That had to be one of the sadest episodes of Pokemon ever. I nearly cried, I wanted Butterfree to come back.

I agree. It was really sad, because Butterfree was the first Pokemon Ash catched.

This is one of the better episodes of the entire series. It displays the mating habits of the Butterfree, which Ash's decides to pick a pink one to couple with. So, after many events happen, Butterfree leaves its trainer to pursue a life of happiness with its partner. Tears actually flowed down my cheek as I watched this. It was just so touching when Ash released his first Pokemon. Releasing a Pokemon really is a big event in a [good] trainer's life and I liked how the writers handled the episode.

Everytime I see this episode, I nearly cry, especially at the part where Ash is on the cliff watching Butterfree fly away. I hate it when Ash releases one of his Pokemon.

Most of us who have been watching the show since we were little know that this is a old school classic episode.

I cried too. Very dramatic and emotional, I want more old school. That was the first shiny Pokemon, wasn't it? I mean the pink Butterfree.

THE PINK BUTTERFREE IS NOT A SHINY, THEY WEREN"T INVENTED BY THEN.

Thank you, common misconception. The first "real" Shiny was Noctowl.

When I was a kid, I watched this episode and I cried, because Butterfree was one of my favorites! It is the saddest episode of the entire series, but in a good way. The flashback where Ash remembers all the good times with his first capture is heartbreaking, as is his heartfelt goodbye to Butterfree. I hope Butterfree comes back someday, if only for a cameo like Lapras did.

This is the only episode that makes me melt like cold butter...
The background musics are kinda rare and calming, especially during the scenes where they started riding the hot-air balloon.
Also the saddest episode ever, "Pikachu's Goodbye" only goes second...
...although there are scenes that are funny, like when Misty "suggested" to Brock to write an autobiography, *giggle*...or when Team Rocket are being pursued by a spinning Starmie like MADNESS.
It's too bad those Butterfrees died, R.I.P.
...they're on a better place now...

I watched this episode the other day and it's both happy and sad. It's sad that butterfree had to leave (I admit, i nearly cried) but it was a happy ending that the pink butterfree and Ash's butterfree were happy and together ^_^

This is definatley one of my favorite episode.

This 21'st episode in the series has the tone of a series finale-sort of. Think about: there's an emotional ending, Team Rocket(TR) does a good job at being menacing to society, and suffer a rather grim, fitting defeat in the end. Note that they fall into a canyon, and how Ash and Misty basically say, "that'll teach 'em". And we hear lines that reference the history of the show. About how the twerps are always on TR's trail, about how TR was so close this time, and of course, a montage to cap on Ash and Butterfree's career together. What if they had stopped the series right there? Would you be satisfied with Ash's character arc? He did learn about sacrifice in this, after all.
But still, I love this episode, ever since I first watched it. So much in fact, that it's been in my iTunes library as a video.

I cried again seeing this it's sad to see Butterfree go, I thin he made an excellent addition to Ashes team and would've loved to see more of him. I got a laugh out of the Gang using a modified version of the TR motto, that was fun to see along with TR freaking out as Pikachu zapped them. It's to bad the production staff forgot about Butterfree completely since it would've been nice to see how Butterfree is doing and maybe join up with Ash again. Well now Ash is down to 5 Pokemon on his team.

I find it funny that Ash had Butterfree for a few months and releasing it was a lot more emotional than when Misty released Togepi and she had it for about six years
