not you, some people think that they can take them on, so i'm saying leftys because some new players don't know much, at least until they know what they're doing

I'd assume you're playing a smart player, unless earlier in the battle they played terribly.

That was an actual question, I wasn't taking offense...I actually didn't know who you were talking about.

Well, I'd say that Black Sludge or Leftovers is a more optional thing.

    ^ yea, i'm just saying

also, why isn't t-bolt on the choice set, it actually works in hitting pokes like skarm, gyara. and most waters harder than shadow ball

I agree with you this time. I think it could be an option over HP ice or Trick.

    ^^^^And don't forget Sableye...

I don't think it's that big of a deal in the Lefties/Black Sludge debate. If a scarfer really wants to Trick you, they also risk getting KOed in the process. Lati@s, Gengars, Alakazams are also weak to Shadow Ball (and Rotom-W can possibly be KOed by Giga Drain/Energy Ball), so Tricking so you can pick it up isn't necessarily the best strategy on their side. Black Sludge would probably be the better choice on Random Matchups though thanks to Item Clause and a better abundance of bad players that don't know better than to not Trick a Poison type.

it was an option over trick, and you need HP Fire, otherwise scizor gives you a hard time. HP Ice only hits dragons, which you have STAB Shadow Ball for or Focus Blast in Hydregion case, why waste a slot on a move when you have such great power with his coverage moves. Again, T-Bolt can Waters and Skarm, even in Rain, for SE Damage, and i see the choice specs set exactly like Specs LAtios, 4 attacks for max coverage

Most won't even have choice items, and when they do, it's probably to trick walls.

My fav set for gengar is Sub/Shadow Ball/Focus Miss/Energy Ball with life orb. It works so well. Dominates walls and sweeps through teams.

O_o can't believe this just went up in the last few days....

I'm working on Gengar for VGC and he's very similar to a few in OP

Timid or Hasty, @ Black Sludge, 252SA/252Spe/4HP

Substitute (defensive to dodge nastiness like Weavile and Alakazam and useful to set up other moves)
Energy Ball (launch from Sub, reduces opponents SD)
Focus Blast (hits Ttar among other nasties)
Sludge Wave (get from Subway TM or DW)

Use SW in singles and Sludge Bomb in doubles as SW might hit the partner. Nice coverage on a Spooky Special Sweeper.

Yeah, you don't need the energy ball. It's not doing much for ya.

Giga Drain can be helpful though, especially for more subs. ILevitate can also offer a switch-in on Ground types if you're a good predictor. t's usefulness, however, is probably dependent on your team needs.

However, any Gengar set without Shadow Ball is a bad set.

Seems to be a common thought, but why?

Because first of all Gengar's weak to Psychic and Ghost, which Shadow Ball fixes. And it's solid STAB. Ghost also has more SE types than Poison too. Pluss there's the Ghost + Fighting combo that Gengar pulls off well.

You saw where this is for VGC, right? Excepting other Gengars how common are ghosts and Psychics?

Granted I wouldn't so this in standard everyday singles, but..VGC....

Thing is Gengar's high special attack makes Shadow Ball a viable move. Heck I took out a Mewtwo with Mismagnius' Shadow Ball just showing it capabilites.

I think what most people are saying is that Shadow Ball is better than energy ball because it is STAB, takes advantage of gengar's stats, has good neutral coverage...etc
If you must go with a grass move then I would go for Giga Drain.

PS. About Sludge Wave...just partner Gengar with a steel type or better yet Lucario that way you can also cover Dark and Normal types. Just a thought

I doubt normals will be showing up at VGC with Toxicroak and Ttar to knock them down, though darks are a very real threat.

He's toting Black Sludge to get the HP restore from it and has Sub to dodge those nasty darks. Darks which are resistant to and strong against Ghost-type as I recall. Focus Blast can take the darks down a peg or two; precede it with a sub, EB, sub combo and you protect Gengar while chipping away at the opposition. if EB's bonus kicks in FB dishes out even more hurt. Sludge Wave hits the field so you would need someone capable of surviving it or you can use Sludge Bomb, they both have a shot at poisoning the target plus STAB.

All the moves in this set take advantage of his SA and have good neutral AND SE coverage without having to worry about OMG it's a dark and I just lost a move.

I had a lot of success with Trick/Disablegar

    Gengar@Choice Scarf
    Nature:Timid
    EVs: 4 HP, 252 SpA,252 Spe
    -Trick
    -Disable
    -Shadow Ball
    -Sludge Bomb/Wave

This is the set I used

    Gengar @ LO
    Timid
    252 SPA & Speed/4 HP
    -Shadow Ball
    -energy Ball
    -focus blast
    -thunderbolt

Everyone uses the subdisable set but it can easily be shut down with the right prediction. They sub, you attack, you predict the disable and you attack with a whole different attack and ko.

If you're just randomly coming in and SubDisabling stuff, you're using it wrong. I use it to stop pokemon that carry Dark/Ghost + Fighting coverage, like Bisharp, Toxicroak, Conkeldurr, NP Lucario, etc.

Not just those, but it can also stop edgequake and pokemon with only one attacking move. I think that's the main reason it's not a gimmick.

I guess I was just playing against dumb players then, lol!

But yeah, it is great to shut down some of gengar;s counters/checks.

    tweaked it a bit to

    Timid

    -Thunderbolt
    -Focus Blast
    -Energy Ball
    -Sludge Bomb

otherwise unchanged...with sub on 2 other teammates it just not working as well here. Yes it's still lacking Ghost STAB, but thoughts otherwise? (issues with 4th gen so no GD either, though I did like that idea with Sub-lefties/BS)
