Tangrowth @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP/4 Atk/252 Def
Relaxed (+Def, -Spd)/Impish (+Def, -SAtk)
- Power Whip
- Earthquake/Rock Slide/Brick Break
- Sleep Powder
- Leech Seed
Tangrowth is a good physically bulky Grass-type. Power Whip is STAB while Earthquake or Rock Slide are for coverage (they take care of Tangrowth’s weaknesses) or Brick Break is for Steel-types. Sleep Powder is for causing Sleep, and Leech Seed, combined with Leftovers, Tangrowth’s decent HP and defense, and later Regenerator, ensures that it will take a long time for Tangrowth to die. Physically. Pretty much any strong Special Attack will kill it, especially Fire-type.

White 2
Continuing my trend of posting Counters for Pokemon I dislike...
Countering Tangrowth
Any decent Special Attacker toting super effective attacks should be able to kill Tangrowth or at least force it out. Even with reinforcement, it's really hard to wall with 50 Special Defense, especially if Tangrowth can't do anything back to you. If Tangrowth Subseeds, Cloyster absolutely slays it (As it does regardless). I've had a lot of success with screwing with Tangrowth using Froslass, since it can stop set ups with Taunt, or just knock it out with Ice Beam. Abomasnow wards off Leech Seed and hammers it with Ice Shard or Blizzard. Just, fast and strong Ice Beam users in general: Starmie, Jynx, a good number of Water types to be frank if Substitute isn't up. Common Air Slash carriers like Rotom-S, Emolga, Offensive Sigilyph, Togekiss, Yanmega, all make great choices. Poison is a great way to chip away at Tangrowth, though it will try to flee with Regenerator to heal. Trapping can work, but Dugtrio really isn't a good choice. Gothitelle and Chandelure both make great counters when the Dream World variants are out. Chandelure works fine now as it is though.
This is a signature that doesn't eat up an absurd amount of space.
As soon as I saw Tangrowth I thought of Antar1011's Kudzulu from Youtube. You should seriously check him out. Anyways, this vine-covered friend of ours has an excellent Defense stat, good HP, and high Attack and Sp. Attack stats. It's Sp. Defense and Speed are low, but it got a great new ability in 5th gen that really helps its survivability. Of course, Tangrowth suffers the mixed blessing of being a pure Grass type: resistances to several common types of attacks like Water, Ground, and Electric are great, but a whopping five weaknesses, including Fire, Ice, Bug, Poison, and Flying really hurt its survivability. Still, Tangrowth has good enough stats and ability to perform admirably in the RU and UU environments.
Recommended tiers: RU-UU
Chlorophyll doubles Tangrowth's Speed in Sun. This solves the issue of Tangrowth's low Speed, and makes it into a sweeping threat. At its absolute maximum, (Timid/Jolly with 252 EVs) Tangrowth reaches a whopping 436 Speed with this ability. Without a +Speed nature and max Speed EVs, it still reaches an excellent 398 Speed (which is faster than Timid Mewtwo, by the way). Of course, Scarfs can make this ability less valuable, but Tangrowth has the advantage of being able to switch its moves.
Leaf Guard is a rather weak choice compared the other two. When its Sunny, Tangrowth isn't affected by status problems. Although the big advantage of this ability is that you can use Rest without having to Sleep, giving Tangrowth an easy Full Heal.
Regenerator is a SWEET ability. Every time Tangrowth switches out (and it switches out a lot) it regains one-third of its maximum HP. This gives it some reliable recovery.
Tangrowth has a pretty standard Grass movepool with some twists. Its strongest attack is Leaf Storm, and it can deal a lot of hurting with STAB and a base 110 Sp. Attack. Grass Knot, Giga Drain and Energy Ball are much weaker, but are more reliable. Giga Drain also has the bonus of restoring Tangrowth's HP. Focus Blast is powerful and helpful against Steels, but its inaccurate. Sludge Bomb is filler, but its coverage is horrible, relegating it to the sidelines. Hidden Power Ice or Hidden Power Fire is a must on special attacking Tangrowth, though its impossible to get complete coverage with either. Without HP Ice, Dragons will laugh at you, and without HP Fire, Steels will do the same. Tangrowth struggles with Fire types in both cases, but you generally don't want to leave Tangrowth in on a Fire-type Pokemon anyway. Oddly enough, Tangrowth can learn Shock Wave, which, while a weak option, still forms the Ice-Electric combo with HP Ice. Remember though, this move can't be combined with Regenerator.
Physically, Tangrowth has a fair few options. The most powerful of these is Power Whip, and that move is actually fairly reliable with 85% accuracy. Tangrowth is blessed with Earthquake, which REALLY helps its coverage problems. Brick Break can bust screens, and Payback combines well with Tangrowth's low speed. Rock Slide combos well with Earthquake. Aerial Ace and Poison Jab could be used, but their power and coverage makes them unfavorable.
Tangrowth can use the classic Double Power strategy, putting one Pokemon to sleep with Sleep Powder and paralyzing another with Stun Spore. Tickle is an interesting move that can force switches if you use it enough. Swords Dance can be used to raise Tangrowth's Attack to great heights. Growth raises both Attack and Sp. Attack, and its usable on a mixed Tangrowth. The Sub-Seed strategy, another Grass classic, is also usable. Knock Off swats away a target's item, which is always useful.
Double and Triple Options: Watch Antar1011's channel. Haha, back on topic, Tangrowth can learn Rage Powder, which does the same thing as Follow Me. Resistances to Earthquake, Surf, and Discharge are all pluses, but beware Lava Plume , Searing Shot, and Heat Wave. Tangrowth can also use Earthquake and Rock Slide to hit multiple Pokemon.
Countering Tangrowth: Special Fire Attacks are a great choice, especially if its sunny. With only base 50 Sp. Defense, Tangrowth can be OHKO'd by a supereffective special attack quite easily. Also, even with Regenerator, repeated beatings really take a toll on Tangrowth. Note that many counters can be shut down by Sleep Powder, so you may have to sacrifice a Pokemon in order to activate the Sleep Clause. You can also use Taunt to stop a non-offensive Tangrowth cold.
Pre-Evolution corner: I've used Eviolte Tangela before, and he is BOSS. Even his rather low Sp. Defense becomes hard to breech with the help of Eviolite. He can't do much offensively, but Sleep Powder, Leech Seed, and Knock Off are all he really needs. But remember that he has to have Regenerator! In Little Cup, Tangela can operate in the same way as Tangrowth.

Tangrowth is a great Pokemon. I will let the sets do the talking.
Virus Chamber made of Vines
Nature: The one that raises special defense and lowers attack.
EVs: 252 special defense, 100 defense, 152 HP, 4 Special attack
Ability: Regenerator
@: Leftovers/Big Root
Giga Drain/Leaf Storm
Leech Seed
Block
Sleep Powder/Toxic
This is not very standard, but any non Liquid Ooze/grass type will not like dealing with this set. Block is the crux of the set. Sleep Powder is Sleep Powder. Leech Seed is the other major factor of the set. Giga Drain can add to Tangrowth's recovery, but Leaf Storm will pack power if you feel it is necessary. Toxic can replace Sleep Powder to cripple your targets quicker. The downside is that the opponent can actually fight back.
Sun-enhanced Sweeper: Physical
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 252 attack and HP, 4 speed OR 252 attack and speed, 4 HP
Ability: Chlorophyll or Regenerator
@: Life Orb (best with Regenerator)/Leftovers
Power Whip
Swords Dance
Earthquake
Rock Slide/Sleep Powder
Sun Sweeper it is, but where is Growth? Growth's double attack boost only happens under the sun. Swords Dance gives the needed boost with consistency. Power Whip is awesome and makes Tangrowth a possibly better option than Venasaur. Earthquake hits Steel types and Rock Slide gives great coverage with Earthquake. Sleep Powder is an option if you run Chlorophyll.
Sun Sweeper: Special
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 special attack and HP, 4 speed OR 252 special attack and speed, 4 HP
Ability: Chlorophyll or Regenerator
@: Life Orb (best with Regenerator)/Leftovers
Giga Drain/Solarbeam
Growth
Focus Blast
Hidden Power Fire/Sleep Powder
Growth is obvious. Giga Drain is much more reliable, but Solarbeam packs a nasty punch. Focus Blast hits Steel types. HP Fire is sun boosted and also hits bugs, but Sleep Powder is just as awesome for what it does.
Sun Sweeper: Mixed
Nature: Rash/the one that raises attack and lowers special defense
EVs: 252 attack and special attack, 4 HP
Ability: Chlorophyll/Regenerator
@: Life Orb/Leftovers
Giga Drain/Solarbeam/Power Whip
Growth
Earthquake/Sleep Powder
Focus Blast/Hidden Power Fire/Sleep Powder
If you got Chlorophyll, one of this set's advantages over mixed Venasaur is Power Whip. Venasaur is forced to use Seed Bomb, but not Tangrowth. Another plus is Giga Drain where Venasaur is forced to use Energy Ball. The third advantage is that Tangrowth has Focus Blast, and is not forced to use Sludge Bomb. The final plus is that Tangrowth has more raw power than Venasaur.
If you run Regenerator, the speed loss will be really tough. It's do-able, but not recommended because of Tangrowth's small special defense.
Other options:
Leaf Storm can be used on a possible Choice Specs set, but that makes Tangrowth compared to Roserade, who is faster and has a higher special attack.
Other STAB options include Energy Ball, Seed Bomb, Bullet Seed, and Grass Knot. Energy Ball is not much stronger than Giga Drain, Power Whip is the key component that separates Tangrowth from Venasaur, making Seed Bomb stupid. Bullet Seed can break substitutes and can end up with a little more power than Power Whip. That won't happen much though, making Bullet Seed a poor choice. Grass Knot is actually pretty interesting.
Grass Knot hits rock and ground types for big damage, and those guys tend to be heavy. Considering Focus Blast's accuracy, Grass Knot is the best option for hitting any Tyranitar that switches in hoping to shrug off (kind of) Giga Drain or laugh while Tangrowth charges Solarbeam. Grass Knot is worth considering. Just remember that consistency is usually the better option.
Tangrowth can run other Hidden Power types, but Ice is the best choice to hit dragons, which Tangrowth otherwise has issues handling.
A Double Powder set can be great with Regenerator, and Tangrowth has the physical bulk to pull off Sleep Powder and Stun Spore.
Synthesis can be an option, but Regenerator does the job better as it does not consume a move slot.
Reflect can send Tangrowth's physical bulk through the roof, which has great synergy with Regenerator, but it needs Light Screen to really do the job.
Amnesia can act as a permanent Light Screen, but that only works if Tangrowth stays in, making Regenerator look bad.
Brick Break is just another option. It does break screens.
Aerial Ace is just funny to picture, so I mentioned it.
Given Tangrowth's lacking speed, Payback is actually a pretty cool option. The problem is, Tangrowth has four-move-slot syndrome, so Payback has no room.
Knock Off has some nice tech options, but has no space for it.
Multi-Pokemon battles:
Tangrowth has access to Rage Powder, which combos well with Regenerator and its physical bulk. It also has Earthquake and Rock Slide.
Counters:
Special attacks and Toxic. In other words, Charizard and Moltres. Yanmega and Venomoth are also possible. The sun can help it, but Tangrowth is not dependent on the sun to do its job, so changing the weather won't slow Tangrowth down much. It's better to use the sun against Tangrowth. Charizard gets said again as it is Solar Powered and packs one of the nastiest Flamethrowers around with that Solar Power boost. Bottom line is, Countering Tangrowth can be a really easy, or really difficult. It depends on how you can handle a defensive set or a sun-based attack set.
I claim Buizel.
BOOM! My homeboy Tangrowth :3 Anyways, on to the set(s)
The Plant That Never Dies
Tangrowth@Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
252 HP/ 4 Atk/ 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
Moves
Leech Seed
Giga Drain
Knock Off
Toxic/Sleep Powder/Hidden Power [Fire]
Thanks to Regenerator, Tangrowth get HP bacK when its switched out. You can use this ability along with Leftovers, Leech Seed and Giga Drain to make Tangrowth and unbeatable wall. Anyways, Leech Seed both damage the opponent and recover HP which makes Tangrowth that much more annoying. Knock Off is a great supportive move that can get rid of the opponent's Leftovers, to make sure they are worn down faster without the extra HP recovery. And the in the last slot, Toxic can wear down offensive threats and walls down even quicker if you have Leech Seed set up. Sleep Powder cripple any Pokemon for, essentially, for the whole match, which always good. And Hidden Power [Fire] is solely so you are not walled by Whimsicott, while Whimsicott can't do too much to you in return.
Sun Sweeping Tangrowth
Tangrowth@Life Orb
Trait: Chlorophyll
252 Atk/ 4 Sp.Atk/ 252 Spd
Naive Nature
Moves
Growth
Power Whip
Earthquake
Hidden Power [Fire]
Not only does Tangrowth have great physical Bulk, but he also has amazing mixed offensive stats. With Growth getting a HUGE boost this gen in the Sun, it is the ideal set-up move in Tangrowth's arsenal. Power Whip is the STAB of choice. 120 BP with no real drawbacks, except for imperfect accuracy. Earthquake destroys any Fire types foolish enough to switch in without an Air Balloon. And finally, Hidden Power [Fire] destroys levitating Steels and completely roasts Ferrothorn, who otherwise has no problems taking your hits.
PhysiGrowth
Tangrowth@Leftovers
Jolly nature
Chlorophyll
252 Atk/252 Spd/4 HP
~Swords Dance/Growth
~Power Whip
~Rock Slide
~Earthquake
Tangrowth is one of the better Grass-types out there, with excellent stats in all areas other than Speed and Special Defense. And even then, the Speed issue is fixable. This set takes advantage of Tangrowth's decent physical movepool and nice Attack stat. Swords Dance ups Attack (so does Growth, and by the same amount in bright sunlight, which is really the only situation in which you should be using Tangrowth), Power Whip is for STAB, Rock Slide and EQ are for coverage.
Item allows recovery from damage taken on the setup turn. Ability fixes the Speed problem.
SpecialGrowth
Tangrowth@Leftovers
Timid nature
Chlorophyll
252 Sp. Atk/252 Spd/4 HP
~Growth
~SolarBeam
~Hidden Power (Fire)
~Focus Blast/Synthesis/Morning Sun
Tangrowth can also go for a special sweep with its higher Special Attack. Growth provides a sharp increase to Special Attack in sun (only situation where Tangrowth should be used), SolarBeam is the STAB move, HP Fire takes advantage of the sun, last slot is filler. Focus Blast gives extra coverage, but Synthesis and Morning Sun are both viable options.
Item and ability were previously explained.
GrowthGrowth
Tangrowth@Leftovers
Naive nature
Chlorophyll
252 Spd/126 Atk/126 Sp. Atk
~Growth
~SolarBeam
~Hidden Power (Ghost)
~Brick Break
Mixed Tangrowth. Growth sharply increases both attacking stats, provided Tangrowth is operating under intense sunlight (the only way to use Tangrowth), SolarBeam is for STAB, HP Ghost and Brick Break are for coverage.
Item and ability should both be obvious at this point.
Other options:
*Tangrowth learns AncientPower (in fact, it must know that in order to become a Tangrowth in the first place), but it's rather weak.
*Giga Drain and Energy Ball are both viable options, but under the sun, SolarBeam's just better.
*For a nice gimmick, Tangrowth can learn Power Swap and Leaf Storm. Power Swap allows you to shift the Special Attack decrease from Leaf Storm to the opponent.
*Tangrowth can in theory make a decent physical wall, but is outclassed in that respect by Tangela.
Abilities:
*Chlorophyll: Doubles Tangrowth's Speed in the sun. Very necessary for its sweeping efforts.
*Leaf Guard: Protects Tangrowth from status in the sun. Situational. Better suited for a more defensively oriented Pokémon, and even then, not the best option.
*Regenerator: Tangrowth's Hidden Ability. Wouldn't be too bad, but it requires switching to work, which in turn takes away Tangrowth's stat boosts, which would be counterproductive. Legally has access to it.
Partners:
Ninetales. Just... Ninetales.
Counters:
Special attacks in general. Chansey and Blissey wall special attacking Tangrowth to hell and back, and Blissey can KO with Flamethrower or Ice Beam. Anything with Haze or Clear Smog is also a safe bet.
Opinion:
Cool concept, though IMO Tangela didn't need an evolution. Still, can't complain- turned out to be one of the best things that happened to Tangela.
Prediction for next week:

Wallgela
Tangela@Eviolite
Bold nature
Leaf Guard
252 HP/252 Sp.Def/4 Def
~Giga Drain
~Leech Seed
~Synthesis
~Sleep Powder
Tangela has lower overall stats than Tangrowth (except, oddly enough, Speed), and yet it makes a better wall than its evolution ever could. Why? The answer is simple; Eviolite. Tangrowth really was the best thing that happened to Tangela, because it gave the little guy Eviolite compatibility. This set takes advantage of that improved defensive prowess. Giga Drain is for STAB and HP recovery. Leech Seed is for further damage and healing. Synthesis is for even more healing. Sleep Powder is to incapacitate an opponent.
Item is obvious. Ability works like Safeguard in the sun.
Tangled Sweep
Tangela@Eviolite
Modest nature
Chlorophyll
252 Sp. Atk/252 Spd/4 HP
~SolarBeam
~Hidden Power (Fire)
~Growth/AncientPower
~Synthesis/Morning Sun
Tangela can also go for a special sweep with its high Special Attack. Growth provides a sharp increase to Special Attack in sun (only situation where this sort of Tangela should be used), SolarBeam is the STAB move, HP Fire takes advantage of the sun, Growth increases Special Attack, and Synthesis restores HP. Growth can be replaced with AncientPower for the hell of it, and Morning Sun is also a viable option. Provided, of course, you were lucky enough that your Tangela from XD came with a Modest nature AND HP Fire, like mine did.
Item is obvious. Ability boosts Tangela's Speed to sweeper levels in the sun.
Other options:
*Energy Ball is a viable option on the sweeper set, but under the sun, SolarBeam's just better.
*For a nice gimmick, Tangela can learn Power Swap and Leaf Storm. Power Swap allows you to shift the Special Attack decrease from Leaf Storm to the opponent.
Abilities:
*Chlorophyll: Doubles Tangela's Speed in the sun. Very necessary for its sweeping efforts.
*Leaf Guard: Protects Tangela from status in the sun. Best ability for the wall set.
*Regenerator: Tangela's Hidden Ability. Wouldn't be too bad, but it's illegal with Giga Drain and Synthesis. Legally has access to it.
Partners:
Ninetales. Just... Ninetales.
Counters:
Special attacks in general. Chansey and Blissey wall special attacking Tangela to hell and back, and Blissey can KO with Flamethrower.
Opinion:
One of the more overlooked of the Generation I Pokémon, but is actually very viable in the right scenario.
Prediction for next week:

Fizzy Bubbles info
Visually, I despise Tangrowth. Stat wise, it’s rather decent. Base 100 Attack and 110 Special Attack and access to Growth allows Tangrowth to turn into a great Physical, Special, or mixed sweeper. It’s bulky in the way of Defense with base 125, backed up by a good 100 HP. It has a slow base 50 Speed, but with access to Chlorophyll it can fix that problem easily. Tangrowth’s biggest letdown is its sad base 50 Special Defense, making it easy to pluck off by Special attackers.
Abilities:
Chlorophyll – Doubles Tangrowth’s Speed in sunny weather. Very nice for an all-offensive variation.
Leaf Guard – Cures all status problems on Tangrowth when it’s sunny. It’s okay I guess if you’re running a more defensive Tangrowth, but Regenerator has a lot more appeal in comparison.
Regenerator – Heals about 33% of Tangrowth’s max health when switched out. This is such a helpful ability for defensive-minded Pokémon. If you’re wanting a bulky Tangrowth, go with Regenerator.
The Blue Meanies’ Hairball – Physical Growth
Item: Life Orb / Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 Spd –OR—252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -Sp. Atk)
- Growth
- Power Whip
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
When placed in the sun, Tangrowth will have doubled Speed, and Growth will double its Attack. Power Whip gets Grass STAB and is a very strong choice. Earthquake and Rock Slide is Tangrowth’s available “Edgequake” combo for great coverage.
Life Orb gives more power to Tangrowth’s attacks at the cost of HP, while Leftovers regains health.
Make your hair – er, vines – curl – Special Growth
Item: Life Orb / Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Sp. Atk / 252 HP / 4 Spd –OR—252 Sp. Atk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Nature: Modest (+Sp. Atk,-Atk)
- Growth
- Solarbeam
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Fire] / Hidden Power [Ice]
Growth also doubles Special Attack in strong sunlight. Solarbeam is powerful and fires immediately in the sun. Focus Blast rids Tangrowth of Ice-types and Steel-types that would wall Solarbeam. Hidden Power Fire receives a boost in the sun, but Hidden Power Ice can let Tangrowth deal with Flying-types.
I Whip my Vines Back and Forth – Mixed Growth
Item: Life Orb / Leftovers
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Sp. Atk / 4 HP
Nature: Naďve (+Spd, - Sp.Def)
- Growth
- Power Whip / Solarbeam
- Focus Blast / Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Fire] or [Ice]
A mish-mash of the previous two sets with attacks that have been explained before. Growth doubles Attack and Special Attack in the sun. For Physical options: Power Whip, Earthquake, and Rock Slide. For Special options: Solarbeam, Focus Blast, and Hidden Power Fire or Ice.
Wall of Vines – Bulky set
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Sp. Def
Nature: Calm (+Sp. Def, -Atk) / Careful (+Sp. Def, -Sp. Atk)
- Amnesia
- Leech Seed / Synthesis*
- Giga Drain / Power Whip / Solarbeam
- Sleep Powder / Earthquake
Hey, Tangrowth can do something about its pitiful Special Defense – it can double it with Amnesia! This allows Tangrowth more walling potential. Leech Seed can be used as an extra recovery option, while Synthesis gives a lot of instant recovery in the sun. For an offensive option, Giga Drain gets STAB as well as even more recovery for Tangrowth. Power Whip is a strong Physical option, while Solarbeam for Special. Sleep Powder can allow Tangrowth to further stall the opponent for recovery from Leech Seed and Giga Drain, while Earthquake can be another offensive option.
Regenerator can give even more health back to Tangrowth, although it will take away its Amnesia boosts.
* Note that Synthesis is taught through PtHGSS tutors, so it is not possible to have with Regenerator. You’ll have to go with another ability if you really want Synthesis in your roster – it’s up to you which one.
Power Swap Assistant – Gimmicky Set
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator / Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 126 Atk / 126 Sp. Atk
Nature: Naďve (+Spd, - Sp. Def)
- Growth
- Power Swap
- Power Whip / Solarbeam
- Earthquake / Hidden Power [Fire] or [Ice]
Here’s a gimmicky set I came up with. Growth will double Tangrowth’s Attack and Special Attack in the sun. It can then pass these boosts to a nearby ally with Power Swap. Outside of that, Tangrowth should be able to fight, so the last two slots contain attacks previously mentioned in other sets.
Is this a good set? Probably not, but it’s an idea that popped into my head.
I'm thinking about creating a printer-friendly Pokédex guidebook for Black and White versions. Let me know what you think about it here.
If you're not using Tangrowth as a Sun sweeper, this is the set to use.
Tangrowth@Leftovers
Bold
Regenerator
252 HP, 252 Def, 4 SpD
-Sleep Powder
-Giga Drain
-HP Ice/HP Fire
-Leech Seed
Tangrowth is insanely bulky on the physical side. Very few Pokemon can match that kind of physical bulk, and between Leftovers, Giga Drain, Regenerator, and Leech Seed, Tangrowth just doesn't want to die. It's so bulky, in fact, that CB Terrakion doesn't have a shot at 2HKOing it with anything, even a super-effective X-Scissor. Its special bulk leaves a bit to be desired, and it does have quite a few common weaknesses, but you pair it with something like Specially Defensive Heatran and you're all set. Sleep Powder is really useful for...well, putting things to sleep. I've used both Giga Drain and Power Whip, and I have to say that the healing from Giga Drain has been incredibly useful. HP Ice gives you coverage against Dragons and opposing Grass types, but leaves you walled by Steels. With HP Fire, you lose against Dragons, but you still hit Grass types and can now nail Steels. In fact, with its resistances to Water and Electric attacks and incredible physical bulk, it can take on VoltTurn fairly well by switching in as Rotom-W uses Volt Switch and nailing Scizor with HP Fire. Let's also not forget that Tangrowth has a great base 110 SpA stat, which is pretty strong even when uninvested. Leech Seed just adds to the recovery fun, and can be really useful for wearing down offensive threats more easily.

I like to wish that one could use tangrowth/tangela kinda like you'd use a hippowdon...just plop that wall down in somebodies face and watch them squirm...unfortunately dw versions don't get synthesis and have to breed for giga drain, while those who use synthesis have to miss out on regenerator....in the sun, tangrowth is both at its strongest and yet its most vulnerable...
Sad day mr. tangles...sad day indeed
This is my first post ever.
Tangrowth is decent for a defensive Pokemon. It's defense stat and chlorophyll makes up for it's low speed. However, that low special defense stat is rather disappointing. It's special attack stat is higher than it's attack stat, but lacks the special movepool to use it. Nevertheless, Tangrowth has it niches.
Physical Attacker

- Earthquake
- Swords Dance/Hidden Power [fire]
Item: Life Orb/Choice Scarf

With Chlorophyll, a non speed-boosting natured Tangrowth outspeeds many of its counters, such as Moltres, Heracross, and the occasional Drapion. Drought Ninetales support is a must when in OU. Tangrowth's Power Whip is one of the strongest ones you'll see, only second to Victreebel, which is now is NU. Rock Slide hits fire and ice types like Abomasnow, Moltres, and Charizard, though the last of which outspeeds Tangrowth and is oftentimes a special attacker, so Tangrowth probably won't get a chance to use it. Earthquake gets good coverage with Rock Slide, most notably severely hurting Heatran. In the last slot, swords dance should be used with Life Orb and Chlorophyll, effectively making Tangrowth fast and a strong attacker. Hidden Power fire can replace it on this set. It can also be used on the choice set with regenerator and adamant nature.
Actually ive run a tangela with leaf guard with synthesis a banded cc from terra only does about 40%

With this move set, you can utterly sweep all of it's weaknesses. Using Sunny Day and Growth, plus Chlorophyll helps a lot. Brave and Quiet nature boosts SpA and Att. but lowers speed. That's where Chlorophyll comes into play. Ancientpower kills 4 out of 5 of grasses weaknesses plus it's special. The hidden power kills annoying poison types like Muk and Golbat, Earthquake is not as good because of the ever so common Zubat family, but Ancientpower covers for that. Then, there's the quick claw. The quick claw plus ancient power can destroy those speedy bug and flying types like Scyther, Ninjask, Staravia, and Ledian. Over all, this group of stats and moves can utterly destroy all of Tangrowth weaknesses without STAB.

Tangrowth is amazing during Sun and Outstide of sun ... He can have so many roles (Sweeper Physical, Sweeper Special, Utility, Tank, Sub Seed, Defensive)
Overview
Tangrowth is one of the better grass types out there. With it's flexible stats, it can be offensive or a defensive pokemon on your team. After it came out of the dream world with it's ne ability, regenerator, it can now be used even better as a wall. It can learn a variety of moves via TM and tutors, but by leveling up it doesn't get the best moves in my opinion.
Abilities
Chlorophyll: Better used on some pokemon than others. This ability doubles the pokemon in sunlight. this ability can be used effectively on walls on a sunny-day team, but other than that it isn't that good.
Leaf Guard: Pretty much just a preemptive safeguard. It disables the pokemon form getting any stats problems in sunny weather. As good as it might sound, if you have rest then you might want to ditch it.
Regenorator: This ability is a dreamworld ability for Tangrowth. When the pokemon switches out it regains up to 1/3 of it's base HP. This can be useful against spikes and stealth rocks.
Daylight Savings:
-Ingrain
-Giga drain/Leech seed
-Sleep powder/Poison powder/Leech seed/baton pass
-Hidden Power (rock/water)
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Regenorator/chlorophyll
EV's and Nature:
252 HP, 140 def, 118 Spdef
bold (+def, -atk)
If you are running leaf guard or chlorophyll in any set MAKE SURE YOU CAN SET UP SUN! Running with chlorophyll is a smart idea, but regenerator can help you if you intend on switching. With chlorophyll you can hopefully make a fast move and take an ingrain to the ground. Then you should set up a leech seed, that is if they haven't already murdered your tangrowth. next, try to set up a leech seed. Now you are recovering 3/16 from the leftovers, leech seed and ingrain. Now you should start taking the physical. Hippenpower water/rock to kill those fire typed trying to kill you. Fire types are very common so it is an obvious way to counter one. Giga drain to get back even more hp each turn. 75 base power+STAB will get it up to 100 base power. It is a special attack so it wont be affected by the nature. If you get down into red HP and recovering isn't gonna take the next hit you can always just baton pass out. with regenerator this gets you 1/3 more HP.

Regenerator
252 HP, 252 defense, 4 special attack.
Bold (+ defense - attack)
-Giga Drain
-Sleep Powder/HP fire
-Subtitute
-Leech Seed
Like every Grass type in the pokemon world Also tsangrowth can pull a subseed set with this set up almost any physical attacker can't touch him while he set up his nasty strategy.
alternatively you can run 252 special attack and modest to hit harder you are not that fast but your defense is HUGE.

Chlorophyll
EV: 252 sp.attack, 252 speed, 4 sp.attack
-Growth
-Earthquake
-Giga Drain
-Rock Slide
Made it up just now it have chlorophyll and growth (like venusaur) and really good offenses but bad speed... why don't abuse it?
semi quakedge + STAB mixed to beat blissey and chansey.
Tangrowth. I love and hate this thing at the same time. Awesome offensive stats, Defense, and HP, but Base 50 Sp.Def and Speed kinda make me leery of using it. Its huge HP stat gets you a 101 HP Substitute, but it won't last long with your pitiful Sp.Def and Grass mono-Type. Ice Beam, Flamethrower, Sludge Bomb, Bug Buzz, Air Slash, and more will make your life miserable.
However, you are a friggin' BEAST on Defense. Not much can beat your Base 125 there.
Speed is where I'm most leery. Low enough for Trick Room, but not so much with a Grass Type, nor for one with Chlorophyll potential.
