I've been to quite a few shows over the last couple months. The bigger acts include Boris, Sleep, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Powerglove, and Protest the Hero. I had to pass on Turisas, Finntroll, and Ensiferum because of other stupid responsibilities. Will be seeing Children of Bodom, Devin Townsend, Kamelot, and Alestorm in the coming months. Mucho excited!
    long time no see

How where Blind Guardian? I saw them at bloodstock in 2009, I thought they where incredible.

Also, which album would you recommended I check out?
As was said, it's more sort of Judas Priest type metal, with a nod the a lot of the nwobhm era bands. Ratehr than just a hard rock band.

But I agree, get The Black Flame.

Just thought I'd poke in and post the artwork for Opeth's upcoming album. It's raised quite a few eyebrows.

I think I like it. It's certainly a very 'prog' sort of cover. Hopefully that's a sign of the direction they have gone in.

so this year in metal, i've seen a grindcore band live with a chick who i later found out used to be a dude and flashed her tits on stage, i found out Nightwish are actually big enough pretentious ****s to actually go through with that movie, and then now i see this.

i'm just more confused than anything by now.

Job for a Cowboy have released a new single. It sounds more polished and more technical than whatever they've composed before, and shockingly enough, it has an actual (and decent) solo. Ever since they've changed their style in Ruination, I had good feelings about them, though the album itself sounded kinda repetitive to me. I like so far the path they're taking.

The tentative date for the release of their new EP, Gloom, is 7th June.

Better they do something that reminds of Deep Purple's self-titled than Uriah Heep's.

And besides, you had doubts that Nightwish were that pretentious? Is this the same Chaotic Tyrant who usually posts here? Nightwish make Emerson, Lake & Palmer look understated, for ****'s sake.

Heard it (the EP) on metalsucks, and it sucks. Think a way more generic TBDM.

Cretin, right? Are they any good?

This is news to me, actually. I never thought of them as being that pretentious tbh.

Yeah, I don't get it. Really fucking hoping it's a joke, but in the end it doesn't matter, it's Opeth so the music will still be amazing.

    yep.

they were pretty okay, i didn't love them but they had a really Exhumed-esque sound (several of the members being from the band i think) and referenced them as well as playing a cover. i like Exhumed but they kinda were getting old by the end.

you probably already know them, but i'd much more readily recommend Terrorizer, Carcass, Assuck, and Nasum as far as grind goes. especially the first three.

i hate the Agonist, Kamelot never appealed to me and when i saw Blackguard live the last time with Nevermore they were okay and seemed like fun dudes but really sloppy.
Blackguard opened for Symphony X and they were actually pretty good. They had a great stage presence and definitely get props for having a cute little chick drummer who's heavy as ****.

Sup dog. Blind Guardian were fantastic. Everyone was chanting for Majesty for the encore and after a lot of awkward standing around, Hansi said they'd give it a shot but would have to skip Mirror Mirror, but ended up playing both. Last time I saw them in '07 Hansi immediately shut down the Majesty chants. As a side note, in '07 they sold out the venue I went to and it was a standard group of friendly metal fans, but this last time it was sold out at the same place and there were so many dirtbags that someone could've convinced me that I accidently went to a Job for a Cowboy show. It was really one of those times that the crowd was so shitty that they almost ruined the event for me.

The coolest part of all the shows I went to was Symphony X playing an impromptu Odyssey. It was so sloppy, everyone was messing up left and right and forgetting parts, but them pulling that 25 minute epic out of their asses shows real dedication.

Unless I'm missing something the EP doesn't come out until June 7th. I've heard from a few people that the single sounds like Black Dahlia Murder, although I can't see how. The solo might come as close as sounding like TBDM, but then again a solo like that melodic is pretty common. Still it's nice to see that they've long abandoned the core sound.

Also, I'd take good -core over boring death metal any day.

Ok, I'll give it a listen when I get time later.

And nothing is more boring than when songs are composed around breakdowns, bro.

people who act like old school death metal bands didn't use breakdowns are worse than the bands who abuse them.
not calling you out specifically, just saying.

also Converge is better than all the generic wank tech death that you seem to listen to anyway.
