Author's Notes:
Hi everyone, here's Chapter 24. I hope you all can excuse my recent absence. Posting the updated chapters was the last thing I was able to do on my break before the semester started and it's been a kick-you-in-the-face kind of semester right from the get-go. There was also a full week in which the power was out from a freak (for my area) snowstorm, so I had no means of working on the story even if I wanted to. Apologies again.
With the last update I launched the "A Challenger Appears" contest, and I've already gotten several good entries. We've had five properly entered submissions thus far and they've all been really good. I'm excited to see what else you all come up with.
I'll be honest with you guys: I know I'm not great at this, even by amateur standards (think back to the opening of "Separation"), but I can admit when something isn't my best work (such as the original six chapters). I think this chapter represents one such example. I had a very difficult time starting this chapter, and continuing difficulty with it even after I got rolling. I think I've salvaged as much as I can and I think it's in a postable state if you will, but I know I'm showing some rust with this one. I think things are starting to stabilize now though and I'm back in practice, so hopefully this will just be a blip on the radar. To be fair, this is also a portion of the game where several critically important things all happen back-to-back, but they're all a little disjointed and "Okay, well I guess that just happened..."-ish. I did the best I could with what I've got.
The name of the chapter is of course a play on the expression "The belle of the ball," referring on the one hand to Drayden's ball and on the other to the romanization of Bianca's Japanese name,
Bel. The two short pieces of music were performed by my father; you can read and listen to more
here. And one final note, to anyone who only played White and never played Black, while this is an interpretation of the games collectively, it is really more set in Black than it is in White. Reshiram is the player's dragon, Zekrom is N's dragon, Opelucid City is the advanced version instead of the old version, Drayden is the Gym Leader instead of Iris, Black City will be there instead of White Forest when we reach that point, et cetera.
I'll leave you to it on that note. Thanks for reading guys.
