Author's Notes:
Hi everyone, here is, after a slight delay, Chapter 17, "The Mistralton City Gym Battle." This chapter covers, as the name would suggest, David, Bianca and Cheren's battles against Skyla for the Jet Badge. In addition to that however, we also see a (hopefully) humorous side-plot with Cheren and the Move Tutor, and, much like in the games themselves, N returns at the end to deliver some ominous news; stay tuned for partial excitement!
Just a few things I want to say this time around. First of all, I admit, I screwed up with Umbreon. I always intended him to be a Baton Passer because
that's what Umbreon DO, but I didn't realize that only Eevee could learn Baton Pass until after I had evolved him. However, this gave me the opportunity to work in the Move Tutor; I've just been waiting until Mistralton to address this issue because that's where the Unova Move Tutor happens to be in the games. Not sure how many of you will pick up on this, but I also allude to the fact that Cheren had actually been working on this problem on his own while he was alone with Umbreon in Mistralton Cave searching for Cobalion; this was accidental and a mistake, but it actually turned out well.
Second, I want to respond to the impending "you evolved a Pokemon during an important battle!" comments before they come. Yes, Golbat evolves during a Gym Battle; it's a Flying-type Gym and he's a shiny Flying-type.
However, unlike the other evolutions of this sort (Ralts into Kirlia at Striaton, Eevee into Umbreon at Relic Castle, Yamask into Cofagrigus at Turnback Cave and Zubat into Golbat at Nimbasa), Golbat doesn't evolve because he's losing and needs the extra strength to win, but instead evolves
because he won and gained enough strength to evolve. It's a different driving force catalyzing the evolution, which I think makes it more legitimate.
And finally, on the topic of Skyla's Gligar. Many of you, based on your past disapproval of non-Unova Pokemon being in Unova, will likely question Skyla's use of the Johto-native Gligar. I gave her a Gligar so that she wouldn't just get swept by Pachirisu and Joltik, and there are no other non-Legendary Flying/Ground types in the game that could have also fit this role. Gligar
can be caught in Eastern Unova however, and Skyla explains this and claims she was able to catch him there thanks to her extenuating circumstances of being a professional pilot. Hopefully this will be explanation enough for you all.
Here is Chapter 17 of
Chroncies of Unova, “The Mistralton City Gym Battle.” By the way, not sure if any of you will pick up on it, but N quotes Lord Hood from
“Tsavo Highway” in Halo 3 at the end of the chapter. Hopefully at least one of you will catch that. Hope you like it; thanks for reading.
