Default Skaisdead and a Sprite Thread

This is my first formal sprite thread, so bear with me. All of my sprites are 100% scratch, including my devamps. All of the colors have been extracted from existing official sprites. I plan on adding a lot more, and possibly an entire Fakedex eventually. The images are GIF. I didn't realize that they weren't saving as PNG.

Trainers I've sketched up. They are based off of the Skank (Ska) style.

They don't have names yet, so let's call them Tyler and Jill.

EDIT 10/22: A few Pokemon were modified slightly. Scaraby and Heracross added.

These are actually pretty good. You should use less dithering though. Ingenii and Pykra are extremly over-dithered.

My only complaint about Learen, is that his black stripes have no shading. Use a dark grey or lightened black to make the highlights.

    Your trainors look very good.

Very good job overall, keep it up.

    The Incredibles.

I like dithering <_< If it looks bad, I'll cut back. I've heard from multiple people that dithering in excess can be bad.

BECAUSE IT IS. If it's over used it cuts down the quality of the sprite and causes it to look spotted and bad, giving it no real shading. In some places in small ammounts, it's alright, but your Ing sprite has TO MUCH. Smooth it out and focus a little more on shading naturally, or like DPP style than dither dither everywhere.

The body is either A: Dragonair or B: Ekans. Or C: one of them edited.

Yes I know snake bodies are hard and that original poses are harder, but if you put some effort into it to make it look like you actually scratched the sprite, but I mean damn it shares the same damn belly stripe as Dragonair! And one of it's poses or an Ekan's pose of the same nature! There's also the fact strangely, it has bumps where Dragonair would!

There's also the fact, for basic pokemon, especially basic 3 stage starters, they are far, far to big. Compare them to Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmander. Or Mudkip, Treecko and Torchic, etc, your starters are almost twice the size of them- and easily the size of second stage pokemon!

And tbh Laeren's outline is to spotted with yellow, especially concerning the fact the yellow is where the BLACK markings are.

On a Pokemon sprite, dithering is only bad when it's obvious. You don't need to get rid of all the dithering, just some, like the stuff on Serplant and Pykra's heads.
And speaking of Pykra, what the hell is it supposed to be? I'm sorry, but most starters are easy to tell what animal they're based off of, but I can't for the life of me tell what he is.

I'll take this with good nature, since I understand that you enjoy giving constructive criticism. Like you said, serpent bodies are not easy. I did not edit an Ekans or Dragonair sprite, although I can see why you might make that connection. To be honest, Ekans was a heavy influence on it's appearance. I've considered redoing it and giving it legs.

I realized that the sprites were too large as soon as I finished. I have also considered making these the middle evolutions. I feel that they sort of give off that effect. For the time being, I will not change that, but I may if I see fit.

EDIT: I went to bulbapedia and guess what I found?

Believe it or not, I scratched this sprite all the while being completely oblivious to the overwhelming similarities.

And some people seem to have trouble determining what Pykra is. That's kind of like asking what Nidoran is supposed to be. I don't know, but I accept it anyways.

    Um. No.

Nidoran male and female, are pretty much based off of Rabbits [and probably other things], but the base form is a rabbit.

That's like asking What are the three beasts? People will cry and claim cats! Dogs!

The fact is they are based upon both- and for Entei it's most likely also got ties in what Arcanine is based off upon.

There are conflicting views over Arceus, from horse, kirin, deer, even a wolf.

But your fire starter, as pointed out, really doesn't look like anything. Well I mean I see a 'Muppet Dragonfish' but that doesn't really make sense as it's fire :/

It doesn't hurt to sometimes make a pokemon a little more like an 'animal'.

I've actually never gotten rabbit out of Nidoran. I was always just kinda like "Pokemon, yeah!". I suppose it might, but what threw me off was the fact that it's covered in spikes and horns.

The fire starter's design is derived from it's final evolution, which actually is based off of a Dragonfish :/. It would probably make more sense if you were to see it, but I don't have a sprite for it yet.

    Awesome sprites!!!

And yeah, I may be no spriter, but the sprites where they said you over dithered...well, they were right. Even for me, it didn't look too good.

But your flying-type Pokémon was much, much better. Looks more clean and sleek. I like the way you did that one.

Thank you for keeping such an amazingly positive attitude with the constructive criticism! Keep this up!

The dithering on these sprites takes away from the otherwise good body shapes. But remember, Pokemon are often bulkier than these very skinny ones.

I really don't get why people are being negative about these. I think there great. Was the Pykra based off Floatzel?
Also, when people say they aren't bulky enough.... Well, they are all first evolution aren't they? Look at Pichu. Bulky?

I thought I'd come by to see what you had at your thread. I like what you have here, although, I think Pykra's head is too big for it's body in my opinion. But I really do love Hermios and Ingenii. And I also love the dithering effect.

Like them all, and the grass starter looks like a splice of Ekans and Grovyle.

@ Lazyslacker: It does a bit, but it looks more like Ekans than it does a Grovyle. I barely see ANY Grovyle in that sprite. the only thing I see of Grovyle in that is the leaf and the colour scheme.

It uses Treecko's color scheme. I was trying to make sure it didn't look too much like Ekans, but it's fine because it evolves into a lizard.

Ah, so he/I was pretty close then. Yeah, it initially does look a bit like Ekans. Will we be able to see the evolution of it?

When I get around to making a sprite for it XD. I was about to work an a sprite for a squid-like Pokemon I sketched up a few days ago.

    Edit: Here it is.

Cepha, the Head Foot Pokemon. Cepha is rather uncommon in the wild. By itself it isn't very powerful, but it's evolution can be rather formidable.

I quite like Cepha, he'd me my kind of pokemon XD I think the first thing I noticed is you didn't dither him as much as you have with your sprites, which is not necessarily a bad thing. If I gave it a rating, I'd probably give it 8/10 only cos I'm picky with the amount of tentacles.

    New Sprite, Lighnat.

    Lighnat, the Firefly Pokemon.

Lighnat are rather docile during the day, but at night, it's abdomen illuminates the sky with brilliant color. They usually travel in large groups and put on dazzling displays for everyone to see.

Ability: Bright Glow - The opponent's accuracy is lowered.

    HP: 35
    Attack: 30
    Defense: 28
    Special Attack: 40
    Special Defense: 36
    Speed: 31
    BST: 200 (33.33 average)

Love the look of this one. Maybe spread out the wings on it. Colours are great. And besides the wings, I think it looks great. Actually, wings aren't that bad, when I look at it. Does it only have the one wing?

I was considering that, but I couldn't find a decent position for the second wing. It could have only the one wing, but perhaps I'll attempt to add a tiny bit of a second one beneath it's bulb.

Just behind the bulb would probably work. It doesn't have to be completely visible, it just has to be a bit visible if so.
