Default Skiyomi's Drawings

Ah well, here we go. Drawing/coloring is not something in which I'm super confident, but I've decided to give it another go. I've started a notebook that I intend on filling with sketches (the "best" of which will be colored in Photoshop. Note the scare quotes.) in the hopes that I can chart some improvement from beginning to end, however slight it may be. I've been posting my efforts (the ones I've colored at least--not the sketches) on DeviantArt, but I figured I might as well post them here too.

To make one thing clear, there are currently no few Pokemon drawings here. That doesn't mean there won't be more in the future, but that's how it is right now. At the moment.
Hmm. Anyway.

Table of Contents:
1. Slayers - Filia (4), Xellos (4) - 2/25/12
2. Slayers - Filia (1), Xellos (1) - 3/6/12
3. Pokemon - Volkner (1); Slayers - Xellos + Filia (1) - 3/18/12
4. Pokemon - Volbeat (1); Slayers - Filia (1), Xellos (1) - 4/12/12
5. Pokemon - Lorelei (1), Misty (1); Slayers - Xellos (1) - 4/27/12
6. Pokemon - Oddish (1), Blitzle (1); Naruto - Naruto (1); Slayers - Amelia (1) - 5/20/12
7. Pokemon - Lucario (1), Wally (1), Meowth + Pikachu (1); Slayers - Lina (1), Xellos (1) - 6/27/12
8. Slayers - Filia (3), Xellos (3), Xellos + Filia (1), Zelgadis (1) - 7/31/12
9. Pokemon - Cyndaquil (1), Seadra (1); Slayers - Xellos (2), Filia (4), Xellos + Filia (1) - 8/24/12
10. Pokemon - Lyra + Whitney (1), Rosa (1), Misty + Ash (1), Curtis + Rosa (1), May (1), Magneton (1), Iris (1), Cilan + Iris (1); Slayers - Xellos (1), Filia (1), Xellos + Filia (2) - 11/24/12

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 11/28/11
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in Photoshop CS2.

Comments: Hands terribly deformed. I think the coloring turned out pretty okay though.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 12/30/11
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart done in Paint Shop Pro 7. Coloring done in Photoshop CS2.
Reference: I know I used one, but I'm still trying to find it.
Comments: I'm getting worse instead of better! That's... that's the opposite of what I wanted!!

Subject: Filia Ul Copt (Slayers)
Date Finished: 12/30/11
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lines and shading done in Photoshop CS2.
Reference: Ditto from above.
Comments: I really had trouble picking what sketch to work further with on the page this was from and originally I tried using another one, but it really didn't work out, so I went for the one with big alien eyes instead. *shrug*

Subject: Filia Ul Copt (Slayers)
Date Finished: 1/16/12
Process: Originally drawn and shaded with pencil and paper. Posterized shading, removed notebook lines with clone stamp tool, and colored in Photoshop CS2.
Reference: A chapter picture from the manga The Wallflower, which I do not have scanned on my computer.
Comments: Here's me experimenting with not doing lineart on the computer. I originally wanted to leave the pencil shading relatively untouched beyond editing out the notebook lines, but the scan came out rather uneven with some blurriness in places, so I used a posterizing effect in the hopes that I could keep some of the pencil shading look while making it look overall more even. Not totally thrilled with how that came off... it works better in some places than others.

I was really happy with this when I first drew it, but I've gotten less and less happy with it every time I look at it XD

Subject: Filia Ul Copt (Slayers)
Date Finished: 1/20/12
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in Photoshop CS2.
Reference: link
Comments: This picture is waaay uneven. I know it. You know it. But there's still something I like about it. *shrug*

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 1/23/12
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Edited and colored in Photoshop CS2.
Reference: I know I used one, but I still have to find it. Did I get lazy in keeping track of my references? Yes. Yes I did.
Comments: Here's another attempt at using the original lines in the drawing instead of tracing over them on the computer. I think I learned a lot from coloring this one.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 2/24/12
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in Photoshop CS2.
Reference: link
Comments: I actually did a colored version of the sketch for this awhile ago, but I really didn't like how it turned out. So I gave it another go. Not saying this is great shakes or anything because it's obviously not, but it came out better than version one.

That's it for now. More... sometime!

I've got two more new pictures--once again of Filia and Xellos because that's just how it goes. These are the first pictures where the lion's share of the digital work was done in GIMP which I only recently got and am still trying to get used to. I like the lineart options much more in GIMP already though, so I'm happy about that.

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 3/1/12
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP (with a little extra work done in Photoshop).
Reference: link
Comments: I think this is the shakier of the two because I was still really finding my way around GIMP. I also wasn't aware of some of the level of detail I could get so the lines are still a little blocky. Now that I'm looking at it... Filia's hair looks off color-wise. Whoops.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 3/6/12
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP.
Reference: link
Comments: The original sketch I did for this wasn't very good in the first place, so there's that, but nevertheless I'm pretty happy with the coloring and I feel like I learned a lot with the lineart part. Again, there's a lot of inconsistency with it because I was figuring things out as I went along.

Well, I'm not a fan of Slayers, actually, I really don't know what it is but these are really nice! They look official and the coloring is also pretty good. Hopefully, we see Pokemon or other anime-related drawings soon. ^_^

Thank you to both of you I've actually got one Pokemon-based piece in this update.

Comments: I wanted to draw Xellos and Filia together finally and I also decided to try a different shading style. Neither is an unqualified success. And... those arms! So unarmlike!

Ah you draw real pretty! I like how you drew Volkner! But, all are very good! I still need to learn how to even draw the basics! >.>

I don't know what Slayers is, but the drawings are really good! I like the Volkner drawing especially! You're a good artist!

I got into Slayers..Ski's fault But its a Xellosome Anime!

I love how ye colour them and also the outlines. When I do mine, the lines are straight.. yours have different sizes of stroke..how do you do that? O.o

Ya think ye can do Amelia next in her star outfit? :3 nya~

Thank you very much to all of you

I turn my paths into shape selections and then fill them. Strokes are probably easier, but I didn't really like using them (probably because I'm such an amateur at GIMP) and plus I like the varied thickness in the lines, so I prefer to do it this way.

Ya think ye can do Amelia next in her star outfit? :3 nya~
XD I haven't got any sketches like that on the docket right now to color... but maybe in the future :P

Nothing to update right now... well, I've done a not-so-good drawing of Volbeat, but I want to get more done before I post more here.

Okey-dokey. I've got a few new finished drawings.

Subject: Volbeat
Date Finished: 3/31/12
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP and Photoshop CS2.
Reference: link
Other Credits: Textures from Aethereality and Brusheezy.
Comments: The sketch for this one started out pretty decent, but I think I ended up wrecking it in the lineart phase. So I decided to just mess around with weird textures instead of coloring it as usual.

Subject: Filia Ul Copt (Slayers)
Date Finished: 4/8/12
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP and Photoshop CS2.
Credits: Cloud brushes from Brusheezy.
Comments: Oh my GOD, is that a background?! It is! It's a lazily applied gradient + cloud brushes background... but at least it's a background!

Shading on this one was a pain. I did it twice and it still looks wrong in so many places. Overall, I'm fairly happy with the finished product though... at least the bangs... a little bit... kind of...

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 4/11/11
Process: Originally drawn with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP.
Comments: I suck at drawing characters in profile. Believe it or not, this is actually probably one of my best in-profile results. The mouth-area is jacked up though. *siiiigh*

Yo, I'll leave a critique.

Okay, I really like the use of different thickness in the outlines. They seem more interesting than a thin or thick outline alone. I have to say, I think the positioning of the eyes are weird. One looks like it was drawn higher than the other. The face is turned, but I don't think it changes how eye the eye looks. The eye on the right should be lowered down, imho. I also think the nose should move to the left more. I think the shading is pretty good - you can see where your light source is. Although, the colors you used to shade are kind of boring. You don't get a sense of what temperature the color is and it could change the mood of the drawing. But other than that, it's pretty neat!

Also, can I just say, the textures on Volbeat look great? =]

Thanks! Yeah, I definitely agree that the face is off looking for the reasons that you've mentioned. I also agree that I've been playing it safe with colors... I might try to mess around with them more in the future as I get more comfortable with choosing them.

I'm glad you like the textures! Honestly, I wasn't that happy with the result X_x

Comments: Probably the most messed up of the bunch, but also probably the most ambitious. It's kinda... smushed in the middle and I screwed up many times in the process. Still, I'm actually surprised at how undeformed the hand looks. I mean, I'm not saying it's a good hand, but it's "good" for me at least. Also, the reference is my mousepad

Ah, lovely Misty picture!

I like how you made the dress a lot more red than in the screenshot thing. The hair and dress were almost the same hue. =x I'd say, the body is a little off-centered, but not by much. The eyes are a little smaller.

I think it's a pretty drawing, and I like it out of your recent update. =] Maybe it's because it's a. Misty or b. there's a nice red color. Either way, really nice job. ^..^

I'm glad you liked the Misty drawing. That seemed to be a popular one on dA (though probably more than it deserved, I'd say).

Got a bit for a new update... haven't been doing a lot of serious drawing lately though...

^ Thanks both of you.

Sorry I forgot to update for awhile. Here's some new stuff.

Click thumbnail for full-view:

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/3/12
Process: Sketching done with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP.
Comments: Awful hands again. But I am purposefully trying to draw things with hands fully visible instead of using long sleeves or hiding them behind backs in the hope that practice will make less-awful. Or at least to shame me into working harder.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/4/12
Process: Sketching done with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP. Text and cropping done in Photoshop CS2.
Comments: C'mon, Xellos! We all know you're better at scaring people than this. You're not even trying, are you?

Subjects: Xellos, Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/4/12
Process: Sketching done with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP. Text and cropping done in Photoshop CS2.
Comments: So, I struggle with drawing people in profile... and with drawing two people interacting. LET'S COMBINE THE TWO!

I actually don't think Xellos turned out bad. Filia, on the other hand... I messed up on face shape and totally wrecked her hair.

Trying to do some airbrush shading here instead of the usual.

Subject: Zelgadis (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/6/12
Process: Sketching done with pencil and paper. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP.
Comments: I was trying to do something with this that had more of a scratchy, natural look to it, which I haven't really been able to achieve in GIMP. It's certainly not there, but I'm still kinda experimenting.

Fact of the matter is that I'm just not very good at drawing lines without using the pen tool (I'm not that good at the pen tool either, but that's a different story). I wish I had steadier hands, but the lines just aren't what I want them to be. Still, not as bad as I thought it would turn out.

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/28/12
Process: 1. Sketched in pencil, inked with a ballpoint pen, and colored with colored pencils. Notebook line removal and touch-ups done in Photoshop. 2. Sketched in pencil, inked with a ballpoint pen, and colored in Photoshop (soft shading). 3. Sketched in pencil, lineart and coloring done in GIMP.
Comments: A comparison piece with various ways I could deal with the same drawing.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/25/12
Process: Pencil sketch, inked with a ballpoint pen, colored with crayons, and some adjustments done in Photoshop.
Comments: loose crayons in my closet, so I gave those a whack. Now, I honestly didn't have the right colors for skin, but there *was* more coloring on the skin then what's showing up here. My scanner ate most of it. Next time I'll try to mess around with the scanning options a bit more and see if anything works. Also, still trying to get a handle around mixing colors.

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/25/12
Process: Pencil sketch, final lines and coloring with colored pencil, and some adjustments done in Photoshop.
Comments: Went out and bought a set of 24 colored pencils after the whole Xellos-crayon drawing. Still kinda figuring stuff out here. Also, I wish I'd gone over the lines in ink instead of black colored pencil. I feel like that would've turned out better.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 7/31/12
Process: Pencil sketch, lineart done with gel ink rolling ball pen, coloring done with colored pencils, and notebook line removal + some contrast effects done in Photoshop CS2.
Comments: More of me trying to work with colored pencils. This time with Xellos!

...Wow. All that and not a single Pokemon picture. Sorry guys!

Comments: Haaaaate this. I think it's just plain to see that I'm not very good at drawing these little critters. Not surprising since I can barely draw humans.

You might be asking yourself: why, Skiyomi, would you not only bother to draw and color this, but actually add a background (which you don't usually do) if you never liked this drawing?

Well, to be perfectly honest, I DON'T KNOW.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 8/7/12
Process: Sketched with pencil. Lineart and coloring done in GIMP.
Comments: ...I'm really not pleased with this picture. To be honest, I wasn't from the beginning, but everything else on the page I sketched was worse and I wanted to at least have something to practice coloring with.

It's just... I wanted to draw Xellos surprised--not something that happens to him often, but not impossible. It just didn't work out. Between my bungling of the expression and mistakes with his face shape and whatnot he just ends up looking... surprised, yes. But not like *Xellos* being surprised. He almost looks like a kid or something. It just doesn't work as a picture of Xellos, because he's not acting like Xellos.

*sigh*

I tried a different coloring technique using smudges, which is perhaps why his hair has that radioactive rainbow in an oilslick look about it. Thinner lines than usual too.

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 8/16/12
Process: Sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: ...I actually kinda like this one. I mean, sure it just sort of... stops, and the hair doesn't always flow as well as I'd like it to, and I'm not entirely sure what that expression is saying to me... but it still seems better to me than a lot of the other stuff I've drawn lately.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 8/17/12
Process: Sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: It didn't originally have that blurred look to it. But it ended up looking better this way.

...Xellos's eyebrow are more fun to draw than Filia's.

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 8/18/12
Process: Sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: I messed up the angle on this. Also, it's in black and white for no real reason.

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 8/18/12
Process: Originally a pencil sketch, resketched in GIMP.
Comments: Trying for a different look here. I was going to color it, but it just wasn't working out, so I left it as is.

Subject: Seadra
Date Finished: 8/20/12
Process: Pencil sketch, lineart and coloring done in GIMP.
Comments: What?! A drawing of a Pokemon that I'm actually somewhat happy with? That's... a nice surprise!

Only thing I really dislike is the scales.

Subject: Filia, Xellos(Slayers)
Date Finished: 8/21/12
Process: Original Sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP. Background -> Photoshop (Actually, maybe even Paint Shop Pro 7. It's an old background of mine.)
Comments: Coloring Xellos's hair was the most fun part of this. ...Unfortunately I colored that first, so it kinda went downhill from there.

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: I'm useless without a computer to remember things for me.
Process: Original Sketch, Lines & Coloring -> Traditional (Pen + Colored Pencils.) Adjustments -> Photoshop CS2
Comments: I'm kinda "meh" on the whole finished product. It just didn't turn out as well as I hoped--I didn't do very well with the strands of hair blown across the face thing, among other problems.

It's been too long since my last update. Blame laziness. Anyway here's what I've been doing since the last one. Comments are shamefully copied from my original dA uploads.

Subject: Xellos (Slayers)
Date Finished: 8/27/12
Process: Original Sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: I'd been mostly drawing just... faces lately, so I tried to do the whole thing here.

Oh little design on the edge of Xellos's cloak, you don't look that difficult. But yet I never manage to make you look good. Why is that, little design on the edge of Xellos's cloak? Why is that?

Subject: Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 9/1/12
Process: Original Sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: Sorry for the fanservice, Filly-cakes. I'm just trying to get better at drawing female figures.

...Clearly that's where all my attention went since we have blob hands and bad hair. *slump*

Subject: Lyra, Whitney
Date Finished: 9/10/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: A KansasShipping drawing done on a dare for a shipping truth or dare game. It actually turned out a lot better than I expected.

No shading though! Because I'm lazy!

Subject: Rosa
Date Finished: 9/14/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP

Subject: Xellos, Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 9/19/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: In which Xellos offers Filia a poisoned apple in order to kill her and in doing so become the fairest one of all.

...Wait. No. This is actually meant to be a scene from my oneshot Unoriginal Sin and...

Oh dear.

See, I'm trying to actually draw scenes now... with like... poses, and interaction, and backgrounds and stuff! And... let's just say there are teething problems here.

Good grief. I'm not sure what's worse, the lazy, concrete-rectangle bench, the fact that they don't even look like they're making physical contact with it, the craptastic hands... the ARMS! LIKE! NOODLES!!!

Umm. Let's just say this has a lot of problems with it and I don't like it. But, bright side: I haven't failed. I've just learned a way not to succeed.

...Wait... >.>

(I swear the oneshot is better than this picture. You gotta believe me!)

Subject: Misty, Ash
Date Finished: 10/2/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: My entry for PokeShippingHaven's PokeShipping Crossover contest. The chance to mix Pokemon with Slayers was just too good to pass up.

I was originally going to draw Misty and Ash as Filia and Xellos since they're my Slayers OTP but... but... no. Just no. I could see drawing Misty as Filia, but Ash as Xellos? Tooooooo wrong a match. Lina and Gourry work much better for the two of them (though Ash should probably bulk up a lot more if he wants to play Gourry).

It was a challenge for me though, since I really don't draw Lina and Gourry on a regular basis, so getting their outfits down was hard. I feel the need to shout "Curse you, shoulder guards!" to the mountaintops.

The texture I used is from stock.xchng.

(Contest update. I won third place.)

Subject: Curtis, Rosa

Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: Some Livecastershipping done for a shipping doodle dare.

Subject: May
Date Finished: 11/10/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: I was nearly done with this when I went through a computer transfer, so there was a long break before I actually finished it.

Also, more of her arms and her hands were visible in the original picture, but they were awful so I cropped them out in order to hopefully spare myself some SHAME.

Subject: Magneton
Date Finished: 11/12/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP
Comments: I love Magneton, but even I'm not entirely sure why. Magneton-love needs no reason.

Jus' a cruddy li'l drawing.

Subject: Iris
Date Finished: 11/14/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP. Texture -> Aethereality.
Comments: This isn't my first time trying to draw Iris, but I think it's my first Iris picture that's gone to full color. I really appreciate the quirkiness of her design, but it's taking me a bit to get used to drawing it. For example, this picture had to be cropped because I messed up on some of her outfit (and not just to hide my inability to draw hands right this time). And of course there's that hair. But you should be seeing another picture of her very soon unless I completely mess up. The next picture I'll be working on will be a WishfulShipping one (hurray for even-numbered Poke-girls paired up with green-haired boys!)

Subject: Cilan, Iris
Date Finished: 11/15/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Lineart + Coloring -> GIMP.
Comments: I was dared to draw a WishfulShipping image using this as a guide and... I fell flat... literally. I mean, I really need to fix this inability to draw clothing and the folds in it because this looks sooooo flat.

Nevertheless... I did work hard on this X_x

Subject: Xellos, Filia (Slayers)
Date Finished: 11/23/12
Process: Original sketch -> Traditional. Coloring -> Photoshop CS2. Texture -> DeviantArt
Comments: I have a notebook that's filled with my for-serious attempts at drawing. Oftentimes, they're downright awful, but I draw in that notebook when it's my intent to gather material to try to turn into a full piece. This isn't from that notebook... this is just me messing around with a ballpoint pen while I was watching TV. And yes, it came out super-messy, but... I don't know. I guess there was something about it that I liked, because I decided I wanted to color it anyway.

I wanted to keep the sketchiness, so I didn't do lineart and instead clone-brushed out the notebook lines and some of the really messy sketchy bits.

Xellos's face looks weird. I tried to, as they say, fix it in post, but it just looked weirder, so I left it.
