It came up with these results. Despite what the pictures look like, these birds are all about the size of a sparrow:
Common Ground Dove (Columbina passerina), Western coloring
Ruddy Ground-Dove (Columbina talpacoti)
Inca Dove (Columbina inca)
Is it any of those? If it isn't, let me know if I should change some parameters in my search and I'll look again. Also, if this was a very young bird - like a juvenile - those can also be difficult to identify because different species can look similar to each other.
EDIT: I looked more into this, since none of those really look like a passenger pigeon, and if I assume that this bird was about the size of a Robin instead of a sparrow, I found this:
Red-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas flavirostris)
That looks more like what you're describing. Is that it?
