Default New Visitor Messages Guide + Rules

The VM system is a nifty feature that enables you to talk one-on-one with other SPPF users. It is rather self-explanatory, However, there are still the occasional questions about VMs. This guide was created in order to help you understand how to use the VM system, and how to properly report a message that may be problematic or inappropriate. Along with the creation of this VM guide, many new rules, protocols, and etiquette will be discussed. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE AWARE OF THESE! Many of the rules that have been added (albeit not really new) and will now be strictly enforced. These were created in order for a safe and appropriate community for every age group that uses these forums. Anybody is found breaking these will be warned or infracted. Multiple offenses may (and probably will) result in a ban.

    HOW TO USE THE SYSTEM
Note: Some of the images are slightly old as they were done before forum updates, but they should be similar enough that you can see what you are doing.

Everyone's profile will look something like this:

To post a message on someone's profile, you can type in the little box like so:

and when you hit post, the person's profile will now look like this:

You can tell when someone has posted on your profile through the notification system. When you have a new message, a notification will be sent to you like so:

Note that there is a different way to reply to someone. Circled here is the View Conversation link:

When you click this, you will be able to see your entire messaging history with that person:

You can then reply in a similar manner to posting directly on their profile. Please note the report button next to the View Conversation link. Take care to only press that when you actually want to report something; it sends a report email to the entire staff, so it does get a bit annoying when people press that button and send us a random message instead of a report. If someone is breaking the rules, though, do not hesitate to use that button and/or pm a staff member about it.

    VM MODERATION

One unique thing about the visitor messaging system is that every user has limited moderation abilities over their own profile. First off, you can set your VM page to friends/moderators only, which means that only people who are in your friends list or are moderators can see your page and post VMs to your profile. This can be done in your Settings. In addition, you can soft-delete messages on your own profile. This means that if something is mildly annoying to you but does not break one of the VM rules (posted below), you can soft-delete it so you don't have to look at it. However, please keep the following in mind:

-Do not delete any VMs to try to hide evidence of you/someone else breaking the rules. It won't work because mods can see deleted VMs (and undelete them), so we will find it anyway, and you may be punished more harshly for trying to hide things.

-Do not delete any VMs that were posted on your profile by a moderator. If we posted it there, it was there for a reason, and as said, we can undelete it anyway.

-You may delete extremely offensive messages and THEN tell a mod after if you wish. If someone posts porn or an extremely rude message on your profile you shouldn't have to look at it until a mod can get to it, and as said, we can still see the message when you "delete" it. Bear in mind that you won't have access to the report button on that message after you delete it, so you should either use the report button then delete, or delete and then PM a specific mod or 2 to take care of it.

    VM RULES
First and foremost, BE APPROPRIATE. There are children on this forum. This means no questionable RPing, conversations, or image macros/images. Your VMs are public to the entire staff so we can see any inappropriate content.

No spamming/flooding messages on other member’s profiles. This also goes for unsolicited messages.

There is zero tolerance for bullying or harassing other members, regardless of the situation. If a problem arises with another user, PM a moderator. If you get scammed, do not flood the other user’s wall with crude, and harassing language. Use the blacklist thread, and a moderator will mediate the situation.

Don’t be annoying. If a member doesn’t message you back right away, don’t spam them with “OMG WHY AREN’T YOU RESPONDING TO ME??”. That’s super obnoxious, and it won’t get you anywhere.

VMs are to be used to talk back and forth between you and another user. Misusing the system to spam, get around moderator decisions, or otherwise try to find loopholes will not be tolerated.

More may be added as needed. Feel free to PM a staff member if you have any questions about the rules or the system. You may also post here, but please only post constructive replies; no spamming.

Little Miss Stalinist/Secret Al-Qaeda agents (i.e. Ellie) would be a ***** even if she was a conserative republican. What makes her the way she is happens to be the fact that the webmaster of this site let's her behave like this. (Of course, I would never make a liberal a staff member at any forum I'd be in charge of, regardless.)

I have to agree here. I've had this happen to me and it's like ok, how am I supposed to reply to you if you have all forms of communication turned off.??

that will not be a rule because mods sometimes post things on users' profiles for moderation reasons and most of us have our visitor messaging turned off for non-friends (for obvious reasons). i also don't think it would be fair to potentially infract someone for saying something nice on another user's profile just because theirs was private. if it bothers you that much you can pm them or just turn yours to private so anyone who posts on yours has to be on your friends list anyway.

i also added some stuff about vm moderation that was supposed to be there in the first place but i forgot

Define flooding a person's page with VMs. Because at times I do get into rather quick moving conversations with members.

I think they mean without someones response. For instance if you post like ten messages at once without even getting a reply from the user. It could be seen as spamming since you can edit your post.

    flooding would be something like:

    user1: hi

    user2: hello

    user2: how are you

user2: i am playing mario kart

user2: i just got hit by a red shell

user2: now i won the race yay

user1: could you stop replying so much

user2: i am playing another race

user2: i got hit by lightning

    user2: some jerk passed me

    user2: now i lost wahh

basically if you reply a bunch of times in a row in a short period of time without the other user replying back. this is a bit of a grey area but we will be more likely to infract if the user being flooded has asked the flooder to stop and then tells us someone is flooding their VMs when they don't. so if someone asks you to please not do something on their page, you should respect that.

Um, alright so with these new rules in effect, I have this friend of mine and we both literally love to insult each other and say random stupid stuffs and also kinda flood up the VMs. Now I can see that they are against the rules. Would we still get infraction or warnings or whatever it is that you;ll do about it if neither of us has a problem? It's kinda better to be safer!!

As long as they're not rude to others/inappropriate for others to see, and neither of you report it, it'd be fine. But flooding multiple messages at a time before waiting for a reply may be risky as someone else could report that and a mod may act on that, so consider limiting that aspect.

Would asking if someone missed their VM also fall under this category? I mean, there are times people miss VMs.

It depends how soon you reply/how you reply. Asking calmly after a day or so if you see they've logged in since is fine, yelling in capslock as Ellie did in the example is not.

yeah and to add on, i would only ask once after a long period of time and stop asking after that. yes, people sometimes miss it, but if they don't reply after a second one they probably don't want to talk to you and asking multiple times is harassment. note that i don't mean you specifically, i mean in general for anyone reading this.

as for the insults, it will still be infractable if it is potentially offensive to people not involved, such as breaking the censor, using slurs, describing triggering scenarios, etc. if there's no possible way for it to be offensive to people who are not involved then i don't care what insults you use as long as both are ok with it.

Well, "triggering scenarios" is extremely vague, and people can be offended by almost anything. Are there any more specific guidelines or do we have to walk on eggshells with every VM...?

While this list definitely does not cover everything that could be a trigger, it should give you an idea of what we are looking at. Walking on eggshells is a bit dramatic but I usually follow the philosophy that if you have to wonder if something is okay, it probably isn't. There are plenty of other ways to talk to someone if you absolutely must be offensive that aren't visible by most of our users.
