Everyone has a different opinion of this, when have you beaten the game? When do you put the game down and say "I have finished"?

When I was about 4 I beat Red for the first time by defeating my rival as the champion. In my excitement, I just shut the game off. I then realized I still had to catch Mewtwo. I don't think I ever went back for it, though.

Back then, "beating the game" to me what defeating the Elite 4 and the Champion and then catching Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres (if not done already) as well as Mewtwo.

Beating Mewtwo. There's nothing else to do then.

Beating all the Gym Leaders and E4 as well as catching all Pokemon and getting a complete Pokedex. That is a complete 1st gen game for me.

When I complete a Pokedex, that's when I'm really complete with it.

I'm gonna have to agree with Razor Leaf. After you beat/catch Mewtwo is when the 1st gen games are over. You've beaten the ultimate Pokemon, there's nothing left.
    No sig. Deal with it.

I never got to complete the PokéDex as a kid, so it's when Mewtwo is defeated or captured that it's the end. I don't think credits played like they do when you enter the Hall of Fame, but there really is nothing much left to do afterward. You just got bragging rights that you beat the game.

In my opinion, it's only over when you've captured all 151 Pokemon. It took me several years to accomplish that task, but when I did, I set my Blue version down and called it a day.

It's over when you beat the Elite Four 4. RBY didn't really have anything you could do after beating the league

When I was young it meant beating the E4 and making sure I had all three birds.

Years later it meant having Mewtwo.

Soon after that it meant catching them all.

Don't recall if I ever had them all on one game back then, but I know I 'had' them all through my various Red versions (cousins had Blue versions).

    I was such a nonchalant player back then. If I had a working copy of Red now I couldn't put it down until I had 150 on one copy. Then I would hack in a mew or just stare at my Black/White to remind myself that I have mew, just not on R/B/Y ;3;

Catching/defeating Mewtwo is enough for me to say that I've "beat" the game.

When I was little, beating the game meant defeating the Elite Four.

Then, as I got older, I realized that the tagline "Gotta Catch 'em All!" was there for a reason. But if you didn't have all the games, or a friend with a different game and a link cable, you were kind of out of luck.

Well, I think that when you defeat the elite four and the champion, then you can say that you beat the game. However I don't think you're done with the game until you have had all of the Pokemon and they are all at level 100. For me, though, I have no one to trade with so I will be missing quite a few.
I wish I could have a cool profile like everyone else ( ._.)

I guess by GenI standards, it would be when you beat the E4, and then caught ALL the Pokemon... today, I guess "Catch All The Pokemon" would be "Catch as many Pokemon as available on your version"

When the fat lady sings! Hur-de-hur-hur.

I say when you beat the Elite 4. Nowadays, it's when you've finished the post game I think (like beating Red in GSC+HGSS). I never thought catching them all was that important. Mainly 'cause none of my friends played when I was very little so I had no-one to trade with. Then I never really cared. It's about quality, not quantity, people!

I guess catching Mewtwo. I had no friends that also played pokemon so it wouldn't have worked out if I wanted the whole pokedex. No one to trade with then.

The credits roll after you beat the Elite 4; it says "The End" after the credits roll, so I voted for option two. Everything else is extra.
