I caught Mankey and leveled it to about 17. quite rigorous work to do that, especially in gen 1.
Mankey or Butterfree will help you. But, I traded Pokemon over to train, so they helped me win.
Pesky forum trolls
Either psychic on butterfree, double kick with nidoran, or mankey
When I was kid, I used Mankey like the Players Guide said(I was 10 so Pokemon was a hard game for me).
Now that I'm older and really know how to play the game, I used male Nidoran with it's Double Kick because Nidoking fits my team's elemental theme.
A real gamer is one that plays for fun and enjoys a decent story.
I don't know if I posted in this thread.
I trained my Nidoran, Pikachu, Pidgeotto, and Butterfree up to level 25. Yes, it was a pain to do it while they are dealing with low level wild Pokemon. I used Nidoran's double kick to win my first badge.

I have horrible nightmares of my Pidgey using Quick Attack in a futile attempt to take down Onix... I was young at the time.
But then I saw sense; I caught and trained a Mankey.
I got the game yesterday and caught a caterpie, then trained until it was a butterfree then spammed confusion. But when Brock's onix used bide I used confusion one more time, then switched out for a pidgey and used it as a sacrifice. It was pretty easy.
I've finally got the shiny charm if that is what it is called.
I have completed the national dex,
I will take requests from people to breed shiny pokemon for you.
you must have wi-fi though to trade.
My first pokemon I bred to test the shiny charm was a trapinch, that came in after 31 eggs.
PM me for requests.

if your pokemon is not there then I have not got to it yet (I put them in the order I got the request)
Ready to be traded + person to be traded to
trapinch (KazeJin)
I didn't have Yellow, but my cousin did. She got stuck on the first gym, and asked me to help. This was years after she got the game; I'd read about using Butterfree on the internet. I tried that, but it was hard. I don't rember exactly how I did it; there was no special strategy. It was a team effort which required every Pokemon. Pikachu wound up bearing the brunt of the attack simply becaust it had more hit-points. I had to buy poitions, if I remember correctly.
Later I got a copy of Yellow, but it wouldn't save. Once I got as far as Mt. Moon; I got past Brock using the same desperate methods.
I am a Christian and proud of it! Copy and paste this into your sig if you are too.
I raised a Mankey and chipped Brock away
I did things the hard way.... Raised Pikachu up to Level 20 so it could learn Slam. Took forever...
Fortunately through my second playthrough onwards, I discovered Mankey.
