3rd Gen Scramble Challenge Thread!

Try a Chimecho named Hoppip, after the anime episode featuring the Magikarp salesman passing off the latter as the former. It may only learn or use moves the species Hoppip can: naturally this is Confusion and Double-Edge while by TMs you can choose from Toxic, Hidden Power, Sunny Day, Protect, Frustration, Return, Double Team, Facade, Secret Power, Rest, Attract, and Flash.

And I vote Luvdisc for Surfer.

For my Pokemon Ruby Weakling Challenge (Info seen here) my team will be:

Muffin (named after the person who picked Linoone for me since he/she didn't give me a nickname)

I'll be writing about my events of this challenge in parts. I'll be doing a short...ish summary where I talk about almost everything that happens before I get a gym badge.

I'll keep updating this post when I add more parts.

I start the Ruby version like any other; first I help the gender confused professor by telling him that I'm a male and then I give him my name, which I decide fittingly as "Vairon". After pointlessly setting my clock since my game's battery is dead I head off to speak to my neighbor May.

After all that pointless jazz I finally get a Pokemon from Professor Birch, who I won't even be really using this challenge, after saving him from a Poochyena. I pick a Mudkip, who I name Starter as it'll be useful as being a surf slave till Corsola arrives. I easily defeat May and as a result I get a Pokedex, some Poke Balls, and running shoes.

I head off to route 101 where I find and catch a level 3 female Zigzagoon, the first weakling of my party. She ends up having a Sassy nature and I nickname her, from her predetermined name, Muffin. I head off to route 102 where I try to find and catch a Surskit while training. And boy do I have to do a lot of finding, and I mean A LOT. While searching for a Surskit Muffin found a Protein, Ultra Ball, Rare Candy, PP Up, and a Super Potion. She probably would have found more if I had taken her items faster. I even found 7 Ralts before I finally found a Surskit.

My jaw almost dropped when I finally found a Surskit, I quickly switched to Starter the Mudkip to weaken the Surskit as I didn't want Muffin to crit it. Since it took so much time to find the Surskit I used a Premeir Ball, that I got for buying ten Poke Balls in Oldale Town, to catch the Surskit. I gave him the predetermined nickname NetBall. This little guy has a Naughty nature, great I have a Naughty and Sassy Pokemon on the same team. I train Surskit to level 8 with the trainers and wild Pokemon in route 102.

Next, in Petalburg City, I meet my father who forces me to help, and by help I mean enter an unavoidable cut scene where I watch Wally catch a Ralts. It is all smooth sailing until I reach Petalburg Woods where I have to help a Devon researcher who is being harassed by a Team magma member.

The battle was easy and from there it is smooth sailing again where I head all the way up from Rustboro City, getting all the items inside, and then to Rusturf Cave so that I could fight a Team Magma member. Or so I planned, I forgot I had to fight the gym leader first before I had that mini quest. So before I go off to the Rustboro Gym to face Roxie I catch a Nincada, naming it Flash, to be used as a Flash and Cut slave.

When I enter the Gym NetBall is level 13 and Muffin is level 14. I use NetBall to defeat all the gym trainers putting him at level 15 and almost at level 16. I save before I face the Gym Leader Roxie. I start off with NetBall and use a Bubble attack hoping it would KO Roxie's Geodude but her Pokemon lives with red health and instead KOs NetBall with a Critical Hit Rock Tomb.

...I restart the game and try again. This second time my NetBall's Bubble attack actually scores a Critical Hit and makes Geodue faint, meanwhile NetBall grows to level 16. Before I face Nosepass I switch to Flash the Nincada so I could Sand Attack spam, but I forgot Nincadas don't learn Sand Attack till level 9 and mine was only level 6. Instead I just use Leach Life until Nincada is forced to faint; I actually put Nosepass to half health before that happens since Nosepass spammed Harden. Next I decide to use Starter the Mudkip instead of Muffin to use an accuracy loss move. I was expecting Mudkip to only get to score one or two Mud Slaps but I actually get to use enough for Roxie to use 2 Potions on Nosepass. After Nosepass finally gets to faint Mudkip I use NetBall to seal the deal. It takes 3 Bubbles to KO Nosepass and I successfully get to do so by making Nosepass miss 2 Rock Tombs. I finally beat Roxie and get my Stone Badge with a TM39 as an added bonus.

In the next part my team and I will have to defeat the Team Magma Grunt who stole the Devon Goods and then face the next Gym Leader.

I begin this part by helping the Devon researcher who just never gets a break. This time the same Team Magma member we met in Petalburg Woods stole some Devon Goods and even kidnapped Mr. Briney's Peeko. Before I go to Rusturf Cave to defeat the Team Magma grunt I use Cut to battle the rest of the trainers in in Route 116. The Team Magma Grunt was just as easy as before, bested by Muffin, but this time as a result of the win Devon Corporation gives me a Pokenav and the Devon Goods to give to his son, while Mr. Briney offers us a ride to Dewford Town.

I take the offer and go to Dewford Town. I get myself an Old Rod and more importantly a Silk Scarf that'll look just great on Muffin. I travel to Granite cave battling the two fisherman on my way there. I get to Granite Cave and get the HM Flash which I can't use yet until I beat Brawly, nonetheless even without Flash it is still easy to traverse through through the dimly lit Granite Cave.

I make my way up to Steven Stone and give him the Devon Goods which he, as thanks, gives me the TM for Steel Wing. The only thing I have left to do is face all the gym trainers and then Brawly in the Dewford Gym. After defeating all the trainers in the gym NetBall ends up at level 17 while Muffin at 18.

I’m not going to speak about all the battles before I actually beat Brawly because I had to do 5 actual restarts before I could beat Brawly. I learned through my losing battles that I needed NetBall to be alive to fight Makuhita but Machop could easily defeat Muffin. So I ended up teaching Flash to NetBall, who I was surprised could learn the move. So yet another gym I need to accuracy drop spam to win.

I start the battle with Starter the Mudkip hoping to get some Mud Slaps out, but he is finished off by a single Karate Chop. I then switch to NetBall who proceeds to use 6 Flashes while Machop Bulk Ups 4 times and miss some. Machop only gets one Karate Chop off on NetBall which I heal off with a Super Potion. I use an X Special on NetBall so he could 6HKO Machop with Bubble. Machop keeps missing and I keep attacking. Brawly ends up wasting his only 2 Super Potions on Machop until it finally goes down. Brawly having no more Super Potions was very critical for beating Makuhita.

Brawly’s star pokemon comes out and I decide to keep NetBall in since he still has full health and the X Special boost. I use a Bubble and it does around the same it did to Machop and Makuhita decides to use Sand Attack. I decide to switch to Muffin as Makuhita uses a Bulk Up, if he gets enough boosts it could be dangerous. Muffin is able to get off 3 Headbutts, thanks to flinching, before perishing to Arm Thrust. I bring out Netball again who with 2 Bubbles is able to defeat the rogue Makuhita, luckily for me each Arm Thrust only did 5 damage per thrust. NetBall again scores me a victory and I get my second gym badge, the Knuckle Badge. I also get the TM for Bulk Up.

In the next part my team and I will take Mr. Briney’s boat again to Slateport City. Not only will I face the next gym leader but I’ll also get a confrontation with my rival again.

Lockeharte, this took ages to find, especially with it having to be male.


First Gym, Piece of Cake.


Second Gym, after grinding in a cave with Lockehart, it was damn hard to Bide all 3 of his pokemon, but not impossible.

darkhe4rt, take an Electrike. To evolve, it must solo Norman while being Paralyzed during the whole battle. It must also know Thunder Wave at all times and use it at least once in every battle it participates in until you have defeated all Gym Leaders. Nickname it Intostance.

darkhea4rt take a Corphish. Name it Hunter. Teach it Sludge Bomb. For it to evolve, it has to poison 3 water types in every lake in the Hoenn mainland (so it the Sootopolis City lake doesn't count). If you want to teach it Brick Beak, it has to poison a Gyarados in Sootopolis City.

Take a Torchic and name it Thermos. It can't forget Ember and cannot learn any other fire type move. It must burn all of Flannery's Pokemon if it wants to learn any other fire move, and can never learn anything stronger that Fire Punch.

Darkhe4rt, take a Bagon named Bobo.

It must be taught Fly without using the HM when it evovles, it must learn and keep Iron Defense as a Shelgon, it must learn and keep Crunch as a Bagon BEFORE it evolves, it may not participate in the Elite Four Challenge until it has learned Dragon Claw, and is at least Level 55.

In order to evovle into Shelgon, it must solo Ace Trainer Vito, Wally, and learn Crunch. (Vito and Wally are in the Victory Road)
In order to evolve into Salamence, it must solo Sidney's Absol, Phoebe's Sableye, and Drake's Salamence. It must also faint against Glacia's Walrein.


Yup, you will not have your flyer until Wallace. Also, it may not evolve into Salamence any later than Level 50.


Final restriction, this is the only Pokémon that is allowed to have Fly.

Take a Male Seedot, named Lockehart.

He must learn Flash as soon as you catch him/receive the HM. He cannot forget Flash and no other Pokemon can learn Flash.
He may not evolve to Nuzleaf until he solos Brawly, KOing each Pokemon with Bide.
He may not evolve to Shiftry until he lands the final blow on both of Liz and Tate's Solrock and Lunatone.
