Steel-Type Pokémon of the Week

Pokémon: Metagross http://sprites.pokecheck.org/i/376.gif
Tier: OU
Ability: Clear Body
Item: Air Balloon
Nature: Adamant
EV Spread: 252 Atk, 252 HP, 4 SpD
Moves: Earthquake, Bullet Punch, Zen Headbutt, Meteor Mash/Ice Punch
Summary: Oh Metagross, a Pokémon that has a good Attack stat, which is actually better than Scizor's, but he is still less used than the Bug due to it's Technician Ability. Metagross actually surpasses Scizor in all areas Stat wise. However, the metal menace sports two very common weaknesses, Ground and Fire. While an Air Balloon negates Ground's effect, Fire still remains strong and is able to OHKO Metagross even while it's holding an Occa Berry. However, Metagross has it's uses. Earthquake gives it the ability to hit Fire, Electric, Poison, Steel, and Rock, one of which is it's main weakness. Bullet Punch provides the ability to hit things much faster than it such as Volcarona. Despite this move being used to cause at least a small portion of damage, speedy Pokémon tend to be defensively weak, allowing a decent amount of damage to be done. Zen Headbutt provides STAB with a chance to flinch on top of an already great Attack. The last spot can be used for either Meteor Mash which hits hard and provides STAB or Ice Punch, which is a great counter for Dragons. Metagross would be a widely used Dragon counter due to resisting it and learning Ice Punch, but due to Dragons wide movepool and the ability to learn Fire moves, he is often rendered useless against them. As can be seen, Metagross is a powerful Pokémon, who's main downfall is the condition of the current metagame, which includes the more powerful Scizor, and the number of Pokémon able to learn Fire and Ground type moves.

Yeah I know.
So let's get a topic going!
What is the best steel-type legendary?
I personally think that Heatran is great. I love its design and also its secondary type of fire.
I'm not really sure if it's good in competitive play but I have used it on PS and done pretty well with it before.
As for the other steel legendaries I feel that Jirachi is cute but I tend to not like "cute" pokemon.
Registeel, Genesect, Cobalion, and Dialga also don't disappoint and are listed from most favorite to least favorite, although I like them all

Well, thanks for responding Cyrius. XD

It's really hard for me to choose my favorite steel type legendary, because I like them all, and actually feel that they might have the best legendary line up.

I think it would go like this, ranking wise: 1. Cobalion 2. Dialga 3. Registeel 4. Genesect 5. Heatran 6. Jirachi

But I really like all of them alot.

Thank you! and as for the topic:

My favorite is Dialga (as stated in Application) because it has a unique typing, and its shiny form looks really awesome! It also has only 2 weaknesses, and fighting isnt really common in Ubers. and my style of battle is to Defensive Stall, so he suits my needs well.

Yea those first two reasons are the ones I like.
Also kind of off topic but when do you guys want to have a tourney?
When we have 8 members or 16 members?

Hurray for new members!

Now for a topic: What is the best typing to go alongside steel?

It might be flying for me, because, for one, it take away the fighting weakness, makes Ground an immunity rather than a weakness, and for flying, it takes rock away as a weakness.

What is the best steel-type legendary?
gunna have to say genesect

i Vmd you the better way to do it!!!!!

What is the best steel-type legendary?

Cobalion! Because it's design is boss, and I had great experience with it in my White 2 playthrough. Not only is he my favorite steel type legendary, but he's my favorite legendary, period, and my 3rd favorite pokemon of all time.

BugPokemonMaster316

I tried but I still can't get the link to work :/

anyway my favorite Steel legendary is Heatran. Not sure if it's good in competitive play, but it has an amazing design. Plus its not weak to fire.

No dude, E-series, as in the the gold and silver generation. EX crystal guardians is way newer than that. you can actually swipe the cards into the pokmeon TCG game on your gameboy advance with those.

dont think i have a heatran. but i do have Lv X Luxray, and Donphan Prime, Absol Prime, and Machamp prime from Triumphant, and i have both peices of the Kyogre and Groudon legend from Undaunted.

Good luck with the shiny hunt if you cant rng >.>

Yveltal96
26th April 2013, 3:07 AM
What region do you believe had the best/worst Steel-types?

Well i think Hoenn for sure had the worst Steel types

for the best region for steel types, that is really a tough choice
it would either be Johto or Unova for me
if you were to ask me one generation ago, it would have been Johto for sure, but pokemon like durant, ferrothorn, excadrill, genesect, and escavalier it is hard to say that this last region didn't arguably have the best steel types

BugPokemonMaster316
26th April 2013, 3:08 AM
Thanks Cyrius
I tried to rng but its confusing
I'll just have to get the shiny charm and hope I find some shinies

Yep, completely agree. Hoenn was the worst for steels. The aron line is the only one I think there was if i'm not mistaken.
And then Unova came along and there were loads of Steel types

BugPokemonMaster316

I'd have to say that Johto had the best. I mean I mean it has Scizor which is great in competitive play and one of my favorite Pokémon. It also had Skarmory with the great typing of Steel/Flying. Then there was Steelix which I use with Spikes and Dragon Tail.

So yea Johto was the best.
Also @Master Ask, Hoenn also had Mawile, Registeel, Beldum line, and Jirachi as well as the Aron line.
So Hoenn wasn't that bad

now that i think about it, i think sinnoh had the worst steel types there are only a few with good enough use

Wow, I leave for a couple hours, and this club explodes! I'm so glad it's doing well now.

Topic wise, I'd have to agree with Yveltal that Gen 2 and 5 were really great generations for steel types.

I mean, we have cool stuff like Steelix, Skarmory, and Scizor for Gen 2, but for Gen 3 we have Ferrothorn, Genesect, and COBALION!!!!!

However, I certainly disagree that gen 3 is the worst. It had awesome pokes like Aggron, Metagross, and Registeel.

Really, all generations are amazing (except gen 1, obviously), as far as steel types go, so I couldn't possibly pick a favorite.

Yveltal96
26th April 2013, 4:27 AM
yeah i mean the only problem i have with gen 3 steel type wise, is that the only one that made it really high competitively is metagross and registeel
sure aggron is cool and all but because of his secondary rock typing, he DROPPED so much in the tiers

BugPokemonMaster316
27th April 2013, 12:29 AM
Yea its a shame aggron's dropped so much, but I still like him
And yes Colt all the generations are amazing. Even gen 1 is although it only had magnemite and magneton
I can't really decide what 1 is the worst as they are all good, but if I had to pick it be gen 4.
Even heatran can't make up for that awful Probopass

true lol probopass is pretty derpy looking O_O
and he has a terrible secondary typing in rock giving him 2 4X weaknesses
but other than that, he's pretty useful
if pinsir evolves, maybe he will be part steel

BugPokemonMaster316

I'm not sure he'll be part steel but you never know.

What kind of Steel-Type moves would you like to see in Generation 6?

so the move would be a steel type move but has a 30% chance to poison the enemy

Time for a new topic!

What is your favorite secondary Steel typing?
Bug for sure! Scizor, Forretress and so on own!

BugPokemonMaster316
7th June 2013, 1:13 AM
Agreed! Bug is by far the best typing we have for Steel. With only a weakness to fire it is very good. Also, Forretress is a good SR and Spikes user and Scizor is an insane attacker. Steel/Grass is also very good, having only two weaknesses.

Colt45
7th June 2013, 1:20 AM
No... definitely not by far the best, and probably not the best at all. 4x weaknesses are never good, especially with something as prominent as Fire, plus, it also takes away three resistances that Steel already had, besides Fire, and makes them neutral. I'd say its best dual-typing is maybe Flying. It only adds one weakness, Electric, which is a weakness Steel should obviously already have anyway, and it takes away Fighting as a weakness, and not only takes away ground, but makes it immune to it.

Yveltal96
7th June 2013, 1:23 AM
I don't see why four times weaknesses are bad. Scizor, Forretress, and Genesect are all in high tiers. Besides the topic is called your favorite secondary typing

BugPokemonMaster316
7th June 2013, 1:25 AM
True, I almost forgot about Steel/Flying. Skarmory is very good in competitive play from what I have heard. But, I think Steel/Bug is pretty good too, but mainly because of the Pokémon themselves and their stats, not the typing.

Colt45
7th June 2013, 1:26 AM
I didn't use the topic, I was just replying to BugMaster's claim that it was the best. 4x weaknesses aren't the only problem, it also gives Steel less resistances and more neutralities (is that a word?) Flying only gives it one more neutrality, while Bug gives it 3.

Edit: Yeah, I know there can be a Bug/Steel Pokemon better than a Steel/Flying Pokemon, but that's not what I mean, I'm not taking into account the Pokemon associated with those typings at all, just the mechanics of the typing.

BugPokemonMaster316
7th June 2013, 1:30 AM
Yeah, I mean there's pros and cons to all typings, but I think that overall for Steel, Steel/Bug and Steel/Flying are the best for reasons stated before.

Colt45
7th June 2013, 1:34 AM
There's really Pros for all types associated with Steel. Steel is truly an amazing type, and has pretty much every type being to get paired with it, because it always gives them a shitton of resistances. Steel can do good with pretty much any typing. (Rock is an exception, poor Aggron.)

Thanks man!

But anyway, skarmory is also one of my favourite pokemon and as you mentioned its typing is very good.. but I kinda want it to get an evolution.
I use attacking pokemon, so if it gave up some defense for a better attack that would be fine with me.

Then eviolite skarmory would be a beast :D

And water/steel is a good typing, especially in empoleons case, as it has the water moves to counter the ground weakness and then drill peck/pluck to counter the fighting weakness... whilst also having 11 resistances still and that poison immunity.

BugPokemonMaster316
7th June 2013, 2:01 AM
;212; I'd love a Skarmory evo too, but eviolite Skarmory would just be a nightmare. Plus it already seems like there would be no way to expand it's design. Then again you never know.
Also, Empoleon is very good due to it's Steel typing. No Grass weakness and it easily counters it's main weaknesses.

Nice man. Now new topic!
Does anyone think that Chespin or any other Gen 6 Pokémon revealed so far will be a Steel Type?
I personally think Chespin will become a steel type since his spikes point towards him having a hard, armor-like shell. Also, the red point on his tail could develop into a mace-like object similar to the outer casing of a chestnut. If this happens, I could see Chespin's Evo being a part steel type.

Yveltal96
7th June 2013, 2:10 AM
I prefer grass/steel to water/steel anyday. Yeah, sure water counters a ground weakness, but Ferrothorn does a better job of that, because he doesn't have to rely on water moves to get rid of pesks like storm drain gastrodon, in which case water moves would only help it

Colt45
7th June 2013, 2:54 AM

Not sure what you mean by in that respect, but Steel type is used quite a bit for a number of reasons.
One, it is the only type that resists dragon. Two, it creates some of the best type combinations as it is the best defensive typing in the book.

BugPokemonMaster316

Yes, from what I've heard, Steel types are very good in competitive play.
Now, Onto a new topic!
What are some new type combinations for steel that you would like to see?
I would very much like to see a Ghost/Steel type. I would have no idea what it would look like but it would negate the weaknesses of fighting, ghost, and dark.
AS for an ability, levitate would be pretty sweet. Then it's only weakness would be fire, so I could definitely see a Pokémon like this high up in the tiers if it had good stats.

Yveltal96

And yeah, Fairy/Steel would be interesting. I just have trouble imagining what a steel/fairy would look like, but GF will figure it out.
Another interesting type would be Steel/Poison. It would be super-effective against fairies(if the rumors are true) and would resist Dragon! It's main drawback would be X4 weakness to Ground, but that's what Levitate is for.

BugPokemonMaster316

Why do you like Steel-Types: Super-defensive Pokémon, Steel types are very tough to deal with in battle. The designs of Steel types are creative, too, as not all steel types are cobalt blue or gray-silver (Scizor, Empoleon, Honedge, etc.)

I'm glad we don't have claims so we can all enjoy Steel types!

What about the certain Steel-Types could be done better?

For me.. Skarmory's Attack-stat. Could've been just a bit stronger

It's really funny you say that because right now I'm doing a Ruby run through and I realized that too. Skarmory's attack stat just isn't there. I really can't think of any other Steel Types with that probelm.

Maybe Forretress? I know he's used mostly as a Wall, to use Toxic ans what not. I feel he should've had have better stats in other areas besides his Defensive stat, because it was quite difficult to use.

in response to the current topic, i feel that Bonzong shouldve had a higher Special attack stat being psychic and all. That way a mixed set would work better, or a special side to it like lucario or toxicroak

@BAP Blackjack, you've been accepted as well!

Thanxorus!

I think Bronzong is good he way it is. It's meant to be slow with good-moderate Special Attack and great defenses so it could be a better wall or dual screener, which I really don't use for it.

They should add a new steel-type move in XY with awesome base power, like around 100 that most Steels can learn. Im imagining some kind of slash, with Honedge being used to show it off. Im just sick and tired of sticking iron head on everything...

That and most Steel moves that do high damage lack accuracy. Sometimes just really frustrating and a new move would be awesome.

I agree that a new move would be good for Steel types, but remember, their main trait is to be a defensive wall. Well, most anyway.

I actually do have a new move idea, (that I stole from Yveltal96). He suggested that there be a Steel move that has a 30% chance to poison the foe. This would make sense based on mercury or lead.

Heres a topic: current Steel-Types that could get an evolution or pre-evolution. I have suggested Skarmory getting a Steel/Deagon evo, but was quickly reminded of eviolite... It would still be pretty neat, though

BugPokemonMaster316
30th July 2013, 9:08 PM
Yeah, Eviolite Skarmory would be a nightmare to face. It'd be on almost every team lol.

I'm actually trying to think of one that could get an evolution. Mawile could definitely use one. If the rumors of it becoming Steel/Fairy came true and it got an evo it would be so OP.
It would be able to beat Fairies and Dragons. But that's only if the rumors are true.

Another one in need is Durant. That one has so much potential. I have never used Durant, but from what I've heard people say it could be very good if it got an evo. Tell me your thoughts on this.

I used Durant in the e4 in Black and loved it. I considered it a mini Scizor. It has good attack and speed, and a nice ability, it just didnt survive for very long. Eviolite would solve that problem easily, but i dont know what its evolution would be, other than just a bigger ant.

Perhaps it could evolve into a fire ant and become a Fire/Steel type? Or maybe a split evo in which it either become a fire ant, Fire/Steel, or remains Steel/Bug and becomes a =n ant with wings, larger jaws, and gets more legs. That would be pretty cool.

Now, I have an announcement to make! There is going to be a new section to the OP and it will be: The Steel-Type Pokémon of the Week!

You can vote once each week for which Pokémon you want to be featured! The review of each will be written by me, and not be a Smogon or Serebii review, but may have some influences from them. So here are this week's choices!

Yeah. It could work competitively very well. You could use two Steel Types with different weaknesses such as Scizor and Heatran, giving them Bullet Punch and Iron Head respectively. The move would gain 20 base power for each Steel move and Pokémon, giving you a +80 BP bonus to the original base power of 20. Could be slightly OP.

I think that Steel will be super effective against Fairy, and here's why. To me Fairy gives me a nature like vibe. Similar to guardians of nature almost. This comes from Flabebe living on a flower, and Xerneas being seen in heavily forested areas. Now, Steel would be super effective as it would represent construction and destruction of the environment to make more buildings. Hence why Fairies, the guardians of nature, would be weak to Steel, construction and habitat destruction.

My apologies lol.

But seriously, Steel resists Dragon and is a great counter. Scizor can be very good. It can beat Fairies with Bullet Punch, take down Hydreigon with Bug Bite, and BP can finish off most Dragons, while being resistant to Outrage. With Roost, Scizor can endure the attacks until the opponent is confused, and boom, that's how it goes.

Unless the Dragon has a Lum Berry and Fire Blast, then you have a problem.

Such as my Hydreigon on PS has Fire Blast. And I believe that Steel is a good type against Fairys along with some others, such as Fire and Dark

I am in love with Honedge. It's typing provides it with only 2 weaknesses and a large amount of immunities and resistances. Plus, it gains No Guard, meaning this thing could become a monster in the metagame if it has high attack and speed.

On the dex spec thread, there was an idea that it becomes a floating chestplate with Honedge's eye serving as the head,as if the sword was sheathed in the armor. What I'm thinking though is that it might be this gen's Spiritomb, but with better stats.

Yveltal96

You don't know what FEAR is? Well, it stands for
-Focus Sash
-Endeavor
-(Quick) Attack
-Rattatta (Rattata are not the only Pokémon that can use F.E.A.R; multiple Pokémon can fit this role.)

How it works for Aron, is you set him up in a Sandstorm, and since he has Sturdy, he doesn't need a Focus Sash. Instead you give him a Shell Bell. By using Endeavor and being a slow level one Pokemon, it will drop your opponent down to one HP, and those that aren't Rock, Steel, or Ground, get finished off by the sandstorm, and because of the Shell Bell, Aron will be back at full health again, letting him Endeavor yet another victim. Also, he has an immunity to toxic, so he cannot be toxic stalled.

Oh and can I claim Metagross please?

Welcome, and yes, Metagross is yours.

Also, yes, I know that strategy. Just didn't know there was an abbreviation for it.

And if you outspeed it then there screwed lol

Learned to do that fast

Hooray, I'm a member! ^^

What is your favourite basic Steel Type?

I'm going to have to go with Magnemite - it is basic and just all around cool - good design and not bad, not to mention it's evolutions.

Magnemite was the first Pokemon not to be basic-ed on an animal lol

What animal do you think Magnmite would've been basic-ed off of? I'd say a messed up bird

New topic.

Do you think that Steel Types are underrated?

I personally do not think they are underrated. Most people can have some trouble facing certain Steel Types without a specific counter.

They are often on many competitive teams, due to their bulkiness. However, I do feel that certain Steel Types are underrated.

One is Aggron. Sure, he isn't that useable do to 2 4X weaknesses, but he can be a decent attacker. The same goes for Metagross. He is often overlooked as most people would much rather use Scizor.

This tournament actually sounds fun. Steel is mainly defensive, and Poison cannot be inflicted, so I really want to see how all of us do!

And for the topic, I think the absolute opposite. Since Steel types are known for being quite sturdy and defensive, alot of people will use them for that quality. Scizor is one of the main Offensive Steel types (the others being Lucario, Excadril, and even Empoleon).
Alot of people use them and I'm glad Steel types are not underrated.

Why do you like Steel-Types: I find Steel types to be great defensively (I have one steel type on my team (Metagross) and use him as a bulky stealth rock user. The designs for steel type pokemon are pretty unique which is another plus, as well as the fact that they took some of the coolest pokemon of the first generation, (Onix and Scizor) and made them amazing looking.
Scizor
P.S. I'm new to the club scene, and would also like to claim Aggron if possible. If not Aggron then Bisharp.

Welcome to the club man! I also really like the designs of Scizor and Steelix.

Also, a better SR user would be Skarmory or Forretress. Skarmory can set up Spikes and SR and then use Whirlwind to inflict some damage on multiple Pokémon. Give it Roost if you want to be able to continuously use Whirlwind, or Brave Bird if you want some extra damage on a specific target.

Well, according to Yveltal you are.

I know, Steel is one of the best types out there. Anyone that thinks that Steel-types are underrated is obviously crazy. They have a ton of resistances, an immunity, and are potentially super-effective against the newest type, which will be very common since it is super-effective against Dragon.

Since we don't have any moves that can poison steel types (god forbid we ever do have one of those in future gens), there will not be any Poison conditions.
Burn is a different story, Heatran and Empoleon are Burn risks for OU Steel so investing in Excadrill or lucario will not be a problem and make things easier for you guys.

Yes, I have a feeling that Lucario will be on almost every team in the tournament.

However, we still need more people for it! So far we only have 3. Yveltal will most likely join.

Also, any ideas for future tournaments?

Aggron and Steelix are not good defensive walls. They can both easily be OHKO'd by a Close Comabat if they don't have Sturdy.

A good one is Forretress. You can set up Stealth Rocks and Spikes with it and Toxic if you want as well. Give him Rapid Spin to get rid of hazards and you're good. He can absorb most physical attacks and him only weakness is Fire.
