That flaming corpse in midair is Maylene's Lucario before crashing to the floor, defeated.

Looks like this episode could be Ash's last battle in the Unova League with the title concerns. Hopefully that Ash will reach the place better than he did in the Sinnoh League. Kotetsu would be a great trainer. But having him to lose to Kotetsu is like an outrage. The writers must made a mistake.

Either Ash loses or his lost to Virgil get's rushed in the form of 1-2 shots...

Or the Lucario and Pikachu confrontation takes place ion the first five minutes, followed by Virgil for the next fifteen. I mean, we know next episode Ash and gang are still seemingly at the stadium, and I don't recall anytime they stuck around a tournament/league for long after it's conclusion.

Oh goodness, you're right. That could still leave some enough time to allow Ash to move on a bit before his eventual defeat.

Also, Pikachu doesn't necessarily NEED to be defeated by an Eevee. Let him be defeated by Flareon!

Well it looks like they are still in the stadium in the next episode going on a boat to the White Ruins. So maybe the final Ash vs Kotetsu match-ups takes place in the first half and then Kotetsu vs Virgil in the Top 4 and then Virgil wins the league. The league ends but not everyone has left the stadium when the episode finishes.

The irony is, if Ash hadn't helped Kotetsu to sign up to the league, he'd probably be 100% facing virgil.

At the moment, I think the chances are 50/50.

You could say, Ash signed up his defeat
