Yup, that's why they introduced Tracy. However, it didn't make a big deal of it at all unlike Jynx so they ended up bringing him back.

That'd be weird. I can't imagine having Pokemon Pink back in 1st gen, and Ash hanging out with a Clefairy all the time.

Actually, from what I remember was that poliwag was the first pokémon, thought up by Satoshi Tajiri when he saw tadpoles with spiralling innards seen through their semi-transparent skin.

Though he could have thought of it earlier, then created it after creating rhydon.

More like... Clefairy would have been too girly when the anime and games was focused on appealing both genders. <.> So I think Pikachu was decided because its cute, but looks.. powerful for the little guys XP ^_^

Here's another fact about the Poliwag family: Those swirly bellies of theirs aren't just for show, they're really supposed to be their intestines; able to be seen through their semitransparent skin. Based off actual tadpoles : )
