I levelled a caterpie into a butterfree and confusioned them to fainting point.
The most Superior Snivy. Left, good time here though. I loved this place.
Mankey, Nindoran, Caterpie all do a great job
I usually went with a Mankey because Primeape is freaking awesome!
what attacks did Mew have?
I don't like training a pokemon just because I need it for a gym, so no Butterfree/Mankey/Nidoran unless I already planned to have one. I almost always use a Pidgey, so my strategy usually involves grinding Pikachu to get it Quick Attack, then spamming Sand-Attack, Growl, and Tail Whip until Brock's pokemon are useless. The fact that I only use two pokemon early on really helps as far as levelling up goes.
Pidgey with sand attack then follow up with pikachu's tail whip to lower defense and quick attack the geodude. Proceed with onix like geodude
I level grinned pickchu to a superchu and beat brock
Catch a caterpie, evolve it all the way to Butterfree. Works like a charm for me.
Adopt one yourself! @Pokémon Orphanage

i caught mankey and also used my pidgey to spam sand attack.
† I am a Christian, and not ashamed to admit it! Copy and paste this if you are too.†
I most often caught a mankey and then I started using a butterfree in later play throughs.
Did the cheapest thing possible.
Spam Double Team on Pikachu.
All I have to say is....
MANKEY used LOW KICK!
It's gonna be alright, hang in there!
If you're talking about normal gameplay, then Mankey on Route 22. If not, then Nidoking Level 100 via Experience Underflow Glitch.

Looking for a in SoulSilver.
Currently experimenting with in Yellow.
I thought the best thing to do was lv pika to learn quick attack, tail whip geadude then potion him kill dude, then onixs fav move was bide, left him wide open for tail whips still this was when i was abit older, first release, had to be the mankey xD
The ONLY way to do it in any first generation game was Caterpie.
Butterfree + Confusion meant no challenge at all against Brock ^.^

If I remember correctly, I picked up a Mankey along the way to help me.
I caught a Mankey as most of you did. It was very powerful against Brock. I lost a couple times though. Right now I'm stuck in this cave where you get this stone that can evolve Nidoran.
spamming quick attack. i wept.
oh it's a love/hate romance. 'cause i could watch her dance, if i've got my boots.

I caught Mankey and leveled it to about 17. quite rigorous work to do that, especially in gen 1.

Mankey or Butterfree will help you. But, I traded Pokemon over to train, so they helped me win.
Either psychic on butterfree, double kick with nidoran, or mankey
