouldn't be worried is if you knew where he is. And the only reason you'd know where he is, is if he wasn't there by choice."

"You're not at all the incompetent drunk you make yourself out to be," the man said.

"And you're greatly underestimating your own incompetence," she said. She glanced back at the tablet. "Why do you want them?"

"I'm an agent of Collared, a liaison between it and the League." He motioned to the tablet and the eight pictures. "They've been causing us quite a bit of trouble. They have a lot to answer for. I'm sure they owe you some answers as well. Like why they left you to take the fall?"

Claire remained silent.

"The League wants them brought in, dead or alive," he continued. "If you do this for us, you get your answers, your revenge...you get your life back. You get to move on with it. Instead of just stagnating and trying to find feeling at the bottom of a bottle."

Claire swallowed hard. He knew. Still, she said nothing.

"Fine. I knew this was a waste of time," the man said. He shrugged his coat over his shoulders and reached for the tablet. But Claire's hand shot out and grabbed it first. She pulled it to her. Slowly. He smirked. "Keep it. And we'll see you tomorrow at headquarters. 7 AM. Don't be late." He turned to the bartender and dropped several folded bills on the counter. "Cut her off. I need her sober for tomorrow." The bartender nodded. Then the man and his bald-headed companion slipped out into the night.

"Mikey, you better get me the rest of the bottle," Claire said, swiping through the information on the screen.

"Never liked suits," the bartender smirked, and slid the full bottle over to Claire.

"Well...looks like I'm gonna have to dust off mine."

"You're greatly underestimating your own incompetence" might be the coolest thing I've ever heard anyone say, ever. I'm totally stealing that someday.

I'm so curious as to what happened for the entire group to let Claire take the fall. This just provided me extra motivation to try and finish up my post, even if I am kinda hangover.

I read that as "underestimating your own impotence." Which, you have to admit, would have been awesome too.

Anyway, really interested as to what happened and pushed Claire to that point as well. Also, if that part's going to actually happen, are we to assume there's gonna be a timeskip at some point (after a major battle or something, I'm guessing)?

I'm going to let nie post first before going ahead with mine. There's a lot for me to write and I'm not really sure how to continue past reacting to everything that's happened, so nie's post should probably help me a tad with that. Well, that, and I'm still not done with school work, believe it or not. One more project left.

Will have a post up this weekend.

These trailers and previews are getting me hyped up. Seriously. I need to know what happens that leads to that last preview.

And, I guess I'll kick off the character questionnaires with Kotomi's profile. Beatrice and Theo to come.

I. Basic Attributes

* Given Name: Kotomi Yamagishi

* Nickname(s): Orphan (Call sign)

* Appearance: Kotomi is thin and a little taller than average height, though her posture and build make her look a bit wiry. She has long and straight hair that is as black as night, usually tied back in a simple but long ponytail. Even when its tied back though, the ponytail still goes nearly all the way down her back. She ties it back with a simple white hair band, really nothing more than a white piece of string. She is of Asian descent, specifically Japanese, and her facial features reflect that. Her face is a little rounded, almost childish, but her facial features are sharp and give her a bit of an intense look. Or rather it would if she were to actually seem as though she was paying attention. She always looks a bit spaced out, and rarely does she ever look serious. You can even find her seemingly staring into space for minutes on end.

For her usual outfit, Kotomi wears a simple black and white striped shirt, a bit thicker than a t-shirt but not quite a sweater, more of something in the middle. The shirt is long sleeved, and the stripes are horizontal and a bit thick, somewhat reminiscent of a stereotypical prison garb. She also wears a simple pair of dark khaki pants that have a softer texture, being made of cotton rather than denim. An oil and grease stained cloth is usually hanging from her left pocket, and a tool of some sort, usually a small wrench, screwdriver, or pair of scissors, can often be seen sticking out of her right pocket.

Her pilot suit is a simple black suit, with white gloves and boots. Various sensors and padding mark over various points of the suit, such as her sides, shoulders, and neck.

* Race/ethnicity: Asian (Japanese)

* Physical abilities/limitations: Extremely calm and unshaken in almost any situation. High intellect, excellent memory, and a near inhuman aptitude for running calculations and statistics. Crippled by a severe lack of empathy and an inability to express and relate to strong emotional cues. Her petite frame gives her little physical strength.

II. Socioeconomic class/standing:

* Religion: A loose belief in Karma and a Creator is all she adheres to. She believes that no religion is entirely correct and that such matters are beyond the ability of humans to understand.

* Place of birth: Unknown, presumed to be Tokyo, Japan.

* Place and time of story: Not too distant future.

* Parents' profiles: Her parents are believed to have died while she was still an infant. No record of her before her arrival at the orphanage exists.

* Brothers/sisters/significant-other relatives:

N/A

* Family structure/life:

Kotomi has no siblings or family, and "friendship" is an all but unknown concept to her. She keeps everyone at arm’s length, never afraid to start or end a relationship as circumstances dictate. She leads an almost Spartan-like lifestyle, holding on to very little personal belongings and almost no sentimental keepsakes.

III. Brief Life Story

Kotomi’s past is a bit of a mystery. She doesn't like to share personal details with people, and as a result tends to keep most of her history to herself. She grew up as an orphan, having lost her parents early on, to this day she doesn't know exactly what happened to them. All she knows is that she doesn’t even remember them, not their voices, not their faces, she has been alone for her whole life. Perhaps it is because of this, or perhaps it is because she found solace in books rather than people, but either way she grew up immersed in textbooks of all kinds, shunning the company of fellow people. You could say that had the orphanage had a larger collection of fiction books, then she would have become lost in other worlds and fantasies, but since the library was nothing more than a collection of discarded and donated textbooks, she quickly became obsessed with learning all sorts of things, from philosophy to psychology to physics to mechanics and so on and so forth.

She had pretty much no hope of adoption. Given the choice of a “normal” kid who liked sports and a kid who sat in dark corners with a college level textbook in her lap and a pair of ever opening and closing scissors in hand, who did you think the potential parents were going to pick? After spending fourteen years as such, its only natural that she have the conversation skills, vocabulary, and mannerisms of a desktop computer.

Although, these lonely days wen't to last forever. As fate would have it, she was stumbled upon by a company representative of Arisawa Heavy Industries. The man thought there was something different about her, and after subjecting the young girl to various tests, it became apparent that she had substantial AMS potential. So, at the age of sixteen, she began to work for AHI. Officially, she was hired as a "consultant". However what they were really planning was preparing her to be an AC pilot. Someone of her natural skills would be a benefit to the company if she were to prove to be loyal to them. However, the ceasefire came too soon for this dream. Now with a trained pilot and an AC that served essentially no use to them, they were forced to relinquish both, as the AC was technically the pilot's, Kotomi's, property. Once Collared came around though, Kotomi finally had something to focus on again. She committed herself to the perfection of her piloting skills, determined not to put what the corporation did for her to vain. She has managed to quickly rise through the ranks, and is proving to be quite the newcomer to the scene. Even now though, she still holds some loyalties to Arisawa Heavy Industries, and gives missions that benefit them priority, a practice that the company is well aware of.

IV. Psychology

* Outer Goal: Outwardly, Kotomi is primarily concerned with her utility. She wants nothing more than to apply her skills in as helpful and skillful a fashion as possible.

* Inner Goal: Inwardly, Kotimi is a bit more complex. Though she would never show it, she is constantly wrestling with selflessly following her duty and perusing her own individuality. She longs to feel useful and needed, but she is also afraid of losing herself to the cause

* Superobjective: Kotomi's greatest desire is to be needed. This fuels her obsessive drive to learn and perform.

* Life, career, or personal goals outside of the realm of the story: Kotomi seeks little more from her life than to apply her utility as effectively as possible. In other words, she simply wants to do what she can, while she can. She has given little if any though to settling down and has no plans for retirement.

* Defining characteristic: Her speech patterns, expressions and mannerisms are so rigid and mechanical in nature that at times she seems more machine than human.

* Hopes/desires: Kotomi is hopeful that she can be of service to her team and her patron company without being a burden or causing any problems. She is also struggling to overcome her current inability to relate and express herself normally with other people, and is hopeful that she can manage it.

* Fears/phobias: In a word, loss. Its why she keeps herself at a distance. Its why she treats her Armored Core like a work of art. She is terrified of losing anything that she holds dear. Its why so precious few things hold a spot in her heart. She doesn't want to be alone again.

* Dirty Secrets: When she's sure she's alone, she talks to her Armored Core, almost as if its a diary of sorts.

* Introvert or extrovert?: Introvert

* More thinking or feeling?: Thinking

* What do you see is the biggest contradiction(s) your character lives out?: She longs to be needed, yet keeps people at arm’s length. She is afraid of loss, yet unwilling to hold onto things.

* Tends to be self-centered? Selfless?: Selfless

* Favorite and hated foods/drinks: She loves anything sweet or salty. She hates sour things. She is not much of a meat eater, preferring seafood or vegetables when given the chance. She is both a coffee and a tea drinker. Breakfast foods are a personal favorite as well, and bacon can be something of a guilty pleasure.

* Education or important learning experiences: She tirelessly self-studied since she taught herself to read at the age of 3 and was at a college level in core subjects at the age of 12. She was further educated by Arisawa Heavy Industries upon her recruitment. She has an abnormally high IQ and a high aptitude for complex puzzles and problems.

* Most hated activities: Pointless tasks and repetition.

* Most enjoyed activities: Piloting and working on her AC and reading.

* Deepest secret or wildest fantasy: When she talks to her AC, she sometimes wishes her AC would talk back.

* Sense (or lack!) of humor: Kotomi's humor is very dry and often just a bit off beat. Dark humor is a personal favorite of hers. Despite this, she rarely laughs out loud.

* Who is your character's hero, or who do they admire or emulate? In Kotomi's own words: "All heroes are fail-able. No human can achieve perfection worthy of adoration and idolization." That said, she does have respect for several artists, scientists, and inventors including Tesla, Van Gogh, Schrödinger, Da Vinci, Galileo, and others who confronted established beliefs at the time.

V. Philosophy & Morality

* Attitudes toward:

Self - You are what you choose to be. Challenge yourself and exceed your limits.

Others - Other people are something of an enigma to Kotomi. Try as she might, she simply can't seem to grasp the way the average person feels and thinks.

Friendship - "An established and collectively understood exchange of time, energy, ideas, and emotions to support mutual gain among two or more individuals. A form of symbiosis."

Sex - "The means by which animals procreate."

Love - Kotomi has a crippled sense of empathy. This in turn causes her difficulty in feeling or accepting love. Unwilling to feel something she can't understand, she suppresses all thoughts of the matter behind what theory and psychology she can grasp. That love is nothing more than a chemical imbalance, almost a mental illness. Something that defies rational thought.

Family - As far as Kotomi is concerned, her "family" is comprised of herself and her Armored Core. Though recent long-term exposure to a certain team of pilots has her willing to expand this sphere.

Marriage - "A mutual agreement between a male and a female to merge all respective aspects of their life and to refrain from intimacy with others outside of the agreement. Primarily motivated by emotional instability, desire to raise offspring, and/or monetary gain."

Country - Though Japanese, Kotomi holds little if any patriotism for her homeland. The global scale of her occupation demands that she avoid such attachments in order to better serve her clients.

The World - "The world is what humans have molded it to be. Nothing more, nothing less. This world is not perfect because humans are not perfect."

Religion - "Mankind's attempts to explain and understand that which by its very nature cannot be explained or understood."

* Political philosophy: Kotomi is very muted when it comes to politics. Her beliefs are very ground in statistics and rational thought, leaving little room for "what ifs". This makes her more closely align to trains of thought such as Ayn Rand, though she is far from vocal about, only offering her input when directly asked. In her mind, it is pointless to argue relative truths to those who believe otherwise. Her views on environmentalism vary. She will be approving of anything that causes a net good, disapproving of anything that doesn't, and quick to offer logical, if off the wall alternatives.

* Superstitions?: Kotomi believes that people possess unique souls. She believes that cherished objects do as well. She remains open minded about anything that science can't quantify or explain.

* Catchphrase that defines their worldview?: "You are what you choose to be." and “When it is not in our power to determine what is true, we ought to follow what is most probable.”

VI. Life & Lifestyle

* Closest friend(s): None.

* Job/career/occupation: Armored Core pilot.

- Attitude towards job: A necessary act of violence to prevent unnecessary bloodshed.

* Noted accomplishments: An extremely qualified pilot for her young age. Very high mission success rate.

- Famous/infamous?: Famous for quick clean missions done with utmost care and precision. Infamous for being notoriously hard to match with an operator that can keep up with her vernacular.

* Clubs/organizations belonged to: Strong ties to Arisawa Heavy Industries. Employed by Collard. Part of a special team of Irregulars.

* Favorite music or group/favorite TV shows or films: Kotomi is a huge fan of classical and jazz music, though she also appreciates any type of music with strong talents across all instruments. She prefers instrumentals to vocal tracks as she prefers to experience her own interpretation of the emotional cues in the music rather than the forced lyrics of a singer. She is also an avid reader of mystery novels.

* Hobbies: Reading, studying, and working on her AC.

VII. Food for Thought

* How would your character react to:

- Inheriting $1 million: The high payoff of her occupation means that she is already quite wealthy by normal standards. $1 million would simply be a nice bonus to upgrade her AC with.

- The death of a loved one: This is something Kotomi couldn't bear. It would drive her close to the breaking point if she were to open up to someone only to have them snatched away.

- A natural disaster: hurricane/earthquake, etc.: "Such occurrences are natural. It is of no benefit to despair, only to offer what assistance you can."

- Being fired: This would also be a problem simply because it could cost her her AC. Unable to part with it, if it came to that she might flee to the underworld in order to remain a pilot.

- Meeting an old friend or enemy not seen for years: Kotomi keeps no close attachments, positive or negative. Meeting an old friend or enemy would simply mean less time would be needed on both accounts to glean relevant tactical information.

- Having or raising children: This is another enigma for Kotomi. Having avoided all manner of intimacy, its simply something that she has never given much consideration towards. If it were to happen, she would have no choice but to adapt to the circumstances and take responsibility for the child. Unable to part with her AC, this would cause a serious conflict of interest that would result in her neglecting one or the other. Either way she would feel guilty, and the result would be a massive strain on her psyche leading her to completely cut off either her child or her AC from her life.

- Being raped/mugged/violated in some way: Kotomi would sooner die than allow herself to be at the mercy of someone with ill intentions. She always carries something she can use as a weapon. But should the worst come to pass, her thoughts would be consumed by the need to bring that person to justice in some way. As a deeply private person, such a violation would strike some deep chords in her psyche, perhaps causing her to become even more distant from those around her.

- An unexpected kindness or compliment: A brief moment of pause, perhaps confusion would give way to a curt thank you and a return to business as usual. Depending on the nature of the kindness, Kotomi may become curious as to the doer's reasons or motives for the act leading to some investigation.

- A serious illness such as AIDS or cancer: Acceptance. Kotomi may be deeply introspective, but she holds no strong attachments to this world. She fears the death of those around her more than her own death. Though she would prefer to live a long life, so as to maximize her usefulness, becoming stricken with a serious illness would force her to re-prioritize the aspects of her life in an effort to make the biggest impact she can while she is still alive.

- A flat tire on the expressway: If it happens to someone else, she will offer what assistance she can. If she has a tire, she will offer it as a replacement. If not, she will simply call it in, perhaps not even stopping her own vehicle to do so. Should she be the one with the flat tire... well, then she'll have to take matters into her own hands. She isn't afraid to hitchhike if need be.

- An interracial relationship: Kotomi fails to understand why this would even be an issue. Interracial breeding promotes increased gene variety.

- Five minutes on local or national TV: Kotomi is entirely unimpressed with fame. Given the opportunity to speak on television, she would simply spend it doing something she felt would be of benefit to whoever was listening. Even if she has to give a lecture or bring a current issue into focus.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More In-depth, thought provoking questions to think about:

For further analysis of your characters, you should ask yourself, or rather, your character, thought-provoking questions that explore personal philosophy, morality, politics, knee-jerk reactions, secret fantasies, wishes, and much more. Questions to think about would be:

A. If your character were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would they most regret not having told someone? Why haven't they told them yet?

She would regret not properly expressing her thanks to the man who rescued her from the orphanage and brought her to AHI.

B. Would your character accept $1,000,000 to leave the county and never set foot in it again?

Kotomi values her freedom to come and go more than the size of her bank account.

C. Your character is given the power to kill people simply by thinking of their deaths and twice repeating the word "good-bye." People would die a natural death and no one would suspect them. Are there any situations in which they would use this power? [If they can imagine themselves killing someone indirectly, could they still see doing it if they had to look into the person's eyes and stab the person to death? Have they ever genuinely wanted to kill someone or wished them dead?]

It would certainly make eliminating high priority targets a lot easier. Otherwise, Kotomi probably wouldn't use the ability at all. It would be nothing more than a combat tool to her.

D. What would constitute a "perfect" evening for your character?

A quiet hangar, a surplus of spare parts, a playlist of jazz and classical music, and her AC.

E. Would your character rather be extremely successful professionally and have a tolerable yet unexciting private life, or have an extremely happy private life and only a tolerable and uninspiring professional life?

Kotomi's life is her work. Her private life is of little importance to her, so naturally she would want her professional life to be successful.

F. If your character could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability or quality, what would it be?

Logically, she would want something to assist with her job. Some sort of ability to help her achieve her job. Precognition or the ability to pause time are at the top of her list. However, deep down, she also longs to become more like a normal person, able to feel and express herself normally.

G. Your character has the chance to meet someone with whom they can have the most satisfying love imaginable - the stuff of dreams. Sadly, they know that in six months the person will die. Knowing that pain that would follow, would they still want to meet that person and fall in love? What if they knew their lover would not die, but instead would betray them? [In love, is intensity or permanence more important to them? How much do they expect from someone who loves them? What would make them feel betrayed by their mate - indifference? Dishonesty? Infidelity?

Loss is Kotomi's biggest fear. Knowing that the loved one would leave her soon, never to return, would taint the entire relationship. She would be unable to enjoy the good times, as she would be fixated on the loss to come. She would rather never know the person at all.

H. Does your character prefer being around men or women? Do their closest friends tend to be men or women?

Gender has no impact on how Kotomi treats or interacts with people.

I. Would your character be willing to murder an innocent person if it would end hunger in the world?

In short, yes. Logically speaking, 1 death, innocent as they may be, to save millions from starvation is a choice that simply cannot be turned down.

J. What is their most treasured memory?

The day her AC was presented to her.

K. If your character knew there would be a nuclear war in one week, what would they do?

Everything she could do to lessen the damage. Depending on the circumstances, she would either try to stop the war or try to save as many "high priority" people as she could. As this is a doomsday scenario, she would not hesitate to put herself in mortal danger or to lay down her own life if it would improve the situation.

L. What is the greatest accomplishment of your character's life? Is there anything they hope to do that is even better?

Her mission success rate is in the 90 percentile, which means there's always room for improvement.

M. One would be the one material item your character would save during a fire?

Either her collection of reference books from the orphanage, or her reproduction of Van Gogh's The Starry Night.

N. Your character is offered $1,000,000 for the following act: before them are ten pistols - only one of which is loaded. They must pick up one of the pistols, point it at their forehead, and pull the trigger. If they can walk away they do so a millionaire. Would they accept the risk?

It depends on how much she needed the money. Nine out of ten isn't terrible odds, that's still a 90% chance that you will walk away. In her current situation though, money is no issue, so she would refuse the offer.

O. If your character could choose the manner of their death, what would it be?

Kotomi would prefer to die in battle, to go down with her core.

P. For what in your character's life do they feel most grateful?

Her second chance at life after the orphanage. Even if it is as a glorified mercenary.

Q. How forgiving is your character?

Probably more so than most. Kotomi is a believer in circumstance, if there is a reasonable excuse for why someone did something, she will usually not hold it against them. If she profiles a person as a repeat offender however, then they might get a harder time of earning her forgiveness.

R. When your character tells a story, do they often exaggerate or embellish it? If so, why?

Not at all. If anything, her manner of speaking could make even the most exciting story dull.

S. How much does your character feel in control of the course of their life?

Generally speaking, not very. Her course in life is already set. She has no other options ahead of her than to continue on as an AC pilot. However, this isn't a negative thing to her. She is more than content with her role, and so long as she can still choose which missions to accept and which to refuse, she has no qualms.

T. Is it easy for your character to ask for help when they need it? Will they ask for help?

Kotomi might never admit it, but she has her pride. She will ask for help if she sees no other alternative, otherwise, she will want to exhaust all other options first. She likes to be able to accomplish things herself.

U. Would your character like to be famous? In what way?

Kotomi cares little for fame. If she had to be famous, she would prefer to be remembered after her death, for the actions she performed in her life.

V. What are your character's most compulsive habits? Do they regularly struggle to break those habits?

Kotomi has a habit of over-analyzing things. This can occasionally cause irritation among her colleagues, so she tries to keep it in check. Otherwise, she does have a compulsion to clean or maintain mechanical devices, even to the point of ruining a shirt just to wipe a grease stain off an AC's foot. She sees this as a service rendered however, and doesn't think it a problem.

W. What does your character strive for most in their life: accomplishment, security, love, power, excitement, knowledge, or something else?

Accomplishment, in a way. To be more specific, she wants to be useful. She wants to do her job and do it well. Anything she can do to improve her performance is fair game. Exercise, study, research, simulations, its all on the table. Being useful and being needed are what keeps her going. She couldn't bear it if she were cast aside.

X. How easily embarrassed is your character?

Kotomi does NOT fluster easily. At all. Some things normal people would find mortifying, cause only a mild reaction, if any, from Kotomi. She does have common courtesy, and an understanding of proper social etiquette, but beyond that seeing her cheeks red is a rare event.

Y. Does the fact that your character has never done something before increase or decrease its appeal to them?

Increase. New experiences promote new learning, new ideas, and new growth. Kotomi is not much of a risk taker unless the odds are in her favor, but she is willing to try just about anything new.

Z. What’s the most dangerous thing your character has ever done?

As an AC pilot, every mission involves putting herself in harm’s way. Facing death is a commonplace occurrence for her. That said, one of her most dangerous missions involved going outside her core to perform something of an espionage mission. Removing the giant war machine from the equation certainly ramped up the danger level.

I. Basic Attributes

* Given Name: Beatrice Victorique

* Nickname(s): Vega (Call sign)

* Appearance: Beatrice is a fairly young woman of European descent. Her entire appearance reflects who she is at heart, a noblewoman. Her facial features are elegant and have that regal beauty that may be both attractive and intimidating. Her hair is an icy blue and is tied back in a long but thin ponytail. Two other long but thin streaks of hair trail along either side of her face, going down below her chin on either side. Her eyes are a piercing blue color, bright but cold. Her skin is light, with not much of a tan, and her figure is thin and lithe.

She comes from a wealthy family, and her clothing always shows that. Everything she wears, no matter how casual the style, is of a very high quality. Everything from formal ballroom dresses to the casual blouse and skirt pair are in her collection of outfits, and all are refined and elegant as her physical appearance. Her most common look is that of a red skirt and a white and black blouse, both of the highest quality. Long black leggings go nearly all the way up to her skirt, and white silken gloves generally hide her hands. Her hair is usually tied back with a small white or golden ribbon, tied in a very fancy, but small bow.

Her pilot suit is a white and blue suit of a noticeably richer style than many other pilots. Elegant detail lines and thin, but effective padding combine with the minimalist amount of sensors on the suit to create something that looks more like a formal wetsuit than a combat uniform.

* Race/ethnicity: European (English)

* Physical abilities/limitations: Excellent “poker face”. Physical abilities are only slightly above average. No handicaps.

II. Socioeconomic class/standing:

* Religion: Parents are both Catholic, though she herself only holds a loose belief in God.

* Place of birth: Brisbane, Australia

* Place and time of story: Not too distant future.

* Parents' profiles:
Edward Victorique (Father)
- race/ethnicity: European (English)
- socioeconomic level: Upper Class
- religion: Catholic
- habits: Smokes cigars. Wine connoisseur. Extremely focused on his real estate business. Makes precious little time for anything non-profitable.
- quality of relationship with child(ren): Strained
- living/deceased: Living

Bellona Victorique (Mother)
- race/ethnicity: European (English)
- socioeconomic level: Upper Class
- religion: Catholic
- habits: Maintains a vast collection of fine wines, exotic teas, and antique weaponry. Doted on Beatrice when she was little, but fails to understand her obsession with her AC.
- quality of relationship with child(ren): Strained
- living/deceased: Living

* Brothers/sisters/significant-other relatives:

N/A
* Family structure/life:

Beatrice has a small family, a fact that only makes the distance between the family she does have more meaningful. She has no siblings, and only a few cousins or other relatives whom she barely knows. Her parents, the help at the family manor, and Theodore comprise the whole of what she would consider her “close family”. Her relationship with her parents was never particularly close. Her father was always at something of a distance emotionally and while her mother doted over her as a child, as she aged she simply drifted further away from the “perfect daughter” her mother had longed for. Her decision to become an AC pilot for Collard was the last straw. As it stands, she rarely talks to her parents. She even suspects them of giving her the AC simply to push her out of the family picture.

III. Brief Life Story

Beatrice is from a wealthy English family, though she was born and raised in Australia. Her family left Europe to get away from the social problems that they feared were only going to get worse. For a wealthy family living in the neutral Austrailia, her childhood was pretty good by most standards. She was pampered, given essentially anything she wanted. However, this had the effect it most commonly does, leaving her wanting nothing more than one of the things she couldn’t have. That is to say, she wanted an AC.

Her parents, as business minded as they were, handled the situation fairly well, by promising her one in the future. In the meantime, they found her a friend to take her mind of off the AC thing, hopefully for good. This friend was Theodore, the son of one of the family maids and the only other child in the estate. The two might have become fast friends if it weren’t for two things. The first is that Theodore was already brainwashed into “butler mode”. The second was that Beatrice was more than content to leave it that way.

With her trusty butler Theodore backing her up, Beatrice drew up her own plans (though Theo really did most of the work), and when the promised time came, presented her AC design to her parents, who had thought she had long since given up on the AC. Of course, a promise was a promise, and Beatrice wasn’t about to let her parents back out of it. So, her eighteenth birthday resulted in her becoming an AC pilot, much to her parents dismay at both the idea of it and the sizable gap it left in their wallets.

Though she is new and relatively untested in actual combat situations, Beatrice has taken quite a liking to the AC arenas provided by Collared. With Theo providing her top notch support and strategies, she has had some success. Though she has more losses than victories at the moment, she has shown surprising AMS potential and is gaining some popularity in the lower ranking circles of the arena.

IV. Psychology

* Outer Goal: To become an independent and capable AC pilot.

* Inner Goal: To prove to her parents, and possibly to herself as well, that she can succeed by her own merits alone.

* Superobjective: To get to the point where she can stop trying. To work hard enough, to become perfect enough that she can acknowledge that she can do no better.

* Life, career, or personal goals outside of the realm of the story: Beatrice has no plans to settle down anytime soon. To be honest, she doesn’t even know what she will do when she can no longer pilot an AC. Her future is made by the moment, and she is content to leave it that way for now.

* Defining characteristic: Her dignified manner, sharp tongue, and icy persona.

* Hopes/desires: To survive as an AC pilot and to eventually claim the number one arena rank as her own. She also wants to repair her relationship with her mother, but so long as she pilots an AC she is doubtful that it’s possible.

* Fears/phobias: Stagnation. Beyond everything else, she doesn’t want to wind up like her parents, sitting at a desk for hours on end, moussing away this bit of coin or that dusty antique. She wants to live, to do something, to get out in the world and make a difference. Failing to accomplish anything would be a fate worse than death to her. And though she would never admit it, she is always worried that one day she might push Theo away from her side.

* Dirty Secrets: Beatrice’s icy persona is just that, a persona. In reality, she has a sweet side, and loves to be generous to others. She even has a soft spot for cute animals, which she keeps well hidden. Its because she doesn’t want to be seen as weak that she works so hard at her mask.

* Introvert or extrovert?: Extrovert

* More thinking or feeling?: Feeling

* What do you see is the biggest contradiction(s) your character lives out?: She is scared of losing Theo’s company, yet unafraid to order him around, at times like a servant.

* Tends to be self-centered? Selfless?: Self-centered.

* Favorite and hated foods/drinks: She despises spicy food. She likes her drinks strong and her deserts cold and sweet. Ice cream is a personal favorite of hers. She has a tendency to avoid any cheap foodstuffs, sometimes to the point of refusing to eat if nothing better is available and is an avid tea drinker.

* Education or important learning experiences: Growing up in a wealthy estate, she received only the best personal tutors during her childhood. Though her retention is debatable, she was instructed in all manner of subjects, from mathematics to fine arts. In a way, her time as an AC pilot has been a particularly eye-opening experience. It gave her a glimpse at the world outside her estate.

* Most hated activities: Waiting and cleaning.

* Most enjoyed activities: Winning an Arena match or taking a hot shower after a long day.

* Deepest secret or wildest fantasy: Beatrice had a crush on Theo when they were kids. Anyone discovering this secret puts their own life at risk.

* Sense (or lack!) of humor: Beatrice is a master of sarcasm and clever remarks. But unlike most, she can appreciate it both coming and going, and anyone who can match her word play earns her instant approval. Besting her wordplay however is a good way to start a grudge. She loathes puns.

* Who is your character's hero, or who do they admire or emulate? Whoever is currently the #1 ranked Irregular.

V. Philosophy & Morality

* Attitudes toward:

Self – Let no one compromise who you are. Stand up for yourself.

Others - Other people are usually just there to get in your way.

Friendship - Friendship isn’t permanent. Friends come and go, so its best not to get too attached.

Sex - A pleasant diversion at times, but generally more trouble than its worth. Too much emotion involved for a short-term relationship.

Love - Love seems to be something of an impossible standard. No matter how romantic someone may be, there are no “White Knights” out there. True love doesn’t exist.

Family - A royal bother. A family is nothing more than the disappointing artificial ties forged by nothing more than bloodlines. In the end, they will let you down, just like everyone else.

Marriage - A business transaction, a way to merge the wealth of two families for the mutual benefit of both. Any notion of who one loves or doesn’t love is of no relevance.

Country - Country means little to Beatrice. The place of one’s birth is of no importance in deciding what one stands for.

The World - A truly broken place, filled with broken people living out sad broken lives.

Religion - It would take a God to keep the world in one piece for so long with so many crazy people running about.

* Political philosophy: Politicians are the most delusional, self-centered, misguided fools to ever wield power. The average farmhand or servant boy would know more about leading a country than those blowhards.

* Superstitions?: Superstitions are for the childish and delusional.

* Catchphrase that defines their worldview?: “Everyone wants something, you just have to find out what.” And “Some people are simply born better.”

VI. Life & Lifestyle

* Closest friend(s): Theo.

* Job/career/occupation: Armored Core pilot.

- Attitude towards job: An excuse to pilot a multi-ton war machine. The details only matter if people are getting killed.

* Noted accomplishments: Worked her way up through the arena rankings fairly quickly for such a young pilot. High performance ratings due to her permanent partnership with her operator.

- Famous/infamous?: Infamous among certain arena circles for her tenacity and sharp tongue.

* Clubs/organizations belonged to: Employed by Collard. Part of a special team of Irregulars.

* Favorite music or group/favorite TV shows or films: Beatrice finds books to be a bore, but does enjoy a good game (video, board, cards, whatever) and has a soft spot for classical music thanks to her mother.

* Hobbies: Running combat sims for her AC, challenging Theo to card games, and keeping up with the Irregular listings.

VII. Food for Thought

* How would your character react to:

- Inheriting $1 million: Who in her wealthy family would have the gall to leave her only a palsy $1 Million?

- The death of a loved one: There are precious few people in her life that Beatrice would be unwilling to part with. The loss of such a person (Theo for example) would hit her pretty hard.

- A natural disaster: hurricane/earthquake, etc.: “Glad I’m not one of those poor saps.” *donates a sum to the appropriate charity*

- Being fired: Anyone who would see fit to fire her might find their personal property in the firing line of her AC, consequences be dammed. Assuming her more rational advisor talks her out of such measures, they can expect the full force of her family’s legal connections to come crushing down on them.

- Meeting an old friend or enemy not seen for years: Prepare for an appropriate quip or sarcastic remark. And for their motives to be thoroughly questioned and examined, friend or foe alike.

- Having or raising children: Its not that Beatrice hasn’t put any thought into the idea, its just that she considers herself too young to go down that road.

- Being raped/mugged/violated in some way: The perpetrator WILL pay. DEARLY.

- An unexpected kindness or compliment: Beatrice relishes these unexpected moments. Especially so since she is usually the one causing them.

- A serious illness such as AIDS or cancer: Denail. No way could her life be cut so short. She’d fight it with everything she had until the moment when it becomes clear that she will lose. At that point, its simply quiet resignation.

- A flat tire on the expressway: Get someone working on the spare or call a tow truck or whatever and hail a cab, obviously.

- An interracial relationship: Wasn’t this debate settled like, a few decades ago?

- Five minutes on local or national TV: Five minutes? That’s it? What, no story piece?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More In-depth, thought provoking questions to think about:

For further analysis of your characters, you should ask yourself, or rather, your character, thought-provoking questions that explore personal philosophy, morality, politics, knee-jerk reactions, secret fantasies, wishes, and much more. Questions to think about would be:

A. If your character were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would they most regret not having told someone? Why haven't they told them yet?

Not telling Theo how much he means to her. And seriously, do you think she’d ever be that soft?

B. Would your character accept $1,000,000 to leave the county and never set foot in it again?

$1,000,000 to never have to see New York again? Tempting, but they’d have to up their ante.

Oh the fun she would have with this. Until the guilt set in of course, she’s not a complete monster. There’s a few choice people she’d have in mind, but she couldn’t bring herself to use it too much.

D. What would constitute a "perfect" evening for your character?

A nice private lounge, an assortment of finer cuisine, alive piano music, and someone to wait on her hand and foot.

E. Would your character rather be extremely successful professionally and have a tolerable yet unexciting private life, or have an extremely happy private life and only a tolerable and uninspiring professional life?

With the amount of stress her occupation causes her, she’d probably opt for the successful professional life. Her private life would be easier to deal with when she can relieve stress with a giant war machine.

F. If your character could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability or quality, what would it be?

She’d consider “best AC pilot in the world”, but that would give her little to strive for. She is lacking in patience, so perhaps that would be a good quality to bestow upon herself.

Dishonesty? Infidelity?

Beatrice is already jaded to the unlikelihood of true love. No matter how good the romance she’d always expect the backstab, its only human nature. Why not enjoy the good times while they’re there?

H. Does your character prefer being around men or women? Do their closest friends tend to be men or women?

Men tend to be chauvinistic blowhards. Women tend to be prissy gossips. She’s equally unimpressed with both.

I. Would your character be willing to murder an innocent person if it would end hunger in the world?

Theoretically, yes. It makes sense after all. But should she actually be the one who would have to pull the trigger, she probably wouldn’t be able to do it.

J. What is their most treasured memory?

When Theo agreed to remain by her side as her partner.

K. If your character knew there would be a nuclear war in one week, what would they do?

Two words: bunker down.

L. What is the greatest accomplishment of your character's life? Is there anything they hope to do that is even better?

Becoming an AC pilot. Beatrice won’t rest until she is recognized as an ace pilot preferably by taking the number one rank.

M. What would be the one material item your character would save during a fire?

The charm bracelet Theo gave her when they were kids. (Even he doesn’t know she still holds onto the old thing).

N. Your character is offered $1,000,000 for the following act: before them are ten pistols - only one of which is loaded. They must pick up one of the pistols, point it at their forehead, and pull the trigger. If they can walk away they do so a millionaire. Would they accept the risk?

Her life against $1 million? Please, she’s worth much more than that.

O. If your character could choose the manner of their death, what would it be?

To die at a ripe old age, but not so old where she’d be decrepit. Preferably in her sleep.

P. For what in your character's life do they feel most grateful?

Theo’s continued support, even with the way she treats him sometimes.

Q. How forgiving is your character?

Not very, especially if it’s a personal offense. She’s not really one to hold a grudge forever, but she will try to get even.

R. When your character tells a story, do they often exaggerate or embellish it? If so, why?

Only a little. You know, just the parts about herself. Others might get the opposite treatment, depending on how much she approves of them.

S. How much does your character feel in control of the course of their life?

Beatrice feels like she’s in complete control of her life. She knows this isn’t entirely true, she is heavily dependent on Theo, but she likes to feel like she has the freedom to do as she pleases.

T. Is it easy for your character to ask for help when they need it? Will they ask for help?

No. Not at all. Insinuating as such is a good way to get her to try in vain to do something herself, even if she knows she can’t do it without help. Theo is the sole exception, though she never “asks” for his help, she simply expects it.

U. Would your character like to be famous? In what way?

Of course, by being the top Irregular.

V. What are your character's most compulsive habits? Do they regularly struggle to break those habits?

Sarcasm has become a way of life for her, as has ordering Theo around. She isn’t exactly pleased with herself on either account, but she’s too set in her ways to change.

W. What does your character strive for most in their life: accomplishment, security, love, power, excitement, knowledge, or something else?

Excitement, to a degree. She can’t stand being bored or forced to do some dull activity, but at the same time she has her limits. She likes to stay active, but she’s not about to go jumping out of airplanes or anything.

X. How easily embarrassed is your character?

She will never admit it, but she flusters easily sometimes. She’s only glad that she’s very good at hiding it.

Y. Does the fact that your character has never done something before increase or decrease its appeal to them?

Decrease. She likes to always be prepared and sure of herself, and the best way to do that is to stay in familiar territory.

Z. What’s the most dangerous thing your character has ever done?

Test firing her AC’s weapons (without any prior practice) on her parent’s estate. Her first confirmed kill was the gardener’s tool shed.

III. Brief Life Story - See "History" in Signup

IV. Psychology - See "Personality" in Signup

* Outer Goal (physical): Complete the mission. Make money. Don't get caught or killed.

* Inner Goal (psychological/emotional): Satisfy the Passenger. Ease the Need. Do it without getting caught or killed.

* Superobjective: his Need is his driving factor, and he spends his waking moments finding ways to satisfy the Need. Through murder, through combat, through embracing his Mask.

* Life, career, or personal goals outside of the realm of the story: Soldier and Mossad assassin (former). He doesn't believe in long-term goals/commitments because of the dangerous nature of his life. Even believing as he does in his own formidable abilities, he has no illusions that he'll live to old age.

* Defining characteristic: Hyper-lethality, self-awareness, and his ability to jump from hot to cold at a moment's notice.

* Hopes/desires: He wants, secretly (and he'll never admit it, of course), to be a "real" person. To not consider himself a "monster" anymore. Until such time that it's possible, however, he'll make the absolute best of his monstrosity.

* Fears/phobias: Fear of being exposed

* Dirty Secrets: The Passenger.

* Introvert or extrovert: Plays the extrovert, is the introvert

* More thinking or feeling: Thinking. Emotions are "messy, uncomfortable sort of things that only get in the way."

* What do you see is the biggest contradiction(s) your character lives out?: He thrives on the Need to kill, to satisfy his Dark Passenger. But refuses to take certain lives.

* Tends to be self centered? Selfless?: Extremely self-centered.

* Favorite and hated foods/drinks: Coffee is paramount to his existence. Alcohol is a wonderful way for other people to let down their guard. Humus and falafel are food staples. Arsenic trioxide is a fantastic additive.

* Education or important learning experiences: Seeing his family killed. His time training at "the Program" and the Mossad.

* Most hated activities: Paperwork, and listening to people prattle on about their pedantic personal lives.

* Most enjoyed activities: Him and a playmate, alone in a dark room, nothing between them but a knife and a few muffled screams.

* Deepest secret or wildest fantasy: Deep down he fantasizes about being who he really is. He doesn't want to hide his darkness. He wants to stand exposed for the entire world to see. He doesn't know what happens "after" that. But the thought is like electricity.

* Sense (or lack!) of humor: Plays with humor. Plays the snarker, the sarcastic quipper, and the clever rejoinder. Finds "real" people fascinating. Is at the same time jealous and put-off by them and their genuine emotions. Finds people both amusing and infuriating, often at the same time.

* Who is your character's hero, or who do they admire or emulate?: He is, of course, his own greatest admirer, and emulates everyone around him. He picks and chooses their most effective and interesting emotional responses and does his best to duplicate them. He is, in that respect, an amalgamation of everyone he's ever met.

V. Philosophy & Morality

* Attitudes toward:
Self - No one is more important than himself.

Others - They are strictly less important. Pleasant distractions, or a way to build the Mask, at best. Lethal at worst.

Friendship - Most people enjoy friends. It is therefore highly beneficial to appear as if you have and value friendship if you want to avoid suspicion of being a murdering sociopath.

Sex - Sex can be fun, if often messy. It's a useful way to relieve tension, blend in, and divert attention. People usually get too emotionally involved and invested in sex. It's best to be wary of those people.

Love - Lance lacks any sort of empathy (or so he says/believes). Love is just a series of chemical reactions his brain is incapable of replicating. These reactions are even more restrictive and crippling than extreme drug use and alcohol consumption.

Family - Lance doesn't really have any, not anymore (unless you count the Passenger). Family dies. Usually right on top of you, dripping blood on you.

Marriage - Something people do when they're feeling particularly self-abusing. Despite continued mutually-desired marriages, all they seem to result in is complaining.

Country - If he feels anything for "country" he doesn't let it show. Seeing how difficult it is for him to form attachments to physical people he can interact with, it's hard to imagine him forming an attachment to a plot of land, or something as abstract as "country."

The world - A world where someone like him exists and thrives is an awful, terrible place. And it could be so much worse. And that would be so...wonderful.

Religion - His only devotion is to the night and the knife. To the Need and the Hunger.

* Political philosophy: Lance doesn't give much thought to politics as he's yet to meet a politician with a real set of goals or principles that he finds moving. In fact, he sees much more of himself in most politicians and corporate leaders, leading him to believe that they're all hiding a similar darkness. There's no reason for him to believe that anything they claim is any more genuine than his own Mask. He'd just as gladly kill them as he'd kill for them. He has other things to worry about.

* Superstitions: What is the Dark Passenger, really? Is it a real force, a living, thing. A demon, a monster. Or is he just that crazy?

* Catchphrase that defines their worldview: "We're all killers. I'm just better at it." and "We've all got a monster in us. Mine's just bigger."

VI. Life & Lifestyle

* Closest friend(s): Serra Bradley. Claire Leblanc (eventually)

* Job/career/occupation: Armored Core Irregular

- Attitude towards job: A means to an end (what end? He doesn't know). A way to indulge the Passenger within the acceptable moral confines of society and not get caught.

* Noted accomplishments: multitude of black ops missions.

- Famous/infamous?: both and neither. He is known among his peers and in higher intelligence circles as an efficient, if not dangerous operative. Most of his accomplishments are not credited to him.

* Clubs/organizations belonged to: Collared.

* Favorite music or group/favorite TV shows or films: Classical cello music, especially the Elgar cello concerto. Though he also greatly enjoys Paganini's 24 Caprices for the violin.

* Hobbies: drinking, killing. Coffee.

VII. Food for Thought

* How would your character react to:

- Inheriting $1 million: Being quite well-off, he wouldn't blink at the money. He'd be more intrigued by the fact that there was a person out there who saw fit to leave him something at all. And he'd wonder just who this person was.

- The death of a loved one: People die. There's no avoiding that truth. Still, if the loved one was murdered or died of suspicious causes, he'd look into it, find the persons responsible, and pay them back for not respecting a professional courtesy.

- A natural disaster: hurricane/earthquake, etc.: He'd comment that sometimes the world sees fit to put humankind in its place and remind them how small they are. Not the Passenger, though. Nothing is bigger that it.

- Being fired: find a new benefactor. He still has skills certain people would pay well for.

- Meeting an old friend or enemy not seen for years: What do they want? How quickly can he kill them?

- Having or raising children: Awful, sticky, whiny little things.

- Being raped/mugged/violated in some way: Upset (which in itself is one of his stronger emotional responses). He'd seek a way to regain the lost control.

- An unexpected kindness or compliment: Confused. Then he'd try to figure out why, and what was in it for the giver of said kindness/compliment.

- A serious illness such as AIDS or cancer: Everyone dies. Some just sooner than others. It's rather impressive that he lasted this long anyway.

- A flat tire on the expressway: Annoyance. Then he'd likely charm someone into helping him.

- An interracial relationship: He wouldn't bat an eye. If only because he finds most relationships tedious.

- Five minutes on local or national TV: He'd rather not have his face exposed for everyone to see. It's better to remain unknown.

More In-depth, thought provoking questions to think about:

A. If your character were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would they most regret not having told someone? Why haven't they told them yet?

Lance usually speaks his mind (at least to the people he desires speaking to at all), so he doesn't exactly have much left to say to anyone.

B. Would your character accept $1,000,000 to leave the county and never set foot in it again?

Sure. A million dollars is a million dollars. Good luck trying to stop him if he changes his mind, however.

Lance has had day dreams like this. Wonderful, beautiful, exquisite dreams. He's not so keen on the "natural death" part, but that kind of power, that kind of control...And he'd be completely unsuspected? Is there a place for him to sign up for this?

D. What would constitute a "perfect" evening for your character?

A successful mission, a quiet ride back with Serra, something quick to eat, and a devil-dance with a deserving playmate.

E. Would your character rather be extremely successful professionally and have a tolerable yet unexciting private life, or have an extremely happy private life and only a tolerable and uninspiring professional life?

Drawing a line between killing professionally and killing privately is rather...obtuse. Though if he had to pick, Lance would rather have the exciting private kills than the eventful professional ones. The private ones are so much more satisfying. Luckily, he's at a place where he can have both.

F. If your character could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability or quality, what would it be?

That earlier question got him thinking. Lance would love the idea of simply "willing" someone dead. Though the "natural causes" stipulation is rather boring. He'd take that out, make their method of death more to his choosing.

Dishonesty? Infidelity?

Someone that both knows, accepts, and reciprocates his darkness would be rare indeed. At the same time, knowing what he knows about himself (and about them), would make Lance increasingly dubious as to their true (faked) "emotions". He finds love in general a rather tenuous event, but certainly understands the novelty of it. He'd probably try it out, regardless of the outcome--if only to see how things unfold.

H. Does your character prefer being around men or women? Do their closest friends tend to be men or women?

His closest "friends" are indeed women. Though he doesn't really have a preference. He's very adept at manipulating anyone, so their gender has very little meaning to him.

I. Would your character be willing to murder an innocent person if it would end hunger in the world?

He'd be willing to murder an innocent person if it would end hunger in him. Good food is expensive.

J. What is their most treasured memory?

His first kill. What a wonderful, beautifully red affair.

K. If your character knew there would be a nuclear war in one week, what would they do?

Start stockpiling and picking sides. But at all costs, survive.

L. What is the greatest accomplishment of your character's life? Is there anything they hope to do that is even better?

He's one of only seven otherwise-unnamed individuals designated as "Hyper lethal." In a perfect world, there would be just one.

M. What would be the one material item your character would save during a fire?

His collection of...trophies.

N. Your character is offered $1,000,000 for the following act: before them are ten pistols - only one of which is loaded. They must pick up one of the pistols, point it at their forehead, and pull the trigger. If they can walk away they do so a millionaire. Would they accept the risk?

Sure. Odds are in his favor, and he knows the feel and weight of a loaded gun. If he picks up the loaded one and isn't allowed to pick another, he just shoots whoever is in his way and takes the money.

O. If your character could choose the manner of their death, what would it be?

Whichever way would cause his executioner to let down his guard the most.

P. For what in your character's life do they feel most grateful?

The Dark Passenger. Without it, he'd be at a great disadvantage.

Q. How forgiving is your character?

Very...and not at all. It really depends on what you've done to piss him off.

R. When your character tells a story, do they often exaggerate or embellish it? If so, why?

Always exaggerate, always embellish. If you tell them the truth, you're relinquishing an advantage.

S. How much does your character feel in control of the course of their life?

It's his greatest desire to always feel in control. That's what he strives for.

T. Is it easy for your character to ask for help when they need it? Will they ask for help?

No. Not at all. Doing so would relinquish his advantage and control.

U. Would your character like to be famous? In what way?

No. Fame leads to exposure. Exposure leads to scrutiny. Scrutiny leads to the Passenger.

V. What are your character's most compulsive habits? Do they regularly struggle to break those habits?

He's a sociopath with a Dark Passenger and an ever-growing Need to kill. It can make things rather awkward at dinner. He's never bothered to try and break those habits. Why would he, when he derives such enjoyment from them?

W. What does your character strive for most in their life: accomplishment, security, love, power, excitement, knowledge, or something else?

Excitement.

X. How easily embarrassed is your character?

Not very. Embarrassment is an emotion, and he's always in control of those.

Y. Does the fact that your character has never done something before increase or decrease its appeal to them?

Increase. Greatly. Especially if that never-done thing we're talking about is with a potential playmate. Lance loves to experiment.

Z. What’s the most dangerous thing your character has ever done?

I don't think we have enough time for this question. Please refer to the all the above-answered items.

I. Basic Attributes

* Given Name: Serra Bradley

* Nickname(s): Angel

* Appearance: Serra is a woman with soft features. This blonde-haired beauty has often been described as emotionless, but to those who can read her expressions she's anything but. Her blue eyes are actually quite expressive if you know what to look for. Her long blonde hair frames her face and reaches well below her shoulders. Despite her long hair, she rarely ties it back, allowing it to hang freely like a blonde curtain. Serra is of average height and build. She's in rather good shape, though certainly not as toned or athletic as the Armored Core pilots. Her build is softer and more feminine than someone like Claire. Serra is less "lethally" beautiful and more "elegantly" beautiful (though beauty often depends entirely on personal preference). Still, Serra is anything but a wilting flower, as many people could tell you. Despite her softness, she packs a good deal of power into her frame, and has a mean right-hook. Serra's body is far from unmarred. She has a pair of massive scars that run vertically over each of her shoulder blades.

Serra's typical dress is a pair of tight, leg-and-hip-hugging jeans and a sleeveless white top that leaves a lot of her midriff exposed. She also is fond of a thin, light, black leather jacket that she received from Lance at one point. She has a small silver cross pendant, though not necessarily because of any religious belief; it's simply the only thing she owns from before she lost her memories.

* Race/ethnicity: White

* Physical abilities/limitations: Inherently gifted with one of the highest AMS scores on record. Though intense psychological and psychic trauma have rendered her incapable of piloting Armored Cores, this now translates to a high aptitude piloting/driving any sort of vehicle. She also has no memories beyond the past nine years.

II. Socioeconomic class/standing:

* Religion: Christian...probably. She has a cross pendant. But she doesn't remember from where.

* Place of birth: Unknown. Earth, she assumes (actually Florida)

* Place and time of story: Earth, 2099

* Parents' profiles: Unknown (deceased)

* Brothers/sisters/significant-other relatives: N/A

* Family structure/life: As much an orphan as she is an amnesiac. Her closest "family" is Lance. A point he has frequently apologized for.

III. Brief Life Story

Serra can remember very little of he life before nine years ago. For the purpose of the History section, however, her past will be revealed. She was born in North America in Florida in a decrepitly poor section of Miami run by the corporation Global Armaments. Her parents were low-level programmers for GA's weapons and systems development divisions, but they were also unknowingly part of a secret eugenics program run by a back-room division. GA had been attempting to isolate a gene that indicated high AMS compatibility. After isolating the gene, they were able to devise a gene therapy that allowed them to introduce the gene to others genetic structure. The experiments had already produced significant results in children and adults, but GA was interested in the effects of the gene treatment on fetuses. Disguising it as part of pre-natal treatment and care, the unborn Serra was made a part of GA's experiments. She, as well as the many others involved were born with much higher-than-average AMS compatibility. From childhood, the GA executives began secretly pushing her and the others towards careers as Irregulars.

When Serra's high compatibility was "discovered" in a "routine" doctor's visit, her parents were delighted; Irregulars were a privileged class and had benefits and powers that they could never hope to give Serra on their own. They allowed her to join GA's training program. There Serra was subjected to a rigorous battery of tests and trials to weed out those unable to handle the stress of piloting even with high AMS compatibility. The children were simply unable to handle the ordeal on a mental and emotional level. They couldn't understand the psychic stress they were undergoing, and many cracked and went insane. Serra, thankfully, was able to pull through and went on to become an excellent pilot, though her abilities never quite matched up to the potential her high AMS aptitude should have afforded her. Still, Serra became a skilled pilot for Global Armaments, and helped elevate her family out of poverty.

Nine years ago, however, she and the remaining experimental pilots were tasked with destroying an anti-GA terrorist cell in downtown Miami. She and the other Irregulars located their compound and easily destroyed the few Normals defending it, then set out to kill or capture the remaining terrorists. As this task was being completed, Serra spotted her parents in the crowd of gathered terrorists just moments before one of her comrades gunned them down.

Serra flew into a fury and all the potential of her high AMS compatibility came out. She annihilated her comrades, the terrorists, and the compound in her rage before her AC lost its power and shut down. A psychic backlash resulted from the event mixed with the overwhelming effort of maintaining her AMS at such a high level. It damaged her mind to the point of amnesia and forced Serra to abandon her machine. She wandered in a daze with only her name, and was eventually found by a man who brought her with him to one of the nearby slums. The man's name was Vincent Costa, a local drug-baron serving Venezuela's drug kingpin. Serra was turned into Costa's personal slave, though that didn't stop his underlings from abusing her when the chances arose. In her amnesic state, Serra had no concept of another life, and for three years lived under Costa's tyranny.

As it happened, however, Costa had angered the higher ups at Global Armaments, and they hired an Irregular to quickly deal with him and his drug cell. That Irregular was Lance Donovan, who made swift work of Costa and his crew. When everyone was dead, Lance did one last sweep through the compound and found Serra cowering. Recognizing something of himself in her, he surprised himself by taking her with him away from the carnage.

Though Lance had initially planned to simply leave her at a nearby hospital and never see her again, fate seemed to have other ideas in mind. Serra eventually found her way to employment in Collared as an Operator, someone who assists pilots by feeding them tactical information and changes to battle plans. One of her first missions found her paired with Lance, and together they completed the mission in both record time and with a record low of expenses. When they met later to collect their payment, they recognized one another from that fateful day. They decided to form a contract with one another, making them exclusive partners. From that day on, they've been working together.

IV. Psychology

* Outer Goal: Complete the mission. Make it through the day. Maybe try and remember who she is.

* Inner Goal: She's a torn person. She wants to feel like she belongs. Like she is safe and wanted. She wants to remember who she was. But she doesn't want to depend entirely on other people. She wants family, friends, and a life. What she got, unfortunately for all of that, is Lance.

* Superobjective: Serra wants to belong. To feel loved. Above all else she wants family. If not by blood, then by bond.

* Life, career, or personal goals outside of the realm of the story: She wants a family. Not exactly "husband and children" but a group of people that love her and that she loves in return. All she can remember is torture and abuse...and Lance. She wants something good.

* Defining characteristic: Serra is a master of subtlety and deadpan humor, able to throw people off their game with the simplest twist of a phrase or word. She also has a penchant for teasing people, though it's never malicious or done in spite. In this way she's sometimes quite playful, though it's always in her own soft-spoken way. She's quirky in that regard, and often catches people off guard because of it.

* Hopes/desires: Family.

* Fears/phobias: Being alone/abandoned or hurt again...being at the mercy of someone else. Difficulty trusting people.

* Dirty Secrets: She understands Lance better than anyone. She sees him and accepts him. She accepts and understands the Passenger. And isn't afraid of it.

* Introvert or extrovert?: Introvert, though only because her guard is up. She'd love to be the extrovert, if only she trusted people.

* More thinking or feeling?: A bit of both. Plays the only-thinking, but feels quite strongly about many things. Lance's opposite in that regard.

* What do you see is the biggest contradiction(s) your character lives out?: She wants people to trust her but finds it almost impossible to trust them. She wants love and family but spends her time with (of all people) Lance.

* Tends to be self centered? Selfless?: Self-centered at first glance, but once you know her she'd lay down her life for you.

* Favorite and hated foods/drinks: Hated coffee at first. Grew to like it after spending time with Lance. After her long captivity, she's quite happy eating any sort of food and loves trying new things.

* Education or important learning experiences: She can't remember where she was schooled, but her manner of speech and eloquence lend themselves to a well-educated young woman. She's quick to pick up anything mechanical or electronic.

* Most hated activities: the paperwork...that Lance always saddles her with. Watching Lance play up his Mask. Dealing with the Collared bureaucracy.

* Most enjoyed activities: Operating and driving fast.

* Deepest secret or wildest fantasy: Finding the people who tortured and abused her, and killing them. Most of them are already dead, but there are a few remaining. She doesn't know if she'd be able to do it.

* Sense (or lack!) of humor: what makes your character laugh?: Serra is a master of subtlety and deadpan humor, able to throw people off their game with the simplest twist of a phrase or word. She also has a penchant for teasing people, though it's never malicious or done in spite. In this way she's sometimes quite playful, though it's always in her own soft-spoken way. She's quirky in that regard, and often catches people off guard because of it.

* Who is your character's hero, or who do they admire or emulate?: She emulates Lance in the way he really is. She emulates his "unfeelingness" and the way he can't be hurt, hoping that the same will eventually apply to her.

V. Philosophy & Morality

* Attitudes toward:
Self - She thinks very little of herself, and hides behind sarcasm and a wall of protective non-feeling.
Others - It depends on if she can trust them. She wants to. She wants them to trust her.
Friendship - Friendship is a rare thing. True friendship and trust and love between people is something she hasn't quite experienced yet.
Sex - Fun, if usually meaningless. She's had sex but hasn't "made love," and wonders what the difference is (beyond the words). What does it feel like?
Love - Wants it. Needs it. But doesn't know...how.
Family - She wants to belong to a group. Where people care about her and value her. Sounds like family to me.
Marriage - She isn't so naive that she things marriage = love/family. That's something else entirely.
Country - Country? Corporation? None of it really matters.
The World - It's a cruel place. But people have still managed to find happiness in it. Why can't I?
Religion - She prayed each and every day of her captivity. It didn't seem to do her much good.

* Political philosophy: Serra is conflicted. She believes in helping people, but revealing that makes you very vulnerable. In her experience, only strength protects you. Weakness is damning. She hates it, but that's the way things are.

* Superstitions?: She sometimes thinks she's cursed. That everything that's happened to her was done by some malicious force.

* Catchphrase that defines their worldview?: "To mass murder and wanton destruction, and whatever else we're asked to do."

VI. Life & Lifestyle

* Closest friend(s): Lance Donovan. The Dark Passenger

* Job/career/occupation: Collared Operator.

- Attitude towards job: It's a rather safe and easy way to make money and security if you're good at it

* Noted accomplishments: She's a very skilled Operator, known for her unflappability and keeping calm under pressure.

- Famous/infamous?: Infamous for being able to Operate for the speedy White Glint and handle Lance Donovan's (projected) personality.

* Clubs/organizations belonged to: Collared. Formerly Global Armaments America

* Favorite music or group/favorite TV shows or films: She's rather fond of certain reality TV. If only because the lives portrayed on those shows are so over-the-top and ridiculous. She also likes cooking shows.

* Hobbies: Cooking.

VII. Food for Thought

* How would your character react to:

- Inheriting $1 million: That means someone out there knows about her and is willing to leave her...anything. She'd immediately be intrigued

- The death of a loved one: Devastated. Absolutely devastated. It would push her to the breaking point.

- A natural disaster: hurricane/earthquake, etc.: Serra would try to help, and do everything in her power to make things easier.

- Being fired: She wouldn't take it well. Operating is one of the few things she could do.

- Meeting an old friend or enemy not seen for years: She probably wouldn't know who they were. If it was an enemy, it'd be one of the people who kept her captive. She'd likely ask Lance to kill them. Or try to do it herself.

- Having or raising children:

- Being raped/mugged/violated in some way: With her past, one might think she'd be able to cope better, but the distance she's put between herself and her torture has allowed some of those wounds to heal. Having that brought back suddenly and violently would be incredibly difficult for her.

- An unexpected kindness or compliment: This would make things...interesting.

- A serious illness such as AIDS or cancer: Resignation. But it would galvanize her to find something worth living those last few weeks/months/years for.

- A flat tire on the expressway: She'd put the spare on. What kind of stupid question is that?

- An interracial relationship: If people get along, why should race mean anything?

- Five minutes on local or national TV: Maybe someone will recognize her?

More In-depth, thought provoking questions to think about:

A. If your character were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would they most regret not having told someone? Why haven't they told them yet?

She would regret missing the chance to say "goodbye" to anyone at all. She'd try one last time to thank Lance for taking her from captivity. For letting her belong with him.

B. Would your character accept $1,000,000 to leave the county and never set foot in it again?

No. She doesn't really need money that desperately.

There would, of course, be people she'd have no problem killing whatsoever. At first, at least. Once the deed was done, it would probably haunt her and weigh more heavily on her conscience.

D. What would constitute a "perfect" evening for your character?

An evening of quiet. A chance to make something interesting and tasty. Not having to watch Lance play up his mask in a crowded room and then stalk off to do his deadly deeds. She'd want a night where she felt normal.

E. Would your character rather be extremely successful professionally and have a tolerable yet unexciting private life, or have an extremely happy private life and only a tolerable and uninspiring professional life?

She already has the exciting professional life, and isn't all that fulfilled. She'd prefer the happily-quiet private life. One filled with family, friends, and loved ones.

F. If your character could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability or quality, what would it be?

To remember who she was.

Dishonesty? Infidelity?

The lack of permanence, and the following loss, would devastate her. She would do her best to try and forget the knowledge that they'd die. She'd curse the fact that it is all she can remember. Betrayal for her is all of it - indifference, dishonesty, and infidelity. She knows people aren't perfect, and betrayal has levels. But all of those would constitute a betrayal of some kind.

H. Does your character prefer being around men or women? Do their closest friends tend to be men or women?

Her closest friend is a man, but she isn't picky. She really just wants someone she can have a genuine connection with.

I. Would your character be willing to murder an innocent person if it would end hunger in the world?

Probably not. All she'd be able to do is think about the person she killed. About the family, people, and loved ones left behind, and their inability to live out their lives.

J. What is their most treasured memory?

The sight of the White Glint emerging from the fire and smoke, half-covered in blood and ash. Then Lance emerging and making slow, bloody work of Vincent Costa and the men who abused her. Not for her sake, of course--he didn't even know she was there. But because in that moment he was as real as anyone she'd ever seen, and the first person who'd never meant her any harm.

K. If your character knew there would be a nuclear war in one week, what would they do?

Begin planning, preparing, and figuring out a way to stop it.

L. What is the greatest accomplishment of your character's life? Is there anything they hope to do that is even better?

She's an excellent Operator, but there's always room for improvement. Until she can find fulfillment in her private life, she'll seek fulfillment in her professional one.

M. One would be the one material item your character would save during a fire?

She doesn't have many prized possessions. But Lance did give her a jacket once. Probably the first gift she remembers receiving. She'd probably save that if she wasn't already wearing it.

N. Your character is offered $1,000,000 for the following act: before them are ten pistols - only one of which is loaded. They must pick up one of the pistols, point it at their forehead, and pull the trigger. If they can walk away they do so a millionaire. Would they accept the risk?

No. She values her own life too highly to throw it away for money.

O. If your character could choose the manner of their death, what would it be?

Old age. Surrounded by friends and family.

P. For what in your character's life do they feel most grateful?

Her freedom, her security, and the chance to find out where she belongs.

Q. How forgiving is your character?

Quite forgiving. She certainly won't forget, but doesn't always hold a real grudge. She holds them sarcastically, however, and will use them to her advantage should the need arise.

R. When your character tells a story, do they often exaggerate or embellish it? If so, why?

Always. It's more fun that way.

S. How much does your character feel in control of the course of their life?

She finally feels in control. After being freed, she's done everything of her own volition.

T. Is it easy for your character to ask for help when they need it? Will they ask for help?

Serra is very prideful, very strong-willed. It isn't easy for her to admit her limitations and let her guard down.

U. Would your character like to be famous? In what way?

No. She'd rather have a few genuine friends than a million fake ones.

V. What are your character's most compulsive habits? Do they regularly struggle to break those habits?

Serra is scathingly sarcastic. It's a defense mechanism, and many people find it off-putting. She does it so automatically, however, and doesn't always notice before she speaks, often offending or hurting people without meaning to.

W. What does your character strive for most in their life: accomplishment, security, love, power, excitement, knowledge, or something else?

If that isn't apparent by now, you should be ashamed of yourself.

X. How easily embarrassed is your character?

Not very. At all. Why would she be embarrassed when she can turn on a dime and put you in your place with a quick word or phrase?

Y. Does the fact that your character has never done something before increase or decrease its appeal to them?

Most things are things she hasn't done (or hasn't remembered doing). So it's almost all exciting and new.

Z. What’s the most dangerous thing your character has ever done?

Spend an extended amount of time with an easily-bored/agitated Lance in the closed-in back compartment of a Collared transport carrier.

And another spoiler:

"It's not easy to do what you did," said the man in the shadows. He paced around Lance, who almost saw him. But the spotlight overhead obscured anything beyond its edges in the darkness.

"You made my men, some of the most highly trained professionals in the world look like a bunch of minimum-wage mall cops," he said. And Lance chuckled. "In my experience, it takes someone who's received similar training to do what you did to them. Why don't you tell me where you received that training? Afghanistan, Chechnya? No, you strike me more as the soldier of fortune type. Who are you?"

"I'm the monster under your bed," Lance laughed.

"Keep joking," said the man. "No one's coming for you. The few people in the world who know you are dead." He smirked. "Or think you're dead."

"You'd be wise to prove them right," Lance said, through curved lips and flashing teeth.

"I'm sure Special Ops taught you to rattle your captor, but I should warn you," the man began. He walked towards a console and pressed a series of buttons. The darkness around them shattered as the windows slid up, revealing an endless expanse of blue and white sky in every direction. "There's nowhere for you to go."

"Well isn't that clever," Lance muttered, a frown finally creasing his features.

"Clever...and final," said the man. "So you should cooperate. It'll determine just how comfortable the rest of your life will be."

Lance laughed loudly.

"I'm glad you find this amusing," said the man, who still betrayed no emotion of his own. "Because this is your life from now on. You belong to us. And you will spend the rest of your days locked up here. Alone."

"That's the thing, isn't it," Lance mused. "Assuming I'm alone." There was a chord of amused laughter from the dark thing behind his eyes. "Assuming that I'm afraid." The Passenger shuffled restlessly, spreading itself out, rising up and filling the room with its presence. "Assuming that I'm the one at the disadvantage here."

"What do-?"

"You think you've got the advantage. You think I'm locked up all alone," Lance chuckled. "But I'm not really the one locked up with you. You're all in here with me."

The man laughed, and Lance joined him. "Bravado, even now, I like that," the man said. "We're not here at all." He nodded to someone just beyond Lance's sight. "Let's see how that bravado lasts when Dr. Morgan begins his work."

Lance saw the good doctor move from behind him, wheeling a cart of medical tools--scalpels, knives, clamps, pliers, and cutting implements of every sort. He saw the fluttering of darkness in the doctor's eyes, the man's own little shadow-self.

The Dark Passenger chuckled. What sweet irony.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to deliberately make it long (and that wasn't why it took me so long!), it was just that there was so much to reply and react to that it kinda... expanded.

I hope there aren't that many errors in the post. I wrote it partly while at work, and I haven't had time to properly proofread it >> But yeah, it's there anyway. Ready for action here!

Coincidentally, my post is ready. But, since you've just posted, I'm gonna go ahead and proof read it and not post it until tonight.

Sounds like there's finally some use for Obsidian's wire!

Unless I make a really quick, short post now... Hm.

I'm working on a post. It'll be a shorter-ish one.

GoldenHouou

Ah, in that case I'll wait for you first. If your post is short-ish anyway, I can probably comfortably fit in the wire deal even after it.

I'm not sure how well the wire will fit in with it, but I've left a lot of the early battle open to your own interpretation and adaptation.

Enemy images, just for your convenience.

1. Lead super-heavy quad-leg craft. (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=24#/d20ty2c): This guy is insanely tough, with heavy grenade weapon-arms, a back-mounted grenade cannon, back-mounted missile launcher, and shoulder-mounted chain-missiles. Thick armor means it can take an inordinate amount of punishment, and its quad-leg design means that it's surprisingly mobile on the ground, with good agility and turning. Plus it's super-sturdy when firing those grenades, which hurt like a sonova*****.

2. Black heavyweight 1 (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=0#/d2raxwu): This guy's pretty agile for a heavy when it comes to flight. Back mounted proximity-activated missiles (they explode when they get close enough to you making them rather tricky to dodge) and shoulder-mounted chain-missiles pack a whollop. It's got a High-Impact laser rifle in one hand and a Bazooka in the other, both of which hit really hard. The laser can fry an AC's systems for a few critical seconds and the bazooka can knock lighter ones out of the sky or clear onto their backs.

3. Black heavyweight 2 (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=0#/d2raxsn): A lot like the other heavyweight, but with WAY more powerful missiles. It's also got some less-powerful assault rifles, but they're quite accurate at any range.

4. Black lightweight w/snipers (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=24#/d20twt1): Very fast with an extended targeting range because of its specialized camera-eye. The back-mounted radar also improves the accuracy/range of its missiles (back/shoulder) and its two sniper rifles. Unlike a back-mounted sniper cannon, the rifles can be fired more rapidly, though they trade that for slightly decreased range and power (range is made up for with the radar unit).

5. Green-and-white lightweight (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=24#/d20u0od): Very VERY fast and agile, though rather frail when it comes down to it. It's also got an extra-radar unit to help with the accuracy of its back-missiles. The rifle and assault rifle in its hands are also much more accurate and have better range because of it.

6. Heavyweight missile-bazooka-grenade (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=24#/d20twzt): This brute has lots and lots of missiles, meaning lots and lots of missile-spamming. It also has a bazooka and grenade rifle. The bazooka can knock down light-to-medium weights and the grenades have a large blast radius.

7. Lightweight laser-rifle attacking Tungsten (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=48#/d20u3fa)
8. Lightweight laser-blade attacking Tungsten (http://blood-asp0123.deviantart.com/gallery/4011496?offset=48#/d20u3jz)

I won't bother describing the last two since the main team won't be involved with them.

By the way, these aren't my images, I just used them for inspiration. Credit goes to whoever's account that is.

Gonna have to completely ignore the fact that I launched my earlier missiles and gonna have GH bunny the missiles damage as he pleases, then.

Here's another little spoiler for you guys:

The music was loud. Not altogether unpleasant, but loud all the same. And it made listening to her team's chatter through the concealed transmitter in her ear all the more difficult. Trying to discern voices resonating somewhere between the synthesized twirls and the skull-shaking bass was an increasingly impossible task. To top it off, she had to contend with the incessant back-and-forth banter/teasing/foreplay (or whatever the hell they wanted to call it) between Claire and Beatrice, Davis's droningly persistent whining, and Theo's futile attempts to calm the three of them down.

She chuckled despite herself; poor Theo. He was the only one daring enough to wiggle between the two warring divas--neither of whom seemed inclined to acquiesce that the other had some relatively valid arguments; and neither of whom seemed inclined to thank or appreciate Theo for pointing this fact out.

Poor, poor Theo.

On any other night, in any other club, she'd swoop in and rescue him; buy him a drink, invite him to dance, and not take "no" for an answer. Not because she was feeling particularly aggressive at this point--she was just bored, and enjoyed Theo's company well enough. He always had something interesting to say; always honest--brutally so, but never cruel. Not like Lance at all; when what he said was almost always dishonest, and almost always cruel.

But it wasn't any other night. And it wasn't any other club. And it was Lance--not Theo--who was on her mind. Infuriating as that was. Because it had been Lance's idea. He was the one who'd suggested using the club as a surveillance venue. He was the one who'd roped her into that ridiculous dance. Theo hadn't said a word to her since then. For someone who always claimed to hate being the center of attention, Lance had certainly managed to make them a main attraction.

And maybe that was part of his plan. Fine. Who was she to question the man's covert operational proficiency? Lance could change cover identities and stories as easily as most people changed their socks--more easily in some cases. That was never in doubt. Neither, really, was his sanity--despite what the rest of the team often claimed and feared.

No, what she was beginning to doubt was his stability. Lance was always walking a razor's edge with regards to humanity and morality--never really having either, but always pretending at both. And that had always been enough. Enough to make him the lovable monster and not your average neighborhood sociopath. But Serra sensed recently that he was slipping. And all his vaunted control, that impeccable mask that he'd spent years perfecting, was beginning to fray.

All this, because she couldn't see him. She didn't even have a sense of where he was in the room. He'd just vanished. He'd danced with Claire, danced that absurdly over-the-top dance with her, and then something had caught his eye; she'd noticed his split-second slip during their dance--that instant of uncharacteristic hesitation. And before she knew it he'd disappeared into the mass of bodies. He was in full-on "monster mode," and that wasn't good.

"Does anyone have eyes on Lance?" she muttered over the still-ongoing arguments. Claire and Beatrice still going at it. And with the way Beatrice refused to drop the argument, Serra was almost starting to wonder if there wasn't some sort of jealousy over Claire's dance with Lance…though whether that jealousy was directed at Lance or Claire, Serra couldn't quite yet deduce.

At least, that's what she'd be thinking if she didn't know any better.

"I thought he was with you," Claire said. Serra caught sight of her stopping Beatrice with a raised palm, much to Bea's fury.

"He disappeared after the dance," Serra said, frowning.

"You mean he didn't stick around after that display you two put on?" she heard Beatrice mumble. "What a catch, that one."

"You'd do better to hide your obvious jealousy," Serra deadpanned, still scanning the crowd. Where the hell was he? "I'm sure Claire will dance with you if you ask nicely. Or not. Maybe nice isn't her thing."

"Wow. She just went there," Davis gasped. Theo chuckled under his breath.

"Can we get back on topic?" Serra almost-growled. "Lance. Where?"

"I saw him at the bar with a woman," Cynthia cut in. Of course the Russian assassin would have kept her eye on him.

"Shocker," Beatrice muttered.

"Nah, I don't think they'd do that at the bar," Davis waved her off. "I mean, I'm all for engaging in compromising positions, but that's a little bit physically difficult, don't you think?"

"I didn't mean--gah!" Bea groaned. She threw up her arms. "You're impossible." Luckily, Theo was able to stop her before she stormed off.

"Lance wouldn't just abandon the op for a woman," Serra said, so sure of herself. Not even me, she added silently. "Something must be up. Cynthia, what did she look like?"

"I'd say twenty-five years old. Approximately five feet-eight inches tall. Dark hair--long. Olive skin--maybe Middle Eastern-European mix. I'd say…a 36C. 36-26-34 all around, I'd say."

"Not that you were paying such close attention or anything," Davis quipped.

"I observe," she said, dismissively. "I have a very good eye."

"Yeah? Me too. But that's really specific," Davis said. "Do you have a good eye for everything or just…36C sort of things?"

"You mean you can't tell me Lance's measurements?" Cynthia shot back.

"Well, I--"

"Can we please get back to finding the guy who planned this operation?" Juliana snapped over the comm. "While you guys all got to go clubbing, the rest of us had to sit in this crummy hotel room hunched over our screens."

"It was the deluxe suite," Claire said, rolling her eyes. "Let's keep things in perspective."

"Well the five of us are here all alone while the rest of you got to go out and have a good time," Juliana said. "How's that for perspective?"

Claire just scoffed.

"I've got an image pulled from Lance's micro-camera. He turned it off, though," Mariette cut in. "It's the woman. She's…pretty. I mean…if you're into tall, dark, and…perfect." She sent the image to Serra's phone.

Her stomach dropped.

"Oh no," Serra muttered, her eyes wide.

"Something wrong?" Claire asked. She managed to catch the redhead's eyes across the bar. "Something's wrong. What is it?"

"Talya Ravi-ravi," Serra gasped, before letting slip an uncharacteristic, "oh, ****."

"Who is she?"

"Bad news. Very bad," Serra said. She tried scanning the crowd again, looking for Lance. But she already knew it was futile. They were long gone. "She was Shabak--Shin-Bet, Israeli Intelligence--before joining Lance in the Special Forces. She's an Irregular."

"And?"

"And she's very bad for Lance to be around."

"What?" Claire frowned. "Please. How?"

"She's a bad influence."

"A bad influence, for Lance? No way," Davis scoffed. He turned back to the bar and had his drink refilled. "What does she do, kill puppies? And is that even so bad for Lance?"

"She pushes him," Serra said. "She makes him lose control."

"How?"

"She's exactly like him."
