In the Shadow of the Aftershock
Thousands and thousands of shinigami crowded into the basement of the bunker. The “Basement” was more like a shelter. The shinigami were not creating any commotion, except for a small few who acted like anyone should in a bunker-scared. The vast majority were simply standing there like statues, waiting. Three shinigami specifically were in the middle of the room. Several metal rods surrounded them, and a Zanpakutou was stabbed into the exact center of the circle.
Energy rushed between the rods, given off by the three in massive quantities. They were rushing. It was not safe.
The red sky bathed the destroyed city with it’s bloody glow. Ruins of walls and a Feudal Japanese city were all that was remaining in the area. Except for one building. It stood out from the ruins easily. It was made of sleek metal, which reflected the full red light like an unichromatic disco ball.
The building was only ten feet high, mainly because everything happened underground. A single figure sat atop the building, their eyes scanning the ruins fervently. A katana was at his side, the hilt already in his hands. It was quiet. Too clichédly damned quiet
A figure walked silently behind him. He jumped up and silently whispered, “Show your power, Soulgain”-somehow detecting the other person. His Zanpakutou faded away as metal washed over his body-forming a loose armor. Blades decorated his blue and silver armor. Metallic cuffs each jut out an outward blade, for example. “Aleph Rickes (Completely random name. I happen to be bad at names.) Captain of the Soul Society Special Tactical Assassination Squad…Codename…Bahamut”
Aleph just looked at the other for a few seconds, “Calling me by my codename isn’t going to change your fate.” He said simply, rushing forward as his Zanpakutou turned into a huge watery mass instantly. Blades of water began cutting at the door as Aleph charged the other.
“Yes…I will kill you and then make the jump. Fate indeed.” He replied cockily before releasing his bankai. “Soulgain, Activate Code: KIRIN.” Energy engulfed his body, powering his movements and increasing his speed. His cuffs span rapidly, the blade on each producing a point of energy at the tips. He punched forwards twice, balls of powerful energy firing at Aleph. “Die Bahamut!”
The pale moon, struggling to output its feeble light against the will of the drifting clouds, barely spotlighted the figures that gathered on Earth. The cold desert air drifted slowly across the area, etching lines across the sand-dramaticized greatly by the moon until irregular shadows were, apparently, etched into the very ground, only to shift in the wind, but the figures didn’t care about that.
“You did well, Ms. Ookami” A green haired man in what appeared to be a shinigami uniform and captain’s haori.
“Helios left behind his Zanpakutou, and you saw my Masterpiece disappear, did you not?” The apparent Ookami replied coolly.
“There was no proof that thing made it here. We still don’t know, based on the number of his mass-produced version that even made it here with us.” The first replied coldly, looking around at the other figures. They were all garbed in shinigami clothing, complete with Zanpakutou. There were three others that stood out, for they were garbed in Captain’s Haoris as well-including Ms. Ookami.
“Bah, let’s just find Helios already” Muttered a red-haired man, clearly irritated in general.
“Ms. Ookami, activate Aguieus.” The Green-haired man commanded.
“Of course, Captain-Commander” She said, a gate opening up beneath the group…
It was just another boring day in the Sereitei, nothing was new in the slightest. Well, at first there was nothing new at all. Despite disorder in the ranks and a huge sense of emptiness in general in the empty city, the shinigami all went in a surprisingly organized and average fashion. Some of them were on Earth killing hollows, some of them were in Hueco Mundo killing hollows, others were doing paperwork or training. It was peaceful, simple, calm.
Then, Kida Ookami walked through the gates of the Sereitei for the first time in months. A large bag was slung over her shoulder and her face was cold and serious. The Sereitei stopped and stared for a moment as she arrived, before returning to normalcy as she shunpo’d rapidly into Captain Commander Golde’s House itself.
“Kida-Taichou, you’ve returned” He noted, a bit of surprise in his voice as he sipped his tea. A large bowl next to his teapot had a few sparse grains of sugar remaining in it.
She walked over and sat by him, opening the bag and pulling out a girl, a bit younger than her, and allowing the unconscious girl to lay there. “She was brainwashed.” Kida said with a deadly silence, stroking the cheek of her younger sister.
Very few people knew about Chii Ookami. Other than, of course, her sister. They were both experiments in the Twelfth division lab as well as shinigami. Ex-Captain (Before Narcisse) Setme and Ex-Vice Captain Cuervo had been studying mutant technology when they discovered Kida, and they had been studying Brainwave patterns when they encountered Chii. One day, many years ago, they disappeared along with several of their test subjects. Kida was spared, her sister was not.
When she later appeared, supposedly the leader of Ex-Captain Magnus and their other allies, Kida confided only in Golde-Soutaichou. But Chii wasn’t Chii. She called herself Lilith Lilith was powerful, but in the end she was beaten. The intense power needed to break the barrier she had been using caused the explosion that lead to her defeat and disappearance.
The next day Golde-Soutaichou ordered a meeting of the Captains as well as the OTX and EWX teams (They are still around.) The subject? Chii Ookami.
“…Now, hearing that, do I have any objections against allowing Chii to train in private for a while before rejoining the Court Guard Squads?”
A tiny blip
was heard in the room, like a drop of water falling.
“Just one, Golde-Soutaichou…”
