But I completely encourage other people to try new and different things, partly because, sure, we need more people in the fandom to take canon to new heights but mostly because it's just really interesting to see what people can do with it. I know I had a lot of fun working out what I can and can't do with a sci-fi Pokémon fic.
Most of the reviews I do are chapter by chapter, and I can be really precise, but your fic has so many chapters, and really has so many points to cover that I'm going to skip that.
Totally and completely understandable. XD I'm looking forward to seeing your more detailed reviews in future chapters, though. I could always use a second/third/so-forth eye.
So if this seems somewhat jumpy and poorly worded, I apologize lol
Haha, just looking at the length of your review, I know that it's probably going to be an awesome one. XD
First off, the sleep powder laced flower. Very nice addition. I've always been obsessed with taking Pokemon moves further and somehow weaponizing them for humns.
Thanks, and high five
. I have to admit, one of the challenges with Domino is the fact that she doesn't
use pokémon, so at times like this, I had to come up with something she would
use. I'm glad it came out all right, though; if I said I didn't have fun with it, I'd be lying.
But now this makes me eager to finish reading your stuff. If you agree and are obsessed with that, that can only mean awesome things for your take on the Pokémon world.
Another bit I really liked was the fact that Bill, Oak, and crew experimented on Pokemon. Using the Rattata to test the aliens reactions and time their consumption times was brilliant. Real world experimentation goes on all the time. Pigs, monkeys, rats, etc, nothing is immune when it comes to humans trying to make sure we're safe from this or that. So many fics I read nowadays are so afraid to treat Pokemon as anything less than 'darling friends and life partners', but they cn be less. Later on when you had Bill eat a Zigzagoon was another part that stoof out for me. Pokemon eat, and alot of them eat meat, so why is it shown in your fic and not in as many others? Because you're not afraid to cross that line, and I love it. The eating, and experimentation were awesomely realistic touches. good job!
Thank you! Also, I have to agree with the part about fics treating pokémon like sacred life partners, and this goes for the question of whether or not the characters eat pokémon too. In the end, while pokémon may or may not exactly be
animals, they're also not humans. That distinction's really important to make because humans in real life have a tendency to classify non-human objects as, well, objects. That isn't to say that we wouldn't treat cats and dogs like beloved family members. It's just saying that this is why the actual act of eating meat isn't actually cruel. (How the animals are treated up until slaughter may be, but that's a different story.) When it comes to pokémon, there's so many different kinds that might not even be based on animals that it just seems silly to have a human who equates eating pokémon to animal cruelty. I mean, if a character objects to eating a growlithe because you don't eat dogs, then how does that same character feel about eating a salad as opposed to a chikorita or oddish? If you feed a cherrim a cheri berry, would that be practically cannibalism?
Besides, whether writers like it or not, pokémon battling is
an ingrained part of that universe's culture, and neither the humans nor the pokémon (for the most part) see anything wrong with it. Training is basically a symbiotic partnership: while humans grow and learn as people during their journey, pokémon are allowed to become stronger and more specialized (and therefore more effective) fighters than they would if they stayed in the same habitat. So is it cruelty to capture and train pokémon?
Granted, my headcanon says that animals do
exist and can
be used as food sources for humans, and most people only eat pokémon as a last resort. (However, this is because a chicken is less likely to set you on fire if you try to kill it or take its eggs, not because it's cruel.) But yeah, the humans in this universe don't see pokémon as being absolute equals.
Same thing when it comes to experimentation. Pokémon researchers in particular don't really have a choice sometimes – including in this case, when observing the ixodida in the wild was already known to put anyone within a certain distance of it in danger.
Of course, I'm not saying this to defend myself or anything. I'm just saying that I totally agree with you that the whole "omg people doing anything with pokémon that people in real life do with animals is cruel" thing is rather silly and sort of reminds me of all the terrible 90's eco-friendly cartoons. (Oh, Ferngully and Captain Planet. You were my childhood, but you were all so anvil-happy.) …And that's why I can't take Team Plasma seriously!
Besides the very rare comma mistake or incorrectly spelled word, your grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure are all superbly done. Great job on that, as I know that you're aware that good grammar goes a long way in creating a story that everyone can relate to.
Thank you, and exactly
. ;_; More people need to know that the more errors one has in their work, the harder it is to focus on it, seriously. >_>
BTW, I like the way you go back and edit every chapter to fix things. It shows that you can accept criticism and can LISTEN to what other people suggest (which is becoming increasingly now rareadays in some forums I visit >.>
Haha, inorite? I always try to do this, mostly because nine times out of ten, the things people suggest – especially when it comes to plot (but even when it comes to the little things, like grammar and wording) – make the entire chapter so
much better. It's just that I haven't been able to fix up most of the chapters yet because the longer I go, the more material I have to cover and rework. X_x And oh, the coding involved.
Also, it's so much more fun and relaxing to talk with reviewers if they know you'll actually respond to them one way or another.
Just to touch on Bill's, and to a lesser extent, Lanette's transformation, I think they were great. Especially Bill's. I felt like I was there when I was reading it. I could watch the events play out in my head so clearly that your reading was barely required. You gave me the start, and described it, and I let my mind just run wild with it. Not only are they wonderfully and grotesquely described, but they feel real. I hurt when the characters did, I want to cry when they do, especially when it comes to a surgeons hand getting sliced off, or seeing a metal exoskeleton inside you.
Now this is, in general, awesome to hear. It's good to know that you could picture all of that. It's a pretty confusing scene, so I'm glad it comes across well. b)'')b
I've always liked the thought of a deep part of someone's mind that they can ask questions, run, get attacked, blah blah blah.
. Same here, which is totally why I threw them in. That and it's just a lot easier to get information across, rather than just infodumping.
Not sure why, but it feels hopeless when he's in that forest. I know he comes out of it everytime, but its still sad to me (In a depressingly beautiful kind of way)
Oh wow, thank you. O.o Seriously, it's not that often I hear that AEM has nearly made someone cry, and when it happens, I always feel awesome because I feel like I've done my job as a storyteller. So, egotism aside, that is seriously flattering, so sincerely, thanks!
When you were talking about the ship incident in Johto, it really reminded me of the scenes from 'World War Z', and 'The Passage'. Not that I'm comparing your work to their's, but it was quite similar.
Aww, but comparing AEM to zombie flicks is half the fun. ;D
…Although I haven't read The Passage
yet, and something tells me I should be ashamed of myself for that.
Mainly in the sense that your's and their's are EXTREMELY well written and informative.
I felt the tragedy when I realized that the ship was doomed, and before you even wrote it, what it meant for the people of Hoenn that were left behind. I hope that makes sense lol
It does, and awesome.
Spinda kicks so much ***! She is BY FAR my favorite trainer owned Pokemon the fic.
Haha, thanks! I think she, Kecleon, and Chansey are the most fun for me to write. (Probably obviously, considering how much time I spend on them compared to the others.) It also helps that Spinda is easily one of my favorite Hoenn Pokémon, so… *cackles* Yeeeeessss. Join the Cult of Spinda.
You definately owe me a Fic with solely Spinda's in it after this story is over.
On that note, the Pokemon moves you describe are always very well done. They seem realistic and appropriate for when they are used, and you really do have a talent when it comes to the pacing of a battle and how its described. Great job!
Thank you! It helps that I used to be a regular ref in other boards' Anime Style Battling leagues. Leagues that required insane amounts of detail in their reffings. (Which is probably why I never really got into the ASB on this board. It looks okay, but it's just not the system I'm used to.)
Tl;dr, my secret is roleplaying like crazy.
From his cold calculating start, to the way he slowly starts to use sarcasm and jokes, he always stood out. His struggle with Bill, almost from the stance of an annoyed parent, ha really appealed to me.
Thank you! It's always fun to write Adam, so…!
I can tell he's good at heart (though I secretly hope he's not, haha) I don't think there has been enough explanation to justify him going out of his way to protect the Relian's and their way of life. While obviously noble and brave, I want to know his motives behind it. Obviously you have to keep some things back (even now I feel like I'm only scraping the surface of him), but when it goes into his backstory, I just feel somewhat unfufilled.
It's good that you noticed that. Keep that in mind because there's a reason for it. A completely evil (on my part) reason that you'll find out soon enough. *tents fingers*
If you noticed, there really is nothing I don't like about your fic. Except a hiccup here and there with a word I would have used differently, or a different one altogether, IMO there is nothing wrong with it. Your pacing is perfect, your description is brilliant, and your characters are relateable.
Thank you! \o/
Absolutely. ;D You'll start receiving PMs about the fic when the next chapter comes out.

Hopefully I'll have plenty of time over the summer to catch up. ;_;
That's what summer's all about, amirite? ;D
:-D ...I love it when you do lists.
Awesome. Because lists are like crack. XD
Oh I wouldn't doubt that.
Nettle: Would you like to have one arsenic laced sugarlump or two?
…I smell another crack special.
KNOW YOUR PLACE, DOMINO. Lanette already placed dibs on him. She may not be aware of it, but she did.
I now have the mental image of Lanette fending off the other female characters with her crowbar while Bill stands in a corner, completely confused.
No touchy until she submits to her innermost passionate desires which most definitely would involve that crowbar of hers in some way.
That sounds like something that would render Bill unable to sit down for a week.
Ouch...even his father. Poor guy.
To be fair, it's usually Bill who would have to go fetch his father from (read: drag John out of) the Goldenrod Game Corner, so it's not completely
unlike the other opinions
Show the poor guy you care sometimes.
In my mind, her eye would start twitching at that statement.
It feels like we haven't seen this guy in a while, not that I'm complaining.
XD Yeah, I have a habit of forgetting characters exist, don't I? Well, that's semi-rectified with the next chapter!
;_; Now I wonder if you got your inspiration from River Tam.
I think I know what Tate is getting him for his birthday.
And I smell another
crack special on the horizon.
...Does he still have Anime!Ash's cluelessness and (sometimes) blatant stupidity? Because that combination ought to be gold.
A little bit! Ono!Ash is a bit more clever than anime!Ash (he once cheated Gary Oak
out of a trading card of his sister), but he'd still fall for some pretty stupid tricks (like buying a "map" to Clefairy nests from the shadiest dealer ever). To be honest, Ono!Ash is all-around more likeable because he's not really a moron all the time. He's just a moron some
of the time, and when he has his moron moments, yep, he's a lot like anime!Ash.
...wait....what did Toshihiro do with Brock then? No wait....maybe I don't want to know.
Pretty awesome things, actually. XD Ono based his manga off the first season, which was back when Brock wasn't all that perverted. So, he's actually pretty mature most of the time, although there's a rather silly episode where he approves of Ash's love for hot women… before angsting about a past relationship with Sabrina (who in that universe is actually a bubbly sweetheart… besides being hell-bent for revenge against a Haunter).
Speaking of which, what kind of dude would want to walk around in a gaming world where everything is just one big distraction? Seems to me that type of person doesn't have much of a life.
XD I'm inclined to agree, although I do have to admit it makes some
sense. If you want to make all
aspects of the game fun for yourself, if you know what I mean.
What armor? Oh, you mean that puny thing. How is that logically going to protect anything like, oh I don't know, your character's heart?
IT PROTECTS THE MOST IMPORTANT BITS. :V
I'm shamefully addicted to Mabinogi,
Ooh, Mabinogi. I've heard of that (thanks to following Nexon closely in general), and I've always been meaning to try it because it sounds a lot like a prettier, more sandbox-like MapleStory. But now I will! 8D
"More realism" doesn't mean unrealistic chest bouncing and illogical armor selections.
I'm also angry that looking up Pokemon stuff in a search engine on "strict" still brings up stuff unsuitable for children. Is it really too hard to put even a subtle censor on it?
…What, seriously? Wow, Google. That's just chock full o' fail right there.
So he gets high off of Gloom's fumes to get how a Gloom feels?
Exactly. ;D Or high off Gloom's fumes to get how pretty much anything
It's funny because I don't often ship same gender(not that I have anything against it, it's just never really been much of my "flavor" if you know what I mean).
Totally A-OK. Sometimes, characters just have more chemistry with characters of the opposite sex.
Well we *sortof* had this a few chapters back. I kind of like it because of the whole "Hoenn Champion vs. Faint Hearted Researcher Genius, duke it out GO". I'm really interested in this being the relationship that Bill will have to overcome.
He'll have to save Lanette from oh so perfect Champion/heir to Devon co. rich boy
READER'S REQUEST ACKNOWLEDGED. o>
This one I'm not so excited about, unless it's a love quadrilateral with Steven. I guess in part because I see Bill as someone who can all too easily overcome whatever obstacle Vito can deal, while Steven..he's the friggin' Champion.
Also because I hate Vito with the heat of a thousand burning suns.
Awww… but Vito is the cute boy-next-door who fails at Pokémon journeying.
Wallace hitting on Steven and the latter going ಠ_ಠ
I love it.
You're welcome. It's now totally going to happen. ;D
Veronica: No. ****** gun*
why it's going to be one-sided from Thom's perspective. XD
NOT REALLY. ;_;
I always thought Bill's obsession for Eevelutions stems from his mom being a Kimono Girl (with all their Eevelutions). It makes me wonder whether or not this was put in the game on purpose.
You know, I never thought of that, but that makes perfect
Once upon a time I played percussion for band. Does that count?
I KNOW HOW YOU FEEEEEL. ;_; *responding to reviews instead of doing research*
There's something I've been wondering about after I'd read the Valentine's special...Sooooo if Bill were to use Attract on a mirror, would he infatiate himself with himself or (since I'm almost 99.999% sure it's Adam doing the attacking) would Bill become infatuated with Adam?
Adam would become infatuated with Bill. ;D
Second question: Tate wouldn't happen to know a mirror-like move like Light Screen or something would he? >:-D
Will respond to the rest soon!
