I chose to play as a male in Heart Gold, but recently I've restarted it and added another female to the list. It was the only male character I've ever played as (excluding the GCN games).

I am playing as the male although I am female.
At first I did actually play as the female but had named her Bella after my Twilight obsession which I had grown out of during my absence from the game while in Ecruteak (DO NOT judge and maybe give me a little credit for getting over it!) and had begun to regret starting with Chikorita. I favor Cyndaquil now so I got to solve two problems in creating a new file. I wanted the name Aidan this time which is a boy's name so the male was also necessary for name fitting purposes.

Call me weird but I also find the conversation where the daycare lady (Lyra/Ethan's grandmother) accuses you of being Lyra/Ethan's BF/GF a lot cuter as the boy. That and when at least a couple of female trainers call you a 'cute' or 'adorable' trainer. I found that weird as a girl even though they are older women.

Ever since the choice of a female trainer was introduced I have tried to take advantage but never seemed to get real into the game files using them. Then on top of that, as the franchise progressed some of them got ugly, such as May (whom I had also found extremely annoying in the anime and is one of the main reasons I stopped watching) and the female in Black. The SS/HG female is actually not ugly though she wears pink and I can't stand pink but I still favor the male because I like his outfit colors and hairstyle.
The only game I have ever actually completed as a female trainer is Pearl though now I have actually restarted that game as well and am now a male. XD

Interestingly I have a male friend who likes to play as the female trainers.

Female. I always play as the female character even though i'm a dude. Why you may ask? In my opinion I always see the female protagonist more well designed
than the male protagonist. Honestly every time a new pokemon game comes out the male looks boring. I rarely think "wow the boy character looks bad*ss for once!" With the exception of Brendan and Hugh
(who is not even playable but i think is the most coolest in design) all the rest come off as bland. Again just my opinion but the girls look cooler to play as and I am not ashamed to admit that with Dawn/Hikari being my favorite character overall.

I play as the male character partially because of the eyes. It's grey. I look at small details in the character. I named him Ginko after one of my fav characters in the anime Mushi shi. I like the design better. Although in other games like pearl I like dawn/hikari because the male character looks bland.
