During the main story line I don't have any favorite "grinding" places; I just train in tall grass against wild Pokemon and occasionally against trainers who call me on the Pokegear, but that rarely happens. During the post-game I grind against the Gym Leaders at the Fighting Dojo or against the Elite Four. I don't even bother with wild Pokemon grinding at that point in the games.

Mount Silver where Red obviously had the same idea. They're killed quickly and the XP gained is pretty reasonable.

Before challenging the Elite Four,it is the grass on route 47,behind the waterfall. After beating the game,it is Mt.Silver.The rematches are also useful.

Mount Silver, definitely. It was the only spot which had remotely high-leveled Pokemon. Defeating the League was just as good to train.

    Dojos and Elite Four.
I guess Mt. Silver had its perks, but I like money too.
Many thanks to Astral Shadow for the (rather old) shifting userbar and Garnet who I assume created the guild userbar.

Are you interested in PASBL? I'd recommend the Getting Started thread.

Despite the limited training spots in HeartGold and SoulSilver, I have had great success training my Pokemon at Mt. Silver.
Other notable mentions: Elite Four and Fighting Dojo.

Mt. Silver, Cerulean Cave & the Gym Leader Re-matches. Gary was the most useful, by providing the largest amount of experience points.
