Meh, I guess at first I kind of liked the idea, but it gives the impression that the game focuses more on the monster-hunting aspect than the creative aspect. I suppose that might not be too far off for Survival, but still.

i remember building a redstone cannon in 1.5ish that was really easy.
i dunno if it doesn't work anymore or something, but i'm AWFUL with redstone, so if it still does work i can't imagine it should be too difficult for anyone else.
edit: also, as a note to the disc named "strad", i think strad means slabs in Swedish. don't quote me on that though.
