Misty should have gotten it, deal.
What purpose dos it serve currently rotting at Oaks lab?
Ash's Johto team was handled horribly. Everyone wanted Cyndaquil and Totodile to evolve in Johto, where have you been the last 10 years?
There's a reason why Bulbasaur/Squirtle/Charizard came back so much and the Johto team was treated like throwaway crap in comparison. Ash's Hoenn got tremendous amount of screentime and most likely his DP Pokemon will make a comeback as well.
team is the worst team of the series are not ,since it is only opinions not facts, the Johto did had some good focus and sreentime ,and they weren't treated like crap either.
The reason why the writers brought back Bulbasaur/Squirtle/Charizard was due to them being Ash's first original starters,Ash even used them over his Hoenn team pretty much says a lot,as for the DP Team they are not coming back anytime soon but only the writers know that.
This episode was so funny and a true classic.
This episode was great - Misty and Ash both got something out of this episode. Ash got a new Pokémon and Misty's Poliwag evolved in Poliwhirl.
I actually agree that bringing Ash's Kanto Pokémon to Johto was a hit and miss simultaneously. Yes, it was awesome to see some extra action of the awesome team Ash build during Kanto, but it also made screening time for Ash's Johto Pokémon much less that comparing it to other regions like Hoenn and Sinnoh. In the end, I think it was good for Ash having Totodile - considering the fact Ash's Squirtle went back to the Squirtle Squad and was thus without any water-type Pokémon + Misty captured a Corsela later on in the series. With those two thing in mind, it was fair to give Ash Totodile for his time in Johto. Whether it was more useful if Misty got Totodile for her gym matches than instead staying at Oak's ranch is debatable in my opinion.
Anyway, that is my take on it lol.
It was really cute the way Ash and Misty fought over the Totodile. It showed that they cared for one another.
As for Totodile itself, I liked its energetic personality over the years. If only Ash had named it "Spurrier" after a certain football coach.

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
*Stomps on the ground angrily like Burgundy* Why why why why why? Staryu could have won. But, I guess since Staryu's record is better than Chikorita's it had to happen.
Totodile winks, Misty swoons.
A strong spirit transcends rules.
Did anyone else feel at least a little bad for that poor Totodile?
Imagine: You're innocently dancing around the water like the weirdo you are just like everyday when these two creeps that can't stop screaming at each other start following you around and one of them ends up catching you. Not only that, they don't know which of them caught you so they have to go and battle over you.
I honestly think/hope it was Misty's Poke'ball that caught it. xDD
Too bad that Waninoko eventually went to Satoshi and he received the least development. I love the interaction between Satoshi and Kasumi for Waninoko. But it should be Kasumi to win the battle and if that happens then Waninoko probably receives a better development.
Misty already has enough water Pokemon, so she didn't need Totodile.
Plus, she got a Poliwhirl out of the battle, so that's fair enough.
I'm loving this Totodile's personality.
My top favorites
Claimed by me!
"If you fail to plan, you plan to fail" - Sgt. Greg Parker, SRU
I originally wanted Misty to catch Totodile here since I wasn't a fan of the idea of Ash having three Johto Starters, but I guess it was for the best tbh. I'm glad that Misty took initiative, although I was never a big fan of Poliwhirl as a species, so seeing Misty's cute little Poliwag evolve into Poliwhirl here made me a bit sad.
So i randomly run across this episode at my friends house watching it. Decided to join in and refresh my memory; definitely didn't regret it.
This episode is one of reasons why Misty is still my favorite female protagonist from pokemon.
It was really cool seeing her be so passionate and determined to catch Totodile accusing Ash of dirty tricks. Brimming with feisty, brash and fangirly nature while trying to remain selfpoised.
Battle was one of better ones. Maybe not so much in diversity of attacks and detailed strategy. But whole tension going between her and Ash, lot of funny comments and ways to outsmart opponent(like sending Togepi to battle Pikachu)made this clash truly memorable.
Battle which i think Misty had really good chance of winning when Poliwag evolved bringing Bulbasaur on ropes.
In end i feel Totodile would have been better of with Misty in longer run. Who as water specialist has wider knowledge and experience in training water pokemon. Especially when her Poliwhirl and Corsola not counting TR had more success than Totodile had in Johto. Even in TR battles im not sure if Totodile was used much to begin with by Ash.
Along with Totodile at Cerulean gym having chance to be frequntly used and improve himself possibly evolving, unlike its case now rotting at Oak ranch.
Or in case of traveling in future entering tournaments, training under water experts like Siebold, Lorelei, Kyle or Wallace to become water master gaining more as water pokemon that way.
Either way this was fantastic episode reinforcing on my belief why i felt Ash had out of all female companions most spontaneous, enjoyable and full of playful conflict of beliefs dynamic with Misty.
It also showed how friendship between those two definitely matured since Kanto. When Misty by end of episode commented how she and Ash are above everything friends for very long time and shouldnt let envy and jealousy stand in their way when he got Totodile instead.
Yet some say Misty apparently "had no memorable moments and personality in Johto" despite episodes telling otherwise.
I really think that this is funny about Misty speech about being a great water Pokemon trainer when the writters didn't make her catch anything until season 5. And also it feel like a lie that Misty is that great when she doesn't know how to take care of a baby Marril that much. I feel Totodile was trolling Misty because it didn't want to be with her. I saw it wanting to battle Pikachu I think. Also calling Ash a low down dirty cheater was wrong because he did everything right of weakening Totodile and thowning a Poke Ball at it. She was more of cheat using Togetpi against Pikachu.
Misty was so annoying in this episode and I want to punch her in that big ego of hers.
Team Rocket is a little bit weird in this episode, but I guess it funny a bit?
Ash Lure ball hit Totodile first. Because Ash throw was second and I saw the second Lure Ball hit Totodile so really it did belong to Ash and not Misty.
Really I don't think that Misty needed Totodile because she gets a Poilwhirl out the deal. And with out Ash's Totodile something about his journey thought Johto would been bad. With out Ash's Totodile he wouldn't have beat Whitiny Milktank, Ash would have been short handed with his battle with Macey and Totodile defeat Harrison Snezel. With Misty it would have been battle only Team Rocket and maybe used in the Whirl Cup and that mostly it.
Also Pokemon 123 do you remember that Ash's Pokemon sometimes learn new moves when they are at proffesor oak lab. Hercross learn Mega Horn, Snorlax learned Ice Punch, Muk knowing Sludge Bomb, Tarous knowing Horn Attack. So it not rotting away.
So I have to give this episode 6.5/10
Developing close frendship and becoming more perceptive of water pokemon feelings, needs and striong/weak sides.
Being steps forward in becoming water master.
I dont see anything cheating in using Togepi vs Pikachu either. If anything Misty showed to be cunning and intelligent knowing how to effectively neutralize Ash best tool against water pokemon.
Enjoying in bickering, rivalry and bragging going on between her and Ash having great chemistry. Acting maturely in end like real sportsman and showing how strong friends they become.
I wathed this episode several times and both Misty and Ash throwed lureball at same time, hitting Totodile in exact same moment. With outcome of which ball caught Totodile being hidden by bushes.Ash Lure ball hit Totodile first. Because Ash throw was second and I saw the second Lure Ball hit Totodile so really it did belong to Ash and not Misty.
So theres no real way to tell who was faster. But whaz i do know is how Misty came with idea to use special lure ball to catch Totpdile with Ash copying her plan.
With Ash aside from TR, Totodile was used only in one gym battle vs Whitney losing both times. Against Sneasel, Dorian losing again and Macy Electabuzz/Slugma losing without scoring any win.Really I don't think that Misty needed Totodile because she gets a Poilwhirl out the deal.
Pretty bad record (actually its terrible).
Under Misty custody aside from Rocket battles, Whirl Cup or Coastline gym when battling Dorian, we could had seen it used in Seaking competition, Against wild pokemon like Sneasel and Macargo.
Against Sakura and her Eevee(Espeon or in batling one of her sisters who had Vaporeon instead of Poliwhirl).
Other trainers like Marcellus and his Octillery or Delaney and Poliwrah.
Which is higher nuber of options to be used and gain battling experience than it was showed to be with Ash.
And thats not even counting pokemon chronicles and Misty solo adventures.
Both Misty Poliwhirl and especially Corsola had much better battle record. For example Corsola lost in Johto only vs Marcellus and rinity Chinchau., But won against trainer with Seaking, Harrison and his Quilfish or Trinity Gyarados in Whirl Cup. Defeated Sakura Espeon, Dorian Mantine and won Alto Mare race with Misty.
Under Misty as aspiring water master, passionate lover of water pokemon, ocean and everything which comes from it. Posessing better understanding of water specie, more knowledge and skill in using them productively., Always being ahead of Ash in any water related event(Seaking event, Whirl Cup, underwater battle at Coastline gym, Alto mare race proved) .
Gives me impression she would have better success in raising it in powerful pokemon than Ash had.
Learning one or two attacks once in a blue moon which comes out of nowhere with no training involved.
Pokemon dont train themselves alone.
Never being used by Ash, never being worked on incresing Totodile strength, speed or enriching on its moves is called wasting time.
With Totodile not gaining any experience or challenges to overcome this way.
Hence why i said hes rotting at Oaks lab standing by my initial opinion.
At Cerulean gym or in case Misty travels from time to time to catch new pokemon, enter new tournaments advancing her dream etc Totodile chances of battling, being trained and becoming more versatile with its abilities would be much higher, as well option of evolving all the way to Feraligator,
But what hapčenef it happened,m no point in sobbing over spoiled milk.
P.S. Normally i wouldn't reply, but since most of your post was obviously addressed toward me being mentioned.
I felt obligation to comment on your criticism and elaborate on points i left in previous message about this episode. Which seemed to be questioned.
Although im not sure why this happened with m,ore than 6 months delay.
