Uhm, almost every single Pokemon's name in the entire game is what you call a "pun", even though the correct word is "portmanteau", or a combination of two words.

If you really want to know more, go to Google. I highly doubt anyone here would like to explain the portmanteaus behind all 500-ish names.

For the sake of posting and not making this spam, here's some of my favorites:

    Roserade - Rose + Masquerade
Milotic - Milo (as in the Venus de Milo) + Exotic
Gardevoir - Garde (as in "en garde", or guard) + Devoir (meaning "to have to", making the entire word mean "To have to guard", making the name synonymous with it's Dex description)
Girafarig - Palindrome of "Giraf", like "Giraffe", obviously.

I thought Torterra was Toroise and Terra as in the Greek/Latin element Terra, which can be traslated to earth/ground.

I just worked this one out the other day

    Gallade - Gallant + blade

    Bulbasaur - Bulb + Dinosaur

    Carnivine - Carnivorous + Vine

    Monferno - Monkey + inferno

    Sudowoodo - (Sudo=corruption of pseudo) + wood

Darkrai is a fusion between the wrod Dark, and kurai, the japanese word for... dark.
    Darkdark.

One thing, looking at 5th gen Japanese roamnisations, you can often spot that they're plays on english words as well, which gives an idea of which ones might retain thier names.

Gigaiath, for example, is a fusion of Giga, gaia and goliath. Perfectly feaslible in english, could easily retain its name.

    Houndoom-Hound of Doom
Farfetch'd-A combination of Far-fetched and Fetch (which you generally play with sticks).

    Okay, let's see...

Sneasel = snow + weasel (Weasel? what weasel? Where?)
Weavile = weasel + vile (Still a rather strange looking weasel...)
    numel = numb + camel
camerupt = camel + erupt (Wat camel?)
magmortar = magma + mortar (The mortar bit almost makes you wonder why it isn't a part rock or ground type.)

This list goes on for a long time. There are only a few pokemon whose names are not like this, and most of those are mainly corruptions (e.g. ledyba, graveler, magmar, etc.) or have no basis in the english language (e.g. pachirisu).

    I have claimed Relcihav!
Okay, I know it's not real, but that's not going to stop me.

Can't forget the Blaze Chicken that is Blaziken, or the Combustion Chicken that is Combusken, and the Torch Chick that is Torchic.

^ But you obviously double posted on purpose.

Squirtle = squirt + turtle (looks more like a tortoise to me, but oh well. At least they got it right for Blastoise)
    Butterfree = butterfly + free
Beedrill = Bee + drill (not the most imaginitive imo)
Sandshrew = sand + shrew (damnit generation I names are the least creative)
    Venomoth = venom + moth

    I have claimed Relcihav!

All pokemon have "puns". Some are more obvious than others.

Umbreon: Umbra is Latin for shadow. It's a dark type. Eon, cause the rest of the Eevee clan has it. =/

Deoxys: Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). He rearranges his genetic code to change forms.

Pikachu: Pika is a small rodent and "Chu" is the sound they supposidly makes (I looked this up a long time ago....).

Teddiursa: Ursa is Latin for bear so it's simply a "Teddybear". =3

Hitmonchan/lee/top: Hit (to punch) + Mon (monster) + Chan/Lee/Top (Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, cause they're well known martial artists and I think Lee perfected some sort of kick. I'm still waiting for a Hitmonoris, though....And Top cause it looks like a top.)

The list goes on and on....
    Pikawho: 5413 5779 3126 (Pt) / 4941 7679 5057 (SS) / 0474 5386 6385 (Pearl) / 2795 0047 2273 (Black) / 2148 8311 0090 (3DS)

Pikapika is the japanese onomatopoieauaia (can't spell that last bit) for the crackle of electricity, and chu is the onomatopioiea for the squak of a mouse.

Also, to add on to Deoxys' origins, it's forms are

    Defense
    Normal
    Attack

    Then they added speed. :|

Wow, I never even realized that. This makes me hate Deoxys's speed form even more than I already did.

A turtle lives in or near the water and a tortoise usually lives in sandy arid areas.

And Bulbapedia have a pokedex, where the puns, are listed in Name Origins at the bottom of each pokemon's page.
And just to add some completely random(just clicked on some pokemon on Bulbapedia's page)to the list:
    Wigglytuff-Wiggly and Tuff
    Dewgong-Dew and Dugong
Mareep-Mary(from a girl in a tale that had a lamb) and Sheep, Marrep is also an anagram of Ampere.
Brelom-Umbrella and Mushroom/Bloom, Bellum aslo means War in Latin.

    Wobbufet

When you attack, it wobbles back and forth, but at the same time buffets you with counter.

    Feraligatr

Just a feral alligator. Or possibly a feared alligator?

Alpha Sapphire --> Arceus is the Alpha pokemon --> Arceus is a generation 4 pokemon --> Sinnoh confirmed!!

(Yeah, get used to it now, because this is what you're going to have to put up with for the next 5-7 years)

'Pikapika' is a Japanese term for 'sparkly/something that sparkles'.

The rodent Pika isn't even pronounced like Pikachu; it's 'pie-ka' (pie, as in the things you eat).
