Like anime subbed or dubbed? ~ Where the concept of Uncut DVDs still hasn't sank in.

I'll generally go for subbed. I'd like to stress that this isn't down to me thinking that all dubs are terrible (although many are). It's just a personal preference, based on almost nothing except my instinct. Even when a dub is really good, better maybe, I'll still probably pick subbed. That's just how I roll.

Big exception time: Porco Rosso! The dub of that film is glorious. Even if Fio is suspiciously American.

But I like the original voices of the Japanese version of Bleach so much better than the English version that I get distracted by the weird-ness in the English voices. Same goes for FMA Brotherhood - I love the original voices but for rewatchability - I would prefer dubbed.

A lot of the stuff VIZ Media added recently are subtitled. Also, I think some shows have the option for dubbed and subbed. Although, I think they'll stream dubbed by default.

I do not understand how someone would panic, obviously an exaggeration but still, about hearing a dub. I wish to hear why they make you panic though.

To those who prefer subs over dubs, how would you react to hearing actual English on the Japanese track of an anime? To give an example, the first episode of Eden of the East is set in Washington, and features Americans voicing over American roles in fluent English. Or Blood: The Last Vampire, where half the script is in English and stars either native speakers or Japanese actors who are proficient in it. What would your reaction be? Confusion? Worry? Excitement?

And how about some shows that feature English songs in their soundtracks? Cowboy Bebop, Gankutsuou, and even old examples like Gundam X qualify. This is more of a curiosity if anything, since from my experience, an anime being entirely in English apparently offends people, but random strings/songs in it are just fine.

The sub/dub question really boils down to the quality of the sub/dub concerned, to be honest. For example, the aforementioned CCS exemplifies the case when subs are preferable to dubs, because the original text is too altered and the VAs lack any talent. It's worth noting that the CCS dubbed movie (Sealed Card, I think) was infinitely better than the Nelvana dub, because it stuck to the original script: Syaoran and Sakura like each other, Rika isn't "scared" of Terada, and Tomoyo is more... Tomoyo.

Personally, I usually prefer subs, because the Japanese VAs tend to be more emotive, but there have been cases where the dubbers pull off the roles much more convincingly, and where the Jap. VAs seem to inject too much... ham.

Code Geass, for example. I liked the English Lelouch more than the Japanese one, no offense. Kate Higgins' C.C. was also surprisingly good.

I've also heard good things about GLagann's dub, but I won't comment, since I haven't watched the series. (didn't have the time)

Only if there's a TV broadcast, and even then they don't "cut everything." Not to mention, that's what DVD/Blu-ray releases are for. Plus, you do realize a lot of Japanese broadcasts tend to be censored as well, right? Usually people in Japan have to wait for the DVDs/Blu-rays in order to get the unaltered experience.

I prefer dubs because I feel more comfortable with them, considering that I grew up with anime on Cartoon Network, I definetly prefer dubs.

I, personally, enjoy the subbed anime for the simple reasons that I pick up the language by hearing it and I'm just way too impatient for the English version to come out. I like knowing what happens. :]

It also depends on the voice directors, as they're the ones who decide how they want the voice actors to do their jobs.

Blu-Rays/DVDs are fine. I don't know much about American dubs, because i have only watched few of thoses. But the dubs here... i mean it, they cut lot of things, and also edit scenes. Just like a 4Kids in a different ways. I have never knew that Japan censor animes. o__O
