Bar the first reply, nobody else mentioned ponies yet? Heck, I just watched every episode (yes, I was walked in on) and typed up my opinion on it.

I really haven't watched any of the newer popular shows on Nick, CN, or Disney, but I have to say any cartoon where the main characters are much much dumber than a box of rocks. It's not funny, (at least not much to me) and what the heck does that teach kids? Give us one stupid character, not the whole cast.

Little kids, they love dumb humour, they'll eat it up, I can understand while they're still on television. At least Friendship is Magic does some good by having mostly dumb humour but the odd slice of some pretty good humour that can be seen in Faust's other works giving the kids better tastes at a younger age. That said, I don't get the majority of My Little Pony fan-base as there's not enough delicious humour in the show.

Speaking of which, I've been looking at all of this from an adult/teenager perspective and not a kids' perspective. Which perspective should we use to view these shows?

I would say look at it depends on the show and the kind of fanbase they have. For example, if it's a show that is obviously meant for kids and only kids, then look at it from a kids' perspective and see whether or not it's a good show for kids to be watching or a show you think you would like as a kid. However if it is a show meant for kids and adults or only adults, then I would say look at it from an adult perspective and judge whether or not the show is doing a good job of appealing to adults or both adults and children.

It's an anime, but one that comes to mind for me is Axis Powers Hetalia. My friend is absolutely obsessed with that show, and she eventually convinced me to watch it. I've seen every episode of it, and I don't see what's so great about it. Granted, it's not horrible, but it's very overrated.

Watch out, you're going to have a bunch of rabid fans after you for saying that.

Even though I agree, it gives off a really skewed interpretation of the world wars. I mean, sure it's for comedy but I think some people are actually stupid enough to believe that it's an accurate representation of those nations.

oh it's a love/hate romance. 'cause i could watch her dance, if i've got my boots.

I have another thought that I think most people will disagree with, but I don't care.

A lot of people seem to put the 90's cartoons on a pedestal, but I don't think they're that great. Sure, there was good stuff back then, but the way people talk about them, you'd think they were masterpieces on the same level of greatness as the classic Disney and Looney Tunes cartoons and, of course, vastly superior to all modern cartoons in every way possible. So, yeah. In a way, I do think 90's cartoons are kind of overrated.

I won't lie, I love Hetalia and it's one of my favourite Japanese cartoons. The humour is clever and unique with odd unfitting sexual jokes here and there. Still, I have to agree with you, I don't see how the fan-base is so obsessive with it coming off with gay romance fan fictions (I originally avoided the series like the plague because I used to think it was animated man on man porn).

Another overrated Japanese installment would be the Dragon Ball series. Nostalgic? Yes, it's one of the many thing that dragged me into Japanese media. Good? No, the plot's awful and repetitive while the characters and humor are bland. Then the fans come at you or it might have just been that one guy in that chatroom I used to go to (got tired of that one guy typing that he was shoving his erection into various openings of my body). That guy aside, they're still milking it, even after it originally ended. The remastered HD retelling dubbed "Kai" on its anniversary was fine but the many spin-off movies and games that are still being produced…

    Two words: Regular. Show.
Oh, and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. How that ever got so popular, I don't know. Most little kids, kids, and toddlers hate it here.

Argh, can't you just let me sleep...

I never understood how CN's recent shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show got so popular.

A lot of older shows have adult humor, too. It's not a phenomenon unique to modern cartoons.

Go watch some of the older episodes of Spongebob, for example. And IIRC, Animaniacs had some adult humor in it, too.

Eh, guess I can agree. I've gotten into DragonBall fine, though I don't watch it a lot.

For anime, I can't get into Lucky Star at all. My friend loves the show, and we've watched it a couple of times at her place, but I was really bored throughout it all. I don't know why. I don't think it has anything to do with it being a Slice of Life. It probably has to do with the life of an otaku, and I don't consider myself an otaku. Though the theme song and dance is just sooooo catchy...

I know of the adult humor in the older shows, but they were more clever about it. That's what I really like about cartoons at times. Though it's for kids, the writing is for the adults watching with the children. Lot of these shows aren't subtle about it anymore, and that's what I don't like about a lot of them.

Someone mentioned Johnny Test. Yeah, I don't know why the show's still on. I liked its first season when it was on Kids WB, I thought it was great. Then it just got bland over time (though it's Pokémon parody was funny the first time).

I'll be the party pooper and say all cartoons. The only two I like, The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, I can understand. But all others? It'll forever be a mystery to me as to why they're so popular.
