Yeah Paul's kinda heartless. Ash cares about his Pokémon's feelings more than he does his battling which must be alot since he's so good heheh. Chimchar was just torn to pieces when Paul released him but Ash picked his feelings up by 'adopting' him partly out of pity

I think Ash adopted Chimchar knowing just how badly Paul treated it. In the flash back in Tears For Fears after Paul let Chimchar go the poor thing said "don't go."

When Chimchar went on its rampage in Chim-Charred it was pretty obvious, from the screen shots, just who Chimchar's rage was directed at. I'm pretty sure that if Ash hadn't tried to calm Chimchar down the poor thing would have killed itself and Paul.

Ash knows how to be one with his pokemon. It's pretty obvious that he doesn't care about just battling his pokemon alone. Ash also cares about his pokemon's emotional well being as well. I don't think Ash would have taken Chimchar on if he didn't care about its well being. Ash cares about bringing out the very best in his Pokemon.

And no matter what Paul might think of Ash's methods of training his pokemon he keeps on trying new things that he thinks might bring out the very best in his pokemon.

It's called character development. The writers are expanding upon Chimchar and Gligar's characters in this episode. There was certainly a lot more meaning to this episode than you may think. And, personally, I felt that it was probably the one of the best written episodes I've watched in a while.

Loved the dub. Based on all the talk about how Ash was able to get Chimchar to use blaze but Paul wasn't makes me believe Chimchar will no longer have any trouble using blaze when he really needs it..actually..we can't really judge because we don't see it in any major battles from this point until DP99, except against a certain gym leader who puts it to sleep. Anyway, I was initially worried that Chimchar wouldn't evolve because the writers would develop it by learning to use blaze rather than evolving it, since Chimchar can now use blaze that doesn't seem to be the case; this and 2 other things(that would be too "spoiler-ish" to post here) make me believe Chimchar will evolve all the way to Infernape. All fully evolved pokemon seem to have some sort of problem they must overcome, Charizard's disobidience, Sceptile not being able to attack. Infernape's little issue to overcome can be controlling blaze


Another thing about this episode caught my attention. Ash mentions that he and Paul share the same goal, to win the Sinnoh League and go on to defeat the champion, Cynthia. Seems like Ash has a new goal, he's never mentioned battling the champion of any of the other regions. This can be more foreshadowing towards an Elite 4 arc after Sinnoh

freakn loved this episode! both ash and paul showed some real depth in their beliefs as trainers. And i love how the writers are fully into showcasing chimmys development, man i really hope it'll evolve all the way. And Gligar was so damn cute! Top episode

A few points I never got to for this episode. Nice to see a Knock Off attack as well as Hammer Arm. As usual, Paul is his old arsey self. It was cool that Chimchar destroyed Ursaring.

This would have been the perfect time to evolve Chimchar. But alas it was another wasted opportunity.

On the bright side, at least this was one of the first episodes where I really started to like Ash's Gligar...even though he treats it like crap.

Cool ep, it really shows how Ash's Gligar is different from a lot of other Gligar. I really like the backstory with Chimchar, hopefully something comes out of it.

About time we see Guillotine in action again, although it has been used at least once before, in the Hoenn league if I'm not mistaken. Oddly enough, it didn't have its OHKO traits back then, I clearly remember Morreson's Gligar not KOing something when it hit it.

Does anyone know the name of the song that plays when Gligar is battling Gliscor in this ep? I've been searching for it forever. It's the anime remix of the R/S/E Magma/Aqua grunt battle music.

To me, Paul throughout most of this episode was just plain rude to Ash. After Ash risked his own neck to break Chimchar out of it's beserk mode, Paul didn't sound quite as rude for a moment there. I'm thinking that Paul is testing to see how good of a trainer Ash really is. In the Dub, Paul said that they'll battle again when Ash has Chimchar's power under control. What do you guys think?

WOW, an episode without precedent! Just overwhelming!

First of all, I want to spare myself a comment on Gligar, because I still haven't been able to get to like it yet. It's a clown and makes Ash and his Pokemon look ridiculous. Its appearance wouldn't have been necessary today, but let's move on to the actual plot:

This dialog between Ash and Paul was awesome, because there were so many surprising and good arguments in it:
Although I'm a passionate Ash-Fan, I have to admit that Paul was right at the beginning: By just wanting to improve his Pokemon's battling skills, Ash did the same at the Wallace Cup which he reproached Paul for at the Tag Battle before. You could see from the expression on Ash's face that he reluctantly had to admit Paul was right here. But then, he countered excellently:
What he said there about making his Pokemon stronger by trusting and loving them, was one of Ash's most mature and profound remarks I've heard so far. Awesome, great, and fantastic!

The next great scene was, of course, the wonderful Cynthia- flashback *siiighs* But beloved princess!:crush:
One important question: I've been wondering whether that was her original voice from "Top- Down Training" ??
I even watched this episode again in order to compare her two allegedly identical voices.
Well, although I've reached the conclusion that it must have been her original voice actress, I still think that she sounded a bit different today Where are our VA experts here? ^^ Could you please enlighten me?

And now the highlight, Chimchar vs. Ursaring:
As I've already said before, it was a battle without precedent: Definitely, this was the most brutal, creepiest, and fiercest battles but also one of the most impressive ones ever. Wasn't that just awesome?
There are so many elements which I could enumerate:
Chimchar being paralyzed by the horrible, terrifying expression on Ursaring's face, or Ursaring headbutting the poor ape and ramming it into the ground or, of course, Chimchar freaking out and OHKOing it with one powerful Flame Wheel.
And don't forget Ash's heroic effort to calm his friend down! His enormous "It's oooover!" cry was both moving and impressive.

What also pleased me a lot, was Paul's reaction: Have you realized this!? Those were the first "friendly" words Paul spoke to Ash since they first met.
He said: "Do you think, you'll be able to handle that?" But he didn't say that in his usual, derogatory way, but with an hidden undertone of admiration for Ash and Chimchar! The way he said that as well as his proposal for a rematch nearly made me jump for joy!


Once again, a fantastic and impressive episode:
A terrific and great Pokemon-Battle and Ash showing why he justifiably is our hero!

[SOS! Its Not Healthy..]

I so loved this episode, this is the 2nd time to me that the dub was better than the Japanese version. MAybe I liked it better since now I have a better understanding. At certain cases, it almost felt like Ash just want to be the crap out of Paul, he just really want to.

And I was impressed of the performance when Chimchar was gonna crazy. The VAs really stepped up today, and it didn't feel scripted much which was good. And I loved how Ash yelled its Over, OVER. That was an awesome line.

I hope Chimchar evolves all the way to Infernape, I really want to see the development that goes there, and I wonder they could resolve Chimchar's fear and could control Blaze.

I loved this episode. I agree Ash sounded like he wanted to just smack Paul sometimes and I agree. I also felt sorry for Gilgar when it started crying and also Chimchar as well espically when it started going crazy then when it bit Ash.
The bit when Ashs pokemon started cheering as well was good as well I liked that bit and when James says Chimmy that makes me laugh as well.

Yeah, it is hard to like a Pokémon who is a weakling.
the weak and funny pokémon should be released. only the strong pokemon should be kept.
Like you, I hated Corphish for its unevolved funny antics.
And Gligar is a DISGRACE. God forbid a Pokémon that isn´t strong from the get go.

I raelly enjoyed the episode! It was pretty well done, and I still hate Paul for everything he said BTW.

Also refreshing to see Chimchar in the spotlight, trying to control its power!

It was awesome! Poor Chimchar... or rather poor Ash. Big. Gigantic. Bite. On. Shoulder. *Ouch!* Anyway, I agree with ash_forever.

Gligar almost got to attack Gliscor with Steel Wing, but Gliscor's OHKO Guillotine whacked it. Ursaring vs. Chimchar - Chimchar almost lost, but due to determination, he activated Blaze and defeated Ursaring using a Flame Wheel. And couldn't control it, and nearly (yes, I said nearly) fried Paul. Paul dodged though. *Phew*... Then Ash got bitten, then hugged Chimchar, then back to normal. Great episode!

9/10 if you'd ask me!

8/10 We got Paul, Gliscor, and Ursaring, can't forget who just Chimchar'd all butts. Scariest battle if I ever saw one. However a freakin' sweet Halloween episode.
