Main one. Never save as JPEG .... ALWAYS save as PNG format. JPEG picture quality is never good, so I can't give any feedback until you redo it in PNG format.

It doesn't work if you just take the JPEG file and resave it as PNG format. You have to make the whole thing again. The sprite is still incredibly blurry and low quality

that effect is cool to know- the matte of stripes over an object to make it glossy.

i think i might also steal the pokemon effect when you get a badge with the white stripe moving across the object and then a white flash

I have the student version of Photoshop, so I figured I'd give it a shot... unfortunetly, I think it's because it's the student version but I just could not get that black outline around the silver. Or it could just be because I'm self taught. Anyway, I'll work on that but I still wanted to put this up here, just to make sure I've got the effects and all going the right way.

^ the more you experiment and work on them you'll be able to create the same visual effect using different tools in GIMP, maybe.

I have the student version, so I don't understand why it's not working for you.

I will say a couple of things - one, it's a bit too complicated, I can hardly see the basic form of the pokemon and two, the silver lining is a bit thick.

Yeah, I'm self taught so I'm going to have to go poking around a bit more with things like that. And with the lining, what size brush do you use? That should help with the size.

And I'll try and keep it simpler with things. Thanks for the advice.

Well, I tend to use a size 9 brush, but with a pressure sensetive tablet it comes out at about thickness size 5 brush.
But I make the badge to fit a canvas size at about 200 x 200, then shrink it down to 50 x 50, it makes the lines neater and smoother.

    Hello,

I'm new with photoshop and all, and was just wondering if you could help me out a bit.

I plan on doing my badge without the tablet, and I'm only making a red circle badge. So it should be easy, right? But, I'm not sure about all of these terms like desaturate, and I don't even know how to shrink down an image... =(

I really want to make a badge though, so could you please help me out?

Hope to hear from you soon,

    xx Tubby Cat xx

PS: Have you ever thought about making a video tutorial for this? It would be helpful...

Get a trial of "Camtasia". I use it, and it works awesome. Follow this link to get the trial:

It can also be used to edit. If you do plan on making a video tutorial, I would love you forever.

I have a tablet, but I have Corel Painters Essentials. Is that a good substitute for Photoshop?

You got the shading bits right, but I would suggest avoiding bright colours like that green, because when you use overlay effect on them it has no effect. Desaturate and darken that green a bit and the shading lines will come over completley.

My first attempt at badges. It's not too bad, but not great.
If you believe in Jesus Christ put this in your profile and don't just ignore this, because in the Bible it says, ‘If you deny me, I will deny you in front of my Father in the gates of Heaven.’

Thank you, Mew_, for this Broken Signature, and -Sarah, for this userbar.
