Wobbuffet & Ditto
The pink and purple blob?
Yes, the pink and purple blob. They DO need quite some support to maximize their potential, but there is where teammates are for right? So, why do they have such good ‘synenergy’? Well I can literally explain it in 5 words: Shadow Tag, Encore and Imposter. I hope some of you get where I’m heading at, and well I also hope that some of you don’t since I’d like to explain myself. The purpose of this dynamic duo is to lure out a set up attacker, switch in Wobbuffet, encore your opponent his/her set up move and switch to Ditto. Cheap tactics don’t you agree? Well yes, but Jirachi also has cheap tactics and well, anything goes in pokemon battles.
The reason why I chose Wobbufet is because it has Shadow Tag over all other encore users. You don’t want to encore with your Whimsicott since your opponent can switch out… And Ditto is in this duo since it can be anything else but itself in a battle, and that’s a good thing. There is almost no need for me to explain the sets to you since there isn’t much going for them but I’ll do my best nonetheless.
Wobbuffet (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Shadow Tag
EV’s: 28 HP / 228 Def / 252 Sp. Def
Calm Nature (+ Def, - Att)
One of the most important things check is that you make sure that Wobbuffet is a MALE. This duo is already a gimmick so let’s not embarrass yourself more by making it a female one. Leftovers is the only item you should give him because of that monster HP stat, combine this with 28 HP EV’s gives you an HP number that is dividable by 16, in other words: maximum leftovers recovery. You can either invest in its physical or special defense, it comes up to preference/teammates but this metagame has more special attackers than physical, and you can’t try to literally or figuratively counter Terrakion with Wobbuffet. Safeguard is chosen since Tickle is counterproductive when you are also using Ditto on your team. Then there is one more thing left and that are his IV’s. You should give it 0 Att. IV instead of the most common 31 IV. This way you’ll minimize confusion damage and that’s always a plus. PRO TIP: any pokemon that doesn’t use its Attack stat or an Hidden Power should have an Att. IV of zero, just in case... And that’s all there is to say about Wobbuffet, so one down, one to go!
Ditto @ Leftovers/Focus Sash
EV’s: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Sp. Def
Sassy Nature (+ Sp. Def, - Speed)
Before you shout “hey kft u nub, always give Ditto Choice Scarf!1!” I’ll explain why you should not use a Scarfed Ditto together with WobbuWobbu on the same team: you are most probably coming in on a pokemon who is just encored to use one move and only that one move for the next couple of turns. So you will always know in what situation you are going to switch into (and hopefully it will be a stat boosting move so you don’t need a Scarf to hit first). Needless to say that people are still assuming that you are Scarfed so you should take advantage of that. The choice of either Leftovers or Focus Sash depends on your teammates/the presence of a rapid spin user on your team. Its Sp. Def. EV’s come directly from that-site-which-must-not-be-named here on Serebii… It’s Smogon. Anyways they did have a nice theory: Sp. Def investment and nature since Ditto does not transform when it’s send out on Zoroark. Speaking about Zoroark, that’s the best counter there is for this duo so watch out for it. Wobbuffet can’t mirror coat its attacks because of Zoroark’s immunity and Ditto doesn’t copy Zoroark. So don’t tell me that you weren’t warned! So let’s move on, the speed reduction is for those rare occasions where the outcome of the battle is determined by a Ditto vs Ditto smackdown (thank God that gen 1 mechanics were changed!). With this nature you will have the best odds in a Struggle war. You should also consider a Hidden Power type for Ditto since you could copy one, and Ditto’s IV’s are still used to determine the Hidden Power so give it one that actually can do some damage like fire or ice.
But wait, there is more to say about this duo namely team mates/support. Don’t use this duo in a hyper offensive team since that will not work. You want your opponent to use a set up move for Ditto and you want pokemon in your own team that can take advantage of the fact that your opponent doesn’t want to set up (wait what?). Stall teams or bulky team mates are the way to go. But since I’m a former stall user I can tell you that stall is officially screwed over and it isn’t viable ‘yet’ in BW2. ‘Yet’ you may ask? Well stall isn’t viable until the likes of Terrakion, Volcarona, Torn-T and Genesect are banned. Yeah I can’t help myself, I always want to bring that up since those pokemon HAVE TO GO. They just have to. Uhm where was I? Oh yes, team mates. These two pokemon love/need Wish support and an Heal Bell user. Since people tend to poison Wobbuffet and paralyze Ditto. Rapid Spin is useful for any team and duo, so yeah I recommend a Rapid Spinner. Another cheap tactic named Volt-Turn also works wonders with the trapping ability of Wobbuffet and the copying ability of Ditto.
So there it is, nice wall of text but I’m not only posting it for the lulz. I’m also posting this so that everyone can see the thought process that goes behind even this rather shallow duo. And nobody should slap just a few pokemon together only because they have good stats or movepool. There is more about synergy other than typing and coverage, keep that in mind ; )
