To be fair to Iris, her three dragons all serve different roles (special attacker, physical attacker and defensive/mixed) and the rest of her team covers their two shared weaknesses pretty well. Compare that to Lance and Wallace who fulfill the same mold as a mono-type champion but could easily be swept with the right type coverage since they don't cover their weaknesses as effectively. Lance in particular also gets another detriment since he only has one dragon used, and it's used three times serving the same role with the only difference being the elemental attacks they used.
As for the new character being the champion over Iris, I think I would prefer to see someone ascend to the position over just some random new guy. After the 2 year period, I wanted to see how some of the characters grew and changed over that time, whether they got a new position, retired or left to pursue their own goals. In contrast, I think that a new character would just seem like they came out of nowhere and took the position over someone who we've already come to know. So while I was surprised Iris took the position, I'm glad with the route they took since she did have good reason to go for the position and it shows her growth as a trainer.
