What makes Trapinch a tier'd pokemon?

    in other words, why NU?

And, adding to that, what makes Hippopotas a NU pokemon?

Is it the use of Sandstorm teams that make these two NU?

Trapinch has different abilities and typing than Flygon. It still maintains that 100 base attack and is used for different reasons than the rest of it's line. I'm pretty sure you trap and kill walls with Trapinch.

Trapinch, like Vigoroth, Clamperl, and Pikachu, have something that sets them apart from their evolutions.

Hippopotas and Snover are prevolutions of pokemon that are not allowed in UU- hence, they become NU instead.
EDIT-Forgot Magneton, which is slightly faster than Zone and outspeeds some important things.

    I don't play 4th Gen or 5th Gen.

My Youtube Channel. Feel tired of 5th Gen, with Stealth Rock, Eviolite, Choice Scarf, and priority everywhere? Come check out some good old ADV OU, where you can waste your time watching battles that go on for more than 50 turns.

Pokémon X is in Tier X because Smogon said so.

Yes, if all of you, in your thousands, when on Smogon's shoddy sever, and use Illumise constantly for the rest of the month, it'd probably be OU.

However, that just means you can't use it in UU and NU, when it can actually do something. Personally, if I were an Illumise fan, I'd want it to be in the lowest tier possible, so I can use it to greater effect.

I'm pretty sure the tiers are arranged by actual usage. Overused is exactly what its name suggests: the most used Pokemon on Shoddy. Look at the Smogon forum for a list of statistics for each month.

to be honest its OU because smogon says so, and well if you want to talk to them about lowering it go ahead, just expect to be bombarded by players saying the same as us. anyway its ou because as a lead it doesnt have to set up upon by just baton passing 1 speed boost after a protect, so yeah dont complain, and about the whole roar thing well if they use roar after 1 speedboost baton pass its just back at point "A" with just a new pokemon upfront

    Ninjask looks pretty cool.

    What more does one need?

^ Note that I forgot Burungeru as well as the three stache-cloud-thingies from B/W. Will add them some day.

Along with Scyther and Porygon2 IIRC.

Trapinch has the really deadly Arena Trap, and since it has a usable Attack stat, it can actually get a revenge kill in.

    Vigoroth doesn't have Truant.

Clamperl can be equipped of the Deepseascale or Deepseatooth.

Magneton, as meteor64 said, can outspeed things.

    Pikachu has the Light Ball.

Scyther has higher speed than Scizor.

Porygon2 is bulkier than PorgyonZ IIRC, and has Trace.

And yeah, Snover and Hippopotas are the only way to induce instant weather in NU.

Also an honerable mention to Wynaut, the only NFE to ever hit Ubers.

Legend of Zelda: Hoenn Adventures is currently dead.

I believe the tiering is based on several factors

    - Moveset
    - Viability for making up weaknesses
    - Stats
    - Counters
    - Versatility

    There's also:
    - Usage
    - Typing
    - Uniqueness
    - Role

    I guess. x_x

    @the ninjask argument
umm ninjask is amazing and it is made even more so by the addition of focus sash. unless your opponent sends out a person that causes damaging weather, which btw is like...three pokemon not counting preevolutions (Abomasnow/Hippowdon/Tyranitar) then you pretty much automatically survive one attack so you can pass a swords dance and one speed boost. oh and if somebody happens to burn/poison you as a side-effect...well then your screwed as well. otherwise a great baton passer. imo, one of the best, simply because of ability and starting speed.
    bored.

The tiers are set up by usage, as one of the previous posters said. They are mostly decided on: movepool, types/weaknesses and of course base stats. Pokemon like Tyranitar are in the OU category because of their killer stats and move pool; Pokemon like Sunflora are in the NU due to the mostly lackluster stats, type and movepool. Not that many grass types are in the OU anyway.

Ubers are set aside since they are too powerful for normal game play. Almost all the good legendaries are in the Uber category, self explanatory, no? Wobbuffet is there because of its moveset and ability Shadow Tag, which makes it une force majeure whereever it goes. High HP + Great moves + Ability = Uber. Same reason why Slaking isn't an Uber nor even in UU: its ability makes it really, really weak.

Now like said above, why Ninjask? Copypasted from Smogon:

This is what Ninjask was used for in Advance, and it has changed little. Substitute repeatedly until you've built up enough Speed Boosts, then get the hell out of there. Swords Dance can be used if you've got the time to make something like Marowak or Rampardos even more scary. X-Scissor beats up Psychics so you can use Ninjask to prevent Alakazam or Azelf from sweeping your team, and if you manage to scrape a Swords Dance you can OHKO Tyranitar. Aerial Ace is great for Heracross, which these EVs allow you to outspeed even if he has max Speed and Choice Scarf (though not Jolly natured ones)."
Because of its Speed Boost, it can make huge slow hitters super fast, and it can kill Heracross and most fighters pretty easily. Even Tyranitar *quotes above*

    So that's why it's OU, I guess.

Well, technically speaking, Pokemon X cannot be in Tier X because the X values are teh same, hence meaning a pokemon would be in its own tier - eg. Mareep would be in "Tier Mareep". Hahaha.

But the Base Stats and Movepool make a big difference.

Just for those who don't know, ther tier lists are getting redone sometime in the next week or two. I expect to be seeing Dugtrio become UU. Porygon 2 and Umbreon may become OU. Cloyster and Torterra will probably move up from NU to UU. Rhydon might move up to UU aswell.

These are just predictions, but I think some of them are likely to happen.

I thought in Smogon the classified Rhydon and Porygon 2 as NFE.

NFE is no tier. All NFE Pokémon are classified in tiers the same way as fully evolved Pokémon.

Legend of Zelda: Hoenn Adventures is currently dead.

I doubt Porygon 2 will be upped, but Torterra will be bumped...

And as everyone else has said, don't be blasting Ninjask-a good swords dancer for sure!!!

I don't think that Porygon 2 should be classified as NFE, since it is pretty good by itself. Rhydon also, but I guess it could fit too.

Gardevoir should be bumped from UU to Borderline, since it has 125 Sp. Atk and can easily outspeed a Porygon-2 or use a Shadow Ball to KO an Alakazam. But that's soleument moi, non?

I don't really see how Arcanine is classified as UnderUsed. I saw a lot of them on PBR Wi-Fi last month. I'm seeing a few Quagsire and Charizard on Wi-Fi as well, and I can't remember the last time I ran into a Blissey.
