From the look of pride on Theo’s face, he might as well have been the Pokémon’s father. “Armaldo!” he cried, full of delight.
Carrie filled the ensuing silence by putting her drinks canister away as noisily as possible. Armaldo’s eyes, jutting from either side of his face, blinked once.
“How was evolving?” Theo asked, still beaming.
The Pokémon stared into the distance, not looking at his trainer. The feathery flaps on his sides fluttered in the light breeze.
The smile on Theo’s face became more and more forced. “Are you still hurt? Do you want healing?”
No response.
His face fell. “Please,” he said desperately. “Please, Armaldo, don’t do this to me. I’ve wanted you to evolve all this time so you’d stop being like this. You can’t tell me it’s all been for nothing!” Theo gave an angry sigh. “No, of course you can’t. You can’t tell me anything.”
There was a long pause as Theo stared at the ground, during which Armaldo continued to gaze blankly ahead and Carrie began to feel increasingly awkward. This decidedly one-sided argument had nothing to do with her.
“Look, will you just look at me!” Theo suddenly exploded at his Pokémon, almost making Carrie jump. Obediently, Armaldo turned his head towards his trainer, oblivious to the ferocity of the outburst. Carrie wasn’t even being looked at directly, but she could see that his eyes were empty, as emotionless as they ever had been. The evolution hadn’t changed a thing.
Theo’s anger faded into dull resignation as he saw the state of his Pokémon. “Sorry,” he sighed. “I know it’s not your fault. It’s just… sometimes…” He raised the Poké Ball and pointed it towards Armaldo. “Sometimes I don’t know why I bother.” Without even a twitch, the creature dissolved into red light.
“Well, that went well,” said Carrie brightly after a pause.
“Don’t,” Theo snapped, glaring at her.
For once, she listened.
