There's really no such thing as tips for random encounters.

You have a 1 in 8192 chance in finding a shiny.

Think of a hat with a bunch of pieces of paper with numbers written on them. Let's say the numbers range from 1 to 100. You pick a number and try to draw it out of the hat. You can draw a number out of the hat as many times as you want.. that means a 1% chance to draw that number each time you take out a piece of paper. BUT, when you draw that number, you have to put the number back into the hat, meaning it's possible to draw that same number again. Now instead of 100, think of 8192. That's a 0.00012207031% chance. Your chances don't go up or down with the more numbers you draw.

So you could have exactly 8192 encounters and still never find a shiny because that number is the probability, not how many encounters you need. It's like putting the numbers back into the hat. I have played through Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Platinum, HeartGold, and White at least 2 times each. Some maybe 5 or more times. I have only encountered TWO shinies since 1998 when I started playing Pokemon. One was in White, and one was in Platinum.

Can someone give me some RE Hunting Tips? I am playing my Heart Gold, and I am at the start in Route 29 hunting for a shiny Hoothoot. I have Chickorita in front and I have made several files, I am at 18,000 RE's. Am I missing anything? Do I need the first badge or am I not far enough into the game?
Any tips would really help, thx. And GL too all your hunts!

What do you mean by several files, do you play it on ROM?
Just keep REing until the shiny appears. That's the only tips.

I was playing through on my HG nuzlocke when I came a cross a shiny Geodude, however it had a great idea of using self destruct on the first turn. Oh well. It was via random encounter and would have been my 3rd RE Geodude anyway.

7,179 REs and no shiny on Route 35. My last shiny was my Wooper with 3,828 REs. No shiny for 13,000 REs, including my Headbutt Hunt.

My 7th Platinum Badge Quest shiny has just appeared after 5922 encounters! ^_^

It wasn't the shiny Sneasel I wanted, but it's still a nice shiny that I didn't already have.

I've got a Shiny Gastly in Platinum, when I was at the Eterna Forest. I think I got it two years ago, not sure.

I'm new to the site but not to Pokemon...... Proud Genwunner!! lol.....I'm trying to see if there is anybody willing to trade shinies legitimately. Just had my first RE on SoulSilver. It was a Magenemite on Route 38. It was a little difficult not to KO it cause I was training so I didn't have a False swiper, but with it's health very low I got it with an ultra ball.

I'm going back to chaining ok gen4 (platinum) again the last shiny I found were 2 shiny elektrike via the pokeradar at a chain of over 75 it was one of my least successsful chains (in involving catching shinies that is) and that was a few months ago, I haven't found another one in awhile, but assuming ky game let's me, I'm going to hunt for shiny mawhile, machop, another roselia, pichu, cleffa, and also a shiny metang (if the ingame sandstorm allows it) I wish everyone good luck on their RE hunts, MM shinies, Chaining, and badge quests I look forward to coming back here and seeing/hearing what shinies everyone finds

Congrats on all the recent shinies!

I've just gotten to 2910 SRs for Groudon. I've hardly done that many days of SRing since my last post, but the times I do I always manage to get a lot done in one go XD. Neearly at 3000~

Also I finally got around to making a shiny card for my sig . I like the layout, but I'm not sure about the sizes of the sprites/ some of the text. Everything looks a bit too small ><. Gah, I think I'll try and make an improved one sometime, but I guess it'll do for now.

That showed up after 4027 soft resets. I had to masterball it in the end since it ended up running out of pp after using a rest, and struggled once. I wish you all luck on your hunts, and I'll be sure to let you all know when my heart starts again.

I just got my first ever shiny . A Timid Bulbasaur with pretty good IVs. Was hoping for a non shiny Modest with some good IVs but this is far better. Time to try my luck with Squirtle

Just to let you know, your Pokémon is set to private in PokéCheck, so we can't see the screenshot :3
(I'd recommend using the PrtScrn key on Pokécheck, blanking out the PID and re-uploading it somewhere else.

I see you registered so that you could post that, in which case I'm hoping you keep coming on here and talking about your future shinies.

Timid + Shiny indeed is far better than Modest + Good IV's, IMO.

If you think about it... had you chosen to hatch it still in D/P/Pt, it'd have hatched non-shiny and you would have missed out. :/

I want to get a shiny Charmander from Professor Oak in Heartgold. I know that, with the Johto starters, you can look at the picture without going into the summary to tell if the pokemon is shiny. Does the same rule apply to the Kanto starters, or do I have to go into the summary?
