This story is a one-shot
As promised, here is my one-shot to all of you Contestshippers. But first a little info. As you recall in my story Four Weddings, A Funeral, and a Baby, May gets pregnant. Well, I made that story a good 8 months ago and at the time, I wanted to put in another little story in that one, but never did. So now, I finally decided to put this one. Keep in mind, this takes place about ten years into the future and May is about five, six months pregnant. So anyways, enjoy the story!
One night after returning from Saffron City, Caroline came up to greet them at the door. “Oh May, Drew, I was so worried. Please tell me you didn’t do it May. Your father and I want you to get married but not like that” she said. May then stopped her mom in the middle of her rant and said that they didn’t go through with eloping. “In the end, we just decided that we would like to have an actual wedding with all of our friends and family there. Plus, Ash and Misty offered to do a double wedding, so I guess the wedding date will be in three months” said May. Caroline said that she was very happy that they’ve reached a decision but wondered if it would be enough time before the baby is born. Drew then reassured Caroline that May’s due date would be three weeks after the wedding. Caroline then apologized to them for all of the interfering she’s been doing. In their room, May sat down in the bed and kissed Drew on the cheek. May began to hold her stomach and said the baby started to kick. As Drew felt her stomach, he started to smile. As soon as May fell asleep, Drew turned on the television. The news was on doing a special report.
Reporter #1: All of the top Pokemon Coordinators everywhere are heading to the Johto region for the new Contests being held all around. DJ Mary is in Johto with a live report.
DJ Mary: Thank you. I’m here in New Bark Town, where the first contest will be held. Earlier today, I got a chance to speak to three-time Ribbon Cup winner Robert and he is excited and ready to get started. Live from the contest hall in New Bark Town, I’m DJ Mary.
As Drew turned off the television, he started to think to himself. “What should I do? What am I saying? I know that I should stay with May” he thought. The next morning, Drew was out and about Petalburg, picking up a few things for May. Just as Drew left a market, he bumped into an old friend. “Saori, what are you doing here in Petalburg” he asked. Saori told Drew that she was on her way to Johto to compete in more contests. “What about you Drew? I really haven’t heard much from you within the last few months. What’s been going on? Have you been in any contests recently” she asked. Drew said that he was kind of taking a break away from contests. Just then, Harley walked up to them. “Well if it isn’t Drew. How are you” he asked. Drew quickly said that he was fine and that he was going to be leaving now. Harley stopped Drew and asked him if he was going to Johto for all of the contests. When Drew said he didn’t think so, Harley stopped him and said, “Oh why is that Drew? Could it be that you are chicken? You may have beaten me five months ago, but I have been training and this time you are going down. It’s a shame really, to have May think you are a loser. I wouldn’t blame her for leaving you for another great coordinator. I bet you got your little butt whooped by a real coordinator and that’s why you’re not competing. Well, suit yourself. As for me, I am on my way to Johto.” As Harley left, Drew silently growled and said that he was now going to Johto.
As he walked away, his confidence shattered and he remembered May. “Damn, this is such a hard decision. What to do. Okay, I will go to Johto for one contest and fight against Harley, and then I will go back to Petalburg to May. When he returned to the house, Drew saw May lying down on the couch. As she tried to get up, Drew ran over and told May to just stay still. As he asked how she was doing, May told her him that she was okay except that her feet felt all swollen. Drew smiled and offered to give May a foot rub. “Oh thank you Drew, I’m so glad that I have you” she said. Drew then gave a sad look as he rubbed May’s foot. That night as May slept, Drew sat at the edge of the bed writing down a note. After he finished, he put the note next to her bed along with a single rose, he looked at May for a couple of seconds, gave her a kiss, and quietly left the house. As Drew walked away from the house, he started to tear up and began to run. That next morning, May woke up, but she didn’t see Drew right next to her. As she got up, she saw a note and the rose next the bed and read the note aloud.
I cannot begin to tell you how much I love you. But I will not be here for a while. I will be traveling in the Johto region and I don’t know when I will be back. Hopefully, this journey will not take long. I just know that I cannot come back until this unfinished business is finished. That’s all I can say. I promise that when I get back, we will get married.
After reading the letter, May began to cry. Then she got up as fast as she could and went outside to see if she could catch him. She came out of her house crying out Drew’s name. In all of the drama, Caroline ran to see what was wrong with May. “He’s gone! Drew is gone! I don’t know where he is! DREW! DREW” May yelled out. Finally, she stopped and sobbed uncontrollably on her mom’s shoulder. Later that day, Misty was over visiting May. “I can’t believe Drew would just leave me like this. Why would he do this? He told me that he would never leave me” May cried out. When Misty wondered where Drew could have gone, May told her that the note said that he was traveling to Johto. As Misty put her arm around May, she wondered if Drew journeyed to the Johto region for the string of contests that were there. When May asked what she was talking about, Misty then said, “Well I saw it on the news the other night. There are a bunch of coordinators heading over to New Bark Town for the first contest. May then walked over to her phone. After dialing, Kelly’s face appeared on the screen. “Kelly, I need your help. Drew has run out! He’s somewhere in the Johto region. Please Kelly, I don’t know what to do” she cried out. Kelly then told May to slow down and to calmly tell her what was going on. Once May told Kelly everything she knew, Kelly told her that she was heading to Johto herself and that if she saw Drew, she would report back.
For the next three weeks, Drew was roaming around the Johto region, going to different contest halls in search of Harley, but so far no luck. Back in Petalburg, May got bigger and more depressed. Luckily, she has been receiving letters from Drew. But in every letter, it just said the same thing saying that he doesn’t know when he’ll return. Every day that Drew has been gone, May would usually sit by the door and wait for his return. One afternoon, May was just lying down on the couch with her Delcatty. “Anybody home” a voice said outside the door. May’s eyes lit up, went to the front, and opened the door, but all it was, was her brother Max. “Oh sis, I was so worried about you. I hope that you’re okay” he said. May smiled and said she’s okay. Max then said he was sorry for not coming by the house sooner since it took him longer to get back to Petalburg. “I cannot believe Drew abandoned you like this May. If I ever see him, I’m going to kick his ass” he yelled out. May told Max to calm down and said that she doesn’t think Drew abandoned her, but wherever he is, she is sure that Drew will come back. But for the meantime, she just really misses him. In Pallet Town, Brock was at Misty’s house and told her that he has been trying to keep up with every girl he has met in Johto to see if any of them saw anyone fitting the description of Drew. “Even though most of the girls I called threatened me with a restraining order, they said that they would keep an eye out for him” he said. Meanwhile in Johto, Drew was out in a forest with Roselia. As they sat around a little bonfire, Drew wondered if he really should have left Petalburg like that. Roselia noticed Drew’s pain and tried to comfort him. “Thank you Roselia. You are always a comfort and a joy to me. God, I just miss May so much. I hope that she and the baby are okay” he said.
About another two weeks have passed and still no sight of Drew. One early morning, May went into her parent’s room holding onto her stomach and complaining about weird pains. Caroline got up and told May not to worry, but they were going to go to the hospital. At the hospital, Norman and Caroline were in the waiting room. Soon enough, the doctor came out to talk to them. When Caroline asked if her daughter was going to be okay, the doctor said, “Well May had some early contractions, which can happen in the sixth or seventh month. We’re going to keep her here for a couple of days for observation. But not to worry Caroline, you’re daughter is in good hands.” In Azalea Town, Drew entered the contest hall they had there and asked the girl at the front desk if a coordinator by the name of Harley signed up for this contest. The girl then told Drew that no one by that name has entered. A little later, Drew was at a little café. As he drank his tea, all he could think about was May and the fate of his unborn child. Inside, they had the television on and the news was covering another contest.
DJ Mary: Hello all! I’m outside the Mahogany contest hall with the winner of the contest, Harley. Tell us Harley, you’ve won three ribbons in just a short period of time. How does it feel?
Harley: Oh my, you flatter me Mary. It feels great! I couldn’t have done it without my super fans and of course the love and respect I get from my love Tucker. It’s a shame though; I know that there are some coordinators out there who are just a disgrace to the whole contest scene.
DJ Mary: So what town will be your next stop in Johto?
Harley: I will be going to the contest hall in Blackthorn City.
As Drew finished his drink, he set his sights to Blackthorn City and will finally have his day. Back at the hospital, Caroline and Norman were sitting by May’s side. May was sleeping in her bed. Just then, she woke up in a panic and said, “I have to get home. Drew might be there. Let me go! Drew might be home.” Caroline held onto her daughter and told her to just calm down and May started to cry. “Oh please honey, don’t cry. Max is home and he promised that he would call the hospital if Drew comes back” she said. As May started to cry on her mom’s shoulder, Caroline hugged her daughter and thought to herself. “Oh May, it just breaks my heart to see you in this much pain” she thought. Just then, a nurse escorted Misty into the room. Misty ran over to see how May was doing. May wiped away a tear from her face and told her that she’ll be okay. “Oh Drew, where are you? I miss you so much” May thought.
About three days have passed and Drew finally made it to Blackthorn City. As soon as he made it to the contest hall, he went to sign up for the contest. The lady at the front desk told him that the contest was not going to go on for another three days. Drew thanked the lady at the desk and decided to do some training outside. Near the contest hall, Kelly was walking around with her Grumpig. All of a sudden, they hear a trainer call out a Roselia. She looked through the bushes and she saw Drew. “Oh my goodness, it is Drew. I finally found him! I better call May right away” she said. Back in Petalburg, Max was at the home sitting with his Kirlia. All of a sudden, the phone began to ring. When he picked it up, Kelly came on the screen and told Max that she finally found Drew. “Oh this is great! May is coming home from the hospital today, she’ll be so happy” he said. Just in that time, Caroline, May, and Misty came through the door and Max came running up to them. “May, Kelly was just on the phone. She found Drew! He’s in Blackthorn City in Johto” he said. May started to tear up and said that she had to go to Johto. When Caroline begged her not to do it, May refused to listen and said that she had to see Drew. Misty then offered to drive her to Blackthorn.
The next day while Drew did some training with all of his pokemon, Harley came up behind him. “Well, look who came to Johto. I must say Drew, you’re a lot more gutsy then I thought” he said. Drew glared at him for a second and told Harley that he will beat him in the contest in two days. After that, Drew got mobbed by the media scene and Harley walked away. So many of the TV stations and other media people came up to Drew, seeing as he was a world famous coordinator and this being his first contest in six months. Drew nervously smiled, flicked his hair, and told the people that he had no comment. Meanwhile, Misty and May were about halfway to Blackthorn. May really didn’t say too much and would occasionally pull out a picture of Drew and stare at it. “Oh Drew, I missed you so much. This has been the longest five weeks of my life. I only hope that you missed me as much too” she thought.
The following morning, Drew tried to continue with his training, but kept getting interrupted by someone from the people of the media. Just then, more and more people crowded around Drew and this time there were coordinators as well. At that time, Misty and May arrived in front of the contest hall. When May got out of the car, she saw a swarm of people crowded around. May asked a man near her what everyone was looking at. “It’s the famous coordinator Drew. He’s finally returned and he’s going to enter this contest tomorrow” he said. Then all of the girls in the crowd said that he was so dreamy. Just then, May’s eyes lit up and she started calling out Drew’s name. As Drew talked to some of the people, he heard a faint call of his name. He then made his way through the mob and after pushing his way through, he saw May. May started to tear up and ran into Drew’s arms. “Oh May, I missed you so much. My you’ve gotten big…and I mean that in the nicest possible way I can” he said. As May clutched onto Drew, everyone in the crowd started to wonder what Drew was doing. He then told everyone around him that he loves May and in two months, he will marry her. With that, everyone in the crowd started to gasp and all of the girls started to cry in knowing that he was no longer going to be single. As soon as everyone left the area, Misty ran up to May and Drew and yelled at Drew. “Drew, you have a lot of nerve leaving May like that. Just what is so damn important that you had to leave your pregnant fiancé for five weeks” she yelled out. Drew turned away from the girls and said that he just had some unfinished business to attend to. Misty then grabbed Drew’s hand before he could walk away and said, “Now you listen to me Drew. May has been living in hell for the last couple of weeks. And just recently, she had to stay in the hospital for three days. But no matter what, she still stayed optimistic and knew that one day you would come back to her. But here we find you in Johto JUST FOR SOME STUPID CONTEST!” Drew then yelled at Misty and told her to shut up. With that, Misty and May were shocked by the outburst and Drew ran away from them.
That night, Drew was sitting outside of the Pokemon Center looking up in the sky. In one of the rooms, May looked out her window and saw Drew and decided to go outside. Back outside, Drew felt a hand on his shoulder and it was May. “May honey, what are you doing up at this hour? You should get your rest” he said. May told him that she really couldn’t sleep and then asked Drew to tell her the truth into why he went away. Drew sighed and said, “Well, I really didn’t feel right telling you this. You see, one night I was watching some television and they mentioned that there were going to be contests in Johto. Now, I didn’t think much of going because my intention was to stay with you. But somehow, I got caught up in a little fight with Harley. I’m sorry May; I just couldn’t bear having him insult me to my face like that. I saw that my only chance to set things right was to head out to Johto and face Harley in one contest myself. Unfortunately, I’ve had some trouble finding him. He was somehow one step ahead of me. It wasn’t until about a couple of days ago when I found out what city he would be in. As soon as I defeat Harley in the contest, I vow to come back home…That is if you want me to come back.” May sighed and told Drew that she of course wants him back and she still wants to marry him in a couple of months. Drew smiled at the fact that May has forgiven him. He then apologized for the time that he was gone for and with just one look in her eyes, he promised that whether he won or lost tomorrow, he would come back and take care of May. May smiled and cuddled up next to Drew.
The next day, the stadium was filled to capacity to see the Pokemon Contest that was about to go down. While May and Misty were sitting up in the stands, Misty was grumbling about how Drew was acting. May then sighed and told her that Drew explained everything to her last night and she believes him. “Ha! What a load of crap! I’m sorry May it’s going to take me a while before I can believe your fiancé again. It just broke my heart to see you suffering like that” she said. May then smiled and thanked Misty for all of her care and support. Just then, Lillian came out on stage, getting the crowd all warmed up. It was now time for the appeals and all of the contestants pulled out all of the stops to try and get the highest score, Harley with his Cacturne, Drew with his Roselia, and Kelly with her Grumpig. After the appeals round, there was a ten minute break before the second round, so May and Misty made their way to see Drew. As soon as Drew saw the girls, he ran towards them. But when he saw Misty standing there with her arms crossed, he started to apologize to her for snapping yesterday. Even after the apology, Misty still stood there with a sour look. “Drew, even though it will take me a while for me to forgive you totally, May seems to have forgiven you for what you did. So, I guess I can let bygones be bygones, for now” she said.
As they smiled, Lillian came up on the screen and was about to announce the four coordinators that have made it to the second round. By luck, Kelly, Harley, and Drew made it to the second round. But with the random match-up, it matched up Harley and Drew together. With that, Harley walked up behind Drew. “Well Drew, looks like we will be going up against each other next. Getting nervous” he asked. Drew glared at him and said that he is ready for him. “Oh May…Hmm, maybe you should lay off the snacks” said Harley. As Harley left, Drew was just about ready to slug him for what he just said to May. May then grabbed Drew’s hand and told him that it wasn’t worth it. “Now just go out there and kick Harley’s ass” she said. As soon as the girls left the locker room, May held her stomach and went into the bathroom as fast as she could. Misty ran to see what was wrong and found out that something she ate just really upset her and was in the bathroom throwing up. “Damn it, I don’t want to miss Drew’s match” she yelled out while her face was in the toilet.
A couple of minutes later May and Misty left the bathroom and went to see how the battle was going. According to the screen, Harley had a slight lead and there was about one more minute to go with the battle. It was Drew’s Flygon versus Harley’s Wigglytuff. Luckily, Drew called out a Sandstorm attack and Wigglytuff got caught in the middle of the attack. Wigglytuff then overcame the attack and floated up to the top, but Flygon was right behind it. Drew then called out for a Seismic Toss attack. After the attack by Flygon, it was enough to knock out Wigglytuff. The judges then decided that Wigglytuff was unable to battle, declaring Drew and Flygon the winners of the battle. After the battle, the girls met up with Drew back in the locker room. “Oh Drew, I’m sorry I missed most of your battle. I just felt really sick and…” she said until she was interrupted by Drew. He told her that he completely understood and not to worry about it. As they embraced, Lillian came up on the screen announcing that Kelly won her battle and now was time for the final battle between Drew and Kelly. As Drew left the locker room, he got some encouraging pep talk from May and Misty. As he walked down the hall, everything became white all around.
Five minutes later, the battle was over and just by an inch, Kelly won the Blackthorn City contest. After the contest, Drew walked down the hallway, looking down. Just then, he heard his name being called and looked up to see May right in front of him. “Drew, even though you didn’t win the contest, you’re still a great coordinator and that doesn’t make you more or less of one” she said. As Drew smiled, DJ Mary came up right behind them.
DJ Mary: Hi are you Drew? I’m DJ Mary and well, I hate to bug you, but would it be good if I did an interview with you? (Drew flicks hair)
Drew: Yeah, sure.
DJ Mary: Great! Drew, you gave us one impressive battle back there and of course we haven’t seen you in action for over six months. Why did you decide to take a hiatus from the Pokemon Contests?
Drew: Well, I’ll tell you this. I decided to stop competing for the time being so I could be with my fiancé since she is expecting. But recently, I just felt that I needed to compete in one last contest before becoming a father. And even though I didn’t win this contest, I know it isn’t the end of the world. I’m just very happy that I got to compete in another contest. I’m sure that there will be other contests in the future. But for now, my choice is to take a hiatus away from the contest scene.
DJ Mary: Oh, and who is she?
Drew: This is my fiancé May. In a couple of months, we will be married and then welcome our new baby. I know I haven’t been the most faithful person within the last couple of weeks, but I want to make it up to her somehow. I want the whole world to know that I love this lady here, May.
After Drew said that, May began to cry and Drew put his arms around her. Kelly then came running down the hall. “May, there you are. I had to see how you were doing” she said. May wiped a tear from her eye and told Kelly that she couldn’t be any happier. Kelly then went to Drew and offered a handshake in a job well done. After the handshake, Kelly told him to take good care of May and Drew told her that he will. It was then that Drew put his arm around May and they walked out of the contest hall. At the door, Drew offered to carry her over the threshold. “Drew, please don’t do this” she said. But Drew said that he doesn’t mind doing it. It took Drew a little while, and a little extra muscle to pick up May and walking over the threshold. Once he brought May down, he hoped that he would never do that again. “What about for our honeymoon” said May. “Oh yeah, maybe we could do that after the baby is born” he said. May laughed and hugged him.
